Crowell sparks Vipers’ attack

In four seasons with the Vernon Vipers, Chris Crowell went from a raw teenage project player to a polished 21-year-old man worthy of a NCAA Division I scholarship.
The classy captain played his 250th career game in the B.C. Hockey League Saturday night, and sensing urgency, led the Vipers with two big goals and one assist, a grocery list of bodychecks and relentless defensive work in a 5-1 Vernon victory over the Penticton Vees before 1,689 fans at Wesbild Centre.
Game 3 in the best-of-seven Interior Conference semifinal series went Tuesday night in Penticton. Game 4 is tonight, also at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
“Tonight, we just wanted to play simple and outwork the other team, and we figured if we did that, we could get success,” said Crowell, moments after his 37th career playoff game and first-star skate.
The Vipers recorded a season-high 41 hits as they slowed down the speedy Vees, who took the series opener in overtime 24 hours earlier, at every turn. The hit totals were 15-3 Snakes after the first period.
“We talked about taking time and space away from them,” said Crowell, who went scoreless in 10 post-season games last season. “They’re a skilled team so it’s important for us to finish every check on them. That’s going to pay dividends in a long series.”
Andrew Hammond made a handful of stellar saves in the first period, but cruised through the final two periods, making an easy stop on Garrett Milan when he tried to deke Hammond on a second-period penalty shot awarded when Connor Jones hooked the Conference’s rookie-of-the-year on a breakaway.
Crowell credited the Vipers’ defence for limiting the Vees to limited scoring chances.
“All six guys back there are all hard to play against. I wouldn’t wanna play against our dee. They did a great job for us.”
The Vipers, who played most of the first period shorthanded Friday night, only gave the Vees two powerplay chances Saturday. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Crowell figures the loss made the Snakes more aware it’s playoff time.
“Facing a little adversity, it sucks at the time, but sometimes a little adversity is good for a hockey team in the playoffs. We didn’t think we were gonna to win 12 straight and win the league so it’s good for some of the younger guys to realize what it actually takes to win in the playoffs.”
Californian Ryan Santana loved his first taste of the Vernon-Penticton playoff rivalry. He felt the Vipers were a calmer bunch in Game 2.
“We were moving our feet,” said Santana, who drew an assist on Cole Ikkala’s wicked wrister goal late in the third period. “In the first game, we had so much tension going and we just wanted to get after it so badly, and we kind of got away from our game-plan a little bit just because we had so much pent-up energy inside. Today, we played our game and good things happen for us because we play our game.
“After the first game, everyone was pretty hard on themselves. We all expect a lot out of ourselves. All the older guys, including myself, we just knew the next game, you gotta bring it, you got to come after it that much harder. We knew what was at stake this game, after being down 1-0. We just came out relaxed and played our game.”
The Vipers headed to Penticton owning one of the league’s best regular-season road records at 18-9-1-2. The Vees had a regular-season home record of 24-4-0-2.
“I think a lot of teams are a lot different at home,” said Santana. “I think a lot of teams play a little more comfortable at home, but we’ve been a really good road team so we’re comfortable going into any building and we know we can beat anybody.”
Vees’ forward Curtis McKenzie expected the Vees to show more jump at home after fizzling in what was their seventh game in nine nights.
“Tonight, all the games all in a row there caught up to us: we just didn’t have our legs like we normally do. Prince George really came to play and it was a very physical series. We have a very good record at home so hopefully we can use it to our advantage.
“We all, including myself, have to work at getting more pucks at the net.”
Crowell scored goals 2:48 apart early in the second period to put Vernon ahead 3-0. His sweetest snipe was on a quick give-and-go with Braden Pimm. Crowell and Collins drew helpers on Pimm’s goal 35 seconds into the third period, giving the line a seven-point night.
Kellen Jones opened the offence late in the first period on a rebound. Matt Paltridge’s slow, low wrister from the high slot briefly put Hammond to sleep four minutes into the final period.

Was at tonights Game 3 as Vernon defeated Penticton 3-2 in front of 1,772 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

1st Period: Before the game during warmup, Kyle Bigos & Derik Johnson were yapping back and forth with one another at center ice. The Vees get off to a quick start. Vipers take an early penalty just seconds into the game and Penticton takes advantage. Garrett Milan steps over the Vernon blueline and wires a shot topshelf over Hammonds glove as the Vees score on the powerplay on their first shot on goal scoring just 1:15 into the game. Assists going to, Ryan Viselli & Travis Oullette. Shortly after the Vipers would head back to the penalty kill as the Vees would jump right back on the powerplay but this time couldnt capitalize with the Vipers killing off the minor. Vernon would get things going with some good quality shots on goal, creating some chances in the Vees zone. The Vipers were skating well buzzing in the Penticton zone but no real solid scoring chances. Vernon would get its first powerplay opportunity of the night and Kellen Jones would beat Bonar at 7:52 tying the game 1-1. Assists going to, Connor Jones & Sahir Gill. Just under two minutes later with the Vipers still in control of the play, Kyle Bigos would beat Bonar from the point giving Vernon the 2-1 lead at 9:40 Braden Pimm collects the lone assist. Some good flow in the period with some back and forth play but no real good chances for either team. Vernon would get its second chance on the powerplay but it would be Penticton who would get the better of the scoring chances. Vernon struggled with the man advantage Kyle Bigos and Bryce Kakoske got too cute with the puck at the line, Adam Zamec would steal the loose puck with a turn over at the Vees blueline, Zamec was going in for the parcial breakaway, before Bigos hustled back, and dove in front of Zamec cutting him from cutting towards the net, Zamec still got off a quick backhand wich Andrew Hammond made the save, the rebound come out front where Erik Slemp was left all alone but was stoned in front by Hammond who had to make two big saves on the penalty kill, Penticton would kill off the minor. Ryan Viselli had a great chance to tie the game with a wrap around but once again Hammond stood his ground making a big save. The Vees really forced the Vipers deep in their own end, taking the body, playing with some agressive forecheck wich hemmed the Vipers in deep as Penticton was buzzing in the Vipers zone in the final few minutes. Vernon was up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. The Vipers outshot the Vees 14-9.

2nd Period: In the opening minutes Brodie Reid with a quick shot from the circle looked like he had Hammond beat, but Hammond slid across the crease, making a big pad save. A very entertaining 2nd period with some great back and forth action. Some good flow back and forth with no stopages in play for a good 7-8 minutes before the first whistle. A very tight checking game as both teams had some chances but didnt hit the net as both teams battled hard down low and in the corners. Garrett Milan had a good chance but was stopped by Hammond. Kellen Jones was in close but just missed the net. Vernon had some great chances in close but couldnt hit the net, missing on some great opportunities. The Vipers had troubles getting shots on net as the Vees defence looked very good giving up just five Vernon shots. Chris Crowell looked like a man on a mission laying out some huge checks in the first half of the 2nd. The Vipers really stepped up the physical play in the 2nd period, laying out some big hits. Ryan Santana with some nice moves through the Vees zone, but missed the net on a great chance from the slot. Kevin Kraus made a big diving defensive play to break up a great Penticton scoring chance. Late in the period the only penalty of the period was called after Cody Ikkala was called four minutes for high sticking. Specialty teams once again took over as the Vees moved the puck well, a pass from the point hit Kyle Bigos in the skate, changing direction of the puck, wich ended up on the stick of a wide open Garrett Milan who tapped the puck into the empty net tying the game 2-2 at 16:48 Curtis McKenzie & Zac Josepher collected the assists. The Vipers would kill off the 2nd half of the four minute high sticking penalty and head into the 3rd tied 2-2. Penticton outshot Vernon 8-5.

