Vernon, BC; The Vernon Vipers are pleased to announce they have acquired Austin Chorney in a trade with the Langley Rivermen in exchange for Keyvan Mokhtari.
Austin Chorney has spent the last season and a half with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks posting 6 goals and 4 assists in 51 games played.
Head Coach and GM of the Vipers, Mark Ferner says, “It’s never easy to make trades and we were in a unique situation with seven 20 year olds and we knew something had to give.”
In acquiring Chorney, Ferner goes on to say, “He’s a player we’ve coveted since he was in Salmon Arm. He’s a big, strong and physical defender with some offensive upside.
The 6’1, 215 pound defenseman from Abbotsford will be entering his 3rd full season and has already secured a commitment to play NCAA hockey for Ohio State University.
Heading to Langley, from Vernon is 20 year old veteran Keyvan Mokhtari. The speedster from Burnaby had a great season for the Vipers last season tallying 14 goals and 16 assists in 52 games played.
“Its never easy to make trades and Keyvan was a soldier for us last season.” Ferner goes on to say, “We really wanted to find him a good spot to play and we wish him nothing but the best.”
The Vipers would like to wish Keyvan the best with Langley, and welcome Austin to the snake pit!

I was shocked to see Keyvan Mokhtari traded. The Vipers had to trade or release one 20 yr old after having seven, but I would have never guessed it would be Mokhtari. I really liked him last year. One of the fastest kids in the league, can really move the puck up ice in a hurry, dangerous on the powerplay and hard to contain-defend against. I thought Josh Latta would have been the odd man out. Im guessing Latta wasn't enough for Chorney. I wonder what the future considerations will be in this deal?
I liked what I saw in Austin Chorney last year with Salmon Arm. He's a big kid who plays physical, hard to beat one on one and gets pucks to the net. Will this be the last of the trading before the regular season for the Vipers?
The Vees have only three 20 yr olds heading into the regular season and a fairly young roster. Will Fred Harbinson try and work his magic and acquire Mokhtari from Langley? Harbinson and the Vees have done this a few times over the years, picking up a former Viper.
Trading Keyvan was the right move for several reasons:
* although he's very fast and shifty and is a dangerous penalty killer, Keyvan doesn't finish well
* he's a fine young man and a good teammate, but he's hard to play with because of his freewheeling style of play
* Josh Latta is a more physical player than Keyvan, who is tenacious but not strong on the puck
* because of his exciting style of play, Keyvan was always going to bring a better return than Josh, which is demonstrated by Mark Ferner's coup in getting Austin Chorney in the trade; Chorney is exactly what the Vipers needed, a big, mean D-man who can contribute offensively as well
* the Vipers needed a solid winger, especially a left winger, more than they needed a speedster center man and... the Vipers have four good center men
Chorney's arrival means that the Viper defense corps is set with five veteran D-men and a promising rookie, Brendan Kim. They should not only be solid defensively; we should see lots of offensive production from all six. As we saw last year, Michael Young, Mitch Andres, and Jack Judson can all score. Carver Watson had 8 goals and 17 assists with Chilliwack in '16/17; Austin Chorney had 6 goals for the Silverbacks last year and Brendan Kim had the second most points for the OHA prep team last year (38 pts in 36 games) What's more, Young, Andres, Chorney, and Kim can throw their weight around.
Playing in front of two elite goaltenders, the D group should once again contribute to Ferner's trademark defensive style. Who will fill the role of the 7th D-man is unknown. Two 2002-born players, Nick Ardanaz and Trey Taylor, have been the most impressive because of their positioning, vision, puckhandling, and poise, but they're rather young and small at this point. No other D-man has really stood out at camp.
