Vipers sign Shaw
By Graeme Corbett - Vernon Morning Star
Published: July 15, 2011
Good thing Vernon Vipers’ head coach Jason Williamson doesn’t hold a grudge.
Among the pile of applications for the vacant assistant coaching job with the Snakes this season was one from Chris Shaw, who Williamson knows all too well from his days as a hard-nosed forward and captain of the Vipers in the B.C. Hockey League.
“We’re the same age (30) so we played in the league together and we actually fought once,” recalled Williamson, as he discussed Shaw’s appointment to the assistant’s position Tuesday afternoon.
The duo were recruited by the NCAA Division 1 Niagara Purple Eagles in their 20-year-old BCHL seasons, and have since become good friends. Williamson stayed in Niagara to secure a business degree, while Shaw, who was coach/GM of the KIJHL Nelson Leafs last season, went on to play six seasons of minor pro across North America in the ECHL, CHL and UHL.
Much like the relationship he and former Viper head coach Mark Ferner developed over the last four seasons, Williamson says he shares a similar mind-set with Shaw.
“You have to trust someone who works with you and Chris and I already have a good relationship,” said Williamson.
Regarding their junior tilt, Shaw grinned: “I was a defencman with the Burnaby Bulldogs and he was a forward for the Vipers. We were both similar players, played similar roles, both captains of our team.
“We share very similar philosophies, we played the game the same way and we know what it’s like being players recently.”
Shaw, a White Rock native, says he likely wouldn’t have considered an assistant coaching job in the BCHL, but when he learned of the vacancy in Vernon, combined with Williamson’s promotion to head coach, it was a “no-brainer.”
“I couldn’t be more excited. Ever since I started coaching I’ve always wanted to progress and move to the best possible spot.”
Shaw, who has previous coaching experience with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, KIJHL Penticton Lakers and the Okanagan Hockey Academy, piloted the Leafs to a 25-22-0-3 record in 20010-11. Nelson pushed the Beaver Valley Nitehawks to Game 7, falling in the first round of the KIJHL playoffs.

Nelson Leafs Head Coach Moves On:

Nelson Leafs head coach moves on
By Megan Cole - Nelson Star
Published: July 13, 2011
The Nelson Leafs are looking for a new head coach and general manager after Chris Shaw made a decision to take a position with the BC Hockey League’s Vernon Vipers.
Shaw says that the position had come up suddenly after changes were made to the coaching staff at the Vipers.
"Mark Verner took a position a head coaching job with the WHL in Everett, and Jason Williamson was promoted to the head coach position in Vernon," he says. "I had a relationship with Jason previously and he called me up and asked if I would take the assistant coach position for him."
Until the call from Williamson, Shaw says that he had every intention of staying in Nelson and coaching the 2011-12 season.
"It was out of the blue and it was an opportunity I really had to think about, but at the end of the day it was an opportunity for me to move up to another level," he says.
Shaw had only been with the Leafs for a year, piloting them a 25-22-0-3 record. Nelson pushed the Beaver Valley Nitehawks to game seven in the first round of the KIJHL playoffs, but were eliminated.
"I was building a team here to win a championship and put the best possible product on the ice. I had worked really hard in the last six months as far as recruiting to bring in guys that would be a great fit with Nelson," he says.
If a championship is what Shaw is after, then the Vipers are a good team to work with. They are six time national champions and the BCHL's 2012 Fred Page Cup champions.
Shaw had previous coaching experience also with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, KIJHL Penticton Lakers and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
Vipers head coach Williamson knows Shaw from playing in the BCHL against each other.
“We’re the same age (30) so we played in the league together and we actually fought once,” recalled Williamson, as he discussed Shaw’s appointment Tuesday afternoon.

Shaw says that going to Vernon what he'll take from his experience with the Leafs is working in a community that is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about hockey.
"Being a first year head coach coming into Nelson, I really learned a lot as far as communication with players and what the city's expectations are for it's junior hockey players," he says.