3rd Period: Penticton come out flying getting some good chances early. The Vees were skating well, really buzzing in the Vipers zone. The Vipers turned the puck over on several occasions with some poor passes breaking out, as the Vees showed alot of hustle winning most of the races and the one on one battles. Garrett Milan with a chance at the side of the net was stopped by Andrew Hammond. Hammond had to be sharpe as Penticton was really driving towards the net. The Vees would get a powerplay and really moved the puck well, going for the perfect setup but couldnt solve Hammond who was the Vipers best penalty killer. Hammond made a big save off Devon Krogh. Vernon would kill off the minor. The Vipers couldnt get anything going, as the Vees were in full control of the 3rd period. Vernon would hit the Vees blueline and then not come up with a scoring chance or lose the puck. Brodie Reid had a good chance from the slot but was stopped by Hammond. Most of the 3rd was in the Vernon zone as the Vipers were running in circles chasing the puck and the Penticton Vees. Penticton would get another powerplay and once again get some great chances but couldnt beat Hammond. Vernon once again killed off the minor. In the second half of the period Travis Oullette from the slot with a great chance just missed the net after having Hammond beat. Garrett Milan who was by far Pentictons best player also beat Hammond from in close but just missed the net. Hammond made his biggest save of the game with four and a half minutes remaining, Captain Curtis McKenzie took a shot from the corner boards, the puck handcuffed Hammond but somehow managed to reach around his back and still make the glove save. Vernon with no offensive attack all period got one chance late and took advantage. James Kerr setup Cory Kane in the slot who wired his shot off and under the crossbar beating Sean Bonar with a wicked wrist shot at 17:26 putting Vernon up 3-2. In the final two and a half minutes the Vees put all kinds of pressure on the Vipers but couldnt come up with the game tying goal. With the clock winding down Penticton waited till 1:20 remaining to try and get Bonar to the bench for the extra attacker, but both kellen and Connor Jones wouldnt allow Bonar a chance to get to the bench, both Jones Twins showed great hustle and determination forechecking the Vees in the neutral zone, not allowing Bonar to get to the bench, with the Vipers pouring on the forecheck, Bonar finally headed to the Penticton bench with around 40 seconds remaining. The Vees were called on the offside in the dying seconds, this setting up a faceoff just outside the Vernon blueline with just 7.8 seconds left in the game. Penticton with the extra attacker would win the draw, Garrett Milan setup Brodie Reid who stepped over the line and with still time on the clock wired his shot wide as the buzzer would sound and the Vipers would pour onto the ice to celebrate their huge 3-2 victory taking a 2-1 series lead.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Andrew Hammond played one of his best games of the year making some huge saves in the 3rd giving the Vipers the victory. Hammond looked very solid all night, looked very confident and really played his angles well. Hammonds positioning was very well also. I said before Hammond was the Vipers best penalty killer tonight.

Kevin Kraus I thought played a very defensive game on the Vernon blueline. Krause made two defensive plays to breakup a Vees scoring chance. Had a huge hipcheck on Garrett Milan but was called for interference on the play.

Kyle Bigos (1 goal) also played a very strong defensive game. Bigos also broke up a Penticton shorthanded scoring chance in the 1st period, stopping Adam Zamec from going in for the breakaway.

Cameron Brodie played a very phsyical game.

Chris Crowell played a physical game, looked like a man on a mission in the 2nd period, laying out some solid hits.

Ryan Santana played well up front at times.

Adam Thompson was another d-man who looked and played very well on the backend. Thompson played his position very well, stepped up into the play a few times.

Top Players: (Penticton)

Sean Bonar played well in his 2nd BCHL Playoff game. Bonar who made 44 saves in Game 1 got the start in Game 3 after Jordan White played in Game 2 giving up five goals. Bonar is a young goaltender who is very quick on his feet, plays his position well.

Derik Johnson was a thorn in the Vipers side all night. Johnson was beaking off at any Vernon player he could, trying to get under their skin or in their face. Played the old agitator role, and did a great job.

Devon Krogh played a solid defensive game on the backend for the Vees. Looked very good all night.

Ryan Viselli (1 assist) played well, had a few chances but couldnt beat Andrew Hammond.

Brodie Reid played a strong game up front, had some great chances. Was hard to knock off the puck.

Garrett Milan (2 goals) Was by far the Vees best player. Milan was all over the ice tonight, buzzing around Andrew Hammond and the Vipers net. Milan is a smooth skater who can handle the puck, and isnt afraid of getting hit. Very quick and hard to catch.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

What a very entertaining game, on the edge of your seats all night. Well worth the drive up to Penticton. Makes the drive home that much sweeter. The Vipers once again got into penalty trouble early and went down 1-0 early not the start they wanted. But give the boys credit, they battled back scoring two quick goals just minutes apart and just about held that lead into the 3rd before giving up a late powerplay goal. Vipers played good except couldnt get anything going in the 3rd, getting outplayed and outworked for almost all of the 3rd. Very lucky to hang on for the win, thanks to Andrew Hammond. Kane had the Vipers only chance of the period and nailed it home for the game winner. Vipers need to get more then five shots on goal in the 2nd period, missed the net on several chances, need to hit the net on chances in close. Vernon needs to be physical all game, finishing their checks as the Vees stay away from the physical play. Vernon had some great chances in the 2nd to go up 3-1 but couldnt hit the net, luckily it didnt cost them. A very gritty victory and now have a great chance to go ahead 3-1 tomorrow night.

Game Thoughts: (Penticton)

Both these teams are very evenly matched and it showed tonight. Both teams deserve credit for a very well played game. The Vees played and looked much better compared to Game 2. Penticton got off to a great start but couldnt solve Hammond in the 3rd after having some great chances. The Vees were good on the draw tonight and had alot of odd man rushes especially in the 1st period. Home ice advantage goes back to the Vipers as the Vees with a must win tomorrow, as they dont want to go down 3-1 heading back to Vernon, where they have only managed to win once at the Wesbild Centre.

Hammy goes green by viper staff Added 2009-03-09

The Vernon Vipers hockey club is pleased to announce that 20 year old goaltender Andrew Hammond has accepted a scholarship to attend Bowling Green University. Andrew has been one of the hardest working Vipers since joining the team at last year’s trade deadline.

This season Hammond led the league in goals against average at 2.30. He also led the league in shutouts with 5. Hammond was also selected to the All Star game and was awarded the leagues top goalie award. Hammond was named the Vernon Vipers MVP for the 2009/2010 season at the Vipers Awards Banquet as well.

Bowling Green is located in Ohio and plays out of the very prestigious CCHA conference. The Vernon Vipers would like to wish Hammond continued success for the rest of the season and as his future continues.

Vipers secure coaching staff

The Vernon Vipers are very pleased to announce that Head Coach and General Manager Mark Ferner has agreed to a three year contract extension.

With Ferner at the helm the Vipers finished on top of the BCHL’s Interior Conference in 2008-2009 with a record of 42-14-1-3. Now in his second season with the club his BCHL regular season coaching record now stands at 78-34-3-5.

Vernon Vipers owner Dr. Duncan Wray is thrilled to have the current Interior Conference Coach of the Year under contract through 2012. “I am very pleased that we have been able to secure Mark for the next four years. He has proven himself to be among the pre-eminent coaches in all of junior hockey as evidenced by his award this season.

