Former Grizzlie Mokhtari returns in enemy colours

SEPTEMBER 28, 2017

A fan favourite is returning to The Q Centre tonight, albeit in opposition colours.

Keyvan Mokhtari — dubbed the Roadrunner by some for his speed — and his new club, the Vernon Vipers, pay the Victoria Grizzlies a visit for the first time since the now 19-year-old winger was traded to the Interior Division club in late June for future considerations.

“It’ll be a weird experience for sure. Victoria was my home for two years and now I’ll be getting dressed on the other side of the building,” said Mokhtari, who knew a trade was likely coming in the off-season.

“I wasn’t surprised. I was intent on going to the USHL [Lincoln] at that point, so I figured that my rights would get sent somewhere else so that they would get something in return.

“Victoria was great for me for two years and I felt it was time for me to take a new step in my career and Vernon is where I landed. Talking it over with my parents and adviser, it made more sense to stay,” he added of remaining in the B.C. Hockey League instead of moving south.

“It’s been good. I’m enjoying myself,” said Mokhtari, who has a goal and three assists in six games. His goal came short-handed, which he became synonymous with in his time in Victoria. “I’m adjusted now. The first two weeks were different, but so far it’s been pretty smooth.”

He has remained in contact with his former teammates in Victoria, including Drayson Pears, Lucas Clark, Dayne Finnson and Jamie Rome.

“I lived with Pears for two years so we’ll always be friends,” said Mokhtari, who has kept an eye on how his former club is doing. The Grizzlies are 4-2-0-0 while the Vipers are 4-1-0-1. “I saw they did well at the Showcase this weekend so we’re looking forward to a good game when we get there.”

Asked how he expects to be received by fans on his return, he stated: “Hopefully, they’re welcoming and there’s no booing.

“You never know, they always want the home team to win,” Mokhtari said with a chuckle. “But, honestly, I don’t know what to expect.”

Mokhtari had 19 goals and 17 assists in 47 games last season for Victoria and added three tallies and four assists in the playoffs. One post-season goal was the double-overtime effort that helped the Grizzlies come back on the Powell River Kings in Game 7 of the second round. He notched that game-winner at 57 seconds of double OT to clinch the series as the Grizzlies battled back from a 3-2 games deficit in the best-of-seven.

In his rookie season in Victoria he collected 11 goals and 19 helpers as a 17-year-old.

Mokhtari, who has committed to play at Colorado College next season, is currently playing on a line with Niko Karamanis and Jordan Sandhu.

New Arena On Time And On Budget:

On time and on budget

Kate Bouey - Sep 7, 2017

Work on a $13 million ice sheet at Kal Tire Place is moving quickly ahead, on time and on budget.

“This is the ideal situation rather than being over budget,” said Doug Ross, recreation service director for the City of Vernon.

Four months into the construction phase, the second arena on the site is starting to take shape.

“The work on the interior spaces of the new board room and Vernon Vipers offices have been completed and the team moved in around the beginning of August,” Ross stated in a report to council.

“With the project having passed key milestones such as excavation and foundation work, we have proceeded as planned with the fixed fee price agreement for the purchase of a second plate and frame chiller. This item was identified by the refrigeration consultant as being a priority for the project should the funds be available.”

While chillers may not set you on fire, Ross explained that the second chiller will enable the facility to have temperature differential on each ice sheet – allowing hockey to be played on one sheet while figure skating was taking place on the other.

BCHL REPORT - Junior Hockey News

Published: Tuesday, 26 Sep 2017

By: Stephen Heisler  |  Web site: JuniorHockey.com

The BCHL Report is a weekly look at Canada’s British Columbia Hockey League. The BCHL Insider is exactly that...a coach, or employee, with incredible insight into the league.

ISLAND

Powell River (4-1-1-0) – Head Coach Kent Lewis’ Kings can score in bunches, that’s been proven in three of their wins where they tallied 26 times. The problem has been in the low scoring affairs. The season is still young and these things tend to balance themselves out. The Kings are a very dangerous bunch that will give every team on the schedule fits. Alberni Valley visits Saturday night.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS: This team has a lot of firepower and is very tough in their home rink. Could be a long night for the Bulldogs.

