Chris Jandric Named WCHA Defenseman of the Week
FAIRBANKS, Alaska – So., Defenseman, Chris Jandric of the Alaska Nanooks hockey team was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week for his play on Oct. 11-12 at Michigan Tech. The Nanooks team won both contests, 3-2 and 2-1 with the help of timely goals from the defenseman. These were the first wins of the season for the Alaska squad who moved to 2-2-0, 2-0-0-0 WCHA.
Jandric accounted for both game-winning goals, a stat he currently leads the entire Men's NCAA Division 1 in. In game one, Jandric found the back of the net while on the power play. He took a centering pass from behind the goal from Max Newton and put it away on a back-hand, making it 3-0 at the time. They would win that game, 3-2.
In game two, Jandric found himself on the same half of the ice, and same side of the net when he sent a shot towards the net. The shot caught the skate of the goaltender and found its way into the net for the Nanooks second goal of the game, and Jandric's second of the weekend series. This goal gave the Nanooks a 2-0 lead at the time, eventually winning, 2-1. These wins were the first for Alaska against the Huskies of Michigan Tech since 2014, as they also claimed their first series win since that same season.
Head coach Erik Largen had this to say about Jandric being named Defenseman of the Week, "Chris came up with two clutch goals for us. We are looking for him to continue to grow and develop as a great all-around defenseman."
This is the first time Chris Jandric has been awarded the Defenseman of the Week award. Last year, as a freshman, Jandric was named WCHA Rookie of the Week once and was named to the All-Rookie Team.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will have a short week ahead of them, as they head to Penn State to face off with the #8/9 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions beginning Thursday, Oct. 17.
