I had to work today so I missed the Silverbacks/Vipers game this afternoon and had to watch it online after work this evening.
A fairly entertaining 1st period that went back and fourth. I thought the Silverbacks had a slight edge in play at times and a few more quality chances. The Snakes gave up the games first goal for a sixth time this season.
The Vipers fell behind 3-1 but rallied to tie the game before the end of the middle frame. I thought Vernon was the better team in the second half, had lots of pressure and created/generated some good chances in and around the net.
The Vipers would grab their first lead of the afternoon and then take a 5-3 lead halfway through the final frame. The Backs rallied with a strong second half, outplaying Vernon in the final half of the 3rd forcing overtime on Hunter Sansbury's game tying goal at 19:40
The S'Backs had a great chance early into overtime before the Snakes took over the edge in play and carried most of overtime but no real zone time or opportunities. Both teams exchanged several odd man rushes before Zack Tonelli with his first goal of the Pod season at 3:51 gives Vernon the 6-5 overtime victory.
After losing their past three games and not looking very good or playing very well in two of those three games, I thought the Vipers looked good this afternoon and played well. Vernon fell behind 3-1 but rallied with five unanswered goals before blowing a two goal lead in the 3rd before winning in overtime. The Vipers have to be happy with rallying from a 3-1 deficit but won't be happy blowing a two goal lead in the 3rd. Both teams didn't play a full sixty minutes but both teams played hard. Some very good opportunities at both ends of the rink. I thought this was a very good and exciting hockey game.
JoJo Tanaka-Campbell, Zack Tonelli & James Porter Jr looked good and played well for the Vernon Vipers.
After losing their first three games of the 2021 Pod season, the Silverbacks had won three straight before today's game vs the Vipers. Watching Salmon Arm play Vernon the past two games, I noticed this team has improved and playing much better as a unit and overall compared to the teams first meeting of the Pod season. SA has some speedy wingers and skilled forwards with solid goaltending. I thought the Apes played well this afternoon. Salmon Arm won't be happy after blowing a 3-1 2nd period lead but will be happy with the 3rd period comeback to force overtime. Vernon & Salmon Arm have gone to overtime three straight games with the Vipers winning two. I thought both goaltenders played well.
Kieran Ruscheinski, Hunter Sansbury, Danny Ciccarello, Simon Tassy, Daniel Panetta & Owen Say looked good and played well for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
Due to the new rules and COVID-19 you don't get those same battles and wars along the boards or in front of the net. You don't see that "Hate" boil over into the next game like you would if these were the playoffs. Very little physical play during these games.
I can't get over all these afternoon games. If they expect fans to watch or listen to the games and follow the Vipers, how do they expect them to do that playing during the day when most people are working or outside with this nice weather? Poor scheduling on someone's part. Why couldn't they have played these games at night?
These two teams will meet again Saturday night.
Why couldn't they have played these games at night? Maybe because the rink is booked in those evenings. Or the rink isn't booked in the evening and the rental rate is dependent on the city being able to staff the rink for the game as part of the day shift. Holding the game at night, long after the end of the day shift, might involve having to pay a lot more in overtime.
Maybe it is so the Scouts can watch an afternoon game and then an evening game, thus more opportunity to see more players.
