McPhee spent parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Tri-City Americans, Everett Silvertips and Kootenay Ice before committing to the University of Regina. McPhee spent the past five seasons (2014-2019) playing with the University of Regina Cougars.

McPhee started the 2010-11 season with the Western Hockey League Tri-City Americans. The Americans assigned McPhee to the Vipers November 18th 2010. McPhee played parts of one season in Vernon (2010-11) before leaving the Vipers for the Western Hockey League Everett Silvertips. In 24 games with the Vipers McPhee collected (3-goals-1-assist-4-points). The Vipers traded McPhee and future considerations to the Victoria Grizzlies December 12th 2011 for Sean Robertson.

May 13 2019 F Zach McPhee (Tri-City, Everett, Kootenay, 2010-14) has signed a one-year contract with Trollhättan (Sweden, Division 2). This season, with U of Regina (USports, Canada West), he had four goals and three assists in 27 games.