The Vipers have also signed Assistant Coach Jason Williamson to an extension as well. Wray is happy to have him back on board for next season. “Jason has proven to be a reliable and valuable member of our coaching staff, who is a perfect compliment to Mark’s style. I am extremely proud of his contribution to the ongoing success of our team. Vipers players, fans and recruits can rest easy knowing there will be continuity in the organization for the foreseeable future.”

Game 3 Vernon @ Penticton: (Game Preview)

After a must win in Game 2 the Vipers now play Games 3 & 4 on the road in Penticton, where the Vipers have lost their last two meetings. In the past two games at the new South Okanagan Events Centre Vernon got into penalty trouble and ran into some hot goaltending. Specialty teams and goaltending will be the difference tonight. The Vipers are 2 for 4 on the powerplay in the first two games, while the Vees are 2 for 7. The Vees are very strong on home ice winning 24 regular season games at the South Okanagan Events Centre, and are 3-0 at home during these Playoffs. Tonight is Vernons first game of the Playoffs on the road. It will be interesting to see who Fred Harbinson goes with between the pipes. Rookie backup goaltender, Sean Bonar got the start in Game 1 making 44 saves in a big 4-3 OT victory, before the Vees went back with veteran goaltender, Jordan White in Game 2 who looked very shaky giving up 5 goals in the loss. In two games Sean Bonar is 1-0 giving up 3 goals and has a 2.30 GAA In 6 games Jordan White is 3-3 giving up 19 goals and has a 3.28 GAA Pentictons going to need more offence from their top two lines who were no where to be seen in Game 2. The Vees are also going to have to get more shots on goal as the Vipers have outshot the Vees 92-59 in the first two games of this series. The Vipers have been getting scoring from all four lines. March 6th @ Vernon: Game 1 Penticton wins 4-3 Overtime

Just minutes into the game Penticton goes on an early two man advantage, with Andrew Hammond out of his crease and covering the puck, the play still alive, allows the Vees to pick up the loose puck as Garrett Milan beat Hammond putting the Vees on the board first. Everyone starts pushing and shoving before Cameron Brodie and Kyle Bigos drop the gloves as the Vees come out of the mini scrum with a 7 minute powerplay. Vernon kills off the major and then Adam Thompson would tie the game on the powerplay late in the 1st period. Ryan Santana would be stopped on a penalty shot early to start the 2nd period. After some good pressure by the Vipers, Sean Bonar keeps his hockey club in the game, allowing Curtis McKenzie and Ryan Johansen (PP) to give the Vees a two goal lead heading into the 3rd. It was all Vernon in the final frame, as the Penticton defence tried shutting down the Vipers with some early solid defensive coverage before the Vipers would rally scoring two goals tying the game 3-3. Sahir Gill (PP) & rookie Kory Roy beat Bonar sending the game to Overtime. In the extra frame the Vipers looked very soft and nervous, making all kinds of defensive errors causing many turnovers, wich resulted in Garrett Milans 2nd goal of the night, giving the Vees their first win of the season in Vernon. Andrew Hammond made 28 saves in the loss, while Sean Bonar who was a surprise start made 44 saves in the victory.

March 7th @ Vernon: Game 2 Vernon wins 5-1

Kellen Jones put the Vipers on the board first, as the Vipers were up 1-0 after 20 mins of play. Vernon Captain, Chris Crowell would score two goals in the 2nd as the Vipers went up 3-0 after 40 mins of play, Vernon was all over Penticton outshooting them 18-5 in the 2nd period. Garrett Milan missed on a penalty shot on a great chance to get the Vees back into the game. Braden Pimm sealed the victory scoring just 35 seconds into the 3rd as Vernon jumped ahead 4-0. Matt Paltridge would beat Andrew Hammond with a long shot, getting Penticton on the scoreboard. Cole Ikkala rounded out the Vipers scoring late as Vernon tied the series 1-1 with a 5-1 victory. Andrew Hammond made 24 saves for the win. Jordan White made 40 saves in the loss. The Vipers outplayed the Vees for most of tonights game, outshooting them 45-25. This was Pentictons 7th game in 9 nights.

Controversial goal sinks Snakes

The Penticton Vees might not have the same cocky swagger as the veteran-laden roster than claimed the Fred Page Cup last April, but they showed Friday night at Wesbild Centre they're not about to roll over for the Vernon Vipers.
The Vees survived a late Vipers' rally, capitalizing on Garrett Milan's controversial overtime winner to ice the Snakes 4-3 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven B.C. Hockey League Interior Conference semifinal. Game 2 went Saturday night at Wesbild.
The Vipers capped the comeback, raising cheers from the 1,869 fans, on Kory Roy's wrister from the slot on a broken play at 13:59 of the third period.
However, Milan stunned the energetic crowd when he deflected a shot from the sidewall with what appeared to be a high stick, beating netminder Andrew Hammond at 9:15. After a lengthy deliberation with linesmen James Carr and Peter Buxton-Carr, referee Jim Maniago allowed the goal to stand.
“It was great work. All our players were playing good and I was just kind of lucky to tip it in,” said Milan, a Whistler product. “As a small player I’ve got to play with speed like that, working hard down low and getting pucks deep.”
Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner was disappointed with the call.
“It was certainly a high stick, and we’re going to have to take a look at the video,” said Ferner. “Jim said that he didn’t see it, and one of the two linesmen made that call. I’m not sure how or why they can make that call, but they actually said it went off the bar and in.
“It changed directions well before it got to the net.”
Ferner acknowledged his team wasn’t executing properly in overtime.
“We turned the puck over just inside their line when we should have got it deep, and they turn around and transition and the puck is in the back of our net.”
There was dispute over Milan’s opening goal at 2:10 of the first period as well. With the Vees on a two-man advantage, Hammond dove on a loose puck after a scramble in front. He appeared to have the puck covered, but with no whistle from Maniago, the Vees kept chipping away until Milan worked it free and buried it.
After the goal, Vipers’ defencemen Kyle Bigos and Cameron Brodie went after Vees’ forwards Brodie Reid and Curtis McKenzie for interfering with Hammond.
Vernon took earned seven extra penalty minutes for the scuffle and went back to being two men short. Some timely saves from Hammond, who looked rock steady in recording 30 saves, and the Vipers’ ability to clog shooting lanes prevented the Vees from padding their lead.
“That’s certainly not the start that we were looking for,” said Ferner. “We had guys emotionally a little bit too high, and got ourselves into penalty trouble.
“Certainly we wanted to initiate, but not to that extent where we’re putting ourselves behind the eight-ball. We ended up killing most of that first period, and it just takes away from what we’re trying to do.”
Vees’ head coach Fred Harbinson, who is all too happy to accept the underdog role in this series, didn’t seem overly concerned about not scoring more goals on the lengthy powerplay.
“They do a great job of killing penalties, and their goaltender, Hammond, was outstanding. There’s not much you can do about that.
“We’re a young team and we’re trying to compete and that’s all I can ask out of our guys. We’re going up against the best team in the league, in their building... and obviously we’re happy to get the win.
“(Last year), we had healthy scratches that were (NCAA) Division 1 players in the end, and they’ve (Vernon) got kind of the same situation here. They’re built a lot similar to what we were last year.”
Vipers’ rookie Sahir Gill looked sharp in his BCHL playoff debut, deftly tipping d-man Adam Thompson’s powerplay point shot at 16:54 of the first period for the first of his two goals.
His second, also on the powerplay, came midway through the third frame, giving the Vipers a much-needed spark.
The Vees had built a two-goal lead on second-period tallies by Curtis McKenzie, on a great solo effort to split the Vipers’ defence, and Ryan Johansen, who beat Hammond in close.
At the other end, rookie netminder Sean Bonar turned aside 44 shots. His best save came with 15 seconds remaining in the second, when he stoned Braden Pimm on a rebound at the side of the net with a flash of his right pad.
Earlier, the Vipers’ Ryan Santana was hooked while going in on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Bonar read him all the way, shutting the door on his five-hole attempt.
“I just decided he needed to get in there,” said Harbinson, of his decision to start Bonar ahead of veteran keeper Jordan White.
“We have two very capable goaltenders. Bonar was outstanding tonight, with a big save on the penalty shot, and couldn’t be faulted on any of the goals.”
The Vipers’ Connor Jones, who plays a lot bigger than his 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame would seem capable, drew an assist on Gill’s first goal. He also threw one of the bigger hits of the night when he caught Johansen with an open-ice hit that sent both players (and Jones’ mouth guard) flying.
“Guys are raring to go and they’re all hyped up, but we’ve got to control ourselves a little better and have some relaxed intensity and know when to use it,” said Jones.
“A lot of guys haven’t played in the playoffs before... and it’s good to get that first game out of the way. We battled hard... it was just an unlucky bounce.”
Games 3 and 4 go Tuesday and Wednesday night respectively at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton.
“Their team is working hard and so are we, so it’s going to be a good series,” grinned Milan.