Nanaimo (4-1-0-1) – Head Coach Mike Vandekamp’s Clippers looked solid at the BCHL Showcase, taking both the high-powered Chiefs and Wild to double overtime each day. Nanaimo travels to Weyhaeuser Arena Friday to face the Bulldogs. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: A good start but this team will have its hands full trying to keep up with Powell River and Victoria all year.

Victoria (4-2-0-0) – Craig Didmon’s Grizzlies picked up a pair of wins at the Showcase, again proving the point that Victoria will be a force this season. Vernon comes to The Q Friday before Langley visits Saturday.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  It was a convincing win over Prince George, but Vernon will provide a solid challenge. The Grizzlies will need to be consistent to keep up with Powell River.

Alberni Valley (1-3-0-1) – Matt Hughes’ Bulldogs proved to everyone in the building that this team is out to prove something this season. Alberni Valley took Vernon to double overtime before ending the game in a draw. Go ahead and ask the Vees what their thoughts are about the Bulldogs too, the Vees needed a pair of 3rd period goals to get past the Dogs. Nanaimo comes to town Friday before the Bulldogs visit Powell River on Saturday. Langley is in on Sunday. BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  The Bulldogs have some early season swagger but if they don’t start converting some W’s it’ll be same old, same old at Weyerhauser Arena.

Cowichan Valley (1-4-0-1) – No, the Capitals are not going to be content with a single win in five games to start the season. The pair of one-goal losses at the Showcase proves that the slow start is more of an unlucky issue than anything else. Let’s see what happens this weekend with visits to Wenatchee, Merritt, and Coquitlam.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS: This weekend schedule is a lot tougher than it looks. Merritt and Coquitlam are 0-10-1 between them but the travel alone will exhaust the Caps.

INTERIOR

Trail (4-1-1-0) – Head Coach Cam Keith’s Smokies are sitting pretty atop the Interior and have to be all smiles. Trail picked up two big wins at the Showcase and will be trying to hold onto that momentum when Chilliwack visits Friday night. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: Trail plays hard at home and they’ve got enough veterans to make some noise. Chilliwack is reeling but won’t stay down for long.

Vernon (4-1-0-1) – Head Coach Mark Ferner can’t be all that excited about the Vipers’ offense after lighting the lamp only twice at the Showcase. Water under the bridge boys, I’m thinking the flow will be back in time for this weekend’s trip to Victoria, Nanaimo, and Surrey. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: Vernon is a team that’s built to endure through a long season. Look for the Snakes to get 4 or 5 of the 6 points on the swing.

Penticton (4-0-0-0) – Head Coach Fred Harbinson’s Vees picked up the expected wins at the Showcase. Alberni Valley presented more problems than expected while the win over Chilliwack was interesting enough. West Kelowna visits Friday. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: Face it, Penticton is Penticton. They’ll be ready to go at the SOEC on Friday.

West Kelowna (4-1-0-0) – Coach Rylan Ferster’s Warriors picked up two big wins at the Showcase and will look to maintain that trend when they visit Langley and Penticton this week. Chilliwack visits Saturday. BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  Are the Warriors really a 4-1-0 team, or have they caught some early season breaks? After this three-game set, we’ll have a lot better picture of how good this team really is.

Wenatchee (3-1-0-1) – Wild Head Coach Bliss Littler is content with his team’s effort at the Showcase; getting the shutout win over Langley was a huge plus. Cowichan Valley visits Town Toyota Center this week. BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  This team is a typical Bliss Littler team, with skill and speed. And his teams win. Only one Wild game this week means an uphill battle for the Capitals this week.

Salmon Arm (2-4-0-0) – Head Coach Scott Atkinson’s team took advantage of their opportunities at Showcase, getting their first two wins of the season. Coquitlam and a dangerous Trail both visit the Shaw Centre this weekend.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  Home ice will help, but it will still be two hard fought battles with Coquitlam looking for their first win and Trail being a division game.

Merritt (0-6-0-0) – Head Coach Joe Martin’s Cents are not nearly as bad as their zero for six record may indicate. Look for Merritt to break through this week with Surrey, Cowichan Valley, and Prince George visiting.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS: The best place for Merritt to snap out of their funk is on the small ice surface at Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. Expect three points for the Cents.

MAINLAND

Prince George (4-1-0-1) – Head Coach Adam Maglio’s Spruce Kings were beaten for the first time this season at the Showcase; a 5-0 shutout at the hands of Victoria. How will they respond? Prince George visits Surrey, Coquitlam, and Merritt this week to give us the answer. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: Prince George surprised a lot of people in the playoffs last year and that momentum has carried over to the new season. The loss to Victoria was just a bump in the road.

