Regular Season Opener - Salmon Arm 3 Vernon 0

I was born and raised in Vernon, BC and been watching/following Junior hockey in Vernon my entire life. My family watched Senior men's hockey in Vernon in the 1950's and has been watching Junior hockey in Vernon since it started in 1961. I have two family members that played Junior hockey in Vernon. I have had season tickets since 1990 and missed 5 home games since 2004 and 46 home games since 1990. I started and created this blog in November 2008 and have over 2.2 million viewers. For anyone who couldn't watch or attend today's Vipers game, here are my thoughts and views from tonight's game. You may agree or disagree, but we all have our own opinion on the hockey game. I try to be professional and give a fare game recap from both sides. Thank you for visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks regular season opener as Salmon Arm defeated Vernon 3-0 in front of 1,361 fans at the Shaw Centre.

Vipers Alumni Taylor Is One Of Clarkson's Eight-Man Recruiting Class:

Clarkson University is reloading with an incoming class of eight players,

one of those eight players is former Vernon Vipers defenceman Trey Taylor.

Taylor played last season with the United States Hockey League Youngstown Phantoms. In 53 games, Taylor collected (10-goals-33-assists-43-points).

The Phantoms selected Taylor 31st overall May 28th 2021 in Round 3 in Phase 2 of the Unites States Hockey League Draft.

Taylor played three seasons in Vernon with the Vipers from 2018-2021. In 125 games with the Vipers, Taylor collected (8-goals-32-assists-40-points).

Calvin is in his second season as an Assistant Coach with the Trail Smoke Eaters. The Smoke Eaters named Calvin Assistant Coach September 16th 2021.

Calvin played three seasons at Selkirk College from 2015-2018 before playing his final season of College hockey at Vancouver Island University in 2018-19.

Calvin was an affiliated player with the 2012-13 Vernon Vipers, committed to the Vipers for the 2013-14 season. Calvin played in 11 games with the Vipers during the 2013-14 season before leaving the team for personal reasons. Calvin joined the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Beaver Valley Nitehawks later that season. Calvin re-joined the Vipers after Christmas in 2013 and played with the Vipers as an affiliated player for the remainder of the 2013-14 season. Calvin committed to the Trail Smoke Eaters for the 2014-15 season. In 12 games with the Vipers, Calvin collected (3-goals-6-assists-9-points).

Former Vernon Lakers defenceman/Assistant Coach Keith Chase will have to wait to see if he will go to jail for a sexual assault that occurred almost 20 years ago.

Chase currently owns Chasers Bottle depot in Vernon.


Chase played parts of four seasons in Vernon from 1982-1985 before being traded to the Merritt Centennials during the 1984-85 season. Chase would return to Vernon after being traded back to the Lakers and played his final two seasons in Vernon from 1986-1988. After his junior hockey career ended, Chase joined the Vernon Lakers as an assistant coach from 1988-1991. In 94 games with the Lakers, Chase collected (3-goals-11-assists-12-points).

The Vernon Lakers were around from 1980-1983 & 1984-1995 before changing their name to the Vernon Vipers in 1995.

Growlers Give Former Viper Foward Skirving Qualifying Offer:

The ECHL released the list of players who received a valid qualifying offer

from ECHL teams by the June 30 deadline. The ECHL Newfoundland Growlers have 4 players listed on qualifying offers. One of those four players is former Vernon Vipers forward Todd Skirving.

Skirving has played the past three seasons with the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers. In 60 games last season, Skirving collected (21-goals-20-assists-41-points).


Skirving didn't play professional hockey during the 2020-21 season as the Growlers decided to opt out of the 2020-21 season under the ECHL's COVID-19 Voluntary Suspension Policy. Skirving spent the 2020-21 season as an Assistant Coach with the BCHL expansion Cranbrook Bucks. Skirving and the Bucks went 3-16-0-1 during the 2020-21 pod season.

Skirving played four years at Rochester Institute of Technology from 2013-2017 before signing his first professional contract with the ECHL Orlando Solar Bears August 3rd 2017. Skirving spent the 2017-18 season playing with Orlando, Utah and Atlanta before signing a professional contract with the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers October 16th 2018.

Skirving committed to the Vernon Vipers for the 2010-11 season. Skirving played half a season in Vernon with the 2010-11 Vernon Vipers. The Vipers traded Skirving and future considerations to the Prince George Spruce Kings January 10th 2011 for Ryan Renz. In 34 games with the Vipers, Skirving collected (4-goals-5-assists-9-points).

Hammond finished the 2021-22 season with the New Jersey Devils. Hammond spent the 2021-22 season with the American Hockey League Iowa Wild, Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils. 


Hammond started the 2021-22 season with the Minnesota Wild but was playing with the American Hockey League Iowa Wild, before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens February 12th 2022. The Canadiens traded Hammond to New Jersey March 21st 2022. 

Hammond spent the 2020-21 season on the Minnesota Wild's taxi squad. The Panthers are Hammond's tenth team since 2017. Hammond has also played for Ottawa, Colorado, Montreal, Minnesota, Buffalo & New Jersey. Prior to joining the Montreal Canadiens, Hammond hadn't played in the NHL since the 2017-18 season where he split the season between the Colorado Avalanche and American Hockey League Bellville Senators and San Antonio Rampage.

Hammond played four years at Bowling Green University from 2009-2013 before signing his first professional contract with the Ottawa Senators March 20th 2013.

Hammond made his NHL/Senators debut February 27th 2014 vs the Detroit Red Wings. Hammond recorded his first NHL victory February 18th 2015 making 42 saves in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Hammond is the only goaltender in NHL history to record 21 wins in his first 27 career NHL games.

