Vipers acquire huge forward
The Vernon Vipers have added a Finn to their roster.
The Vipers have acquired forward Finn Evans, 19, from the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in exchange for future considerations.
Evans recorded 22 goals and 54 points in 46 games last season, as well as nine points in seven playoff games.
The product of Toronto has already secured a scholarship with the NCAA Princeton University Tigers for next season.
The 6-foot-4, 190 pound winger was also a member of Team Canada East during the World Junior A Challenge last season.
Viper head coach/director of player personnel Mark Ferner said Evans wanted to be closer to his parents, who just moved to San Jose. He joins Viper d-man Michael Ufberg as a Princeton recruit.
Ferner said the Buzzers’ president, GM/coach Rich Ricci was counting on Evans to be the team’s captain this season. Evans was rated 129th by NHL Central Scouting prior to the June amateur lottery in Chicago.
“He didn’t get drafted but sometimes it’s just teams don’t have the picks and they have other needs,” said Ferner. “Certainly, we did a lot of homework on him and we’re pretty happy to have him. He’s another big body with pretty good skills.”
Evans is expected to arrive in Vernon later this week or early next week.
The B.C. Hockey League squad began its training camp Monday morning at Kal Tire Place. The team’s annual Blue-White game is slated for Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Kal Tire Place.
The Vipers begin their pre-season schedule with a home-and-home against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. The two teams meet Friday (7 p.m.) at Kal Tire Place, and again Saturday at the Shaw Centre.