Former Captain Has Big Shoes To Fill:
This past week Vernon Viper fans got news they didnt want to hear but knew it was coming. Head Coach & GM Mark Ferner had left the hockey club to sign and join the WHL Everett Silvertips. What an amazing four years Ferner had here going 165-51-7-17 making it to the last three straight RBC Cups winning two of them. After taking a very young, in-experienced team this past season back to the National Finals for a third straight season you knew teams at a higher level would be calling the Vipers office. Viper fans were very spoiled and very lucky to have watched some great hockey over the past four seasons, under Mark Ferner. Its not very often that a Junior team makes it to three straight RBC Cups. The Vernon Lakers went to four straight Centennial Cups (1989-1992) winning back to back titles in 1990 & 1991. This past three seasons have been pretty special as it will be a very long time before anyone see's a club make it to three straight RBC Cups again. I was very lucky and able to make it and watch the last three Royal Bank Cups, something I will remember and never forget. What a run it was. Im sure Mark has learned alot from his days here in Vernon and will do just fine in Everett, myself along with every other Vipers fan will truly miss you but wish you all the best with the Silvertips! Thanks for some great memories coach!
Former Vernon Vipers captain and assistant coach, Jason Williamson now steps in as the teams new head coach & GM. Willie who along with former Vipers captain, Chris Crowell are the other two players to have had the chance to captain the Vipers in back to back years. Willie played with the Vipers (1999-2001) and has been the teams assistant coach the past four seasons. Im sure Jason has learned alot under Mark Ferner and has alot to learn as a rookie head coach & GM, but I think was great choice for the job and will do just fine. Williamson who at just 30 yrs old is a younger coach that can relate to the players, being a former Viper-captain Willie knows what it means to be a Viper as well as knows what it means to win, winning back to back RBC Cups in 2009 and 2010. Over the past three seasons Williamson has gained the experience making the trip to the RBC Cup three straight years in a row.
As a rookie head coach and GM I wonder how Jason will do as the teams GM? Im sure their will be alot of veteran coaches-GM's trying to school the former Viper with a few trades. My biggest concern is the teams recruiting, Mark Ferner had some very solid contacts, will have to see how Jason does in the recruiting side of things. Im sure this years team is basically already picked, but it will be interesting to see what next years team looks like. You have to wonder if Jason will make any sudden changes before training camp starts? Will he keep any of the players that Mark recruited and had on the team last year? You can bet Willie will have a more bigger, stronger, and physical team then Mark Ferner.
I really like Jason and think he will do just fine. It will be interesting to see who they hire as the new assistant coach? With just over 40 something days until training camp, Im already getting excited for the new season to get underway. Congrats on the new job Jason and all the best this coming season!
Let's take a look at all former Viper coaches and their records.
Mark Ferner (2007-2011) Regular season record: 165-51-7-17
Troy Mick (1996-2000) Regular season record: 161-61-18
Mike Vandekamp (2001-2005) Regular season record: 159-57-11-13
Rob Bremner (1992-1996) (Bremner coached both the Vernon Lakers & Vipers) Regular season record: 137-93-10
Mark Holick (2006-07) Regular season record: 37-19-1-3
Birnie Pimm (2005-06) Regular season record: 30-18-2-6
Joe Oliver (2000-01) Regular season record: 24-26-10
Former Vernon Vipers captain and assistant coach, Jason Williamson now steps in as the teams new head coach & GM. Willie who along with former Vipers captain, Chris Crowell are the other two players to have had the chance to captain the Vipers in back to back years. Willie played with the Vipers (1999-2001) and has been the teams assistant coach the past four seasons. Im sure Jason has learned alot under Mark Ferner and has alot to learn as a rookie head coach & GM, but I think was great choice for the job and will do just fine. Glads Season-Ending Roster
Thursday, June 16, 2011
The Gwinnett Gladiators season ending roster was released today comprised of 6 defensemen, 11 forwards and one goaltender. Season-Ending Rosters cannot include any players who did not sign an ECHL contract in 2010-11.
The Gladiators season ending roster includes defensemen Paul Flache, Cody Brookwell, Dallas Jackson, Tim Filangieri, Will Colbert, Justin Milo and forwards Dustin Cameron, Andy Brandt, John-Scott Dickson, Devin Timberlake, Matt Francis, Kyle Kucharski, Ryan Garbutt, Derek Nesbitt, Tim Miller, Aaron Bendickson and Tom Zanoski in addition to goaltender Garrett Zemlak.
Each team is entitled to reserve rights to a maximum of eight players from the list of 20 by extending a qualifying offer no later than July 1. Of the eight qualified players, no more than four can be veterans (260 regular season professional hockey games played as of the start of the 2011-12 season). Players on open qualifying offers cannot be traded. Teams are not required to extend a qualifying offer to players who sign a contract prior to July 1.
The qualifying offer must remain open for acceptance until Aug. 1 at which time the qualifying offer becomes null and void and the team may sign the qualified player to any salary or may elect to take no further action. Teams that extend a valid qualifying offer to a non-veteran player shall retain the rights to that qualified player for one playing season.
A team that extends a valid qualifying offer to a veteran player will retain the rights to that veteran until Aug. 1. After Aug. 1, if the veteran player is not signed to a contract by the team, the veteran shall be deemed a restricted free agent and shall be entitled to seek and secure offers of employment from other ECHL teams. Restricted free agents may not be traded. When a restricted free agent receives a contract offer from a team other than the team with the player’s rights and the restricted free agent wishes to accept the contract offer, the restricted free agent and the offering member must, within 24 hours, notify the ECHL, the team with the player’s rights and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association. The member with the player’s rights shall have seven days after the date it is notified to exercise its right to match the contract offer.
If a restricted free agent is not signed to either an offer sheet or a contract by an ECHL team by August 31, the player shall be deemed an unrestricted free agent.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.

