Hicks is in his first season at the University of Denver. In 21 games this season, Hicks went 16-0-1 with 3 shutouts and a 1.19 GAA

Hicks had previously committed to Tennessee State University for the 2025-26 season.

Hicks split the 2024-25 season with the Brooks Bandits & Western Hockey League Victoria Royals.

Hicks played two seasons with the Merritt Centennials before signing with the Alberta Junior Hockey League Brooks Bandits for the 2023-24 season. The Merritt Centennials traded the BCHL Playing Rights of Johnny Hicks to the Vernon Vipers January 10th 2024 for future considerations. At the time of the trade, Hicks was playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Brooks Bandits. Hicks never reported to Vernon. Hicks and the Bandits eventually joined the BCHL January 20th 2024. Hicks played parts of two seasons with the Brooks Bandits before joining the Western Hockey League Victoria Royals.

A hockey player who is acquired by a team via trade or signing but never plays a single regular-season game for them is commonly referred to in several ways, often with a hint of irony or as a trivia fact:

Here is the press release on the Vernon Vipers-Hicks trade from January 10th 2024