Hammond played parts of two seasons in Vernon from 2007-2009. The Surrey Eagles traded Hammond to Vernon during the 2007-08 season. In 52 games with the Vipers, Hammond went 33-15-1 with 6 shutouts.

Exhibition - Penticton 5 Vernon 3

I was born and raised in Vernon, BC and been watching/following Junior hockey in Vernon my whole life. Worcester Railers Give Former Vernon Viper Jandric Qualifying Offer:

The ECHL released the list of players who received a valid qualifying

offer from ECHL teams by the June 30 deadline. The ECHL Worcester Railers have 7 players listed on qualifying offers. One of those seven players is former Vernon Vipers forward Steven Jandric.

Jandric started the 2021-22 season at Merrimack College before signing his first professional contract with the ECHL Worcester Railers March 20th 2022. Jandric was released March 27th 2022 after playing in only 5 games. The Railers re-signed Jandric March 31st 2022. In 20 games with the Railers last season, Jandric collected (6-goals-7-assists-13-points). The American Hockey League Providence Bruins signed Jandric to a professional tryout contract April 29th 2022.


Jandric spent the past five seasons playing with three Universities from 2017-2022. Jandric committed to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for the 2017-18 season. Jandric played three seasons in Alaska before transferring to Denver University for the 2020-21 season. After one season at Denver University, Jandric transfferred to Merrimack College for the 2021-22 season. 

Jandric played two seasons in Vernon from 2015-2017. In 115 games with the Vipers, Jandric collected (34-goals-39-assists-73-points).

Blizzard Name Former Vernon Laker Naylor New Head Coach/GM:

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League OCN Blizzard have named former

Vernon Lakers forward new Head Coach/GM.

Naylor spent the past four seasons with the Nanaimo Clippers as Head Coach/GM, Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations.


Naylor and associate coach Colin Birkas were placed in administrative leave on February 11th 2022 after the BCHL announced an investigation into alleged breaches of the league’s code of conduct. In a social media post on March 9th 2022 the league stated “the investigation has been partly completed but is still ongoing. To ensure fairness in the process, the BCHL has determined that Colin Birkas can return to the coaching staff of the Clippers.” Naylor will remain on administrative leave until at least May 31st 2022.


Naylor played three seasons in the COHL, CHL, SUHL, PHL, WCHL & NAL from 1993-1996 with six different teams, before retiring from professional hockey in 1996. Naylor was a Scout and been coaching since 2005. Naylor was Head Coach/GM of the PIJHL Delta Ice Hawks from 2016-2018 before joining the Nanaimo Clippers in 2017.

Naylor played parts of one season in Vernon with the 1989-90 Vernon Lakers. Naylor was traded to Vernon during the 1989-90 season. The Lakers were Naylor's third team in his final season of Junior hockey. In 20 games with the Lakers, Naylor collected (8-goals-27-assists-35-points).

The Vernon Lakers were around from 1980-1983 & 1984-1995 before changing their name to the Vernon Vipers in 1995.

Camrose Kodiaks Trade Former Viper Lorenz To Surrey:

The Alberta Junior Hockey League Camrose Kodiaks have traded former

Vernon Vipers forward Logan Lorenz to the Surrey Eagles in a three-team trade.

Lorenz played parts of two seasons in Vernon from 2020-2021 was traded to the Prince George Spruce Kings November 29th 2021 for Max Borovinskiy. Lorenz was recruited by the Vernon Vipers, committed to the Vipers June 10th 2020. In 38 games with the Vipers, Lorenz collected (8-goals-6-assists-14-points).

Ex Viper Bilous Commits To Southern Alberta Institute Of Technology:

Former Vernon Vipers tryout goaltender Boston Bilous has committed

to Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Bilous played last season with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Estevan Briuns. In 40 games, Bilous went 25-9-4 with a 2.11 GAA

Bilous played four seasons in the Western Hockey League from 2017-2020 with Edmonton, Prince Albert & Moose Jaw. Bilous was drafted 80th overall by the Edmonton Oil Kings in Round 4 of the 2016 Western Hockey League Draft. 

Bilous attended the Vernon Vipers training camp in August 2015.

Swamp Rabbits Give Vipers Alumni Coughlin Qualifying Offer:

The ECHL released the list of players who received a valid qualifying offer

from ECHL teams by the June 30 deadline. The ECHL  have 8 players listed on qualifying offers. One of those eight players is former Vernon Vipers defencemen Johnny Coughlin.

ECHL announces Qualifying Offers


Coughlin played the 2021-22 season with the ECHL Greenville Swamp Rabbits & Cincinnati Cyclones. The Cyclones traded Coughlin to Greenville January 28th 2022. In 24 games last season with the Swamp Rabbits, Coughlin collected (2-goals-12-assists-14-points).


Greenville's Head Coach/GM & director of hockey operations is former Vernon Vipers forward Andrew Lord. Lord has spent the past two seasons with the Swamp Rabbits. Lord played with the Vernon Vipers from 2002-2004. Former Vernon Vipers forward Ayden MacDoanld played last season with the Swamp Rabbits played with the 2014-15 Vernon Vipers.

Coughlin played four seasons at the College of Holy Cross from 2015-2019 before signing his first professional contract with the ECHL Maine Mariners March 15th 2019. Coughlin has spent his entire professional career playing in the ECHL with the Mainer Mariners, Norfolk Admirals, Rapid City Rush, Cincinnati Cyclones and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. 

Coughlin played one season in Vernon with the 2014-15 Vernon Vipers. In 55 games with the Vipers, Coughlin collected (3-goals-15-assists-18-points).