Game 2 Vernon 5 Penticton 1

Was at tonights Game 2 as Vernon defeated Penticton 5-1 in front of 1,689 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

1st Period: The Vees had some good early jump carrying the edge in play within the first few minutes but no real scoring chances or quality shots on goal. The Vipers only real good chance early was when Bryce Kakoske whistled a shot just over the crossbar. Penticton would get the first powerplay of the game about five minutes in but couldnt capitalise with the man advantage. Shortly after Vernon killed off the minor the Vipers got their legs going, putting some good presure on the Vees. The Vipers carried the better of the play for most of the 1st period getting some good quality shots towards Jordan White. White looked very shaky and was having all kinds of trouble handling the puck as well as controlling his rebounds. White come out beind his goal to stop the puck, as a Viper was coming hard around the net, White fumbled the puck between his feet as the Vipers come close to scoring. Braden Pimm had a great scoring chance in front but was denied by White. The Vipers would go on the powerplay but couldnt take advantage of the man advantage as the Vees killed off the minor. Vernon would open the scoring after White was all over the place, as a scramble in the crease, Kellen Jones scored at 14:11 assists going to Connor Jones & Sahir Gill. Penticton stepped up their play right after the Jones goal, as the Vees put some presure on the Vipers late in the period, playing their best hockey of the period. The Vipers quit skating, as Penticton really moved the puck well down low, buzzing around Andrew Hammond. Penticton had a few late chances but couldnt beat Hammond. The Vipers were up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Penticton 15-11.

2nd Period: Penticton come out strong to start the 2nd period as the Vipers defence was once again having troubles breaking out of their own end. Ryan Viselli just missed on a great chance in front after a nice pass from the corner. Mike Collins & Chris Crowell with some nice passing, resulted in Crowell beating White at 4:06 putting Vernon up 2-0. Shortly after Garrett Milan on the breakaway was hauled down and was rewarded with a penalty shot. Milan missed the net on the penalty shot on a great chance for the Vees to get back into the game. On the next play Milan snuck in behind the Vernon defence before Kevin Kraus had to hustle back, diving across breaking up the puck, stopping Milan from his 2nd breakaway. On the same play, the puck went into the corner and then fired out front, catching the Vernon d-men napping. Logan Johnston was left all alone in front but was stopped by Hammond. A few minutes later Chris Crowell would get his 2nd goal of the night at 6:54 with the lone assist going to Braden Pimm. This goal seemed to take the fire out from the Vees after having some great chances but not connecting and then the Vipers come back the other way, and score on their chance. The Vees had the better of the play early but the Vipers seemed to pick up their game and really take over control come the 2nd period having the better of the play. Rob Short was stoned by Jordan White in close on a great scoring chance. Kellen Jones with back to back chances on the same play, come close to putting the Vipers up 4-0. Vernon looked very good with most of the play in the Penticton zone. Once again White was flopping around, getting caught way out of position on several occasions. Penticton was going for the long stretch pass on several plays having a player in behind the Vernon defence, but couldnt connect on the pass. Vernon was up 3-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers outshot the Vees 18-5.

3rd Period: 35 seconds into the period the Vees were caught standing around, Erik Slemp fell into Jordan White and then didnt get up right away, Braden Pimm beat White & Slemp who were tangled up on the play putting the Vipers up 4-0 and in full control. Assists going to, Mike Collins & Chris Crowell. White looked very upset on the play, really giving it to his forward. From here on in Vernon seemed to sit back as the Vees really forced the play, having the better of the play for most of the period. Penticton looked a little slow at times coming through the zone, as the Vees didnt have much jump. Ryan Viselli had a good chance in front but was stopped by Hammond. Not many real good quality chances even though the play was in the Vernon zone for most of the 3rd. Pentictons Matt Paltridge stepped over the blueline and beat Hammond with a long shot at 3:52 getting the Vees on the board. This is a goal I think Hammond would like to have back. Twice both teams were forced to play four on four with no real good scoring chances. On a bad line change Mike Collins wired a shot from the circle just missing the top corner. Ryan Santana had the Vipers best scoring chance late in the 3rd after Santana did all the work, using his upper body strength to carry the puck down low, then went for the wrap around before White made an unreal glove save. Santana thought he had scored throwing his hands in the air. Off the next draw Santana & Kyle Bigos setup Cole Ikkala who beat White at 16:50 as Vernon was up 5-1. In the final few minutes Kyle Bigos and Captain Curtis McKenzie wanted to drop the mits before the ref got between the two, breaking up any extra activities. As McKenzie went to the bench both him & Crowell were beaking at one another. Vernon would go on to win tonights Game 2 5-1 tying the 7 game series 1-1. The Vipers outshot the Vees 12-9.

Top Players: (Vernon)

James Kerr played his 2nd straight good game, showing lots of jump and energy. Really skated well, was working hard, going into the corners. Ive been very impressed with Kerrs play so far in the Playoffs.

Cory Kane showed spurts of some brilliance. Had some good rushes cutting through the neutral zone.

Cole Ikkala (1 goal) played physical and worked hard all night.

The line of Chris Crowell (2 goals & 1 assist), Braden Pimm (1 goal & 1 assist) & Mike Collins (2 assists) was Vernons best line tonight. Crowell played a very complete game, looking good and playing very well at both ends of the rink. Crowell laid out several huge hits, showed lots of skill with the puck. Braden Pimm scored a nice goal after some good hustle. Pimm had a few chances through out tonights game. Good to see Mike Collins pick up 2 assists. Maybe this will give the kid some confidence. Collins has looked very nervous in both Games 1 & 2. Collins has been shying away from the corners, the physical play and seems to be a little tenative at times. Looks like the same kid I watched at the start of the season. Lets hope Mike can regain his confidence and get back to his play, that he finished off the regular season with.

Ryan Santana (1 assist) played his 2nd straight solid game. Santana once again looked very good down low, very hard to beat off the puck. A true work horse who never quits. Very hard worker, plays with a ton of hustle.

