Cleaves attended the Montreal Canadiens Development Camp in July. 

Cleaves spent the 2025-26 season at Dartmouth College. Cleaves & Dartmouth College won the ECAC Hockey Championship in March. In 30 games, Cleaves collected (4-goals-6-assists-10-points).

Cleaves was selected in the third round, 93rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens at the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

Cleaves split the 2024-25 season with the Vernon Vipers and the United States Hockey League Green Bay Gamblers.

Cleaves played parts of two seasons with the 2023-24 Vernon Vipers and the 2024-25 Vernon Vipers. Cleaves started the 2023-24 season with the Vernon Vipers, played in 6 games before returning to his high school team for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. Cleaves committed to the Vernon Vipers January 17th 2024 for the 2024-25 season, left the team in December 2024 for the United States Hockey League Green Bay Gamblers. In 35 games with the Vipers, Cleaves collected (3-goals-13-assists-16-points).

I have had season tickets since 1990 and missed 46 home games since. My family watched senior men's hockey in Vernon in the 1950's and has been watching/following junior hockey in Vernon since Vernon got a team in 1961. I have two family members that played junior hockey in Vernon. I have programs and ticket stubs from every game since 1988. I worked with the Vipers as colour commentator for a few home games during the 2002-03 season and in 2011 I helped create/design the Vipers website that I was in charge of for five seasons.

1st Period: Both teams were pretty evenly matched as it was pretty even for most of the period. I thought the Vipers had a slight edge in play and had a few more scoring chances. Vernon generated several quality opportunities, were skating hard, moving the puck well, played well. The Snakes come close to opening the scoring after a shot off the post. The visiting Smoke Eaters also played well, had some looks/chances. Both goaltenders were forced to make a couple of big stops. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 11-11.

Game Recap - Preseason - Salmon Arm Silverbacks 5 Vernon Vipers 2

I was at tonight's Vernon Vipers-Salmon Arm Silverbacks game as the Silverbacks won 5-2 in front of a very small crowd at Kal Tire Place. (No attendance was announced) 

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon Vipers: Lane Maarhuis

Salmon Arm Silverbacks: Noah Mavin

1st Period: The visiting Silverbacks got the early jump on the Snakes and would open the scoring less then two minutes into the hockey game. The Gorillas got off to a good start and were the better team early. The Vipers would quickly re-group and eventually take over the edge in play and were the better team for most of the remainder of the opening frame. Vernon would carrier the better of the play, had the puck on their stick more, had more zone time and sustained pressure but unable to find the back of the net. The Vipers were up in shots 8-3 at on point. Salmon Arm would come on strong late and end the period on a strong note. The Silverbacks didn't have a whole lot of puck possession, seemed to be chasing the puck and the play, saw a lot of the period in their own end. SA had some early pressure and zone time early and towards the end of the period, otherwise the Vipers were the better of the two teams. It was 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 8-3 Vernon.

1st Period: I thought both teams were pretty even for most of the opening frame. The Vipers got off to a good start, with some early forecheck and pressure in the offensive zone. I thought Salmon Arm was the better team in the first half, had a little more edge in play, had a little more zone time, more puck possession and had the better of the opportunities. The Apes looked to even the score at 2-2 but the goal was waived off with no explanation. Richard Wonyeneh was stopped on a penalty shot. The Snakes were the better team in the second half, had more puck possession, more time in the offensive zone and the better of the scoring chances. Both goaltenders played well, both made a couple of strong saves. It was 2-1 Vernon after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 15-9 Silverbacks.

I was at this afternoon's Vernon Vipers/West Kelowna Warriors game as the Warriors won 5-2 in front of a good sized crowd at Royal Le Page Place. (No attendance was announced)

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon Vipers: Samuel Diblasi
West Kelowna Warriors: Ethan Sawyer

1st Period: The hometown Warriors jumped on the Vipers early and were by far the better team in the opening frame. The Tribe carried the better of the play for most of the period. West Kelowna was skating, physical, moving the puck, generating offence, were hard on the puck and winning the battles. The Warriors scored twice on their first two shots and looked pretty good in the teams first preseason game. The Vipers didn't get off to a good start and just couldn't recover. The Snakes saw a lot of action in their own end, looked slow and sluggish this afternoon. The Vipers struggled defensively, were slow moving or getting the puck out of their own end, took way too many penalties, struggled offensively, didn't get any real sustained pressure in the offensive zone, had a couple of good shifts but otherwise played most of the 1st period in their own end. It was 3-1 Warriors after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 10-6 West Kelowna.