Vipers Add D-Man & Forward:
Last week the Vernon Vipers pulled off their first trade of the off season, aquiring 18 yr old defenceman, Luke Juha from the OJHL Burlington Cougars for future considerations. In 44 games with the Cougars last season, Juha collected (9-39-48). Not the biggest d-man but a good skater and a puck moving d-man something the Vipers need for this coming season after losing several key d-men from last years team. (Malcolm Lyles, Steve Weinstein & Adam Thompson). Juha who has two years of Junior A experience as well as playing for Team Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge last season sounds like a good defenceman. The big question is, I have seen alot of kids come here from Ontario and supose to be a big impact player or all-star player from other Jr A leagues in Ontario and were nothing more then just a kid who ended up getting traded or released early into the season. For example, look at Elliott Richardson last season. Vernon picked him up in a trade and alot of hype over the former Vipers d-man that didnt really show Viper fans much of anything and before Christmas was delt to the Quesnel Millionaires, before getting shipped to the Wellington Dukes. Let's hope Juha is a solid d-man and can bring some experience and help to the Vipers backend that will some work. Welcome to Vernon Luke, and all the best with the Vipers this coming season.
In the same week the Vipers then got a committment from 17 yr old forward, Adam Tambellini for the 2011-12 season. Tambellini who collected (29-25-54) in just 34 games last season looks to be a goal scorer, something the Vipers were missing last year. Let's see how well he will do in his first year of Juniors. By the sounds of things Adam may be a kid the Vipers can count on for some big goals this season. The Vipers are losing alot of their scoring-leaders from last years club (David Robinson, Bryce Kakoske & Dylan Walchuk) so Tambellini may be leaned on to chip in the goal department in just his rookie season. Coming from a hockey family, you know Adam has all the knowlege about the game of hockey. Welcome to Vernon Adam and all the best this coming season with the Vipers.

Former Viper Kyle Bigos An Honourary Canadian:
Former Vernon Vipers defenceman, Kyle Bigos is in Sherwood Park, AB this week-weekend at the Edmonton Oilers 2011 Development Camp. Bigos was drafted 99th overall by the Oilers in the 4th round of the 2009 NHL Draft. Bigos played two seasons in Vernon (2007-2009).

He may not have been born in Canada, but having spent a number of his formative years north of the 49th, Kyle Bigos is happy to be back north of the border.