Andrew Hammond (24 saves) Played very well, didnt really have to make any huge saves but made the ones he needed too. I think Hammond would like to have back Matt Paltridge's goal, after a long shot from just inside the blueline.

Top Players: (Penticton)

Devon Krogh played very well on the Vees backend. Krogh played physical and looked good with and without the puck.

Ryan Viselli had a few chances but couldnt capitalise. Was hit hard a few times through out tonights game, but didnt back down, going right back giving back a shot of his own.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

I thought the Vipers outplayed and outworked the Vees for most of tonights game. Vernon did still seem to have some troubles defensively in their own end and also on the breakout but otherwise played good. In the first two games of this series the Vipers have fired 91 shots towards the Vees net, while the Vees have just 64 shots on the Vernon net. The Vipers scored on their chances tonight, where they couldnt capitolise on their chances last night at times. Tonights game was a must win for the Vipers, as they didnt want to head down to Penticton for Games 3 & 4 down 2-0. A very well reffed game by Grant Tyson, great job!

Game Thoughts: (Penticton)

Penticton looked much better in Game 1. Not much of a showing from the top two lines of the Vees. Garrett Milan, Curtis McKenzie, Matt Paltrdige & Ryan Johansen who played so well last night were basically no where to be seen tonight. The Vees looked a little tired and didnt seem to have the same jump and energy they played with in Game 1. I have to question Fred Harbinsons move in starting Jordan White in Game 2 tonight, when Sean Bonar made 44 saves in Game 1 giving the Vees the 4-3 OT victory. Jordan White who is now 2-5 against Vernon this season looked very shaky tonight. White has always seem to have problems with his puck control along with rebound control and it showed tonight. If I was the Vees coach, Bonar deserves to get the start in Game 2 tonight. Penticton is having all kinds of troubles getting pucks towards the net, getting just 3 shots in last nights 3rd period and then only 5 shots in the 2nd and just 9 in the 3rd when down 3-0. If Penticton expects to win this series, their going to have to get more shots on Andrew Hammond. Penticton couldnt capitalise on their scoring chances and Vernon did. The Vees also will need their top two lines to show up in their next game.

Game 2 Penticton @ Vernon: (Game Preview)

Penticton (4-2) @ Vernon (0-1)

Tonight’s Game 2 will be a must win situation for the Vernon Vipers after losing in Game 1 last night 4-3 in Overtime. Vernon dosnt want to be down two games heading to Penticton for Games 3 & 4 Tuesday-Wednesday, as the Vipers have lost their last two meetings at the new South Okanagan Events Centre. The Vees who have been one of the hotter teams in the BCHL since the Christmas break come into tonight’s game winning three out of the last four meetings between these two hockey clubs. After a tough hard fought five game series with the Prince George Spruce Kings, & picking up their first win in Vernon last night, the Vees have all the momentum going into tonight’s game. The Vipers on the other hand have been off for the past two weeks and now are down 1-0 in the series. Specialty teams and goaltending will be the difference tonight, after both played key roles in last nights contest. March 6th @ Vernon: Game 1 Penticton wins 4-3 Overtime

Just minutes into the game Penticton goes on an early two man advantage, with Andrew Hammond out of his crease and covering the puck, the play still alive, allows the Vees to pick up the loose puck as Garrett Milan beat Hammond putting the Vees on the board first. Everyone starts pushing and shoving before Cameron Brodie and Kyle Bigos drop the gloves as the Vees come out of the mini scrum with a 7 minute powerplay. Vernon kills off the major and then Adam Thompson would tie the game on the powerplay late in the 1st period. Ryan Santana would be stopped on a penalty shot early to start the 2nd period. After some good pressure by the Vipers, Sean Bonar keeps his hockey club in the game, allowing Curtis McKenzie and Ryan Johansen (PP) to give the Vees a two goal lead heading into the 3rd. It was all Vernon in the final frame, as the Penticton defence tried shutting down the Vipers with some early solid defensive coverage before the Vipers would rally scoring two goals tying the game 3-3. Sahir Gill (PP) & rookie Kory Roy beat Bonar sending the game to Overtime. In the extra frame the Vipers looked very soft and nervous, making all kinds of defensive errors causing many turnovers, wich resulted in Garrett Milans 2nd goal of the night, giving the Vees their first win of the season in Vernon. Andrew Hammond made 28 saves in the loss, while Sean Bonar who was a surprise start made 44 saves in the victory.

High Stick?

Here’s a picture from last night’s Game 1 on Garrett Milans Overtime winning goal. The Vipers & most fans at the Wesbild Centre thought it was a high stick, you make the call. Milan was credited with the goal scoring his 2nd goal of the night, sending the Vees home with the 4-3 OT win.

Short Returns To The Lineup For Game 2 Tonight:

The Vernon Vipers will welcome veteran forward Rob Short back to the lineup for Game 2 tonight. Short has missed the last three games after serving a match penalty for his check from behind hit on Warrior Brendan Ellis. Short a local kid will be welcomed back, very strong on the penalty kill, a hard worker and one who plays physical and can also put the puck in the net. Has played very well against the Vees this season scoring 4 goals and adding 1 assist. The question is what will the Vipers do with rookie Kory Roy? All regular season Roy has been a healthy scratch for the most parts of the season, getting into the odd game. Put Roy in the Vernon lineup and here’s a kid who plays with a ton of jump, hard work and good hustle, a smaller kid who has some wheels and has scored two of the Vipers biggest goals this season, both game tying goals vs Salmon Arm in the regular season and then last night in Game 1 vs Penticton. Roy is part of the Vipers future for next season, after a solid game last night will he get another start tonight or head back up to the pressbox?

Game 1 Penticton 4 Vernon 3 (Overtime)

Was at tonights Game 1 as Penticton defeated Vernon 4-3 in Overtime in front of 1,869 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

1st Period: A surprising move to start tonights game as Penticton went with rookie backup goaltender, Sean Bonar between the pipes. The Vees got an early powerplay just one minute into the contest before going on an early two man advantage. Andrew Hammond come out of his crease to dive on a loose puck, with a scramble around the Vernon goaltender, Hammond had the puck covered, with no whistle on the play, Penticton was allowed to keep digging away, Garrett Milan picked up the puck beating a down and out Hammond scoring on the powerplay at 2:10 putting the Vees up 1-0. Assists going to, Captain Curtis McKenzie. The Vipers argued the goal thinking Hammond had the puck covered. Kyle Bigos & Cameron Brodie started pushing and shoving before Bigos dropped his gloves, as did Brodie as a small scrum formed in the corner, with everyone getting involved. With Penticton still on the man advantage, the Vees would get a seven minute powerplay after the Vernon fighting majors. Bigos was given (2)(5) & (10). With the Vees now on a extended powerplay, had a few good scoring chances. Garrett Milan was buzzing all period, Milan had two great chances in close but was stopped by Hammond. Hammond then come up with a big chest save on Max Grassi from the slot. Vernons penalty kill was good killing off the man advantage as the Vees were up early in shots 12-1. Shortly after the Vipers would get their first powerplay of the period but couldnt find the back of the net. Connor Jones had Vernons best chance in close but was stopped by Bonar. Vernon got a little sloppy giving up a parcial shorthanded breakaway to Curtis McKenzie, McKenzie was stopped by Hammond in close. The Vipers were driving hard to the net, trying to get under the skin of Sean Bonar, Bonar didnt seem to like the heavy traffic in front, getting bumped a few times, and then talking to the ref after a stopage in play. Most of the period was on the powerplay as the Vipers would get a second man advantage, Adam Thompson with a screened shot from the point found its way through traffic beating Bonar at 16:54 tying the game 1-1. Assists going to, Connor Jones. The Vipers were buzzing late in the 1st getting some great chances down low. Bonar kicked out a long shot from Sahir Gill, and then robbed Braden Pimm in close, kicking out his right pad at the last second. Vernon had the edge in play in the second half of the period. Vipers played a physical period laying out some good hits. The game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. Penticton outshot Vernon 18-13.

