The Okanagan Cup semifinals begin this weekend with the 3-6-1-2 Vernon Vipers travelling to West Kelowna to face the 7-4-0-1 Warriors Friday night at Royal Le Page Place.

Warriors Name Former Vernon Viper Bar-Lev-Wise Alternate Captain:

The West Kelowna Warriors named their leadership group on November 5th

2020. Wyllum Deveaux was named captain while former Vernon Vipers forward Elan Bar-Lev-Wise is one of three Warriors named alternate captain.

Bar-Lev-Wise played two games as an affiliated player "AP" with the 2016-17 Salmon Arm Silverbacks before committing to the Vernon Vipers October 10th 2017. Bar-Lev-Wise would join the Vipers November 3rd 2017 played four games with the 2017-18 Vernon Vipers before joining the team full time the following season. Bar-Lev-Wise played parts of two seasons in Vernon (2018-2020) before being traded to West Kelowna. The Vipers traded Bar-Lev-Wise & future considerations to West Kelowna January 10th 2020 for Max Bulawka. In 95 games with the Vipers Bar-Lev-Wise collected (8-goals-27-assists-35-points).

The Story Of Lyman (Hick) Abbott:

This is the story of Lyman (Hick) Abbott, a fine, young athlete who lost

his life in the first World War and the story about the Abbott Cup. 

The Vernon Lakers - Vernon Vipers won the Abbott Cup four times (1989, 1991, 1992 & 1999) 

Lyman (Hick) Abbott was remembered June 13th 2014 when he was among the 2014 inductees into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in Regina. Abbott's first World War medals were entered into the Hockey Hall of Fame December 14th 2014.

The Abbott Memorial Cup, commonly referred to as the Abbott Cup, was awarded annually from 1919 through 1999 to the Junior "A" Champion for Western Canada was awarded following a round-robin game between the two Western teams at the Centennial Cup. The last Junior A Hockey team to win the Abbott Cup was the 1998-99 Vernon Vipers. 

The Cup was named after Captain E.L. (Hick) Abbott who was a noted hockey player in Western Canada. He captained the Regina Victorias when it won the Junior Championship of Canada in 1913 & 1914. Captain Abbott died in active service in the first World War and the trophy was presented in his memory in 1919 by the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association.

The concept of a Western Canada Junior "A" Championship continued in 2013 with the creation of the Western Canada Cup that ended in 2017. Hockey Canada scrapped the Western Canada Cup following the 2017 Tournament and re-instated the Anavet Cup & Doyle Cup starting with the 2017-18 season.

Ex Vipers Goaltender Shortridge Becomes Free Agent:

Former Vernon Vipers goaltender has become a free agent after the San Jose

Sharks didn't offer the goaltender a qualifying contract.

Shortridge played last season in the American Hockey League with the San Jose Barracuda and the ECHL with the Allen Americans. In 14 games with the Barracuda Shortridge went 3-7 with a 3.71 GAA In 10 games with the Americans Shortridge went 4-4-1 with a 2.81 GAA

After three years at Quinnipiac University Shortridge signed a one year contract with the San Jose Sharks April 3rd 2019 & an amateur tryout contract with the AHL San Jose Barracuda April 3rd 2019. 

Shortridge played one season in Vernon (2015-16) In 44 games with the Vipers Shortridge went 19-25 with two shutouts posting a 3.15 GAA

Here are the Vipers/Silverbacks game highlight's from October 31st 2020. The hometown Vernon Vipers held a 1-0 lead going into the 3rd period, before Hunter Sansbury tied the game at 13:31 on the power play. No scoring in overtime. Carter Loney scored the only goal of the shootout giving the Salmon Arm Silverbacks a 2-1 shootout victory at Kal Tire Place. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 31-19. Riley Kohonick made 30 saves in the win, while Koen MacInnes made 17 saves in the loss.