• More from Dev Camp
"Glad to be back in Edmonton," said Bigos following the second day of Oilers Development Camp in Sherwood Park.
"I really like it. Nice, big city. It's clean. It's just so good to get back to Canada. I was living here from age 15 to 20."
The 22-year-old Bigos has toured Western Canada since coming to Saskatchewan at age 15 to take part in the famed Notre Dame Hounds hockey program. He was hoping to make an appearance at last year's Development Camp but passport issues kept him down south.
"I miss Tim Horton's and TSN. Sportscenter down there is not the same."
As an avid fan of the game of hockey, growing up in Upland, California (about 30 miles north of Anaheim) wasn't the easiest thing for his development as a hockey player given the lack of top-level competition in the area.
"It was pretty hard when I was younger, with how much it cost. $4,000, $5,000 -- upwards of that -- to play anywhere really competitive. You have to fly to a lot of tournaments. It's money we didn't have so I took it easy for a little bit (in terms of) playing for the good teams."
In attempting to make up for the lack of competition during the hockey season, Bigos skated with the top players during the summer. In his Bantam year, however, he caught a break.
"The Junior Ducks gave me a scholarship to play at a competitive level. That's when I was 14, which was really nice."
Playing with the Junior Ducks for a year, he caught the eye of scouts for the Notre Dame Hounds program in Saskatchewan and his career really took off from there.
"At 15, the opportunity presented itself to move out to Notre Dame in Saskatchewan and play there. I was playing Midget in Notre Dame and was scouted by Vernon. I looked at their program and went to their spring camp and absolutely loved it there. My best friend, Braden Pimm, he was going there. He had more experience since he went to the camp the year before."
Bigos had two solid seasons in Vernon, putting up 17 points and 152 penalty minutes in 58 games in 2007-08 and 33 points plus 126 PIM in 58 games in 2008-09. His high level of play got him drafted by the Oilers in the fourth round in 2009 and awarded him a scholarship to Merrimack -- located 30 miles north of Boston.
"I think they've been a really big step in my development," Bigos said of Merrimack. "Two of the three coaches there are defencemen who played at a high level. I pick their brain, get knowledge from them. They really work with you on a one-on-one basis which is really nice."
Playing in the same conference as hockey powers such as Boston College and Boston University among others, Bigos has been able to hone his craft quite well.
"The league is really competitive, it's filled with a lot of fast players. I think it's been really good for me."
Bigos put up totals of 11 and eight points respectively each of the last two seasons with Merrimack. However, he did see his penalty-minute total increase to 127 in 2010-11 from 94 in 2009-10. He enters his Junior year this fall.
"Right now it's a year-by-year basis," he said of turning pro. "I'm going back for my third year, kind of itching to leave but at the same time no rushing the development process."
But for now, Bigos is just glad to be in Edmonton with a chance to meet some of his future teammates and also catch up with some old friends.
"It's always a blast. Seeing all the old guys again, catching up. It's like a real family-oriented organization here," he said. "It makes it a lot easier to come to the locker room. It's where you want to be."
Among the players he was previously familiar with attending this camp are Kellen and Connor Jones from his time in Vernon, Colten Teubert and fellow Hockey-East member Tanner House.
"It's good to know a lot of people here, makes it a lot easier."
His last name is fitting for a player who stands at 6'5".
"Yeah, he's a 'big' guy," Oilers Development Coach Mike Sillinger chuckled when asked to speak about the blueliner.
Bigos concurred.
"I'm a pretty big guy. 6'5" 235 so I like to use that size and strength. I like to pride myself on not losing battles in the corners or in front of the net. I like to hit. Mainly just more of a stay-at-home defenceman. I like to get involved in the offence but I've got to pick and choose my times to use my shot."
With a couple of more months to go, Bigos knows he has a lot of work ahead of him as he aims to reach his off-season goals in an attempt for a solid Junior season in Merrimack.
"Next year going to college again, I think I've really been working more on my fitness than anything. Trying to get as strong as I can, as lean as I can. I need to get on the ice as much as I can to work on footwork, I really need to work on footwork."
So far, he's noticed a difference as his training program has really been ramped up.
"I think it's been paying off. I was at school for the summer semesters training with all the pros that live in the area. It's been really good to work on your skills, try to be the best player in the league rather than just try to improve yourself.
"I could really see the skill level there. I saw I needed to pick my game up and be more of a contributing player."
Sillinger has had his eye on Bigos for the past few seasons and agrees with what the big blueliner says regarding the elements of his game he needs to work on.
"His big thing is mobility. He's got to work on his mobility and his puck skills a bit," Sillinger began. "Watched him play a few times the last couple of years. He's a big guy, hits hard. We need to get him to put fear in the opposition.
"He's kind of a big teddy bear right now and I think he's starting to see realize how tough it is and how he's going to have to play."

He may not have been born in Canada, but having spent a number of his formative years north of the 49th, Kyle Bigos is happy to be back north of the border.

