After the Buzzer – Vipers Drop 5-1 Decision in Trail
January 17, 2020
Trail, BC: Landon Fuller had a goal and a spirited scrap as the Vernon Vipers dropped a 5-1 decision on the road in Trail on Friday night.
The Vipers had a good start to the game, but couldn’t get any traction. Ben Helgeson set himself up for two great looks, but was robbed on the first then missed net on the second. The Smokies would take the lead a few minutes later as Kent Johnson went top shelf from in tight on Keegan Karki to make it 1-0. The Vipers 2nd powerplay of the game netted them their first goal as Landon Fuller deflected home a shot from Christian Felton for his 9th of the season. The tie was short lived as Michael Collela pounced on a puck at the side of the net after it hit a couple of legs making it 2-1 Trail 26 seconds later. That was the way the first period would end.
The Vipers continued to get looks, but had trouble testing Terness. Matt Kowalski had a good look, but the puck appeared to go up on end and he ripped it up high. The Vipers had some chances on the powerplay but the powerplay had trouble getting traction. The Smokies jumped on a very fortunate Cominco bounce as a puck was cleared up the glass, but hit something and bounced right to the right side where the Smokies set up Kent Johnson on the back door to make it 3-1. Dawson Holt nearly got the game within 1, but missed the net up high on another Cominco bounce that went to the front of the net.
In the third it was a tight defensive chess match. The Vipers had good jump, but couldn’t solve Terness. Landon Fuller would find himself in a spirited scrap with Powell Connor as both guys landed some good shots. The Smokies would add 2 more after that as Philippe Lapointe and Carson Briere finished off a couple of odd man rushes midway through the period to make the final score 5-1.
The Vipers are back in action Sunday afternoon at 2pm when the Salmon Arm Silverbacks come to town.
I watched the Vipers game online tonight. I thought the Vipers held there own and played very well in an entertaining and exciting 1st period. The Snakes were a different team in the middle frame, were outplayed and only managed three shots on goal. A late goal gave Trail a 3-1 lead seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the Vipers and they never really responded. In the 3rd Vernon had a few looks/chances ended up giving up two goals as the Smoke Eaters put the game away in the final twenty minutes. The Vipers didn't play anywhere near close to sixty minutes vs a very tough Smokies team. Going 1-6 with the man advantage isn't going to win you many hockey games. A disappointing game/loss vs a Trail team the Vipers are chasing in the standings. Heading into tonight's matchup, Vernon was nine points back with three games in hand. The Vipers lose all three games in Trail this season. The Vipers have lost back to back games, have lost seven of there last eleven games. Vernon remains 3rd in the Interior division with a 23-18-2-1 record
Cant take the bad play of the Vipers and the ineptitude of the coach! Gave my tickets for the rest of the season to my neighbor and wont buy seasons again until something drastically changes!
Who knew the vipers were responsible for people’s happiness 😬... enjoy the game for what it is.. yea I don’t agree with how the coach does things, but don’t punish the young men for lack of leadership behind the bench. We are fortunate to have Jr A hockey to watch. The turn over is very high so, why not try to leave a positive impression on the players short stay, then acting like spoiled brats!
Landon Fuller vs Powell Connor good scrap last night..probably the only positive out of the game for Vernon. Its a shame 2 good players got tossed ..terrible rule. Check out You Tube to watch
Blah blah if you're so over it quit talking about it
Oh your one of those fans! You probably never missed a game when the Vipers were winning rbc cups but now after a few losing seasons and a new coach/ownership your going to quit going to games? Good riddance, don't come back!
Jim your one of the sheep who walks through the gate, Glen counts on you to put up with bad hockey to fill his pockets! Baaaaaaa!
Would you like me to only go through the gate when the team is winning and stay home when they are losing?
Mr.Anonymous....Your neighbour will appreciate your kindness, he will be watching a team that is sitting 3rd, in the toughest division of JR.A hockey in Canada. Can’t see anything drastic going to happen for the remainder of the season...You and your negativity should stay at home, the rest of us will enjoy the Vipers....win or lose !!
Viper fans are spoiled
Some are spoiled. Some feel they are fortunate that they've been fans of a team that's been successful over decades. Vernon won six national championships during the Mel Lis/Duncan Wray years. Can the Glens carry on this success? We don't know yet. They might own the team for a few years and then sell. We don't know yet. Jason McKee had contenders most years in Spruce Grove. Can he recruit out of Edmonton like he did over there? We don't know yet. But over the past 30 years, we've seen a lot of successful teams.
Part of being a fan is going to the games and finding out. And hoping they improve. What are ya gonna do? Stay home?
Exactly Mr Mcinnes.. not to mention they make a killer crispy chicken burger and poutine!! 👍
