Vipers Cut Down To 26

Vipers cut down to 26

Kevin Mitchell

Tue Sep 5th, 2017

The Vernon Vipers were down to two goalies, seven defencemen and 17 forwards as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Head coach/director of player personnel Mark Ferner was manning the phones trying desparately to move a couple of forwards before the 56th B.C. Hockey League season opens Friday night.

“We’ve got some tough decisions to make,” said Ferner. “We have 26 players and we have to be down to 23 by Friday so it won’t be easy.”

the full article says a handful of players were released, but it only mentioned Webb and Cherkowski by name. Why is it so darn hard to get any info out of the Vipers?
Season ticket holders like myself want to know whats going on!

Vipers roster listed on the BCHL website has 20 players. NO Evans,Prokop, Marritt, Ong, or Panacci listed. Yet they still show Sagissor, who did absolutely NOTHING after we picked him up at the trade deadline. Cherkowski already released. Hopefully we move some vets to make room for these young guys, every preseason game they played in they put up points and were lauded on this very blog for having good games. This is the best group of recruits we've had in a long while, find a way to keep them!

Any word on who is staying & who has departed? The Viper Management need to throw the loyal fans a bone and let us know who is still here.

I hope the cutting of Cherkowski doesn't come back to haunt Ferner. That kid was better than anyone else that was recruited this yr in my opinion

I also wonder why the Vipers-Vernon media only gives little tid bits of info regarding players cut-released etc during training camp/exhibition games. Why cant the Vipers-Vernon media mention all the players that were cut-released instead of just listing a name here or a name there. I also think the Vipers should put their entire roster on the lineup sheets during exhibition games, then announce the scratches before the game, so fans know whos still listed on the roster-with the team. The Morning Star newspaper should get the full list of players who have been cut-released and give that list in the paper, rather then just naming one or two names every week. Its very frustrating trying to follow the team, with no proper info given out to the fans.

I wouldn't put any money down on the current Vipers roster posted on the league website. The league and website is always late, never updated on time and wrong from time to time. I have seen this many times in previous years. The league has posted the Vipers roster after the pre-season ends, and then the day before or the day of the start of the regular season, it changes. Why isn't Finn Evans and Josh Prokop listed on the Vipers roster? Were they cut-traded? I cant see that. Evans was recently acquired in a trade about three weeks ago and Prokop was one of the teams top recruits-committed players for the upcoming season. Again, I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes to the Vipers roster before the start of the regular season.

I also liked Nicholas Cherkowski and thought he had a very good chance of making the team. I also liked the looks of Quinton Ong, Kyler Shmigelsky & Adam Panacci
