Two rinks are better than one when it comes to holding events.

Vernon’s Recreation Services Director Doug Ross, says there’s been interest in using Kal Tire Place and the soon-to-be ready Kal Tire Place North arena for events.

“We’ve had conversation with events that would be on ice, whether that be hockey or curling, and we’ve also had requests for dry floor events, like a trade show, that would use both facilities,” Ross tells Beach Radio News.

Ross says the events could include bigger minor hockey tournaments.

“That’s something we’ve talked to the (Coca Cola) Pee Wee Winter Carnival people about expanding. And that’s something they’ve been considering for a long time.”

That event has been held at the Civic Arena until now, but that building is due to be demolished over the next year.

Ross says the BC Hockey League’s Showcase is not possible for Vernon at this time.

“The Showcase is something we actually tried to go after, but Chilliwack signed a multi year extension, so unfortunately we won’t be able to go after that one, but things like that are definitely a possibility for the future.”

Ross says the new 13 million dollar, 400 seat arena is still on track to open September 7th when a community celebration along with a Loverboy concert will be held that weekend.
