Seiya Tanaka-Campbell will be back next season. Ironically, late this season, it was decided that he should wait a year and Yale offered Elan Bar-Lev-Wise of West Kelowna a spot for the fall of 2022. Don't know if they were connected or not, but Seiya will remain in Junior A for one more year.
Thanks diehard for all the information throughout the year. I enjoy your posts every day. Vernon has a good group of talented players returning. I look foreward to the next season. I understand you can not win every year and expect the team will make improvements that were lacking this season. Good luck at university to graduating players and thanks for filling the winter with Jr A hockey. I have purchased my tickets already.
It is good news to hear that Seiya will be back. He was injured a lot this year but when in the line up he was a treat to watch. He plays with energy and has a high skill level to match.
Looking at the new recruits it is good to see some quality prospects, albeit on paper. However, recruiting is one thing, the other is forming the talent into a good team. The most important question is whether our current coach can get them on the same page and create a system where they can thrive. In my opinion he has not shown this so far. This year appeared to have players with high skill who seemed unable to play together. It is hard to watch a skilled team play "dump & chase" constantly. West Kelowna displayed how 5 man units should play, with speed, good/mobile defense, a relentless fore check, and utilizing all players on the ice. Our Vipers did not appear to play with anything near WK's cohesiveness and paid the price.
The faithful Viper fans need a good year next year, Mr Glen. If we have recruited well it is time to hold the GM/coaching staff accountable. Give them time to form their team and implement their systems but if the team is as inconsistent as this year you will have to make the necessary business decision. Accountability starts at the top.
The Vipers recorded the third least amount of goals scored, (152) in the league this season, only Powell River and Merritt were worse. Of the so called 11 players returning next season they scored a combined 46 goals this year and 2 players Buss and Pakulak had 26 of these goals. The Vipers need goal scorers and that all comes down to recruiting and making trades. We need to have 20 year old roster spots that are going to be taken by quality players with skill and leadership to take this team back to being the Vipers of old.
