Former Viper Tambellini Leaves UND For Western Hockey League:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Adam Tambellini has left the University of North Dakota for the Western Hockey League.  Today the Portland Winterhawks traded Tambellini to the Calgary Hitmen. 

Tambellini was recruited by the Vipers. Started the 2011-12 season in Vernon before being traded to Surrey on the BCHL trade deadline in January 2013 along with future considerations (Michael Roberts) for Mason Blacklock & future considerations (Jordan Klimek and Demico Hannoun). In 52 games with the Vipers & Eagles last season Tambellini collected (36-30-65).  In 91 regular season games with the Vipers Tambellini collected (49-goals-46-assists-95-points).  Tambellini was drafted 64th overall in the 3rd Round by the New York Rangers at the 2013 NHL Draft.

The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club today announced that they have acquired 19-year-old forward Adam Tambellini from the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for a first round selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Tambellini is expected to join the Hitmen on their East Division road trip tonight in Saskatoon.

“We are very excited to add a top forward to our group,” said Hitmen General Manager and Vice President, Business Operations Mike Moore. “Adam possesses size, skating and a scoring touch that will add terrific depth to our lineup. It is not easy to give up a first round draft pick, however when you acquire a talent like Adam we felt the price was warranted.”

Tambellini, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, began the 2013-14 season with the University of North Dakota, recording four points (two goals, two assists) over 16 games as a freshman. The 6-3, 185-pound forward was selected by the New York Rangers in the third round, 65th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Tambellini played two seasons with South Surrey and Vernon of the BCHL (2011-13), where he recorded 63 goals and 58 assists for 121 points over 107 games played.

Hawks Trade Rights To Adam Tambellini to Calgary

The Portland Winterhawks have traded the rights to Adam Tambellini to the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for conditional draft picks.

Tambellini, who was on the team’s protected list, began the season with the University of North Dakota. In 16 games he had two goals and two assists for four points. Tambellini was a third round pick, 65th overall, by the New York Rangers in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Tambellini comments on joining the Hitmen squad

Adam Tambellini is entering a nearly identical situation as he was last season.

Then, he was a member of the Vernon Vipers and traded at the BCHL trade deadline to the Surrey Eagles, who were gearing up for a championship run. He won the BCHL title.

This year, the 19-year-old forward decided to leave the University of North Dakota Sioux after half a season, and is now a proud member of the Calgary Hitmen, and he's looking to do the same thing.

“It does feel like last year, joining a new team at the deadline,” said Tambellini, a few hours before he would make his Hitmen debut versus the Saskatoon Blades. “I was obviously lucky to go with Surrey all the way to the RBC Cup, which was a great experience for myself.

“Hopefully we can do the same thing with Calgary and try to get to the Memorial Cup.”

Tambellini was on the Portland Winterhawks protected list, but his rights were dealt to the Hitmen in exchange for a first round draft pick on Wednesday morning.

Over the holidays when Tambellini was debating his hockey future with his family, he liked the possibility of playing with the Hitmen because of the right level of comfortability with the organization.

“Things were moving a little slow (in North Dakota),” said the New York Rangers prospect. “We thought the right decision was to play more games, and the ability to come to an organization like Calgary is truly exciting.

“I kind of singled out Calgary as the one place I wanted to come to. With the level of comfortability and a really strong team, I thought I’d fit in well here and hopefully can get to the Memorial Cup with the Hitmen.”

He’s friends with a number of players on the squad, including Greg Chase who Tambellini considers a great friend.

While he’s never played competitive hockey with his Chase, Tambellini likes the possibility of teaming up with Calgary’s leading scorer.

“It’s up to the coaches to decide, but I think it would be no problem if him and I played on the same line,” Tambellini said.

“He’s a really great player with a heavy shot. If I ever get the chance to play with him, hopefully we can do good things.”

Name a Vernon Viper, and chances are Brett Mulcahy has played with them.

From skating last season with Mason Blacklock and Demico Hannoun on the Surrey Eagles, to Major Midget with Colton Sparrow on the Okanagan Rockets, to spring league with Ryan Renz, to minor hockey with T.J. Dumonceaux and Brendan Persley, he sees a lot of familiar faces on his new B.C. Hockey League club.

“I pretty much know the whole team,” said Mulcahy, who Vipers’ head coach/GM Jason Williamson acquired from the Eagles in a Monday trade.

“I know a few guys off every team because I’ve been around the league for a while, but I know seven or eight guys here pretty well.”

Williamson sent third-line forward Chase McMurphy and future considerations to Surrey in exchange for Mulcahy, captain and top goal-getter of the Eagles. Vernon also receives future considerations.

Mulcahy, a 20-year-old Kelowna product, racked up 23 goals and 12 assists with the Eagles, who he captained to an RBC Cup appearance last season. He is committed to the NCAA Holy Cross Crusaders of Massachusetts for next season.

“He’s a two-time captain and a guy that’s won before,” said Williamson. “That experience is valuable and he’s a good two-way hockey player.”

Mulcahy said last year’s RBC Cup run experience will come in handy when Vernon hosts the national Junior A tournament, May 10-18, at Kal Tire Place.

“It takes a lot for a team to win like we did last year, and there’s a few guys (Renz, Sparrow, Hannoun) in the room that can lean on that experience.

“A team has to be cohesive and work together and play within the systems. If everybody takes care of their role, the wins will come and the team will be successful.”

With one remaining player card and an available roster spot, Vernon Vipers’ head coach/GM Jason Williamson is working the phones this week to tweak his roster one last time before Friday’s BCHL trade deadline.

The extra roster spot opened up when d-man Mark Hamilton underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. With seven blueliners in the fold, Williamson is looking to add another forward.

