Vernon 4 West Kelowna 3 (Overtime)

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated West Kelowna 4-3 in overtime in front of 1,789 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Danny Todosychuk
West Kelowna:  Tyler Briggs

1st Period:  In the opening minute Colton Sparrow with a great chance from the slot just fired high and over the net.  Both teams with good jump early went back and forth with not alot of great scoring chances.  Danny Todosychuk made a nice pad save early off Reid Simmonds down low.  Five minutes into the frame Brendan Persley setup Andrew Tegeler who setup Colton Sparrow who walked in from the circle but couldnt beat Warriors starting goaltender Tyler Briggs on a nice passing play by the Vipers.  Both teams were evenly matched in the first half before Vernon would open the scoring at the midway mark after Aaron Hadley who played very well tonight setup Adam Tambellini on a nice goal giving the Vipers a 1-0 lead at 10:04 Hadley with the lone helper on the play.  The Vipers thought they jumped out to a 2-0 lead just seconds later after TJ Dumonceaux scored but the referee and linesmen got together waiving off the goal as a Vernon player was in the crease.  Just seconds later West Kelowna would get the games first powerplay.  Danny Todosychuk made a few nice saves as Vernon's penalty kill was good killing off the minor.  The Warriors would get their second man advantage late and capitalized off the draw in the Vernon end.  Shawn Hochhausen won the draw, setup David Pope for the quick one timer who ripped his shot topshelf past Todosychuk tying the game 1-1 at 18:14 Hochhausen with the assist.  Not alot of scoring chances in the opening frame as West Kelowna had the slight edge in play.  The game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.  The Warriors outshot the Vipers 16-13.

2nd Period:  Just twenty four seconds into the middle frame Andrew Tegeler would get a parcial breakaway but couldnt beat Tyler Briggs who stayed with Tegeler shutting the door.  Brett Zarazun would get called for hooking giving Vernon their first shot with the man advantage.  A strong penalty kill by the Warriors would kill off the minor before the Vipers would jump right back to the powerplay after another West Kelowna penalty early to start the 2nd period.  Again Vernon wasnt able to capitalize as the Warriors killed off back to back penalties.  Former Vipers forward Marcus Basara with a nice move in the slot just missed the far corner on a quick heads up play in close couldnt break the tie.  On the same play the Vipers fed Brendan Persley for the parcial breakaway who couldnt get a shot off after a nice defensive play by the West Kelowna d-man.  The play and game then really slowed down with several turnovers and bouncing pucks for a few minutes.  Again not alot of scoring chances in this period.  The Vipers would get their third powerplay of the period late but again couldnt capitalize.  It was still tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.  Vernon outshot West Kelowna 10-4.

3rd Period:  Logan Mick would get a good chance early coming down the left wing ripping a hard low shot that was stopped by Tyler Briggs who made a nice left pad save with no Viper in front for the rebound.  Just 3:12 into the final frame West Kelowna grabbed their first lead of the night after a carbon copy of the Warriors first goal.  Shawn Hochhausen won the draw deep in the Vernon zone setting up David Pope off the draw who for the second time tonight went topshelf beating Todosychuk giving the Warriors the 2-1 lead.  Hochhausen with the only assist on the goal.  But the Vipers come right back with a hard working shift off the faceoff, Liam Board and Adam Tambellini both going to the net but Tyler Briggs shut the door on Liam Board who was robbed alone in the slot.  The Vipers would then get an early powerplay and finally capitalize after Brett Corkey's point shot was redirected in front by Aaron Hadley whos shot just snuck through the pads of Briggs tying the game 2-2 at 5:42 Corkey & Dexter Dancs collected the assists.  But less then a minute later Geoff Crisfield would get tossed from the game for checking from behind giving West Kelowna a powerplay where the Warriors would retake the lead.  David Pope snuck through the slot waited before dishing off to an open Seb Lloyd who hit the open cage at 7:34 Pope & Warriors captain Max French with the helpers.  Just a few minutes later Vernon would get a man advantage but a strong penalty kill by the Warriors.  Max French then tried setting up Brennan Clark on a Warriors two on one but Clark couldnt connect on the pass.  West Kelowna would get another shot with the man advantage trying to go ahead by two but Vernon would kill off the penalty before Aaron Hadley's great indivdual effort would tie the game late after going topshelf over Briggs at 15:59 Hadley's second goal of the night was unassisted.  The Vipers with the better of the play and had the better scoring opportunities would finish tied 3-3 after 60 minutes of play.  Shots were even 10-10.

