The Province article states "Hockey Canada has had stringent rules against such independent or unsanctioned leagues in the past. On its website, it states that any child signing up for an unsanctioned minor hockey league will "immediately lose Hockey Canada membership privileges for the remainder of the hockey season". I have been critical of the Vipers, especially this past year, when we saw a revolving door of players come and go. Many players were "committed" but few got a commitment from the Vipers and were traded or released fairly quickly. Most were never given the time to settle, adjust and play their games. This coming season there appears to be no option within Hockey Canada once the Vipers release them. These players are all in crucial years of their hockey development and certainly can not make a poor decision on where they will be signing. Will the Vipers past practices bite them when signing recruits? Why would players sign if there is no option within Canada?Would the USHL be their only option for the remainder of the year? It will be an interesting year and a huge "commitment" for players to sign in the BCHL. I would imagine there will be a lot of sleepless nights for parents and players. On a different but similar note... where will all the referees and linesmen come from? Sounds like they must be prepared to cut ties with Hockey Canada also. Stay tuned.
Hmmmm, wondering now that the BCHL is no longer under the Hockey Canada umbrella as of June 1, 2023 will they be eligible for the, BCHockey, Mowat Cup in 2024?? I know they are not eligible for the National playdowns, Doyle Cup and Centennial Cup.
I have a relative who is a referee and linesman and he told me they all have a mandatory meeting with Hockey Canada officials on May 25th where they will have to decide on their own personal future. He figures the official's with no aspiration of moving forward with this as a career will join the BCHL and the majority will stay with Hockey Canada