Meanwhile, Michael Statchuk’s top-shelf rocket from the point midway through the second period stood as the winner as Vernon outlasted the visiting Nanaimo Clippers 3-2 Saturday night.

Statchuk was slightly more elated over his second snipe of the season, his first being an empty-netter.

“(Sparrow) made a perfect pass and just teed it up for me, and I just buried my head and was hoping it went in,” smiled the Wadena, Sask. product, who missed part of the third period after taking a high stick to the face.

Ex-Clipper Josh Bryan (4th goal), sneaking in from the point to bury a backdoor feed from first star Sparrow, opened Vernon’s account in front of 2,100 fans during a first-period powerplay.

In the second frame, Dexter Dancs circled into the slot from the sidewall, beating Tanner Kovacs with a wrister for the 2-0 goal.

“It’s just a couple of shifts we got outworked a little bit. Other than that, we played pretty well,” said Nanaimo head coach Mike Vandekamp.

The Clippers outshot the Vipers 40-27, but they didn’t generate many Grade A scoring chances.

“Early on, we weren’t penetrating or getting to the net enough,” said Vandekamp, who coached Williamson on the Vipers (2001-03).

Vernon native Colton Dahlen, a d-man with the Shipmen, agreed: “I thought we outplayed them most of the game. We were outshooting them, we just couldn’t bury our chances. That’s what hurt us.”

Dahlen, one of three 20-year-olds with Nanaimo, is enjoying his leadership role with the youthful Clippers.

“It’s just getting mentally stronger and being ready to play every single game,” he said. “There’s young guys who, in Midget, they can have a bad game and nobody would notice. In this league, you have to have a good game every single game, or you’re going to get taken advantage of.”

The Clippers (20-19-1-1) were finally rewarded in the third period with goals by Brendan Taylor (13th, shorthanded) and Bo Brauer (15th, powerplay).

Nanaimo pressed hard for the equalizer, pulling Kovacs (24 saves) for the extra attacker, but they couldn’t put anything else past third star Austin Smith, who finished with 38 saves.

Vernon, second in the Interior at 21-11-3-4, entertains the first-place Penticton Vees (25-9-2-3) Friday night. The Coquitlam Express (18-16-1-3) visit Vernon Saturday.

The Vees, 6-2 winners over the Merritt Centennials Sunday, also added firepower for the playoff run. On Saturday, they picked up sniper Nicolas Pierog from the Eagles in exchange for forward Anthony Conti and future considerations.

Penticton head coach/GM Fred Harbinson also plucked forward Erik Benoit from the WHL Moose Jaw Warriors.

Benoit, a veteran of 213 Dub games with four teams, has three assists in two games with Penticton.

“We definitely add experience with Pierog winning a championship and Benoit, who has been at two Memorial Cups winning a Western League championship as well,” said Harbinson. “Our fans have come out this year and supported us. We’re going to do everything possible to try to bring a championship here.”

Terriers Sign Former Viper Forward Hunt:

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Yorkton Terriers have signed former Vernon Vipers forward Riley Hunt.  

Hunt started his first full season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (2013-14) before being sent down to the KIJHL on December 2nd 2013 where he played with the Summerland Steam and was an "AP" with the SilverBacks.   In 18 games with Salmon Arm this season Hunt picked up just two assists.  In 12 games with the Steam Hunt collected (5-goals-8-assists-13-points).  Hunt was recruited by the Vipers and played his first full season in Vernon (2010-11) before being traded to Salmon Arm during his second season with the Vipers. Hunt was traded to the Silverbacks on September 25th 2012 for future considerations. In 53 games with the Vipers Hunt collected (1-goal-5-assists-6-points).

The Yorkton Terriers have signed 95 forward Riley Hunt previously playing with the Summerland Steam in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

Riley arrived in Yorkton this morning and participated in the Terriers practice. He is originally from Revelstoke, British Columbia. Riley is 5'7 tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has committed to Harvard University for the 2015-16 season.

Prior to playing for Summerland this season, Riley played as a 16 year old for the Vernon Vipers in the BCHL playing in 49 games and had 1 goal and 5 assists to go with 26 penalty minutes. Last season he was limited to 4 games for Vernon due injuries and was traded to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. This season, Riley started the year with Salmon Arm playing in 18 games collecting two assists before being released to Summerland. With Summerland he scored 5 goals and added 8 assists in 12 games.

The Yorkton Terriers are excited with the addition of Riley Hunt and would like to welcome him and his family to the Terriers organization. Riley will be in the lineup for Yorkton on Saturday when they visit the Battlefords North Stars.

Vipers Add Scoring & Toughness With Mulcahy & Chanter:

The Vipers pulled off two trades in less then four days aquiring Armstrong product Dylan Chanter and Kelowna native Brett Mulcahy. 

On Friday the Vipers traded veteran 20 yr old defenceman Jason Bird & future considerations to the Merritt Centennials for the CJHL playing rights of 18 yr old defenceman Dylan Chanter who had spent the first half of the season in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  I noticed today the Vipers have added Chanter to their roster wich means a deal between the Vipers & Saints must be finished.  Lets hope Chanter will be in the Vipers lineup this weekend.  Im not sure if I like this trade just yet.  I guess I will have to see Chanter play.  I do remember the name but dont really remember much about him.  If I can remember I think he is a good skating d-man with a rugged style of play.  I hope Chanter has fully recovered from his injury back in October.  I really liked Jason Bird, for a player the Vipers basically got for nothing at last years BCHL trade deadline Bird added that veteran presence on the backend (was an assistant captain this year) and was the Vipers quaterback on the powerplay (atleast I thought).  This kid has a wicked shot (onetimer) from the point and had his most offensive season this year in Vernon.  Bird has really come along since last season and was just starting getting involved with the play, getting the puck out of the zone and gaining a ton of confidence rushing up ice.  Jason Williamson said they wanted some more size-toughness on the backend and get that with Dylan Chanter.  Sure Birds defensive play needs a little work but is Chanter going to replace Birds 23 points on the blueline?  If I was going to trade a 20 yr old to make room for Brett Mulcahy I think I would have kept Bird and traded Colton Sparrow. 