Viper Grads Back In Oiler Camp:

Viper grads back in Oiler camp

Twins Connor and Kellen Jones are trying to hold court with some of the best forward prospects in the NHL. Defenceman Kyle Bigos’ job is to shut them all down.
Neither is an easy assignment, but the three Vernon Viper alumni wouldn’t trade this thrill ride for box seats at the Stanley Cup finals. , which ends Saturday with a mini 3-on-3 tournament.
“Last year was pretty exciting, just with Kellen getting drafted (seventh round, 202nd overall) and being out there with (Taylor) Hall and (Jordan) Eberle and those types of players.
“I think we’re still in disbelief that we’re here, but this year we’re trying to make an impact and be some of the best players out there,” said Connor, a Montrose, B.C. native.
The camp mainly comprises the Oilers’ younger prospects from the junior, college and AHL level, the top name being Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, selected first overall by the Oilers in last month’s NHL Entry Draft.
“He’s pretty down-to-earth; he doesn’t act like a No. 1 pick. He’s just happy to be here,” said Connor, of RNH’s grounded demeanour.
Added Kellen: “Everything is top of the line. They treat you like you’re a pro already; that’s a great part of it.
“Everyone has the same feeling – thrilled to have this chance and we want to make the most of this opportunity. We just want to make sure we’re developing. We both know what it takes and we just work as hard as we can.”
For Bigos, a fourth-round draft selection (99th overall in 2009), the journey to becoming an elite prospect hasn’t been without its challenges. He has basically lived away from his home in Upland, Calif. since he was 15, heading to the Notre Dame Hounds program in Wilcox, Sask. before coming to the Vipers.
He also lost his father, Walter Bigos, a former draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, last month to a heart attack.
“I went through some hard times, but it’s worth it. I thank my family so much for helping me make that sacrifice,” said Bigos, a fan favourite during his time in Vernon.
The 22-year-old blueliner added it has been great reconnecting with the twins in Edmonton.
“I miss them so much. It’s really a joy to be around them. We had a skills contest (Wednesday) and they blew by some guys, which was good to see,” said Bigos, who got his first introduction to yoga this week at Oiler camp.
“I felt tons better after that. I’m definitely going to continue that at home.”
A gentle giant until he steps on the ice, Bigos helped the NCAA Division 1 Merrimack Warriors to an impressive 16-8-3 record (25-10-4 overall) in his sophomore year, good enough for fourth in the Hockey East conference.
He skated alongside former Viper Mike Collins, who Bigos says is starting to get a handle on NCAA hockey. Collins finished as Merrimack’s top freshman with 14-16-30 in 36 games.
“He had a bit of a slow start, but the second half he just exploded onto the scene. It was just awesome watching him,” smile Bigos, who collected 2-6-8 and 45 penalty minutes in 32 games, and was one of 10 Warriors named to the Hockey East All-Academic team.
After helping the Vipers win back-to-back Royal Bank Cup titles, the twins were brought back to earth somewhat in their freshman season with the Division Quinnipiac Bobcats, who went 6-9-7 in ECAC conference play (16-15-8 overall).
“It was an eye-opener after being in Vernon for a while. It was a little frustrating to be at the lower part of the league. We don’t want to get used to losing, so next year we’re looking to change and turn things around,” said Connor, who finished second in team scoring (9-15-24) behind captain and former Viper Scott Zurevinski.
Kellen, who ranked fourth with 8-14-22, credits Zurevinski for making their adjustment to college hockey a good one.
“He’s just awesome. He’s great to everyone, no matter who you are. He’ll also tell you how it is. If you’re not doing well, he’ll tell you,” said Kellen.

Noonan 28th Vernon Junior Hockey Player To Get Drafted:
I'd first off like to take the time to personally congratulate former Vernon Vipers defenceman, Garrett Noonan on getting drafted two weekends ago by the NHL Nashville Predators. Noonan was drafted in the 4th round 21st pick (112 overall). Great news when any BCHLer gets drafted into the NHL. Garrett has come a long way from his rookie season with the Vipers two seasons ago. Congrats as well to the other seven former and current BCHLers (Joel Lowry, Josh Manson, Mike Reilly, Laurent Brossoit, Nathan Lieuwen and Dennis Robertson) who also were drafted. Best of luck!