2nd Period: The Vees come out strong to start the middle frame getting the puck in deep, really forcing the play in the Vernon zone. The Vipers were having troubles clearing their own end, as the play was held deep in the Vernon zone for the first few minutes. Penticton with a two on one early couldnt connect on the pass through the slot, back came the Vipers on a good three man rush before Ryan Santana carried the puck in over the line, Santana who was being hooked in close was given a penalty shot on the play. Santana looked a little slow going in on Bonar who shut the fivehole stopping the Viper 20 yr old keeping the score tied 1-1. This seemed to turn the tables as the Vipers took over the play for the next 7-8 minutes really getting some great chances in close. Bonar played well in the 2nd period looking very sharp coming up with some big saves. Vernon carried the edge in play but couldnt find the back of the net, after getting some good chances Adam Zamec setup Curtis McKenzie who showed some great hustle and determination, splitting the Vernon defence, and then beating Hammond blocker side giving Penticton the 2-1 lead at 12:41. This goal seemed to be a back breaker as the tables now turned once again now giving the momentum back to the Vees. Just minutes later with Penticton on a man advantage it didnt take long, Ryan Johansen was left alone in front, beating Hammond at 16:15 putting the Vees up 3-1 and in control. Assists going to, Travis Oulette & Ryan Viselli. Some nice work in the corner by Oulette and Viselli who come up with the puck, feeding a wide open Johansen. Vernon couldnt seem to regroup after giving up the McKenzie goal and was down two goals after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers seemed to back off from the physical as the period went along. Vernon outshot Penticton 16-10.

3rd Period: Vernon got the play in deep as the Vees come out playing a very defensive 3rd trying to shut the Vipers offence down. Vernon couldnt seem to generate much offence in the early goings as the Penticton defence wasnt giving much room for the Vipers to move. The Vees defence was collapsing down low, as the Vipers were having troubles getting the puck towards the net. Some big blocks and players in front causing all kinds of havoc for Vernon who looked frustrated in the first half of the 3rd. Connor Jones had a great chance but was stopped by Bonar who played very well all night. Vernon would get a powerplay and Sahir Gill would be left alone at the side of the net, blasting a shot past Bonar at 9:16 as the Vipers cut the lead to 3-2. Assists going to, Kellen Jones & Bryce Kakoske. Some nice puck movement on the man advantage really made this goal happen. The Vipers kept battling now really forcing the play, Penticton was now back on their heels as the Vees couldnt get the offence going as it was all Vernon the 3rd. Braden Pimm was once again robbed by Bonar. With 6:01 remaining on a Vees turnover in their own end, rookie Kory Roy beat Bonar unassisted as Vernon tied the game 3-3 as Penticton blew the two goal lead. This wasnt a good period for the Vees, as they sat back all period relying on playing a tight checking, defensive game. Garrett Milan had the lone Penticton scoring chance as it was all Vipers. The game was tied 3-3 after 60 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Penticton 17-3.

Overtime: Both teams looked a little tenative to start the extra period, it almost looked as if both teams were waiting for one another to make the first mistake. Vernons defence looked very nervous or were clutching their sticks a little too tight, having all kinds of trouble breaking out of their own end. A few turnovers and some poor passing caused for some close calls as Penticton come close to ending the hockey game. Braden Pimm had the Vipers best and only scoring chance, as Pimm wired a shot from the circle just missing the net. The Vees come very close to ending the game after getting their best scoring chance, a shot from the point just missed the far corner as Hammond was screened on the play. Penticton was really forcing the play, attacking the Vipers in their own end, and it worked as Vernon couldnt get anything going, having all kinds of trouble coming out of their own end. Derik Johnson & Brodie Reid setup Garrett Milan who tipped the puck past Hammond at 9:15 giving the Vees the 4-3 Overtime victory. Pentictons bench erupted pouring onto the ice as the Vipers argued that Milans goal was tipped in with a highstick. Both the ref and linesmen gathered for several minutes before calling it a goal. Penticton gets its first win of the season at the Wesbild Centre. Penticton outshot Vernon 3-1.

Cameron Brodie played a very physical/defensive game. Brodie laid out some huge hits all night, looking very solid on the Vernon blueline.

Sahir Gill (1 goal) Todd Miller was saying on the radio brodcast Adam Thompsons powerplay goal in the 1st period was now rewarded to Gill. This now giving Gill two goals on the night. Gill worked hard looking very good up front.

Connor Jones (1 assist) Showed alot of hustle, was skating hard all night. Jones was battling hard in the corners and in and around the net. Laid out some good checks.

The line of James Kerr, Ryan Santana & Kory Roy was the Vipers best line. Santana who works hard each and every shift, played very well tonight. Carried the puck on several occasions, coming up with some nice plays. This kid works hard every game, showed alot of hustle and determination all night. Kory Roy (1 goal) dosnt get to play much, but when he does he sure proves he can play in this league. Another kid who shows alot of determination and hustle every shift. Roy was flying all night, scored the games tying goal after some hard work to cause the turnover and then score the game tying goal.

Curtis McKenzie (1 goal & 1 assist) Played a heck of a game for the Vees. McKenzie has played very well against Vernon all season, coming up with some big goals. Always involved in the play, skates well and has some nice hands. Very hard to get off the puck, good hustle and determination in the 2nd period splitting the Vernon defence to beat Hammond putting the Vees up 2-1.

Ryan Johansen (1 goal) Played very well up front. This kid has come along way since the start of the season. Another hard working kid who dosnt give up.

Garrett Milan (2 goals) Was by far Pentictons best player tonight. Milan was buzzing around the Vernon net all 1st period and didnt let up as the game went on. This kid was flying all night, showing lots of hustle. Had three great chances in the 1st and through out Game 1. One of the smaller kids in the BCHL but isnt afraid of the rough going, was levelled by Cameron Brodie in the 3rd getting right back up, going back taking a shot at the Viper d-man.

Sean Bonar (44 saves) I was very suprised to see Bonar get the start in Game 1 after veteran goaltender Jordan White carried the load between the pipes during the regular season and in the 1st round of the playoffs vs PG. The Vipers were driving hard towards the net early in tonights game, trying to get traffic in front, getting under the skin of the rookie tender. It seemed to work early but as the game went on, Bonar seemed to settle down. Looked very confident, made some big saves at key times, giving the Vees a chance to win. Very quick on his feet. Played very well.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

Tonights game had a bit of everything, some strange & missed calls, guys from both teams falling down, the puck seemed to be bouncing around the rink, taking some funny bounces all night. A very poor non call on the Penticton first goal and on the OT game winning goal. Pentictons first powerplay goal was clearly covered by Andrew Hammond, as Hammond was down and out, outside of his crease with a barage of players around him, the play was kept alive with no whistle, the Vees kept digging away before picking up the loose puck and beating Hammond. This play should have been whistled down. On the Vees Overtime winning goal, Milan tipped the puck past Hammond with a highstick, this goal should have never counted. Todd Miller and Don Klepp said on the radio brodcast they watched the replay and Milans goal was clearly tipped in with a highstick. A penalty filled opening period didnt really allow both teams much chance to play one another five on five. After a slow start the Vipers took over the edge in play after the opening few minutes was held by Penticton. Some good presure down low and in close with some good chances, but coming up with no goals really hurt. Sean Bonar gave the Vees a chance after Vernon carried the edge in play before Curtis McKenzie gave the Vees the 2-1 lead as Penticton re-took over the play in the remainder of the 2nd scoring two big second period goals. Give the Vipers credit for battling hard, scoring two goals tying the game. The Vipers played a physical 1st but as the game went on, laid off the hits. Five on five Vernon was the better team tonight for most of the game, except for Overtime. The Vipers struggled in the extra period looking very disorganised in their own end. Vipers defence gave up a few turnovers in their own end, the Vipers also gave up too many odd man rushes through out tonights game. Vipers with a must win tomorrow night in Game 2.

