The Vernon Vipers moved into a tie for sixth place in the seven-team B.C. Hockey League Interior Division with a big 4-1 win over the Eagles in Surrey Tuesday.

It was the lone game in the league Tuesday.

The two points gives Vernon (15-16-7-3) 41 points, the same as the Trail Smoke Eaters (16-19-5-3), but the Vipers have two games in hand on the Smokies. Both teams are two points back of the fifth-place Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

The victory also avenged a pair of overtime losses to the Eagles earlier in the season, one at Kal Tire Place, the other at the league’s Showcase tournament in Chilliwack.

Teddy Wooding opened the scoring for Vernon at 11:05, the only goal of the frame, set up by Ryan Upson.

The Vipers extended the lead to 3-0 after 40 minutes on markers from Elan Bar lev wise, from Nicholas Cherkowski and Dylan Anderson, at 6:05, and from Josh Latta on a powerplay at 11:50, with Connor Marritt and Michael Young drawing assists.

Ty Westgard got the home team on the board at 8:50 of the third period before Tylor Ho finished the scoring for the Vipers at 12:39, assists going to Young and Trey Taylor.

Adian Porter made 17 saves for the win in the Vipers goal.

Vernon returns to action Friday when they host Salmon Arm for the final time this season. Game time is 7 p.m. at Kal Tire Place.

The Vipers will host the Powell River Kings Sunday at 2 p.m.

Has anyone else noticed the lack of Viper coverage in the Vernon Morning Star newspaper this hockey season? I sure have. I have really noticed the lack of coverage of our junior hockey team ever since the Morning Star quit putting out papers on Sundays. The coverage on the Vipers was always lacking but I have really noticed it more now without having the Sunday paper. I especially noticed it last week when Wednesday's paper didn't have any write up or article on the Vipers two previous games the weekend before when they hosted Merritt & West Kelowna. In Friday's paper there was no mention of the Vernon-Merritt or Vernon-West Kelowna games and only a short brief write up from the Vipers win in Surrey Tuesday. I know times have changed with the internet and social media etc but you would think the local paper would have fairly in depth coverage on the Vipers through out the season. I sometimes read the Penticton local newspaper and what a difference in sports sections. The Vees are the talk of the town with full game coverage and articles.
