The man is dedicated to his team. Penticton Vees president, general manager and head coach Fred Harbinson is locking himself inside the Peach on Okanagan Beach Tuesday. Vees players along with staff and mascot HarVee will be on hand all afternoon long at the event beginning at 12 p.m. Harbinson will remain “Peach-tained” inside the ice cream shop until the goal is reached. Fans are invited to come down and meet the team and join the drive to help coach Harbinson escape.
Centennials Main Camp Report:
The Centennials opened main camp on Monday morning with a number of new faces vying for a spot on the team. The search for the 2019-20 roster has attracted players from as near as the Cents home town and surrounding area to as far as Eastern Canada. The Cents are taking the first two days to have a thorough look at the invitees, of which their are over 80 including goalies. The returning Centennials and Junior ‘A’ veterans will take part in some goalie sessions, but won’t officially get going until Wednesday morning after the first releases. Among the attendees are a few Merritt locals. Goaltender Colton Macaulay (01) will be among the many goalies trying to making an impression on Head Coach Barry Wolff along with former AP Jakob Gullmes (02), who spent time with the 100 Mile Wranglers. Forward Cody Dick (02) has some ties to Merritt as well as Atrayu Jonny (02) and Chase Cooke (03) who will be attending their second straight main camp for the Cents. Some names that are familiar to Cents fans are defenseman Ross Roloson (03), younger brother of Brett, and son of former NHL goaltender Dwayne Roloson. Garrett Wicks (01), younger brother of Centennials Captain for 2018-19 Nick Wicks will be looking to carve out a spot among the forwards. Kaden Zakall (03), cousin of hometown hero Talon will also be trying to impress the Cents brass in the two day audition segment of camp. Head Coach and General Manager Barry Wolff says that he’s looking for compete and whatever a player does best. “We’re looking for players to fill holes throughout the line-up, and it starts with the work ethic and the compete. We want to see everyone playing to their strengths and what makes them great hockey players because we will need all types of players to make a complete team.”
Next Generation: Prince George Spruce Kings
All summer we’ll be going team-by-team to profile new players coming in for the 2019-20 season with recaps of offseason commits and acquisitions. We will also have interviews and scouting reports from the coaches.
Next up is the Prince George Spruce Kings.
The Spruce Kings head into the 2019-20 season as the defending Fred Page Cup champions after a 16-1 postseason saw them capture their first-ever league title. They went on to defeat the top-ranked Brooks Bandits in six games to win the Doyle Cup and made it all the way the championship game of the National Junior A Championship. As is the case with most BCHL teams, there was plenty of turnover in the offseason as a big part of last year’s championship squad are moving on to play college hockey in the upcoming season. There was also another big change in Prince George off the ice as head coach Adam Maglio accepted a job in the WHL and the team promoted former assistant Alex Evin to lead role behind the bench. Unlike most new head coaches in the league, Evin has an advantage having been a part of the Spruce Kings coaching staff for the past two seasons. “I’m excited,” said Evin. “I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with [general manager] Mike [Hawes] and Adam the last two years. We have a formula here that works. My plan is not to change a lot. I think that would be silly. I couldn’t have come into a better spot, knowing all our players. Our whole staff has worked together to recruit all these guys this year. We’re in a good spot going forward.”
Acquired via trade
Jett Alexander (1999, G)
- Hometown: Bloomfield, Ont.
- Previous team: North York Rangers (OJHL)
Alexander is coming off an incredible season with North York where he not only won the league’s Best Goaltender award, but also was named the OJHL’s Most Valuable Player. He posted an eye-popping .945 save percentage and a 1.67 goals-against average in the regular season and continue his strong play into the postseason where he had a .936 save percentage and a 2.24 goals-against.
Evin’s scouting report:
“We identified Jett as a very viable replacement for Logan [Neaton]. We wanted someone with some experience. Jett’s a big goalie and he moves well. He’s also a winner. If you look at his success over the last few years, he’s obviously put up good numbers and that’s no fluke. He’s someone who can hopefully be consistent for us. He’s a really good person and a really good kid. We’re excited to bring him on board and help him with the next step in his career.”