Day 3 Report From Vernon Vipers Training Camp:

I stopped by Kal Tire Place this afternoon to check out the final scrimmage from training camp.

Each scrimmage is three twenty minute periods with running time and an ice cleaning between each period.

Team Kraus (Green) defeated Team Crowell (White) 6-5 in overtime in front of a small group of fans in attendance. Team Crowell held a 5-2 lead heading into the 3rd period with Team Kraus tying the game with 22 seconds remaining.

From what I saw over the long weekend, I noticed the talent and skill level seems to be much better then some of the past previous training camps.

Ty Raap 09 Is tall but lanky but played well on the blueline today

Sloan Kroeker 08 Isn't the biggest kid but caught my attention and played well

Jed Lake 07 Impressed me, has some hands, can move the puck up ice and has some skill

Roman Lavery 08 who was recently signed by the Vipers, I thought looked good and played good

Liam Magnuson 07 returning from last season, had a goal and was denied on a breakaway, played well at both ends of the rink

Jake Romanov Latawiec 08 Looked good on the blueline. Likes to move the puck

Josh Denes 08 Has really impressed me all camp and one of the more skilled forwards. This kid can skate, move the puck, has soft hands and a ton of skill

Jack Carter 07 I thought made a couple of big stops, played well in goal

Today is the final day of training camp before the Vipers open the 2026 preseason September 7th in West Kelowna.

I picked up the new Vipers gear yesterday from the office.

Talented BCHL, Brick tourney alum Erickson, who led Simon Fraser in scoring last season, joins Griffins - MacEwan University Griffins

Erickson spent the past three seasons at Simon Fraser University.

Erickson played parts of one season in Vernon with the 2022-23 Vernon Vipers. The Merritt Centennials traded Erickson to the Vernon Vipers January 10th 2023 for future considerations. In 21 games, Erickson collected (7-goals-5-assists-12-points).

Day 2 Report From Vernon Vipers Training Camp:

I stopped by Kal Tire Place this morning to check out the Vipers training camp. 

Each scrimmage is three twenty minute periods with running time and an ice cleaning between periods.

The one and only scrimmage of the morning saw Team Kraus (Green) defeat Team Crowell (White) 3-2 in a shootout in a front of a much smaller crowd then yesterday.

Several players caught my attention this morning as a few players stood out. It looks like the Vipers have recruited some kids that show signs of skill

Oscar Bjork returning from last season saw a lot of ice and stood out, played very well

David Contreras from the Anaheim Jr. Ducks impressed me a lot. This kid is scrappy, plays hard, competes, never stops skating, always involved and engaged in the play and likes to really muck it up

Max Alexander who was recently signed was another defenceman that impressed me and stood out today

Josh Denes isn't the biggest kid but quick on his feet, very shifty and creative with the puck, showed a lot of skill

Training camp finishes tomorrow with two scrimmages at 8:30am and 1pm

Cleaves recently attended the Montreal Canadiens Development Camp in July. 

Cleaves spent the 2025-26 season at Dartmouth College. Cleaves & Dartmouth College won the ECAC Hockey Championship in March. In 30 games, Cleaves collected (4-goals-6-assists-10-points).

Cleaves was selected in the third round, 93rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens at the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

Cleaves split the 2024-25 season with the Vernon Vipers and the United States Hockey League Green Bay Gamblers.

Cleaves played parts of two seasons with the 2023-24 Vernon Vipers and the 2024-25 Vernon Vipers. Cleaves started the 2023-24 season with the Vernon Vipers, played in 6 games before returning to his high school team for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. Cleaves committed to the Vernon Vipers January 17th 2024 for the 2024-25 season, left the team in December 2024 for the United States Hockey League Green Bay Gamblers. In 35 games with the Vipers, Cleaves collected (3-goals-13-assists-16-points).
