Vipers trade Rizzolo to Dawgs

Sep 29, 2016

The Vernon Vipers have traded defenceman Darren Rizzolo to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in exchange for future considerations.

Head coach and director of hockey operations Mark Ferner was forced to make a move as second-year forward Brett Stapley is set to come off the injured reserve list.

Rizzolo is an 18-year-old Mission product who compiled three goals and 10 points in 45 games last year with the Snakes.

The move now leaves the Vernon roster at 22 as they begin a three-game road trip Friday night in Powell River against the Kings. The Vipers still have room for one 20-year-old and one import.

The Vipers face the Bulldogs Saturday night in Port Alberni and then battle the Clippers in a Sunday matinee in Nanaimo. Vernon entertains the Surrey Eagles in their next home tilt, Friday, Oct. 7.

Last year the Vipers had one of if not the smallest team in the league. There defence wasn't overly big and was pushed around often. This year the Vipers have beefed up on the blueline by adding some size. Gone are now Callum Volpe and Darren Rizzolo who both played last year, both no the biggest defencemen but were pushed around last season. You kind of had to figure both wouldn't be back this year or they were going to be shipped out for someone with size and a little more mobility. I think with Rizzolo off on a scholarship next season, the Vipers were able to trade him and now try and mold a young Sol Seibel.