On Monday the Vipers added 20 yr old veteran forward Brett Mulcahy & future considerations from the Surrey Eagles for 19 yr old forward Chase McMurphy and future considerations.  I really like this deal and I think most Viper fans saw McMurphy was the odd man out if another trade were to happen before the deadline.  McMurphy who has speed and put up good numbers in the AJHL the past few seasons was brought in to add some scoring-speed up front.  It took the Alberta native a few games to get going with his new team before playing well the next five or six games before slowly tailing off the last ten games or so.  McMurphy who has basically been invinsible latley cooled off with just the odd scoring chance now and again.  McMurphy never really exceeded his expectations playing on the 4th line.  I think McMurphy needed to be on one of the Vipers top two lines where he can use his speed and scoring ability with some higher cailibre players.  With the addition of Mulcahy the Vipers get a veteran 20 yr old former Eagles captain who has experienced a long playoff run-trip to the Royal Bank Cup (last year) and some added depth up front.  My guess is Mulcahy will be on one of the Vipers top two units.  Im guessing Colton Sparrow will move down to the 3rd or 4th line.  Maybe Mulcahy can add some spark and generate some chemistry with Mason Blacklock who hasnt been the same since his return from a long term injury.  Maybe the two former team mates can both help each other playing on the same line.  Mulcahy is tied for third in scoring with Vernon and leads the Vipers with nine powerplay goals.

Mark Hamilton has gone home for shoulder surgery and the Vipers say he will be out for the remainder of the regular season.  Does this mean they are expecting him back for the playoffs-RBC Cup?  Im no doctor but I thought shoulder surgery is a good five to six months recovery? Atleast thats what I had heard from someone.  Hamilton wont be back next season, will he recover in time for the playoffs-RBC Cup?  Is it worth keeping him on a card?

With the BCHL trade deadline Friday night at 6pm the Vipers still have one card to play with.  Will we see the Vipers make another move?

Former Vernon Viper Collins Named Hockey East Weekly Top Performer:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Mike Collins is one of  nine players that have been named this week's Hockey East weekly top performers on Monday.

Mike Collins was named Hockey East weekly top performer for a fourth time this season, is entering his fourth and final season at Merrimack College scored the Warriors only goal in a 1-1 OT tie with Providence at Fenway Park on Saturday, adding to his team-leading point totals.  In 12 games this year Collins has collected (4-goals-8-assists-12-points). Collins played two season's in Vernon (2008-2010) In 119 regular season games with the Vipers Collins recorded (55-goals-71-assists-126-points)

Vipers Acquire Mulcahy from Surrey

The Vernon Vipers have completed their second trade in four days sending forward Chase McMurphy and future considerations to the Surrey Eagles in exchange for forward
Brett Mulcahy and future considerations.

Mulcahy is a 20 year old veteran of the BCHL having played in over 200 games.  He led the Eagles in goals with 23 while also adding 12 assists for 25 points.  The Kelowna native will bring some key leadership having served as the Eagle captain the last two seasons and was a very big part of Surrey’s run to the RBC Cup last season.  Mulcahy is not a stranger to the Interior Conference having played just over a year with the West Kelowna Warriors.  He is committed to Holy Cross for next season.

McMurphy joined the Vipers early this season after starting the year in the USHL.  He played in 18 games this season as a Viper and tallied 5 goals and 2 assists.

Mulcahy is expected to join the Vipers tomorrow and suit up Friday night when the Vipers host the Penticton Vees.

Eagles Acquire Forward, Futures From Vipers

The Surrey Eagles have completed a trade with the Vernon Vipers, acquiring forward Chase McMurphy (94) and future considerations in exchange for forward Brett Mulcahy (93) and future considerations.

McMurphy, a native of Chestermere, Alberta, recorded 5 goals and 7 points with Vernon after beginning the 2013-14 season in the USHL. In three previous Junior "A" seasons with the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Calgary Mustangs, the 19 year-old scored 48 goals and 126 total points. McMurphy is committed to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for the 2015-16 season.

McMurphy is expected to make his Surrey debut Friday, January 10th when the Eagles visit Prince George.

Mulcahy, the outgoing Eagles captain, made 174 regular-season and playoff appearances in a Surrey uniform, recording 104 points. He captained the Eagles to their fourth Fred Page Cup championship, a Western Canada Cup championship and an RBC Cup semi-final berth last season, earning an NCAA commitment to Holy Cross in the process.

The Eagles organization would like to thank Brett Mulcahy for his countless contributions to the club on and off the ice, and wish him the best of luck with the Vernon Vipers as they prepare to host the RBC Cup in May. The club would also like to welcome Chase McMurphy to Surrey.

Monarchs Release Former Vipers Captain Ullrich:

The American Hockey League (AHL) Manchester Monarchs have
released former Vernon Vipers forward-captain Mike Ullrich after playing in just three games. The Monarchs signed Ullrich to a professional tryout agreement on November 15th 2013 and will now return to the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Orlando Solar Bears.

Ullrich is in his first season with the Solar Bears. Ullrich was invited to a pro tryout with the American Hockey League (AHL) St. John's IceCaps in September before being released on September 30th 2013 returning to Orlando.

Ullrich played for three different teams last season (South Carolina, Tulsa & Trenton) before signing with the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Orlando Solar Bears on July, 1st 2013.

