Search and rescue volunteers have found two snowmobilers missing since Saturday in a popular snowmobiling area on a mountain near Revelstoke.
RCMP say the men were found around 1 p.m. Sunday, cold but in good health. Members of Revelstoke Search and Rescue transported the men off the mountain.
Police want to remind recreational snowmobilers that it is important to have appropriate equipment and training when going into the backcountry.
According to a media release from the Revelstoke RCMP’s detachment commander, Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky, the two men, Taylor Dumonceaux and Andrew MacLeod, both 24, were reported missing around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, after they did not return to the Boulder Mountain parking lot.
The pair, who are from Kelowna, had rented snowmobiles from a local rental company.
They were to meet the rental company at the end of the day at the parking lot but they didn’t show up. A vehicle belonging to one of them was located in the parking lot and their families reported they hadn’t been heard from.
Grabinsky said the pair had limited snowmobile experience, though they did rent a flare kit and an avalanche pack along with the snowmobiles. They were not believed to be prepared for a frigid night in the backcountry; they likely had not packed food, water or overnight equipment.
What area the pair were intending to travel into was not clear and attempts to locate their mobile phones were unsuccessful. Grabinsky said they may have been seen in an area on Boulder Mountain called the Toilet Bowl.
The RCMP closed the Boulder Mountain snowmobiling area Sunday while Revelstoke Search and Rescue led a search of the area using both people on the ground as well as helicopters. They had also searched the mountain for about five hours Saturday evening.
“The Revelstoke RCMP appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience while this area is being searched,” Grabinsky said. “This provides SAR a more effective opportunity to locate any persons or sleds on the mountain. This has been done in the past with success. If this is not effective, other means including the re-opening of the mountain, will be considered.”
“Thank you for respecting the closure,” Revelstoke Search and Rescue said on their Facebook page.
Two years ago, a snowmobiler from Alberta was lost in the same area. He was found dead nearly a week later.
