I have had season tickets for the past 29 years and been watching junior hockey in Vernon for over thirty five years. I have missed four Vipers home games since the 2004-05 season and eighteen Vipers home games since the 1999-2000 season. Here are my thought's and view's from today's Spring Camp.
I stopped by Kal Tire Place North this morning and watched the final day of Spring Camp. Each game/scrimmage is two thirty minute non-stop running periods, with a full ice clean between periods. A penalty is an automatic penalty shot. Teams go down to four on four in the 2nd period.
In the first game/scrimmage this morning saw Team Green defeat Team Black 6-4 in front of about fifty or sixty fans in attendance. I thought both teams were fairly even in the 1st period. It was 1-1 after the opening frame. Cam MacDonald & Tyler Chyzowski were both denied on 1st period penalty shots. Team Black with a few quick goals opened up a 4-1 lead before Team Green stormed back with five straight goals to earn the win. Jakob Jones scored the game winner with about two minutes left in the game/scrimmage. Jack Glen was stopped on a second period penalty shot.
Starting Goaltenders:
Team Green:
Ashton Billesberger (Started the game, allowed one goal)
Kyle Kozma (Started the 2nd period, allowed three goals)
Team Black:
Ross Hawryluk (Started the game, allowed one goal)
Cayden Hamming (Played the 2nd period, allowed five goals)
Team Green Scoring:
Noah Bourassa
Garth "Buddy" Johnson
Kerfella Toure
Ethan Urquhart
Jakob Jones
Finn Walker
Team Black Scoring:
Christopher Reinhardt
Jack Glen (Penalty shot)
Caleb Petrie
Andrew Berkelaar
Players I thought stood out-Played well
Team Green:
Kerfella Toure (1 goal) Has impressed me so far during camp. A bigger body, is physical, hard on pucks, can skate and offensive minded.
Team Black:
Nicholas Kent Is another kid/defenceman that has impressed me during Spring Camp this weekend. A very good smooth skating d-man, can move and carry the puck, quick, plays well at both ends of the rink, jumps up into the play, gets involved in the play and good defensively.
In the second game/scrimmage of the morning saw Team Gold defeat Team Blue 7-6 in a wild game. Team Gold jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Team Blue tied the game before the end of the 1st period. It was basically a shoot out in the 2nd period as both teams went back and fourth as the lead changed hands several times in the final period. Xavier Cannon made a huge glove save inside the final minute off a penalty shot, was then forced to make several large saves in the dying seconds to preserve the "W". Graham Skinner was stopped on a 1st period penalty shot, while James Gibson was also stopped on a 2nd period penalty shot. Team Gold scored four of their seven goals on penalty shots. Team Gold outscored Team Blue 5-4 in the 2nd period to come away with the 7-6 victory in the highest scoring game of the weekend.
Starting Goaltenders:
Team Blue:
Kobe Grant (Started for Team Blue, allowed two goals)
Lachlan Griffin (Played the 2nd period, allowed five goals)
Team Gold:
Tanner Johnson (Started the game, allowed two goals)
Xavier Cannon (Played the final period, allowed four goals)
Team Blue Scoring:
Curtis Hammond (2 goals)
Tristan Zandee
Jack Steffens
Tyler Evans (2 goals-One on a penalty shot)
Team Gold Scoring:
Carter Belitski (penalty shot)
Kaden Dempsey (penalty shot)
Tyler Hill (2 goals)
Adam Kydd
Bryan Brew (penalty shot)
Brandon Cleet (penalty shot)
Players I thought stood out-Played well
Team Blue:
Curtis Hammond (2 goals) I thought had a strong game/scrimmage, played well in the loss.
Justin Nakagawa The kid from San Diego from what I was told, has some wheels, can really move. Isnt the biggest kid but quick, can move the puck-crerate/generate opportunities. Played well this morning and yesterday.
Team Gold:
Brandon Cleet (1 goal) Scored on a penalty shot, has taken at least three or four penalty shots over the weekend, caught my attention this weekend. Played well again this morning.
Xavier Cannon Allowed four goals in the 2nd and final period but was solid between the pipes down the stretch, making a big stop on a penalty shot inside the final minute and then was forced to make some large saves in the dying seconds.
In the third and final game/scrimmage this afternoon saw Team White defeat Team Red 6-3 in front of around 60 fans. Team White jumped out to a 4-0 1st period lead and cruised to a 6-3 victory in the final scrimmage of Spring Camp. Team White was by far the better of the two teams and it showed for most of the game. Team Red with two quick back to back goals, scored all three goals in the second and final period of the afternoon. Kaleb McHugh & Sean Michalevich were both stopped on 1st period penalty shots. Ethan O'Rourke scored the goal of the weekend.
Starting Goaltenders:
Team Red:
Gabriel Murrells-Allaway (Started the game, allowed 4 goals)
Tenzin Mint (Played the 2nd period, allowed two goals)
Team White:
Blake Wood (Started the game, didn't allow a goal)
Johnn Derrick (Played the 2nd period, allowed three goals)
Team Red Scoring:
Brett Fudger
Kye Whillans
Parker Bell
Team White Scoring:
Kaleb McHugh
Ty Toews
Jojo Tanaka-Campbell
Ethan O'Rourke (2 goals)
Hudson Foley
Players I thought stood out-Played well
Team Red:
Brett Fudger (1 goal & 1 assist) Looked very good for Team Red. Was physical, quick on his feet, played well at both ends of the arena, consistent all afternoon.
Aiden Robson Played fairly well on the blueline.
Team White:
Blake Wood started the game for Team White, I thought was very good, was forced to make a few saves with Team Red pressuring. Not the biggest goaltender but quick on his feet, very mobile.
Brett Moravec I thought had some wheels, can move, made some nice plays in the offensive zone.
Jojo Tanaka-Campbell Was another forward who played well for most of the afternoon.
Here are some pictures I took during today's camp