Mark Ferner Introduced as Head Coach
Mark Ferner was introduced as Head Coach of the Everett Silvertips at a press conference inside the Edward J. Hansen Convention Center Wednesday afternoon.
Ferner, 45, joins the Silvertips after four years with the Vernon Vipers, whom he led to three consecutive Fred Page Cups as BCHL champions. Under his guidance, the Vipers posted a record of 165-51-24, winning the Royal Bank Cup as Canadian Jr. A Champions in 2009 and 2010, and finishing as runners up in 2011. During his tenure, Vernon participated in 98 post-season games, which includes Mowat Cup, Doyle Cup, and Royal Bank Cup contests. The Vipers were 16-2 in Royal Bank Cup games under Ferner.
“It’s a true honor to be named Head Coach of the Everett Silvertips,” Ferner said. “I’ve been a fan of this organization since they came into the league with Doug at the helm. This is a successful team with stable ownership and fans who are second to none, as we all know.”
Ferner is a veteran of 16 years of professional hockey, including parts of six seasons in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Detroit Red Wings. He was originally drafted by Buffalo in the 10th round of the 1983 NHL Draft after playing three seasons in the WHL with the Kamloops Jr. Oilers and Blazers. He was a member of the Blazers coaching staff from 2002-06, which included a year and a half as Head Coach.
He replaces Craig Hartsburg, who stepped down from Everett in June to become the Associate Coach with the NHL’s Calgary Flames after posting a record of 74-54-16 in two seasons.
“We’re very happy to have Mark join our organization as Head Coach,” Silvertips Vice President / General Manager Doug Soetaert said. “He brings with him impressive credentials of winning hockey games and developing players, and we all look forward to working with him in the upcoming year.”
The Silvertips will face off against the Kelowna Rockets in the ninth home opener in club history at 7:05 pm on Saturday, September 24th at Comcast Arena. For the complete 2011-12 schedule, please visit http://www.everettsilvertips.com/.

New Head Coach For Vipers After Ferner Departs:

New head coach for Vipers after Ferner departs
By Graeme Corbett - Vernon Morning Star
Published: July 06, 2011
Mark Ferner has spent the last four years preparing junior hockey talent for the next level.
As head coach and general manager of the Vernon Vipers, Ferner piloted the Snakes to two straight Royal Bank Cup national junior A championships in 2009 and 2010, plus a runner-up showing at this year’s tournament. The Regina native also helped dozens of Viper grads secure NCAA Division 1 scholarships and given them the tools to compete at the collegiate level.
Now, Ferner himself is moving on to the next level, as he accepted the head coach position with the Western Hockey League Everett Silvertips for the coming season.
It will be the 45-year-old’s second stint coaching in the Dub. He spent three seasons as an assistant with the WHL Kamloops Blazers, starting in the 2002-03 season, taking over as head coach for a year in 2005-06.
Ferner’s ultimate goal is to coach in the pro ranks, and this was a step he felt he needed to take to achieve that.
“This has nothing to do with me wanting to get back to the Western Hockey League, this is a career move,” said Ferner.
“Financially, it makes a lot of sense for my family, and as far as my career is concerned, if I wanted the opportunity at some point to coach pro then I needed to make a step.”
In four seasons with the Vipers, Ferner amassed an impressive 165-51-7-17 record, and after so much success, there wasn’t much left to prove.
“Could I have come back and won the (Royal Bank) Cup again? Yeah, and then what?” he shrugged.
“We love Vernon – the people, the fans, the media, the kids. It was the best four years of coaching for me. Sooner or later, like our kids (Vipers), you’ve got to move on.”
Vipers’ owner Duncan Wray didn’t have to look far to find Ferner’s replacement.
After discussing his resignation Monday morning, Wray walked across the office and informed assistant coach Jason Williamson of his promotion.
“We knew something was going to happen here sooner or later, but it’s always a shock when it does,” said Williamson, who agreed to a three-year head coach/GM contract Tuesday.
“It’s a great opportunity to coach one of the premier franchises in all of junior hockey.
“I’ve been here four years as a coach and three (1999-2002) as a player, and expectations are high here. I’ve seen both sides of the coin. We look forward to continuing on with the strong tradition that we already have.”
Said Wray: “It really was a no-brainer. I think Willy knew deep down that was my goal that if he was here when Mark left that he would get the job.”
Regarding Ferner, he added: “It was a tough moment for both of us because we have a great relationship. I know he wanted to stay but the opportunity was just too good to move on.
“Every player that played for him respected him. I know he’ll be successful wherever he goes.
“I told him when he gets to the NHL, I expect tickets waiting for me when I get into town.”

