The Vernon Vipers have added 19-year-old, high-scoring Brandon Whistle to their B.C. Hockey League roster.

The Snakes have traded the playing rights of rookie forward Adam Panacci to the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in exchange Whistle, who turns 20 in December.

Whistle, a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder out of West Kelowna, was in his third season with the Pontiacs. He has 100 points in 106 career AJHL games. Whistle is also a former Okanagan Major Midget Rocket who led that team in scoring in 2014-2015 with 48 points. His older brother, Jackson, spent four seasons as a goalie with the WHL Kelowna Rockets. He plays pro for the Belfast Giants in Ireland.

Panacci, 18, of Toronto, had two goals in 13 games this season.

“You don’t get these opportunities very often,” said Vipers’ head coach and director of player operations Mark Ferner, moments after a Monday afternoon practice at Kal Tire Place. “It’s always tough to make a trade. We liked Adam, but we’re getting an older guy and a big body who has averaged a point a game for three years. We have a very good group here so we’ll see where he fits in. He played for the Okanagan Rockets so he’s familiar with the area. He’s on his way here and he will be in our lineup tomorrow (Tuesday) night.”

Vernon visits the Langley Rivermen Tuesday night before starting a home and home series Friday with the Penticton Vees. First games goes at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Defencemen Shane Kelly and Sol Seibel join forward Tanner Wishnowski on the Vipers’ injured reserve.

In a separate deal made last week, the Vipers dealt winger Finn Evans to the Ottawa Junior Senators of the CCHL for future considerations. The pair of moves leaves the Vipers one under the BCHL roster limit of 23.

I was a little surprised the Vipers made a big move like this, after how well the season has gone and how well they have been playing lately.

After trading Finn Evans the Vipers had an open roster spot and yet to fill it. With the recent injuries to Shane Kelly, Sol Seibel & Tanner Wishnowski, maybe Mark Ferner thought he needed another veteran body in the lineup, depending how long those three are out of the lineup.

In the games I saw Adam Panacci play, I thought he played well and looked good at times. When the season started, Panacci was a regular healthy scratch due to the 23 man roster. With the Vipers loaded up front, Panacci was one of three odd men out of the lineup. It wasn't until Tanner Wishnowski went down with an injury, Panacci was playing on a regular basis.

I like the sounds of Brandon Whistle. Hes got some size, a point a game player, a three year AJHL veteran who has put up good numbers with Bonnyville. Hes also a local kid (West Kelowna). I'm excited to see him play and what he brings to the Viper roster. I saw Brandon's older brother Jackson play goal with the Kelowna Rockets a few years ago.

I wish Adam all the best in Bonnyville.