Langley (2-1-2-0) – Head Coach Bobby Henderson’s boys were shutout at the Showcase by Wenatchee and will have to find a way to reverse the course in time for tonight’s home battle with West Kelowna. The Rivermen visit Victoria and Alberni Valley Saturday and Sunday. BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  The Rivermen have a tendency to be their own worst enemy. If they can avoid those mistakes, they can be more of a threat.

Chilliwack (1-3-1-1) – Head Coach Jason Tatarnic is navigating some unfamiliar territory; his team has only one win in six games so far this season. That’s not going to cut it and I’m thinking things are going to get turned around in a hurry. The Chiefs visit Trail and West Kelowna this week. BCHL INSIDER SAYS: This start is completely unacceptable for a team set to host the RBC. If they don’t come home from the Interior Division swing with 4 points, watch for a fistful of roster moves to begin.

Surrey (1-3-1-1) – Brandon West’s Eagles are winless in five straight games after opening the season with a win on September 8th. West knows what takes to find success within the league and will do whatever it takes to get that job done. The Eagles visit Merritt tomorrow night before hosting Prince George and Vernon Friday and Sunday. BCHL INSIDER SAYS:  This team has some talent as good as anyone in the league. Just not enough of them. Lack of depth is a problem that will continue to give the Eagles trouble. Still, at home, they’re perfectly capable of stealing a game from anyone.

Coquitlam (0-4-0-1) – Barry Wolf’s Express are still looking for the first win of the season after dropping both of their games at the BCHL Showcase. Coquitlam visits Salmon Arm Friday before hosting Prince George and Cowichan Valley Saturday and Sunday.  BCHL INSIDER SAYS: Coach Barry Wolff has the tough task of turning around an atmosphere that’s become conditioned to accept defeat. They’ll get a taste of victory this weekend.

Rookie forward was among NCAA leaders in faceoffs with R.I.T.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Solar Bears have agreed to terms with rookie forward Todd Skirving for the 2017-18 season.

“We feel Todd will be able to jump right into our lineup and contribute right away,” Solar Bears head coach Drake Berehowsky said. “He plays a smart, two-way game which we value, and he brings a strong work ethic.”

Skirving, 25, completed a four-year college career with the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2016-17, logging three points (1g-2a) and six penalty minutes in 17 games before an injury cut his season short. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound forward led his team in the faceoff dot with a .613 win percentage (111 faceoffs won on 181 draws), a figure that was the best in the Atlantic Hockey conference and fifth-best in all of Division I hockey.

Skirving amassed 51 points (19g-32a) and 56 penalty minutes in 127 career games with the Tigers, and helped the program capture back-to-back Atlantic Hockey playoff titles in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, Skirving and the Tigers knocked off Minnesota State in the first round of the NCAA tournament, becoming the first #16 seed to defeat the top overall seed since the 16-team format was introduced in 2003.

“I decided to continue my playing career with the Solar Bears because of the opportunity I’d have to build as a player on and off the ice for a first-class organization and coaching staff,” Skirving said. “I’m excited to wear the Solar Bears uniform and cannot wait to get down to Orlando and do whatever possible to help the team take that next step forward with the end goal of capturing the Kelly Cup.”

Prior to skating for R.I.T., the Thunder Bay, Ontario native also played two seasons of junior hockey with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League. Skirving captained the Stampede in 2012-13 and concluded his USHL career with 70 points (40g-30a) and 59 penalty minutes in 114 games.

The Orlando Solar Bears are the proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL’s Toronto Marlies, and play all of their home games at the ARS.com Rink at Amway Center, the 2012 Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year.

The Vernon Vipers were averaging close to five goals a game until the B.C. Hockey League Bauer Showcase in Chilliwack.

The Vipers had their undefeated streak snapped at six games with a 2-1 loss to the Powell River Kings in a Friday matinee at Prospera Centre.

Vernon and Alberni Valley Bulldogs tied 1-1 in double overtime Friday night at Prospera Centre.

Josh Coblenz scored 84 seconds into the third period as Powell River won their fourth in five starts. Ben Berard drew the assist. Kyle Kawamura added security into an empty net with 42 seconds remaining. Coblenz and Berard earned helpers.