Williamson The Main Man In Vernon Now:
Williamson the main man in Vernon now
Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - Submitted by BCHL Media
The British Columbia Hockey League announced Wednesday that the Vernon Vipers have hired Jason Williamson as their new head coach after Mark Ferner accepted a job with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League
Williamson, 30, has been Ferner’s assistant the last four years and has been instrumental in the Vipers’ RBC Cup national championships in 2009 and 2010. He’s handled the bulk of the team’s recruiting since joining the club and in May, Williamson helped guide Vernon back to the title game. The 150 Mile House, B.C. native played for the Vipers from 1999 to 2002 before going to Niagara University.
“It was an easy decision to hire Jason,” said Vipers owner Duncan Wray. “He’s been a big part of our team, the players know him, he knows them and he knows our recruits; it will be business as usual and we expect no hiccups. Jason is respected through the hockey world for his contribution to our success since he’s been with us.”
In going to Everett, Ferner returns to his WHL coaching roots. He was with the Kamloops Blazers as an assistant for three seasons before taking their head coaching position in the 2005-06 campaign.
“At this level, our job is to promote our coaching staff as well as our players so we encourage Mark in moving on as it will further his career,” said Wray. “I’m pleased for Mark; I think he’ll do a great job and I wish him the best.”
A Regina native, Ferner accumulated at 165-51-7-17 BCHL record and was named Interior Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
“We are excited for Mark to get this opportunity at the major junior level,” said BCHL commissioner John Grisdale. “Mark’s patience and hockey background make him an outstanding teacher and leader. Everett has made an excellent decision in hiring him.”
Ferner was a defenceman in his playing career and was drafted in 1983 by the Buffalo Sabres from the Kamloops Junior Oilers/Blazers franchise where he played three seasons. He went on to play 91 games in the NHL with Buffalo, Washington, Detroit and Anaheim.

David Robinson #1 In Your Heart, #10 In Your Program:
Congrats goes out to former Vernon Vipers captain, David Robinson on being named the North Okanagan Male Athelete of the year as well on his commitment to the University of Calgary for this coming hockey season.
Robinson who played Mr.clutch this past season scoring some huge goals or big time game winners for the Vipers, will be truly missed this coming season. Dave played with his heart on his sleve and knew what it was to be a Vernon Viper and provide his leadership to the younger kids coming into Vernon. One of the true classy players in Viper history his leadership on and off the ice will be missed. Robinson was great with the fans and a true friend and team mate in the dressing room. Over the past two years Robinson was one of the hardest working kids on the team, played each shift like it was his last and never quit. A true competator that always battled and and was a warrior come playoffs. Robinson in his final year with the Vipers carried a very young, inexperienced Vipers team to the RBC Cup finals but fell short falling 2-0 to the RBC Cup Champion Pembroke LumberKings as Robinson and the Vipers fell short of becoming the first Junior hockey team in history to win three straight National Titles. Thanks for some great memories Dave! I wish you all the best with the Dinos & whatever comes along in your future!
With David Robinson now gone, the question is, who will be the Vipers captain for this season? Patrick McGillis who was a captain before coming to Vernon would be my guess. McGillis now entering his third season with the Vipers is the only remaining player left from the 2009-2010 RBC Cup winning team and brings that leadership role. McGillis I think is a great leader and knows what it takes to be a Viper and what it takes to win in this league. McGillis is another player that plays hard, battles and gives it his all. I guess will have to wait and see what happens over the summer. Who ever the new captain will be, they will have some pretty big skates to fill after David Robinson.

Walchuk Listed On Chiefs Prospects List:
One of the WHL blogs (small thoughts at large) has posted every WHL team's 2011-12 prospects list. This only include players who were not WHL regulars last year. If a kid played more than 20-30 games or so in the WHL last year, he's not on these lists.
The WHL Spokane Chiefs have former Vernon Vipers forward, Dylan Walchuk as one of thirty six players listed on their 2011-12 prospects list. Walchuk is listed as a aquired listed player of the Chiefs, played in his second season with the Vipers this past year. In 55 regular season games Walchuk collected (24-32-56) while picking up (10-5-15) in 16 playoff games with Vernon. Walchuk will be attending Northern Michigan this coming season.

If a restricted free agent is not signed to either an offer sheet or a contract by an ECHL team by Aug. 31, the player shall be deemed an unrestricted free agent.

