Day 1 Report From Vipers Training Camp:

I have had season tickets for 29 years and been following junior hockey in Vernon for over 35 years. I have missed only three home games since the 1998-99 season. Here are my thought's from training camp.

I stopped by Kal Tire Place this evening to check in on Day 1 from Vipers training camp. Each game/scrimmage consisted of two twenty five minute periods with a full ice clean in between periods. A penalty was an automatic penalty shot.

Day 1 of training camp was mostly skills/drills and some practices with only one game-scrimmage this evening.

In the first and only game-scrimmage of the night saw Team Gold defeat Team White 5-1 in front of about 125 fans. Team Gold opened the scoring early also scored on two penalty shots was up 3-0 after twenty minutes/one period. Team Gold was the better of the two teams in the 1st period capitalized on their chances. Vipers defenceman Mitch Andres went down after taking a stick or puck to the face and left the ice/game. I didnt see him return. Both teams exchanged goals in the 2nd period with some chances at both ends. Team White struggled offensively, had troubles scoring, didn't create/generate a ton of offensive chances. Tonight's game/scrimmage wasn't overly exciting with not a lot of action.

Liam McGarva started in goal for Team Gold didn't allow a goal, while Johnny Derrick played the second half of the game-scrimmage, gave up just one goal. Aidan Porter started in goal for Team White gave up three goals, while Geo Wilson played the 2nd period, allowed one goal.

Here is a list of players I thought stood out/played well.

Team White:

Geo Wilson replaced Aiden Porter after the opening frame, had to be sharp made several key saves in the 2nd period keeping his team in the game. Was quick on his feet, played well.

Team Gold:

Brendan Kim Has some size and was physical on the backend through out tonight's scrimmage. One of the more physical kids tonight.

Teddy Wooding Stood out, caught my attention. Has some wheels, can move the puck and showed signs of skill. Was one of the more offensive players in tonight's game.

News & Notes:

The Wray family was in attendance tonight

Vipers captain Jagger Williamson was behind the bench, coaching Team Gold

Mark Ferner was behind the bench, coaching Team White

Vipers defenceman Mitch Andres's four younger brothers are attending training camp

Aidan Porter was wearing a brand new set of goaltender equipment all decked out in Vipers colors

I didn't see a lot of players stand out tonight. Viper veterans Keyvan Mohktari, Jack Judson & Josh Prokop had a few good shifts.

The Vipers have twelve players back from last year

The doors were open to Kal Tire Place North as some fans walked down the hallway into the new arena, before the doors were eventually locked

Lots of rumors going around the rink about the Vipers being for sale/or sold. I don't know what to believe anymore. This is getting ridiculous

Team Red will face Team White tomorrow at 10:30am and then take on Team Gold tomorrow evening at 5:30pm