Ullrich become an unrestricted free agent over the off season after the ownership group of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Trenton Titans pulled the franchise out of the ECHL. According to a statement from the ECHL, all Titans players signed to ECHL contracts, except those owed as future considerations, are unrestricted free agents.

Ullrich started last season with the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) South Carolina Stingrays after signing a contract over the summer. Ullrich left the Stingrays before signing with the Central Hockey League (CHL) Tulsa Oilers on November, 7th 2012. The Stingrays suspended Ullrich after leaving the club but then took Ullrich off suspension before trading the rights of Ullrich to the ECHL Trenton Titans for future considerations on January, 18th 2013. In five games with the Stingrays Ullrich collected 1 goal & 4 assists. The Oilers then suspended and then deleted Ullrich from the clubs roster on January, 17th 2013 after Ullrich left the Oilers for the ECHL Trenton Titans. In 29 games with the Oilers Ullrich collected (7-12-19). In 26 games last year with Trenton Ullrich collected (15-14-29).

Ullrich played parts of two years in Vernon (2005-2007) Ullrich left the Vipers during the 2005-06 season before returning to Vernon the following season after a short stint with the WHL Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 103 games with the Vipers Ullrich collected (39-92-131).

MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have released center Mike Ullrich, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today.

Ullrich, 27, registered one point (1-0=1) in three games with the Monarchs this season.  Prior to joining the Monarchs, Ullrich had collected 14 points (4-10=14) and seven penalty minutes in 14 games with the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears this season.  The 6-foot-2, 198-pound native of Banff, Alberta, split the 2012-13 season between the Central Hockey League’s Tulsa Oilers and the ECHL’s Trenton Titans.  Ullrich collected 29 points (15-14=29) and 26 penalty minutes in 26 games with the Titans, and 19 points (7-12=19) and 36 penalty minutes in 29 games with the Oilers.

High Scoring Forward Comes Back from AHL

Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears, proud affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Iowa Wild and Toronto Marlies, announced today F Mike Ullrich has been returned to Orlando from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Ullrich played three games for the Monarchs, scoring his first career AHL goal in his first AHL game on Friday night against the Worcester Sharks. This season with the Solar Bears, Ullrich has 14 points on four goals and 10 assists in 14 games, and at the time of his recall to the AHL he was tied for the team lead with 14 points. Ullrich has averaged nearly a point-per-game in his professional career with 138 points on 58 goals and 80 assists with Pensacola, Tulsa, South Carolina, Trenton, Orlando, and Manchester.

The Trail Smoke Eaters entered the Christmas break dead last in the B.C. Hockey League, but they certainly began 2014 on a high note.

The Smokies snapped a 12-game losing streak by brushing back the Vernon Vipers 4-1 in front of 848 fans Friday night at Cominco Arena.

Trail (8-28-2-2) surged for three goals less than four minutes apart late in the third period, ending a skid that dates back to mid-November.

The Vipers (20-11-3-4) are second in the Interior Division, two points ahead of the West Kelowna Warriors (21-12-1-3), winners of three straight. Vernon hosted the Nanaimo Clippers (20-18-0-1) Saturday at Kal Tire Place.

With the game tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, Trail’s Travis Stephens (12th goal) netted the winner on a powerplay with 5:44 remaining in regulation. Call-up Riley Brandt (3rd) and Stephens (13th), with an empty-netter at 18:07, put the game away for good.

Lumby’s Dylan Bowen drew an assist on Stephens’ second snipe.

“They worked really hard,” said Vernon head coach Jason Williamson, of the youthful Smokies. “They were aggressive. We created offence but they did too. They’re going to be good in the future.”

After a scoreless first period, Vernon’s Demico Hannoun opened the Vipers’ account early in the second with his 13th goal. The North Delta product walked off the sidewall and into the slot, where he beat Adam Todd (31 saves) low, blocker side. Michael McNicholas and Jared Wilson drew assists.

Bryan Basilico (9th) equalized on the man advantage just over a minute later as Vernon d-man Josh Bryan served a cross-checking minor.

“Our first period was OK. Second period, we just made some bad decisions out there with the puck,” said Williamson. “You could see we weren’t as sharp as we usually are. It was a frustrating night for the coaches. The execution wasn’t there.”

Vernon veteran Colton Sparrow tangled with Basilico in a scrap late in the second period.

Meanwhile, the Vipers traded 20-year-old defenceman Jason Bird and future considerations to the Merritt Centennials in exchange for the CJHL playing rights of 18-year-old defenceman Dylan Chanter.

The Vipers must now complete a deal with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the 16-team USHL where Chanter had been playing this season, before he can officially join the Vipers.

Williamson is confident he can work out a deal with Dubuque, and is excited to welcome Chanter to the Viper den.

“You put a template up of what you want your team to look like, and he definitely fits that mold.”

On Bird, he added: “It was tough. Birdie was good for us and he’s a good kid. But with moving a 20-year-old, we can add another 20 now.”

Williamson indicated he would like to add another forward before Friday’s trade deadline.

Chanter, who is from Armstrong, had spent the last two seasons in the BCHL with Merritt prior to joining Dubuque.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has secured a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats for next season. He has one goal and one assist, along with 21 penalty minutes, in 14 games with the Saints. Chanter pocketed 11 goals and 33 points in two full seasons with Merritt.

Chanter made headlines across North America after he was hurt in an Oct. 12 fight with Corey Petrash of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the corner behind the Dubuque net.

Chanter lost his balance and fell backward, hitting his helmetless head on the ice (dyed pink for a cancer promotion) and dislocating his left shoulder.