Overtime:  With four on four both teams opened up the play with chances at both ends of the rink.  The Vipers best chance came after captain Brett Corkey carried the play in across the Warriors blueline before setting up Andrew Tegeler who then tried setting up Corkey on a nice passing play.  Ryan Renz who just about coughed up the puck at the blueline carried the puck in along the boards before cutting hard towards the net slid the puck in through Tyler Briggs fivehole giving the Vipers the 4-3 OT victory as the Vernon bench erupted as the Vipers poured onto the ice.  Renz's goal was unassisted.  Vernon outshot West Kelowna 4-1.

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Aaron Hadley (2 goals & 1 assist) Played a strong game for Vernon.  Hadley who seems to come and go played with alot of hustle and determination tonight really carried the Vipers this evening.  Hadley who was really skating hard and driving to the net was rewarded with two goals.

Logan Mick played a strong game for the second straight night.  Just like last night Mick was hustling and working hard all night.  Played physical too laying out some big checks tonight.

Andrew Tegeler who hasnt stood out much latley played well tonight.  I thought Tegeler looked good most of the night, generating and creating a few chances.

Colton Sparrow who played very well for the second straight game looked good tonight.  I didnt notice the Vernon product as much in the 3rd and OT but played very well in the first two periods.

Danny Todosychuk (28 saves)  Was very sharp in the Vernon net tonight.  The Vernon kid looked very solid-confident between the pipes making some good saves through out tonight, especially in the opening period.  Todosychuk has really improved on his rebound control from last season.

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

After a dissapointing 4-2 loss in Salmon Arm last night the Vipers returned home with a pretty good effort tonight coming away with the 4-3 OT win.  The Vipers have now won nine straight over West Kelowna at home.  Tonight was a pretty good hockey game, I thought both teams didnt get or generate alot of scoring chances in the first two periods but the play and chances started to come in the 3rd and into overtime.  Give Vernon credit they fell down 2-1 early into the 3rd battled back to tie the game before going down a goal again.  This team didnt quit tonight, battled hard and earned the two points.  With a Silverbacks 3-3 tie at home over Cowichan Valley tonight the Vipers are still six points back of Salmon Arm for the 4th and final playoff spot.

Top Players:  (West Kelowna)

Matthew Berry-Lamontagna played very well defensively for the Warriors.

David Pope (2 goals & 1 assist) Was by far the Warriors go to guy tonight.  Pope with two quick releases from the draw went topshelf.  Very good skater and creative with the puck.

Shawn Hochhausen (2 assists)  Was very good on the draw, played well through out tonight's game.

Brett Zarazun also played well on the West Kelowna backend.

Tyler Briggs (33 saves)  Didnt have alot of huge saves to make but played well between the pipes.

Game Thoughts:  (West Kelowna)

West Kelowna's last win in Vernon was a 3-1 victory back on January 23rd 2010  After a 8-1 win over Cowichan Valley last night the Warriors didnt generate alot of offence tonight.  The Warriors played well but I didnt notice alot of their top players shine like in previous Vernon-West Kelowna games.  The Warriors didnt seem to crash or go to the net as in previous games vs Vernon.  I thought West Kelowna was good on the draw and did pretty good with the man advantage.  West Kelowna did have some key players out of the lineup tonight, some guys that play hard and get under your skin, I thought they were missing some of that grit tonight, they usally show in previous games vs the Vipers.