Vipers Add Elite Prospects:

Vipers add elite prospects

The hockey pedigree is undeniable, but Adam Tambellini isn’t about to ride the coattails of his family name.
The son of Edmonton Oilers’ general manager Steve Tambellini, and younger brother of Vancouver Canucks’ forward Jeff, Adam is intent on forging his own identity as he pursues his dream of becoming a pro.
“It’s kind of good to have sometimes, but I don’t like to use it to my advantage. I’m just like any other player in the league,” shrugged the 1994-born centre.
Tambellini has already shown he can handle himself in big-pressure situations. He recorded a hat trick to help the Edmonton SSAC Athletics ground the Saskatoon Contacts 3-2 in the gold-medal game of the Mac’s Midget AAA Tournament in January. He finished the tourney with 4+5 in seven games.
“I don’t think you can ask for any better situation than that. In the Mac’s tournament, that was probably the best game of my life and I’m glad I got to do it on that stage,” said Tambellini.
The Vernon Vipers are hoping the 6-foot-1 centre (he is already two inches taller than Jeff) will bring some of that scoring savvy when he joins the organization for the coming season.
“He wants to make his own name for himself. He played for a pretty good team, but he was instrumental in their success,” said Vipers’ assistant coach Jason Williamson.
Tambellini, a cousin of fellow Viper Aaron Hadley, compiled 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points in 34 games with the Athletics, and was a constant threat on their powerplay.
Listed by the WHL Portland Winterhawks and sought after by several other junior clubs (Steve is close friends with Harvey Smyl of the Chilliwack Chiefs), Tambellini opted to follow the scholarship route.
“I saw what my brother did in going to Michigan (NCAA Division 1 Wolverines) and it seemed to work out pretty good. He’s been playing in the NHL for six years now so I thought that was a pretty good road for me.”
Incidentally, Jeff, playing with the Chiefs, and Williamson, as captain of the Vipers, battled one another in the 2001-02 Fred Page Cup finals. Chilliwack won the best-of-seven series and advanced to the Royal Bank Cup.
More recently, Tambellini watched Jeff play for another cup... as in the Stanley Cup.
“It was pretty surreal to watch (Canucks vs Bruins). We got to go down for Games 5 and 7. Game 7 was quite the experience. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” said Tambellini, who has always received pragmatic hockey advice from his big brother.
“All the time he was developing, he was telling me to just get out there and play the game and don’t worry about anything else.”
Tambellini, whose family owns a home on Christina Lake, will work out this summer in Castlegar at The Factory, a hockey training centre owned in part by Jeff. It operates five days a week out of Selkirk College.
Meanwhile, the Vipers announced another move earlier this week to strengthen their blueline.
With the departure of three key veteran d-men – Adam Thompson, Stevie Weinstein and Malcolm Lyles – the Royal Bank Cup finalists acquired 18-year old Luke Juha from the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in exchange for future considerations.
The Mississauga native posted 9-39-48 in 44 games and helped the Cougars win the OJHL regular-season title with 39 wins for 81 points.
Juha (pronounced Yu-ha), a puck-moving defenceman and powerplay quarterback, was a member of the silver-medalist Team Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge in Penticton.
Apparently he liked what he saw during his short trip to the Okanagan.
“I’m totally looking forward to it. I’ve only heard good things about the coaches in Vernon and their record speaks for itself. I’ve heard it’s a great league and I just want to contribute with the Vipers,” said the well-spoken defender.
Juha is one of the first players to commit to the newly-accepted NCAA Division I Penn State Nittany Lions Icers in University Park, Pa. With former Princeton Tiger head coach Guy Gadowski assuming bench boss duties with the Icers, Juha was eager to jump on board.
Gadowsky, an Edmonton native, spent seven years leading the Tigers’ NCAA resurgence, including championship berths in 2008 and ‘09.
“He’s only 18, but he’s got some good experience, a higher-end guy who was able to play for Canada East,” said Williamson.
While his offensive credentials are evident, Juha says he has worked hard to bring his play in the defensive zone up to scratch.
“That’s something a lot of people don’t see in my game. I’m a smaller guy (5-foot-11, 180 pounds), but my defensive game has really improved over the last two seasons,” said Juha, who tries to model his game after L.A. Kings’ d-man Drew Doughty.
