SALMON ARM, DECEMBER 30th, 2017

Just days after making a deal to acquire defenceman Joe Leahy from the Penticton Vees for Marcus Mitchell, Salmon Arm Silverbacks General Manager/Head Coach Scott Atkinson today announced the team has traded 19-year-old forward Josh Latta to the Vernon Vipers for 20-year-old veteran Brandon Whistle.

“Josh was a very good player for us but we are looking to play a bit of a heavier game…A bigger stronger forward fits our game plan more than a smaller speedier guy at this point.”

Whistle who is from West Kelowna BC, played three seasons with the Bonnyville Pontiacs before he joined the Vernon Vipers a month ago. The solid forward has 100 points in 106 career AJHL games. The 6’1 205 pound product is also a former Okanagan Major Midget Rocket who lead that team in scoring in 2014-2015.

The Silverbacks wish Josh all the best with his new team and appreciate his efforts over the past season.

This is a big trade for the Vipers!

Mark Ferner and the Vipers got ripped off on the Brandon Whistle-Adam Panacci trade earlier in the year. Panacci has ten points in thirteen games with Bonnyville.

I really liked Panacci from training camp on. The kid wasn't very big but had wheels, could skate, move the puck up ice in a hurry and score. He only played in thirteen games with the Vipers, was a healthy scratch to start the season, but with injuries jumped into the lineup and played very well before being traded to Bonnyville.

Whistle never really found his grove in Vernon, struggled playing on the 3rd and 4th lines. I never noticed him at all until he finally come to play in a game or two leading up to the holiday break. Once Cameron Trott returned to the Snakes this week, I figured it would be Whistle who would be the odd man out.

I noticed Whistle didn't play in last night's 4-0 win in Salmon Arm was traded after the game. I looked at the boxscore and noticed Josh Latta wasn't in the lineup last night. Was this deal done before the game started? I noticed the Silverbacks announced the trade after the loss last night.

I have to question Scott Atkinson and his two recent trades? Salmon Arm sits last in the Interior Division and have had their troubles scoring the last month or so. So they trade one of their scorers in Marcus Mitchell to Penticton earlier in the week? & then they trade Josh Latta for a 20 yr old forward in Brandon Whitsle? Dosent make sense to me. Did Latta and Mitchell request a trade?

I'm very excited to acquire Josh Latta. Latta always seemed to play very well against Vernon. Not the biggest kid, but has some wheels, can skate, move the puck, put the puck in the net, works hard. I like this trade.

I wonder what the scoop is on Tanner Wishnowski? Left the game October 21st in the 3rd period vs Surrey and hasn't played since. The Vipers are keeping this very quiet and have said nothing about Wishnowski other then hes injured and on the injured reserve. With the trade deadline on January 10th will Wishnowski still be with the Snakes? I watch a lot of Rockets games in Kelowna and loved Wishnowski in a Rockets jersey. I also liked him with the Vipers and think hes a big piece of the puzzle for a championship team. I really like his hard work, gritt, determination and big body. Goes to the net, digs the puck out of the corners and adds that physical presence. Hoping he returns soon.