The crowd cheered until seeing Chanter begin to severely convulse. His full-body seizure lasted at least two minutes, as team trainers and the RoughRiders’ team doctor rushed to him. He remained on the ice until paramedics arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes later.

The incident sparked renewed debate on fighting in amateur and pro hockey.

Bird will join his third BCHL team after also spending time in Coquitlam. The veteran defenceman was enjoying a great offensive season with five goals and 18 assists in 35 games.

SNAKE BITES: D-man Jordan Klimek, who was named as future considerations in the deal that sent Aaron Hadley to Nanaimo at last year’s trade deadline (McNicholas also came to Vernon in the trade), is playing with Dubuque. The Langley native has eight assists and 10 penalty minutes with the Saints... BCHL scoring leader Landon Smith of the Salmon Arm SilverBacks has committed to the Quinnipiac University Bobcats for next season. Smith, a 20-year-old Denver product, has 34-26-60 in 38 games.

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers game as Vernon defeated Nanaimo 3-2 in front of 2,102 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Austin Smith
Nanaimo:  Tanner Kovacs

Before the game started Kal Tire Place was having technical difficulties with the PA system, as no music was being played during warmup and through out the entire opening period.  They would eventually get the mic going for the start of the game.

1st Period:  The Clippers come very close to opening the scoring on the first play of the night.  Nanaimo would get the puck deep into the Vernon zone before Austin Smith just about lost control of the puck outside of the crease as two Clippers were right in their going for the loose puck before the Vipers were able to clear the zone.  The Vipers would come right back and get a great chance to open the scoring after Mason Blacklock with a wicked wrist shot just two minutes into the game from just inside the blueline beat Tanner Kovacs but went off the crossbar.  A bit of a slow start to the game as both teams were playing pretty tight not giving one another much room out there.  Both teams with very little scoring opportunities as Nanaimo held a slight edge in shots were out to a 4-1 lead.  Devin Brosseau would get a parcial breakaway but it was the Vipers captain Ryan Renz who come up with a solid defensive play to breakup Brosseau's breakaway taking away a great scoring opportunity.  Just before the halfway mark the Vipers with a hard working shift generated several flurries in and around the Clipper net with some hard work down low.  On the next shift Vernon would get the games first powerplay just past the midway mark but it was the Clippers who would get a great chance shorthanded off the first draw.  Anthony Sabitsky one on one riffled a quick low shot from the circle forcing Austin Smith to kick out the left leg making a big pad save.  The Vipers with just a single shot on the man advantage couldnt capitalize as Nanaimo would kill off the penalty.  Just less then two minutes later the Vipers would head back to the powerplay and capitalize.  Mason Blacklock and Colton Sparrow worked hard down low before setting up a pinching Josh Brayn who jumped into the play to beat Kovacs shortside giving Vernon a 1-0 lead at 15:17 Sparrow and Blacklock collected the helpers.  But two minutes later the Clippers would get their first shot with the man advantage but a good penalty kill by Vernon would kill off the minor.  The Vipers with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.  Not the most exciting period but for the most parts both teams were fairly evenly matched.  Nanaimo outshot Vernon 10-8.

2nd Period:  The Vipers would get a great chance to grab a two goal lead off the opening faceoff after Dexter Dancs outwaited Clippers starting goaltender Tanner Kovacs before sliding the puck just wide of the open cage on a great opportunity a minute and a half into the second period.  The Clippers come right back after Brendan Taylor alone in the slot ripped a hard shot that was stopped by Smith with a quick blocker save.  The Clippers would get two back to back early powerplays just a few minutes into the period getting several good looks but Vipers starting goaltender Austin Smith had to be sharp making several key saves as Vernon was able to excape and kill off both minors.  Tyler Povolofskie and Brendan Persley would get a two on one, Povolofskie would shoot but miss the net on another chance for Vernon to go up by two.  Just a few plays later Demico Hannoun setup Dexter Dancs in front who beat Kovacs giving the Vipers a 2-0 lead at 9:36 Hannoun and Michael McNicholas picked up the assists.  On the next shift Hannoun with a nice dangle tried going in and around two Clipper players looked to have made one too many moves couldnt hold onto the puck otherwise Hannoun would have been in all alone.  The Vipers with some good pressure were coming on would grab a three goal lead after Michael Statchuk with a beauty of a goal gave Vernon a 3-0 lead at 12:16 Ryan Renz and Liam Coughlin with the assists.  Just a minute later with Nanaimo going on the powerplay several players from both sides got involved in a minor scrum with some pushing and shoving.  As the game went on from here both teams started not to like one another as a few scrums-pushing and shoving occurred for the remainder of the night.  The Clippers come very close with about three and a half minutes to go.  A shot from the corner went through Vipers starting goaltender Austin Smith and the crease luckily for Vernon the puck didnt hit anybody on its way through the crease and go in.  The Vipers would get a late powerplay that would continue into the third.  Vernon was up 3-0 after 40 minutes of play.  The Vipers with two goals went up by three and I thought had a slight edge in play even though being outshot in the middle frame.  Nanaimo with two early powerplays to start the period couldnt beat Smith had some good chances.  The Clippers outshot the Vipers 16-10.