Keyvan Mokhtari replied for the Snakes on a powerplay with 10 seconds left. Brett Stapley assisted.

Mitch Adamyk recorded 35 saves for the Kings, while Anthony Yamnitsky blocked 28 shots for the Vipers. Powell River was 0-for-8 on the powerplay, Vernon 0-for-3.

First star John Hawthorne recorded 43 saves for the Bulldogs Thursday night.

“He played well but he didn’t steal the game for them,” said Viper assistant coach Kevin Kraus. “He made a couple of big breakaway saves on Jimmy Lambert and some nice backdoor stops. Ty (Taylor) played well for us too, especially in the first period (shots were 10 apiece).”

The Vipers, who had won their first four games, got 27 saves from Taylor.

The Dawgs (1-2-0-1) went ahead at 8:52 of the second period on a powerplay snipe by Ryan Steele.
ex-Viper d-man Darren Rizzolo and Tyson Slater drew assists. The goal came just 10 seconds into a double high sticking minor assessed to blueliner Shane Kelly, chosen second star.

Vernon equalized at 6:56 of the third period when rookie d-man Jack Judson converted unassisted after a 20-second fray.

“He did a nice job pulling the puck out of the scramble and going backhand,” said Kraus.

Steele received a major for checking Vernon leading scorer Jimmy Lambert from behind two minutes after the Alberni goal. Lambert suffered cuts to his nose and cheek. He went for medical attention but returned to action. Lambert was named third star.

“They (Dawgs) played us the right way, taking away our time and space,” said Kraus. “The guys are pretty positive. We know we can play better and today will be a big test.”

The Vipers take on the high-scoring Powell River Kings today at 1 p.m. The Kings have three wins an an overtime loss while racking up a league-high 27 goals.

In other Thursday action, the West Kelowna Warriors clipped the Cowichan Valley Capitals 2-1, the Salmo0n Arm Silverbacks shaded the Surrey Eagles 3-2 in overtime and the Langley Rivermen edged the Merritt Centennials 4-3.

Vernon’s Matt Kowalski assisted on Stephen Kieysen’s winner midway through the second period for West Kelowna.

Austin Chorney connected at 2:18 of overtime as Salmon Arm won their second straight at the Showcase.

Nicholas Ponak’s shorthanded tally with 2:57 remaining lifted the Rivermen past the winless Cents.

Kowalski counted 1+2 and earned second star as the Warriors torched the Coquitlam Express 7-2 Wednesday night.

Josh Latta supplied two goals as the Silverbacks trimmed Cowichan Valley 3-2 Wednesday for their first win of the season.

The Prince George Spruce Kings announced their leadership core for the upcoming 2017-18 season. General Manager Mike Hawes and Head Coach Adam Maglio have named 19-year-old forward Kyle Johnson as Team Captain. The Port Moody native exemplifies what it is to be a Spruce King through his hard work on and off the ice. He is also a great young man who is focused on his goals and sets a great example for his teammates. Jarod Hovde and Ben Brar will be Assistant Captains. Ben Poisson and Chays Ruddy will split the third Assistant Captain’s role. Johnson, Hovde, Brar, Poisson, Ruddy, and the rest of their Spruce Kings teammates begin the BCHL regular season this Friday and Saturday, September 8th and 9th with their home opener weekend against Mainland Division rivals, the Chilliwack Chiefs.

He played in two of the prestigious Minnesota State high school tournaments, scoring twice with four assists in eight games. Enebak has a scholarship to St. Cloud State University for the fall of 2019. “The addition of Henry brings another big body that plays a two-way game,” Vees head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson said. “Henry is a former captain who checks out as a great character kid.” Enebak will wear number 25 and make his Vees debut Friday, September 8 when the regular season begins in Merritt.

