The Wenatchee Wild did it to the Vernon Vipers, the Vipers did it to the Merritt Centennials.
The Snakes spoiled the Centennials B.C. Hockey League 2018-19 home opener Saturday, scoring a 5-2 decision over the Centennials in front of 383 at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.
The loss came 24 hours after the defending league champion Wild scored three unanswered goals in a 4:52 span midway through the third period for a 5-3 win over the Vipers, ruining Vernon's home opener in front of 2,322 fans at Kal Tire Place, wich included new team co-owner John Glen of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. Glen was presenteda red Vipers jersey with No. 1 stitched on the back along with Glen's name by out-going owner Libby Wray.
"I thought in the first period, we were still a little nervous but we got stronger as the game went on," said Vernon head coach Mark Ferner of Saturday's win.
"I thought we took a good step forward. I told the kids after the game that everyone had an impact. We were doing a lot of good things away from the puck and our effort was better as the game went on."
Nicolas Wildgoose, with the winner, Michael Young, Jesse Lansdell, Jack Judson and Alex Swetlikoff scored for Vernon.
Aidan Porter made his second straight start in goal, making 23 saves for his first BCHL victory. Porter stopped 31 in the loss to the Wild.
