The Math just confirmed what we have realized for weeks, although playoffs were possible it was highly improbable. All year the Vipers have been inconsistent and played a helter skelter style of play. They have struggled to win back to back games so putting together a stretch of 5 wins was just a pipe dream.
It is time for the post mortem on this disappointing season. The Vipers individually played well at times but rarely played as a 5 man unit on the ice. This was very obvious against fast skating teams who play with structure and support each other. I also think poor discipline took Vernon out of a lot of games. Selfish/bad penalties never seemed to have consequences. This all falls on the coaching staff. As a young group I hope they have learned a lot from this season.
Looking forward to next year, I hope the recruited players stay long enough to justify their signing. There appears to be up to 15 players eligible to return but tough choices need to be made in this regard, some of the older players were just not good enough to compete. The honeymoon is over for Cooke and staff, next season's success is 100% on them as they no longer have recruiting or interference from ownership. I am interested to hear other fans comments.
For a team that couldn't win three straight games all season, it was almost impossible for them to win the final five games. I didn't think they would make the playoffs months ago.
A few different spots through out the season that got away from the Vipers and cost them the playoffs. The roster that was put together before training camp and before Matt Coke was hired, wasn't any good and resulted in a poor start to the season. Starting the season 2-10 was a killer. Losing 7 games in overtime, is giving away 7 extra points. And then what ended their season and killed any chance of making the playoffs was coming back from the Christmas break and losing 9 straight games. The Vipers made some poor signings/trades, were inconsistent all season, too many penalties this year cost them a handful of games and yes the hockey was much better then last season, and the team was fun to watch most nights and in a lot of the games but I didn't think the team improved as the season went on as well as a second straight season with over 50 plus players coming and going and no playoffs.
I will give Matt Cooke and the Vipers staff another shot next season. The Vipers roster heading into training camp was already picked by previous management before Matt Cooke was hired, but Matt Cooke also turned over a ton of players through out the season, trying to improve the roster/team and make his own team/roster. If I'm correct the Vipers have a possible fifteen players from this season, that can return for next year. I'm curious to see how the recruiting is and what kind of team Matt Cooke and the Vipers assemble next season. Can the Vipers put together a roster that stays together for most of the season? Or will we continue to see a ton of player turnover?
I have already renewed my season tickets for next season.
Go Vipers Go!
The writing was on the wall. No surprise here. Now its up to Cooke to recruit a team for next year and provide them with the proper coaching so they develop and grow as players. He better get in the playoffs next year
Well everyone has their opinion. I know we haven’t been a good team this season but I’m not jumping off the bandwagon yet I’m giving Cooke a chance still he came into the team late and now has had the experience of handling everything so see what he comes up with next season.
If this league is to make any kind of intelligent decision I hope that the trade deadline goes back to what it used to be Jan 10 rather than Feb 10 which was used to accomodate the NCAA which really has not helped. We as fans need this change.
