Day 1 Report From Vipers Spring Camp:

I have had season tickets for the past 28 years and been following Junior Hockey in Vernon for close to thirty five years. I have missed only three home games since the 1998-99 season. Here are my thought's from Spring Camp.

I stopped by Kal Tire Place after work to catch the first day of Vipers Spring Prospects Camp. Each game-scrimmage consisted of two twenty five minute periods with a full ice clean in between periods. A penalty was an automatic penalty shot.

I missed the opening game but heard Team Blue defeated Team Black 6-4.

In the second game-scrimmage Team White defeated Team Green 2-1. Team White opened the scoring on a penalty shot. It was tied 1-1 after the 1st period. Team White would get the lone goal of the second frame. Team Green carried the better of the play in the opening period, but it was mostly Team White who carried the play and was the better of the two teams in the second period.

Noah Wagner and Liam Noble scored for Team White. I missed who scored the lone goal for Team Green. Ty Marcinkowski was the lone goaltender for Team White who allowed just one goal, played the entire game. Michael Harroch started for Team Green allowed one goal in the 1st period. Johnny Derrick played goal for Team Green in the 2nd period, didn't allow a single goal.

Players I thought stood out-played well

Team White:

Ty Marcinkowski Didn't see a lot of rubber but played well between the pipes.

Kyler Shmigelsky looked good on the backend. A smooth skating d-man, likes to rush-carry the puck, made some nice plays through out the scrimmage.

George Cathers was one of if not the biggest kid on the ice. Has some size, looked good at times.

Team Green:

Kaiden Johnson looked good at times, showed some speed during the game.

In the third and final game-scrimmage of the evening saw Team Red defeat Team Gold 5-4. This game had a lot more intensity and physical play. The pace and overall speed was more intense compared to the previous scrimmage. Team Red jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 1st before Team Red scored three quick goals in the first two and a half minutes of the 2nd to tie the game early. The opening frame was fairly even at times. Both teams went back and fourth exchanging goals before eventually Team Red would score the winner. Team Gold jumped on Team Red off the opening faceoff and carried a lot of the play early into the final period.

Elvis Gorontzy-Lack, Hunter Beckett, Riker Franczak (2) & Jake McLean scored for Team Red. Cameron Pollock-Hughes, Jackson Koblka, Nico Marini and Dylan Price scoring for Team Gold. Geo Wilson started in goal for Team Red didn't allow a goal in the 1st. Kaleb Mceachern started the 2nd for Team Red allowed four goals. Koltin Dodge started in goal for Team Gold allowed three goals, while Jonathan Holloway allowed two goals in the final frame.

Players I thought stood out-played well

Team Red:

Geo Wilson wasn't the biggest goaltender but quick on his feet. Made some big stops in the opening frame. Played well between the pipes.

Joseph Trifone Has some decent size, can skate and move the puck.

Riker Franczak (2 goals) Showed some skill/talent. This kid can skate, created/generated some quality chances in and around the net. Very smart with the puck, sees the ice well. Was one of the better players on the ice tonight.

Team Gold:

Jarod Yau Has some size, played well on the backend.

Side Notes:

Day two of Spring Camp will continue tomorrow morning at 8am

Former Vernon Vipers captain David Robinson was one of the referee's tonight