Game Thoughts: (Penticton)

After getting an early extended powerplay the Vees obviously carried the edge in play but only scored the one powerplay goal. Like I said before five on five the Vipers were the better of the two teams. Penticton scored two timely goals in the 2nd period after the Vipers with some good presure come close to taking the lead but couldnt beat Bonar. Penticton sat back, playing a very defensive game to start the 3rd, the Vees defence did a great job at clogging up the neutral zone, collapsing to the front of the net, giving the Vipers all kinds of trouble, with getting shots through. This plan didnt seem to last as Vernon managed to work their way through this as the Vees blew a two goal lead in the 3rd as the Vipers sent tonights game to Overtime. After watching the 3rd you think the Vees were done, but give this team full credit. Penticton didnt give up, really forcing the Vernon d-men causing turnovers and some poor passes wich resulted in the OT winner. Penticton worked hard and played well with the Vipers as both teams are evenly matched. Penticton gets its first win in Vernon this season after going 0-4 during the regular season. The Vees have struggled on the road this yr, going one game below 500 during the regular season and then lossing its first two games on the road in the 1st Round of the Playoffs, so tonights win will give them a big boost of confidence.

The Penticton Vees and Vernon Vipers kick off their second round playoff series Friday at Wesbild Centre.

The Vees are coming off a hard fought battle with the Prince George Spruce Kings that saw the series go all the way to game five.

With a day’s rest they are now going up against the Vipers, who won six, of their eight game regular season series. Penticton stepped it up at the end of the series and took their last season game against the Vipers by a score of 5-3.

“The Vees are a club that are youngest in the league and have the best record in the interior for the last 10 games of the season,” says Vees broadcaster Ryan Pinder.

Penticton was led in points this season by two 1991-born players; Curtis McKenzie and rookie Garrett Milan posted 64 and 57 points respectively.

Pinder warns that although the Vees are coming into the series with momentum, the Vipers may be coming to the series “seeking justice.” The Vipers maybe looking for revenge after the Vees won the Interior Conference during last year’s playoffs and went on to win the Fred Page Cup.

“Vernon has a lot of returning players and the revenge factor working for them,” he added. “They won’t be coming out flat."

The series starts out in Vernon at a building that the Vees haven’t had much success in this year.

“The Vees haven’t won there yet this season,” said Pinder. “So it might be a mental obstacle.”

While Pinder admits that the Vipers don’t have any glaring weaknesses he thinks the team’s lack of a single star player might be detrimental to the team.

“They don’t have a game-breaker like they did last year with Hunter Bishop,” says Pinder.

He adds that because Vernon is an older team he expects to see a more physical game out of them full of “gritty workman effort.”

Game 1 Penticton @ Vernon: (Series Preview)

The Vernon Vipers & the defending BCHL Champion Penticton Vees meet in the 2nd Round of the BCHL Playoffs for the 3rd straight season & 6th time in the last 8 years. The Vipers are coming off a 1st Round Bye as the Vees are coming off a 1st Round 5 game series vs the Prince George Spruce Kings. Vernon finished the regular season at (42-14-1-3) winning the Interior Division Pennant. The Vipers also finished the season ranked at #4 on CJHL's final Top 15. Penticton finished tied for 3rd place with the Westside Warriors at (36-17-0-7) Westside claimed 3rd place due to more wins. Vernon struggled to finish the regular season going, 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games, winning once in their final three games. Penticton finished 8-1-0-1 in their last 10 games, finishing the season on a three game winning streak. Vernon won the regular season series going 6-2. Penticton did win two out of the final four games between these two teams. Both Penticton wins come on home ice. The Vees went 15-5 in their last 20 games of the regular season, scoring 81 goals and giving up 45 goals, picking up two shutouts. The Vipers also went 15-5 in their last 20 games of the regular season, scoring 71 goals and giving up just 40 goals, collecting four shutouts. One of the longest rivalries in BCHL history heats up once again. Last year the Vipers battled back down 3-1 forcing game 7 before the Vees ended the Vipers season with a 5-2 victory going on to win the BCHL Fred Page Cup.

Tonight was the first meeting between these two teams since last years Game 7 Playoff Game. Penticton didn’t look very good as the Vipers handelled the Vees easily winning 6-2. November 22nd @ Penticton: Vernon wins 4-3 in Overtime

The Vipers made there first ever visit to the brand new South Okanagan Events Centre, coming home with a big 4-3 OT victory. Kellen Jones scored just 10 seconds into Overtime giving Vernon the win. This was a very entertaining hockey game. Ryan Viselli & Denver Manderson collected 2 pts each, as Jordan White looked very shaky taking the loss for the Vees in goal. Connor & Kellen Jones each picked up 2 pts, as Andrew Hammond played well getting the win between the pipes.

November 29th @ Penticton: Vernon wins 3-1

Curtis McKenzie scored the lone Vees goal in a 3-1 loss to Vernon. This was the second meeting between these two teams within a week. Cory Kane, Rob Short, & Captain Chris Crowell scored for Vernon, Andrew Hammond made 23 saves getting the win, looking very sharpe between the pipes.

December 5th @ Vernon: Vernon wins 5-4

Tonights game was the 3rd meeting within two weeks for these two teams as the rivalry goes on. Vernon was down 4-3 heading into the 3rd period but goals from John Digness and Rob Short helped the Vipers defeat the Vees 5-4. Brodie Reid, Zack Jojespher, Logan Johnston, & Garrett Milan scored for the Vees. Kevin Kraus, Sahir Gill, and Rob Short paced the Vipers with 2 pts each. January 10th @ Penticton: Penticton wins 5-1

Vernon looked very good in the 1st period outshooting Penticton 15-0 but couldn’t solve veteran Joradn White to made some key saves. The Vees come out hard in the 2nd period, but it would be the Vipers who would open the scoring on a goal from Sahir Gill. The Vees would rally getting two goals from, Denver Manderson & Curtis McKenzie. The Vipers would get into penalty trouble come the 3rd as the Vees would score twice on the PP putting away Vernon 5-1. Brodie Reid with two and Ryan Viselli scored in the 3rd. Denver Manderson was by far the best player tonight picking up 1 goal & 3 assists in the victory. Andrew Hammond took the loss, while Jordan White picked up the win.

Ryan Viselli opens the scoring as the Vees get on the scoreboard first, but not before Sahir Gill ties things up 1-1 in the 1st period. Adam Zamec gives Penticton the 2-1 lead early into the 2nd period, before the Vipers rally with three straight goals to defeat the Vees 4-2. Chris Crowell, Connor Jones & Mike Collins with an empty netter rounded out Vernons scoring. Jordan White took the loss making 27 saves. Andrew Hammond gets the win, making 22 saves.