West Kelowna Warriors New Third Jerseys:

Chief Wannawin Retires:

Chief Wannawin – the mascot of the Chilliwack Chiefs Hockey Club for more than 20 years – will make his final appearance at Prospera Centre on Friday, September 15 when the Chiefs host the Langley Rivermen.  Fans of the popular character are urged to attend the game to bid a fond farewell to the retiring Cheerleader. Chief Wannawin has been the Club’s biggest booster since the mid 1990s and since then has attended virtually every home game and many championship games including the team’s appearance at the RBC Cup in Fort McMurray in 2000 and in Halifax in 2002.  In addition to games, the beloved mascot represented the Chiefs at countless community events, at schools and other Club functions where he was always the center of attention, especially for children. Several “face-lifts” over the years have helped him maintain his youthful and energetic appearance.  But time has taken its toll and has suggested that a new mascot and face of the Club take his place.  That new face will be revealed to Chiefs fans at the second home game of the season – on October 6. According to a CBC report….Chief David Jimmie of the Squiala First Nation says he urged the team to stop using the mascot and is pleased they are doing that. “I felt that in an age of reconciliation, and looking at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, that this was really not an acceptable mascot,” he said. In the report Jimmie told the reporter that he has no problem with the team’s name or logo — “They wear it with pride,” he said — and Squiala is holding a contest for an artist to design new jerseys for the team. Chilliwack is preparing to host the RBC National Championship next year and is making the right moves before inviting the rest of the country to take in the week-long event.

Vees Open Defence Of BCHL Crown Battling Key Injuries:

Things have gone well for the Penticton Vees the past few seasons, but it has been far from picture perfect. The perennial B.C. Hockey League powers have had their fair share of injury problems in recent campaigns, including getting just 22 regular-season games out of high-end defenceman Gabe Bast over the past two seasons combined. Penticton starts 2017-18 with key players on the sideline as well, as injured forwards Grant Cruikshank (undisclosed) and Massimo Rizzo (undisclosed) will both begin the campaign in the infirmary. The Junior A regular season begins Friday on seven fronts, including the reigning league champion Penticton visiting the Merritt Centennials. Cruikshank, 19, scored 32 times last season for Penticton in the regular season. Rizzo, 16, oddly enough got in five games in last year’s Royal Bank Cup national tournament as an underage call-up because of injuries with the Vees. “Every team deals with it,” Fred Harbinson, Penticton’s general manager and coach, said of having guys on the disabled list. “The players are bigger, stronger, faster and in better shape. At the same time, the game is so fast now and played so hard, there are injuries. You feel like you always have somebody out. “That’s where depth is so crucial. We had guys sitting out with us who had to come into the lineup and found ways to help us win.” Harbinson said that Rizzo, a Burnaby Winter Club product who was the 15th overall pick by the Kamloops Blazers in the 2016 WHL bantam draft, should be out a couple of weeks. He expects Cruikshank, the son of American speedskaters Bonnie Blair and Dave Cruikshank, to be out until the end of the month at least. Cruikshank, a native of Delafield, Wis., is committed to the University of Wisconsin. The Vees beat the Chilliwack Chiefs in seven games in the league final last spring. Penticton ended up losing to lost Ontario’s Cobourg Cougars in the Royal Bank Cup semifinals. Cobourg, the tournament hosts, won the event. Penticton should be a major factor in the 17-team BCHL once again this season. Their blue-line includes two NHL drafted players in newcomers Nicky Leivermann, 18, a 2017 Colorado Avalanche seventh rounder out of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Ryan O’Connell, 18, a 2017 Toronto Maple Leafs seventh rounder from Gloucester, Ont. The Chiefs, the Wenatchee Wild and Vernon Vipers are other teams of note to start. Wenatchee, the Washington State squad that won the BCHL regular season crown last season (45-9-4-0) but were knocked out of the playoffs by Chilliwack in the second round, shifted from the Mainland Division to the Interior in the off-season. The last three league champions and eight of the past 10 have come from the Interior.

Wild Name Vanderbeck Captain:

The Wenatchee Wild, proud members of the BCHL, have announced their team captain for the 2017-18 season will be returning forward AJ Vanderbeck. The announcement came during an exclusive dinner for Season Ticket Members on Thursday night at Town Toyota Center. Vanderbeck, from Monument, CO, is back for his second season with Wenatchee and fourth year of junior hockey. He played for the Lone Star Brahmas (NAHL) in 2014-15 and the Sioux Falls Musketeers (USHL) in 2015-16 before joining the Wild last season where he exploded for 39 goals and 66 points. “AJ is the kind of teammate that players naturally gravitate to, and that makes him a natural leader”, said Head Coach / GM Bliss Littler. “We’re excited to watch as he continues to develop in that role.” The Wild begin their regular season on the road at Merritt on Saturday, September 9. Wenatchee’s home opener is September 16 against the Vernon Vipers.
