I watched Nicholas Kent at the Vipers Spring camp in May. He was one of if not the main defenceman that has impressed me during Spring Camp. A very good smooth skating d-man, can move and carry the puck, quick, plays well at both ends of the rink, jumps up into the play, gets involved in the play and good defensively. I don't remember him playing in the BCHL but Kent played 24 games with the 2017-18 Wenatchee Wild. Kent split last season between the OJHL Buffalo Jr Sabres and the USHL Green Bay Gamblers. Kent was drafted 147th overall in 2016 by the Western Hockey League Saskatoon Blades. Kent was also drafted 24th overall by the USHL Green Bay Gamblers in 2017.

Counting the possible 15 players returning from last year, the six new recruits that have committed for the up coming season and now Nicholas Kent, this puts the Vipers roster at 22 one short of the league limit 23. Its only June and the Vipers 23 man roster is almost full. I know it's still early and there's still two months until training camp, but you have to wonder will the Vipers go into training camp with their roster already in tact? Or we will see some trades-roster moves before training camp?

With the addition of Kent, the Vipers now have nine defencemen trying to fit onto the team. Returning from last season are Fuller, Dow-Kenny, Judson, Kim, and Taylor. New are MacLean, Hacuisuka, Felton, and Kent. The most surprising thing is that all but Taylor are right hand shots, with Taylor the only lefthander. I know some guys can play on the offside, but it does seem overloaded on the right.

Some coaches really like to balance their defenders with a pairing of a righty and a lefty. VandeKamp was big on this. Maybe McKee isn't. But it seems a veteran or two will be leaving.