3rd Period:  The Vipers started the period with the man advantage that was carried over from the second period.  In the opening minute Michael McNicholas with a nice dangle along the sidewall setup Jared Wilson at the side of the net who was robbed by Tanner Kovacs who come across the crease to make a huge save.  Vernon with some good pressure couldnt convert with the powerplay.  Jacob Hanlon setup Corey Renwick alone in the slot early redirected a shot that went high and over Smith into the netting on a great opportunity.  Nanaimo would get an early powerplay that didnt last too long after the Clippers would take a four minute high sticking penalty as both teams played a little four on four before the Vipers would end up with a late powerplay.  But it was the Clippers who seemed to have a little more jump and spark to start the third as Nanaimo with good pressure on Vernon would steal the puck before Clippers leading scorer Brendan Taylor with a nice move at the blueline beat Austin Smith with a low shot along the ice shorthanded getting Nanaimo on the board at 5:37 Korey Morgan and Josh McArdle with the helpers.  The Clippers with a very good penalty kill kept Vernon outside the offensive zone for most of the powerplay before killing off the remainder of the four minute penalty.  Just as the penalty expired the Vipers would head back to the powerplay but again couldnt capitalize as the Clippers with a good penalty kill would excape once again.  Just after the penalty kill the Vipers would get into penalty trouble.  On the man advantage Sheldon Rempal looked to have beat Smith from a sharp angle as the play continued.  Once the play was stopped the referee said the goal didnt go in.  The Vipers would give the Clippers a long five on three powerplay and Nanaimo would cut the Vernon lead to within a goal.  Just as the first penalty expired Nick Gushue was allowed to walk into the slot was stopped by Austin Smith before Bo Brauer jumped on the rebound putting it home making it 3-2 at 11:31 Gushue with the assist.  Nanaimo who pushed hard for the remainder of the third come on strong as the Vipers were back on their heels at times.  Chase McMurphy had a great chance late to give Vernon a two goal lead but somehow missed the open cage hit the side of the net.  Both teams with a few chances late made for an exciting finish.  The Vipers played very well in the final few minutes added some good pressure had the Clippers hemmned in their own end taking valuable time off the clock and not allowing Nanaimo to get Tanner Kovacs to the bench for the extra attacker.  The Clippers would eventually get the play deep into the Vernon zone allowing Nanaimo to get Kovacs to the bench for the extra man with just over fifty seconds remaining.  The Vipers would once again get into penalty trouble taking a minor penalty with just fourty seconds remaining.  The Clippers with good pressure moved the puck around before Austin Smith down low was forced to make two big saves in the final seconds before the Vipers were able to clear the zone and hold on for a thrilling 3-2 victory.  At the buzzer two Nanaimo players got tangled up with the Vipers bench as they come onto the ice to celebrate the win.  Words were exchanged before a minor scrum broke loose as several players from the Clippers joined the scrum.  Bo Brauer was right in the middle of the Vipers.  Both benches were basically on the ice as this situation could have gotten out of hand.  In the end the referee and linesmen were able to break up the melay and get both teams off to the dressing rooms.  Several penalties were handed out at the end of the game but none were announced over the PA system.  Former Vipers Head Coach-GM Mike Vandekamp stood patiently waiting until both teams were off the ice when he had a lengthy discussion with the referee.  Nanaimo outshot Vernon 14-9.  I thought the Vipers got into penalty trouble taking way too many penalties in the final period giving Nanaimo a chance to comeback for the win.  The Clippers with four or five powerplays had some good looks at times couldnt beat Austin Smith. 

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Josh Bryan (1 goal) I thought played a very strong game for the Vipers.  Bryan was very solid defensively and scored a nice powerplay goal to open the scoring.

Michael Statchuk (1 goal) Also played very well on the backend.  Statchuk with just his second career BCHL goal tonight took a high stick to the face, played a heck of a game.

Dexter Dancs (1 goal)  Was very good up front for Vernon, good down low and along the wall with the puck, was very strong and hard to knock off the puck and wasnt afraid to get involved in the play after the whistle on several occasions.

Colton Sparrow (1 assist)  Was also very good for the Vipers, played with a ton of energy and showed lots of hustle and determination in his game tonight.  Worked very hard all night picking up one assist.

Austin Smith (38 saves)  Was very good through out tonight's game.  Let out a few rebounds but otherwise was very strong between the pipes for the Vipers.  Made several key-big saves on the penalty kill at times and through out the contest. 

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

I thought the opening period was pretty dull to start with not alot of action or much of anything going on really for atleast the first seven or eight minutes.  Both teams played a pretty tight checking game with very little opportunities.  As the first period got going I thought Vernon seemed to play well, opening the scoring and limited the Clippers chances.  It was the second period that I thought the Vipers had a slight edge in play and chances even though were outshot.  The Vipers with a big strong penalty kill early to start the middle frame would kill off back to back penalties before scoring two quick goals just less then three minutes apart.  The third was alot of powerplays as Vernon needs to cut down on penalties.  Sure they were up 3-0 in the 3rd but taking four or five penalties is eventually going to cost you and it just about did tonight.  The Clippers with a shorthanded and powerplay goal in the third made things interesting and for a thrilling finish.  Vernon who seems to have troubles with a two goal lead latley were good on the penalty kill and keeping the Clippers to the outside for most of their chances.  The Vipers did get lucky at times and excaped with the win.  The Vipers have to watch the undisaplined penalties especially in the third, the leagues top teams will make you pay look at just before the Christmas break the Vipers got into penalty trouble vs a good club like Powell River (7-2 loss) and made Vernon pay on the man advantage.  Nanaimo didnt get alot of second looks-chances as the Viper defence was pretty good at shutting down all second opportunities.  The Vipers also did a good job at limiting the Clippers time and space, getting in the shooting lanes, blocking shots etc.  Nanaimo didnt have alot of time and space to create and generate chances.  You also have to give Austin Smith credit for keeping the Vipers in at times.  Dylan Chanter wasnt in the lineup and isnt listed on the Vipers roster on the BCHL website, anyone know why he isnt playing yet?  A big crowd on hand for tonight's game saw several Clipper fans in attendance.  Two Vernon products are playing with Nanaimo.

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Anthony Sabitsky impressed me tonight, had a few good chances was quick on his feet, played with lots of jump and was going to the net most of the night.