February 17th @ Vernon: Vernon wins 2-1 in Overtime

After a scoreless 1st period Ryan Johansen opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the 2nd period putting Penticton up 1-0. Mike Collins tied the game on the powerplay as both teams headed into the 3rd deadlocked at 1-1. No scoring in the final frame as both teams had some good chances. Rob Short would score the Overtime winner on a wrap around play, wich gave the Vipers there fourth straight win. Andrew Hammond played very well making 22 saves getting his 26th win of the season. Jordan White also played well, making 28 saves taking the loss.

February 21st @ Penticton: Penticton wins 5-3

The Vipers got off to a strong start, carrying the better of the play but ran into a hot goaltender in Jordan White, who kept the Vee’s in the game early. Penticton scored three goals in five minutes in the 1st, scoring two on the man advantage, jumping out to a early 3-0 lead. Vernon fired back with having the better of the play in the 2nd and 3rd periods but couldn’t buy a break, coming up with some great scoring chances. Curtis McKenzie with two goals, Zach Josepher with two points, & Matt Paltridge lead the Vees scoring attack. Jordan White made 26 saves in the Vees net, looking very strong. James Kerr, Cory Kane & Sahir Gill scored for the Vipers. Bryce Kakoske picked up two assists. Andrew Hammond was pulled after the 1st period giving up three goals. Graeme Gordon took the loss making four saves. Vernon outshot Penticton 29-18.

Nothing screams team unity like a bunch of blond mohawks. And the peroxide was flowing freely as the Vernon Vipers trimmed up for another run at the B.C. Hockey League’s Fred Page Cup.
Game 1 of the best-of-seven Interior Conference semifinal against the Penticton Vees goes tonight at Wesbild Centre. The Vees shaded the Prince George Spruce Kings 6-4 to win their best-of-five elimination round 3-2 Wednesday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Game 2 goes Saturday at Wesbild, with the series heading to Penticton for games 3 and 4, Tuesday and Wednesday.
If necessary, game 5 goes Friday at Wesbild, with game 6 Saturday in Penticton, and game 7 Tuesday, Mar. 17 in Vernon.
The Vipers’ new hairdos range from hilarious – Kyle Bigos, Kory Roy and Mike Collins – to surprisingly stylish.
“Kory Roy’s is the funniest by far, but Nick Amies’ and Cam Brodie’s look the most professional,” grinned Bigos. “I think he (Amies) loves going to school looking like that, showing that he’s part of the team.
“I’m going to be wearing it for a while. I even bought an extra box (of dye) or two to touch it up in case it starts fading.”
Added Vipers’ captain Chris Crowell: “I had to do mine twice, and some guys had to do their’s three times. It does burn after while, like when you leave it in for twice the recommended time.
“We actually voted on it and for some reason blond mohawks won by a landslide.”
Asked if he considered adopting the new hairstyle, Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner chuckled: “If Todd (Miller) would get one, I would get one. Then again...no.”
Despite the lighthearted demeanour around the dressing room, the Vipers have been all business on the ice. Ferner has put the players through intense practice to ensure they stay focussed.
“It’s been a long 10 days here, but our guys are still pretty upbeat and they’re chomping at the bit,” said Ferner. “They need to play a hockey game here real soon.
“For the most part we’re healthy. They’ve worked hard this week, they’ve battled, and believe it or not, we got banged up in practice. We feel they’re game-ready.”
Despite losing veteran playmaker Denver Manderson to season-ending surgery, the Vees rolled into the postseason having won eight of their last 10 games.
Vernon owned the season series with Penticton at 6-2, and the returning Vipers will remember bowing to the Vees in a heartbreaking seven-game series last year.
“Losing to them in Game 7 was tough, and that’s still pretty fresh in the mind of a lot of the returning guys,” said Crowell. “But we’re not worrying as much about the other team. We’re making sure that we’re ready to go. We feel that if we play at our best, that’s all that matters.”
Bigos is as excited as a kid on Christmas morning for the playoffs to start.
“We’ve been waiting for so long. We’ve been counting down the sleeps.”
The Vees realize they’re going up against a deeper Vipers team than the one they met last year.
“That’s an uphill battle,” said Vees’ head coach Fred Harbinson. “You’ve got probably the best team in the entire BCHL. You’ve got a great coach there who won coach-of-the-year. They are definitely a team that’s had our number all year long.”
Added Vees’ d-man Devon Krogh: “Our season record isn’t the strongest against them. I think it’s going to take a lot of hard work and I think we have a way better team than we did at the beginning of the season.”
There will be a tailgate party tonight, starting at 5:00 in the Wesbild parking lot. There will be rally towels for the first 1,000 fans. The Vipers are also offering a discount on tickets – buy a Game 1 ticket at regular price, and get Game 2 for $6.

After posting back-to-back shutouts in the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup this past weekend, sophomore goaltender and Vernon Vipers grad Bryce Christianson received the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for March 3-9, 2009, the conference announced on Tuesday.

A local of Anchorage, Christianson posted his first collegiate shutout against Alaska Fairbanks on Feb. 27 at the Carlson Center. In his seventh straight start, Christianson’s 31 saves paved the way for a 1-0 defeat over the host Nanooks for the one-game advantage going into the final game in Anchorage.

On Saturday night in front of a season-high 5,350 fans at the Sully, Christianson once again was flawless in goal with 15 saves. Christianson fought off five UAF power players and a game-high 9 shots in the second frame.

The back-to-back shutouts on Feb. 27-28 posted by Christianson and the Seawolves were the first for a UAA team since the 1992-93 season.

On the season, Christianson ranks third in goals-against average among WCHA players overall at 2.45 and owns a .898 saves percentage and 7-7-4 record.

Christianson is the first UAA goalie to garner the weekly honor since Nathan Lawson during the 2006-07 season. Christianson joins three other Seawolves that have received a conference accolade—Kevin Clark, Tommy Grant (twice) and Curtis Leinweber.

Christianson joins the rest of the Seawolves this weekend when they travel to Minnesota-Duluth for their last regular season series on March 6-7

The defending BCHL Champion Penticton Valley First Vees knocked off the Prince George Spruce Kings in five games last night to take the 1st Round series 3-2. The Vees blew a 2-0 series lead but managed to hang on, defeating PG last night 6-4 in front of 1,357 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Derik Johnson, Curtis McKenzie, Devon Krogh, Max Grassi & Ryan Johansen with two goals lead the scoring attack for Penticton. Jordan White made 27 saves picking up the win. Vinny Muchalla, Zach Davies, & Alex Goodship with (2) lead the Spruce Kings scoring in a lossing cause. All-Star goaltender, Kevin Genoe took the loss making 28 saves. Penticton now has just one day off before jumping on the bus for games 1 & 2 Friday & Saturday night in Vernon to face the 1st place Vipers who are coming off a 1st Round Playoff Bye. This will be the 3rd straight year both these two teams have met in the Playoffs.

Former Vernon Lakers forward, Glen Metropolit has been claimed off waivers Friday by the Montreal Canadiens. Metropolit, 34, amassed 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) and served 15 penalty minutes in 55 games with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. Since 1999-2000, Metropolit registered 127 points (39 goals, 88 assists) with a plus-13 rating and 111 penalty minutes in 317 career regular-season games in the NHL with Washington, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia. In 2005-06, the centerman was the National Swiss League’s top scorer with 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in 44 games with the HC Lugano.
