Rick Lanz has joined the Vernon Vipers scouting staff.
No official press release from the Vipers, but Lanz is listed as a scout in the Vipers program.
Drafted 7th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, Lanz spent parts of eleven seasons in the NHL with three different teams (Vancouver, Toronto & Chicago).
After retiring from the National Hockey League in 1993 Lanz got behind the bench and got his first coaching gig as an assistant coach with the 1994-95 Penticton Panthers. Lanz would be named the Head Coach of the Langley Thunder in 1995. From 1994 to 2007 Lanz was either an assistant coach or Head Coach/GM of the Penticton Panthers, Langley Thunder, Surrey Eagles, Tri-City Americans, Langley Hornets, Victoria Grizzlies and Burnaby/Coquitlam Express. Lanz and the Burnaby Express won the 2006 Royal Bank Cup. Lanz went back to the NHL in 2007 where he was a scout with the Colorado Avalanche from 2007-2016 before re-joining the Surrey Eagles for one season in 2016 as an assistant coach. Lanz has spent the past two seasons coaching with Delta Academy Prep school.
Rick Lanz and former Vernon Vipers Head Coach/GM Mark Holick helped guide the South Surrey Eagles to the Royal Bank Cup finals in 1997. Holick and Lanz are brother in law's. Holick was Head Coach/GM of the 2006-07 Vernon Vipers before leaving the following season for the Western Hockey League Kootenay Ice. Holick left the Vipers in his second season, for the Ice a week before the Vipers training camp during the 2007-08 season.
