TRADE ALERT! Vipers Acquire Sanderson From Okotoks
October 23, 2018
Vernon, BC: The Vernon Vipers are pleased to announce the acquisition of forward Ben Sanderson from the Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in exchange for defenseman Tylor Ludwar and future considerations.
The Calgary Alberta product tallied 20 goals in 50 games with the Oilers last season.
“We feel this is a good hockey trade for both teams,” says Mark Ferner, Head Coach and GM of the Vipers. “We had a needed a forward and they were in search of a defenseman.”
Sanderson comes in committed to Colorado College.
Ferner adds, “Tylor was good for us in the pair of games he was here. We just had an influx of defenseman and we wanted to make sure he went to a good program.”
Ben Sanderson is the son of former NHLer Geoff Sanderson. He will join his new team this week and is expected to make his Vipers debut this weekend against Powell River.

Yup... called this one earlier on this very blog ( 3rd comment on ‘previous blog “Chilliwack 3 Vernon 2” ). Vipers were not going to go for long with 9 D-men. They were going to trade a veteran, not rookies Taylor or Kim, for another forward. This appears as a very good pick-up, getting an 18 year old with decent size who has the ability to put points on the board. This may not be Ferner’s final roster but he has made very clever moves so far. Can’t wait to see Sanderson in the line-up. Well done Mark.
I like the sounds of this trade. I didn't expect the Vipers to trade Tylor Ludwar but I think getting a kid who can score some goals and add some offence to the Vipers lineup is key. The Vipers struggled offensively with Josh Prokop in the lineup and now that he's gone, they still need someone who can put the puck in the net and chip in with a point or two a game.
Sanderson has some good size but only one season of Junior hockey under his belt. It will be interesting to see what line he plays on and with who. Are the Vipers done dealing? Or will we see more trades soon?
