I was at a friends going away party/bbq tonight so I didn't get a chance to watch the Vipers game online. On my way home I did manage to catch the game on the radio and listen to the final ten minutes of the hockey game. It was 3-2 for Trail and sounded like the Vipers had numerous opportunities to tie the game but couldn't bury there chances. A turnover late in the period allowed Trail to grab a 4-2 lead before adding an empty netter. A tough loss vs a Trail team the Snakes are chasing in the standings. Tonight was a big game for both teams, as the Smoke Eaters now move eight points ahead of Vernon in the Interior division.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Trail. You have to wonder if James Porter Jr will get the start in goal, after Reilly Herbst has played in eleven of Vernon's last twelve games.

Go Vipers Go!

After the Buzzer – Vipers Fall To Smoke Eaters

November 9, 2019

Trail, BC: Cam MacDonald scored his 6th of the season and the Vipers out shot the Smoke Eaters, but it wasn’t enough as Trail defeated Vernon 5-2 at the Trail Memorial Centre.

The Smoke Eaters struck early in the game as Owen Ozar snapped home his 11th of the season. Midway through the period, the Vipers equalized on the powerplay as Trey Taylors point shot found its way in making it 1-1. Just over two minutes later Cam MacDonald would give his team a 2-1 lead after Connor Marritt found him in the left circle. Trail tied it up shortly after as a mad scramble in front was finished off by Kent Johnson. The Vipers outshot and outchanced the Smokies in the first period, but it was tied at 2 after 2.

More penalties, but tighter checking hockey followed in the second period. The Vipers penalty kill was solid limiting the three Trail chances. The Vipers had their own chances, but couldn’t solve Paler-Chow. The only goal of the period came to the Smoke Eaters as Kent Johnson struck again, banking in a puck at the side of the net to make it 3-2 after 2.

In the third, the Vipers pushed but hit a goal post and had some good looks on some scrambles in front, but puck luck wasn’t on their side. Walker Erickson increased the Smoke Eater lead to 4-2. Despite another late flurry from the Vipers, the Smoke Eaters would hit the the empty net to make it 5-2.

The Vipers will look to draw even this weekend when they return to the Trail Memorial Centre for a 7pm puck drop at 7pm.

RECAP: Smoke Eaters surge past the Vipers with a 5-2 win

November 9, 2019

The Smoke Eaters get goals from Johnson, Ozar, Colella and Erickson as they work their way past the Vipers for a 5-2 on home ice on Friday night.

It took Owen Ozar just 16 seconds to light the lamp behind Rielly Herbst as he picked the short side, top corner, to make it 1-0. The Vipers would bounce back from the early set back and ultimately take a 2-1 lead as Trey Taylor would score on the power play for the Vipers as a shot from the point snuck through the crowd and beat Matteo Paler-Chow. The Vipers scored again just a few minutes later after a turn over in the Smoke Eaters zone, Cameron MacDonald would take a cross crease pass to beat Paler-Chow on the blocker side. The Vipers lead was short lived as Colella, Clifton and Johnson would combine just 25 seconds later, tying the game at two courtesy of Johnson’s league leading 18th goal.

In the second a consistent run to the penalty box slowed the moment of the game but that didn’t stop Kent Johnson from grabbing his second. Johnson scored from the goal-line as he beat Herbst cheating to make it 3-2, a goal that would stand as the eventual game winner.

In the third Walker Erickson would get the insurance marker by never giving up on the puck and out working the opposition, as he was rewarded with his third of the year to all but wrap the game up.

Mike Colella would kill any chance of a late comeback with a strong effort of his own. He blocked the shot attempt by the Vipers defenceman, took the puck and raced the other way with two Vernon players on his tail, and out the puck into the empty net making it 5-2.

The Smoke Eaters will look to take all four points Saturday night as the Vipers return to Cominco for a 7pm puck drop.