Bo Brauer (1 goal)  Seemed to try and get under the skin of several Vipers through out the game.  A bigger kid didnt back down played well.

Tanner Kovacs (24 saves)  Played very well between the pipes tonight.  Both goaltenders played well each giving their team a chance to win.

Game Thoughts:  (Nanaimo)

I wasnt too impressed with the Clippers for most of the first two periods.  I thought the Vipers had the better of the scoring chances at times jumped out to a 3-0 lead and were going to go away with the victory but give Nanaimo credit they sure battled hard and played strong in the final frame.  The Clippers did outshoot the Vipers but alot of there shots were from the outside and didnt really generate alot of grade A chances.  I really liked the Clippers game in the third, If Nanaimo would have had this jump-spark in the first two periods we may have been in for a bit of a different game.  The Clippers with a shorthanded and powerplay marker in the third couldnt capitalize with the man advantage went 1-7.  The Clippers with limited chances in periods one and two looked and played with more of an edge in the third gave Vernon a good run in the final twenty minutes.  A bounce here or there and this could have easily been a tied hockey game in the 3rd.  The Clippers may have outshot the Vipers 40-27 but in no way did this mean Nanaimo outplayed Vernon.  The Vipers may have got lucky in the third.  Both teams would split the season series both winning at home.

The Vernon Vipers return home after a 4-1 loss in Trail last night have now dropped back to back games.  Tonight is the first game of a three game home stand.  The Vipers are unbeaten in eight of their last nine home games.  The Vipers sit in 2nd place are six points back of 1st place Penticton and are just two points up on 3rd place West Kelowna.  After picking up atleast a point in twelve of thirteen games Vernon has won just twice in their last six games and are 6-4-0-0 in their last ten games.   Michael McNicholas, Josh Bryan and Mason Blacklock will face their former team tonight.

The Nanaimo Clippers make their first and only visit of the regular season to Kal Tire Place.  The Clippers have just one win in Vernon since the 2003-04 season.  Nanaimo will be looking for the series sweep tonight after shutting out the Vipers 3-0 at home back on October 19th.  Tonight is game three of a current four game road trip where Nanaimo is 2-0 after a 2-1 victory in Salmon Arm last night.  The 3rd place Clippers have won two straight and three of their last five.  Nanaimo is 6-4-0-0 in their last ten games are thirteen points back of 2nd place Powell River.  The Clippers have won three straight away from home and four of their last five games on the road.  Mike Vandekamp will face his former team for the second time this season (Coached the Vipers from 2001-2004).

PRESS RELEASE

The Vernon Vipers have traded 20 year old defenceman Jason Bird and future considerations to the Merritt Centennials in exchange for the CJHL playing rights of 18 year old defenceman Dylan Chanter.

The Vipers must now complete a deal with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL where Chanter had been playing this season before he can officially join his new team.

Chanter who is from nearby Armstrong BC had spent the last two seasons in the BCHL with Merritt prior to joining Dubuque.  The 6’3 215 pound rearguard has secured a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire for next season.

Bird will join his third BCHL team after also spending time in Coquitlam.  The veteran defenceman was enjoying  a great offensive season with 5 goals and 18 assists in 35 games.

The Vipers would like to welcome Dylan to the hockey club and thank Jason for his contributions and wish him the best of luck in the future.

The Vernon Vipers have traded 20-year-old defenceman Jason Bird and future considerations to the Merritt Centennials in exchange for the CJHL playing rights of 18-year-old defenceman Dylan Chanter.

The Vipers must now complete a deal with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the 16-team USHL where Chanter had been playing this season before he can officially join the Vipers.

Chanter, who is from Armstrong, had spent the last two seasons in the BCHL with Merritt prior to joining Dubuque.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder  has secured a scholarship to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats for next season. He has one goal and one assist, along with 21 penalty minutes, in 14 games with the Saints. Chanter pocketed 11 goals and 33 points in two full seasons with Merritt.

Chanter made headlines across North American after he was hurt in an Oct. 12 fight with Corey Petrash of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the corner behind the Dubuque net.

Chanter lost his balance and fell backward, hitting his helmetless head on the ice (dyed pink for a cancer promotion) and dislocating his left shoulder.

The crowd cheered until seeing Chanter begin to severely convulse. His full-body seizure lasted at least two minutes, as team trainers and the RoughRiders’ team doctor rushed to him.

He remained on the ice until paramedics arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes later.

The incident sparked renwed debate on fighting in amateur and pro hockey.

Bird will join his third BCHL team after also spending time in Coquitlam.

The veteran defenceman was enjoying a great offensive season with five goals and 18 assists in 35 games.

The Vernon Vipers return from the Christmas break will play their first game of 2014 make their second visit of the season to the Cominco Arena.  The Vipers won their last visit to Trail come away with a 4-1 victory on November 22nd 2013.  The Vipers have won four straight over Trail.  Vernon hasnt played since before the holidays are coming off a 7-2 loss to the visiting Powell River Kings on December 21st.  The Vipers have two wins in their last five games are 6-3-1-0 in their last ten games.   Vernon sits in 2nd place two points up on 3rd place West Kelowna and five points back of first place Penticton.  The Vipers went 5-3-0-0 in the month of December will play six of eleven games in January at home.

