I am so disappointed I really enjoy your column despite the year the Vipers had. You won't be reporting on the Vipers in the playoffs. Thanks for another great year your reporting is awesome!

Quote... "Many of the players still have opportunities to be scouted by universities to possibly earn a scholarship. The younger players who will have BCHL eligibility next year can show that they can help make a difference on next year's team." What a crock!!!

Time for Lomicky to look in the mirror and answer what he has done to help players earn scholarships. By over playing older players who already have scholarships? Or players who have Canadian University credits from time in the WHL? Or maybe not giving young players ice time to help them get ready for the next level, a good case in point would be goalie Cunningham. How about consistent lines so players have a chance to know their linemates, thus being able to play to their strengths? Seriously, what universities are scouting players from non playoff teams this late in the year?

How many scholarships were given out to players this year coached by Lomicky? It does not count players coming to the Vipers with scholarships already in place. This organization has done very little to develop players or prepare them for university life. Just look at how many players left to play elsewhere or asked to be traded. This organization asks everything of the players but gives very little back to those players.

Well said Marty, completely agree.

Is it possible that some of the blame be shifted to the players that simply didn’t perform up to expectations? I’m not outright saying there’s not blame to go around, coaches and ownership included…but lately all I see is piling on the coaching staff. If you have lazy players who won’t execute, it’s not like the coaches can suit up and do it themselves.

Lomicky's coaching career is over

Then who is the recruiter who brought in a team of lazy players that would not execute. At the start of the season a lot of good things were said about a number of high end players who were quickly gone from the team. All teams make some recruiting mistakes but I have never seen this many bt one team in one recruiting year.

Feel very bad for the 04s that were put into an extremely toxic environment and are now at the end of their Jr careers with a year wasted under this coach. Hopefully the 05s and younger can move on to find better situations and thrive in order to make it to the next level. This is no different than people working in a toxic work environment, quality of work will deteriorate over time.

Everything and anything is 100% on the owners, Tom and John Glenn, period!

John, it’s those very 04’s that are contributing to the “toxic” environment.

Certainly possible some of the recruits were not ready. BUT far too many of the kids that left have had great seasons in other leagues to say it was poor recruiting that led to this disgraceful season. I know a couple of the guys that left and they were told, during recruiting, they’d get a chance to play in every situation. Then showed up and barely played and when they asked what they needed to do to get and chance, were told “you’re young, you’ll play more next year”. So, the main problem is the coach. So bad he couldn’t keep Sparrow, who has major ties to the town and team. Just expected to be able to lie to guys and have them stick around and take it. So dumb.

Its sad when you have a owner with an attitude of my way or the highway because all you end up with is a coaching staff of YES MEN. This applies to billets to who are not happy this year with the revolving door of players as the player has no relationship with its billet. Sad as the billets complain and again my way or the highway. Oh well two more home games.lets go out on a wiining note.go vipers go.

The only time they had a chance at the playoffs was when before the season started then, a six game losing streak to start the season and it was game over from then on.

True, recruiting has been poor. But if you bring in players with potential and THEY decide to tune out…that makes for an uphill climb. I was part of a team that shouldn’t won a championship, but because internally, a handful of players decided to check out…boom, season over. And we were led by a good coach too, but was helpless against the entitlement staring back at him.

Tim... you made a couple of good comments but does it not go back to recruiting and doing background checks of players before you offer them the opportunity to play for your team? Recruiters must do their due diligence just like any hiring in the real world. Then if players commit to the team and either are lazy or tune out the coaches then they must be released. No one has an issue with that however a lot of us have issue with the way players are recruited, made promises to and then are not even given an opportunity and are moved or released immediately. That is not acceptable and will certainly hurt future recruiting. The hockey world is not that big, teams do get bad reputations for their recruiting and poor player management.

And, if you check my original post I just did not "pile on the coaching staff" for no reason, rather I responded to Lomicky's quote on Castanet. He is making comments that he himself is not backing up.

Tim said...

That wasn’t directed at you, apologies if it seemed that way…there have been other commenters on this site that continually pile on coaches, owner, etc.

Have talked to a billet, they are not happy with ownership!

Marty nailed it. You can’t lie to guys to get them to sign and expect that good players won’t leave or request trades or releases. There are too many options these days. Furthermore, that has really destroyed the credibility of the team/coach/recruiter because now it’s out there and the top talent will steer away from Vernon. Look at that Defenceman who refused to report after a trade. I don’t know exactly why he didn’t show up but I have a pretty good idea. NO player wants to be in an environment like this. Unless there are BIG changes, nothing will get better.
