Kal Tire Place North is open

Josh Winquist - Sep 8, 2018

It's been a long time coming, but Kal Tire Place North is officially open to the public.

The $13-million project took a little less than a year-and-a-half to build.

The arena was years in the making. First, the public was consulted. Then, a feasibility study was launched, where it came out twinning Kal Tire Arena was the best option.

How to pay for the new arena was brought forward in a referendum, to which residents gave the go-ahead to borrow $13.25 million.

Back when shovels hit the ground in April 2017, Doug Ross, City of Vernon's director of recreation services, said it would take 15 months to complete, and the arena would be open in the fall of 2018.

Staying true to his word, led to Ross gaining the nickname "Mr. On time and on Budget."

The official ribbon cutting kicked off a weekend of activities to celebrate the opening on Kal tire Place North.

On Saturday, from 10-2 p.m., the public is invited for a free skate at the new arena.

Then, on Saturday night, two of Canada's most iconic rock bands, Platinum Blonde and Loverboy take to the stage at Kal Tire Place South.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with Platinum Blonde taking to the stage at 7:30.

Tickets are available at Ticket Seller or 549-SHOW.

And finally, the grand opening festivities carry into Sunday with more music from several bands including Erick Chirkoff, Sean Lightfoot Band and the Young Uns at Kal Tire South starting at 11 a.m.

All day Sunday all activities are free to the public.

There is a 50-plus shinny hockey game that will start at 10:30, then skate with the Vipers from noon until 2, and come and try ringette and speed skating and figure skating throughout the afternoon.

There will also be off-ice activities with a wealth of food trucks, bouncy castles and a play area for kids as well as an outdoor market with local artisans and food retailers.

Castanet will be going live all day Saturday with the events leading up to the concert.