The Trail Smoke Eaters finished off 2013 with a 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting West Kelowna Warriors Monday wrap up a two game home stand vs Vernon tonight before heading to West Kelowna Saturday night.  The Smokies have lost thirteen in a row and have just one win in their last thirty games.  Trail has been outscored 35-16 in their last five games.  The Smoke Eaters have lost six straight at home and are 0-9-0-1 in their last ten games.  Trail sits in 6th place in the Interior Division and last overall in league standings with just seven wins.  The Smoke Eaters went 0-9-0-1 in the month of December will play seven of ten games on the road in the month of January.  Trails last win at home was a 3-2 overtime victory over the visiting Salmon Arm Silverbacks on November 16th 2013.  The Smoke Eaters have given up 173 goals wich is second lowest in the league behind the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Vernon Vipers’ head coach Jason Williamson didn’t let his players take home their full equipment over the Christmas Break.

Gloves, skates and helmets only; just enough to keep their legs fresh.

“They needed to recharge and come back ready to go to work,” said Williamson, who is in Calgary this week scouting the annual Mac’s Midget tournament. He watched the Okanagan Rockets battle Saskatchewan’s Notre Dame Argos Tuesday afternoon.

There is potentially a lot of hockey between now and the RBC Cup, which the Vipers are hosting in May. Williamson said a little extra reprieve over the break could help down the stretch.

“It’ll take a couple of games to get back in shape, but they’re a pretty focussed group and there’s meaningful games right away,” he said.

Vernon enters the New Year ranked second in the Interior Division and fifth overall, at 20-10-3-4. They visit the last-overall Trail Smoke Eaters (7-28-2-2) for a tune-up tilt Friday at Cominco Arena.

“They’ll come back energized too,” said Williamson, of Trail.

“They haven’t had a lot of success, but they’re a hard-working team and they’ve had teams on the ropes.”

The Smokies blew a 3-1 lead Monday night and lost 4-3 in overtime to the West Kelowna Warriors before 1,100 fans at Cominco Arena.

Liam Blackburn bagged the winner at 4:07 of OT. Detroit Red Wing draft David Pope, with a deuce, and Tyson Dallman, completed the West Kelowna offence.

Bryan Basilico (2) and Braden Fuller replied for the Smokies.

“We played well enough to win,” said Smoke Eater coach Nick Deschenes. “But give Kelowna credit, they pressed hard right to the end. There’s a certain way to play to win, and that’s what our group is learning, and the biggest thing is that we learn these lessons and we don’t just let them repeat themselves.”

Yet, rather than putting an emphasis on defence, the Smokies are going on the offensive.

“Where we are at now is in attack mode, I like to call it,” said Deschenes. “We are going to push the pace against these teams. They may be expecting an easy game, and they’re expecting to score lots of goals, and this is where we are going to take that vulnerability and hopefully capitalize and shock some teams.”

The Vipers hold a two-point lead over the Warriors for second spot in the Interior division, and are five points back of division leaders Penticton. The Snakes are led by Mike McNicholas, who sits fourth in BCHL scoring with 19-32-51, Demico Hannoun, and Mason Blacklock. The trio combined for six points in their last meeting with Trail, all netting a goal and as assist.

The Smokies, meanwhile, have just three 20-year-old players remaining in their lineup in defenceman Braden Pears, leading scorer Travis Stephens, and goaltender Dustin Nikkel. Although the team can carry a maximum of five 20-year-olds, Deschenes says that it is unlikely the team will look for any over-age players before the Jan. 10 trade deadline, but rather to enhance the opportunity of the remaining players.

“The benefit we can give our 20 year olds right now, being put in that leadership role, is the opportunity to play substantial minutes, which I think both of them appreciate, and to work with them and help promote them for their opportunities for next season,” said Deschenes.

The Snakes entertain the Nanaimo Clippers (19-18-0-1) Saturday at Kal Tire Place.

Williamson said Mike Vandekamp’s Clippers are always a tough test. They have just one point-a-game player (Brendan Taylor has 12-24-36 in 37 games), but they are backed by solid netminding from Jayson Argue.

Despite a mediocre 16-13 record, the 20-year-old Swan River, Man. native has the third-best save percentage (.925) in the BCHL.

“He shut us out last time (3-0 loss on Oct. 19 in Nanaimo),” said Williamson. “But we’ve done a good job of getting to goalies of late and making it hard on them.”

Said Vandekamp after Nanaimo’s 5-2 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals just before the Christmas break: “We have lots of passion and lots of heart… It’s not that we don’t have it,” said Mike Vandekamp after the game. “We just don’t bring it all the time and that might be the frustrating thing.”

Vernon minor hockey grads Colten Dahlen (5-5-10) and Spencer Hewson (4-6-10) are with the Clippers. Dahlen, a defenceman, is in his third season, while Hewson is a rookie forward.

The Vipers have 21 games remaining, including 11 in January. They visit the Penticton Vees next Friday night.

Former Vipers Defenceman Koopman Announces Retirement:

Hockey Future's has reported that former Vernon Vipers defenceman Kevin Koopman has announced his retirement.  No official press release other then the Hockey Future's website report.

Koopman played parts of three seasons in Vernon (2005-2007) before being traded to Merritt on October 6th 2007 for Patrick Rogan.  In 62 regular season games with the Vipers Koopman collected (2-goals-7-assists-9-points).  Koopman played three seasons at Brown University before retiring from hockey to pursue a career as a doctor.  Koopman was selected 181st overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 6th round of the 2006 NHL draft.

Three Former Vernon Junior Hockey Players Participate In NHL Winter Classic Alumni Games:

With the NHL Winter Classic set for today at Comerica Park in Detroit, yesterday featured two Alumni games involving some of the greatest players ever to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings.

Among the players featured in yesterday's two games, three former Vernon Junior hockey players enjoyed the games and festivities.  Suiting up for the Detroit Red Wings was former Vernon Lakers forward Dallas Drake (1987-88) and former Vernon Vikings goaltender Kenny Holland (1973-74).  Suiting up for the Toronto Maple Leafs was former Vernon Essos forward Dave Tiger Williams (1970-71).
