After winning a record third straight Doyle Cup the Vernon Vipers will be making their record 9th trip to the Centennial Cup-Royal Bank Cup and a chance at becoming the first Junior hockey team in history to win three straight National Championships.
Over the next few days and leading up to the 2011 Royal Bank Cup I thought I would take a look back and go through each of the years and give a recap on all of Vernon's previous eight trip's to the National Championship starting with the Vernon Vipers eighth appearence at the 2010 Royal Bank Cup wich was hosted by the Dauphin Kings.
The Vernon Vipers finished with with a record of 51-6-0-3 top spots in the Interior Division & #1 overall in the BCHL. Here’s a rundown on how the Vipers did through out the BCHL’s Playoffs to advance to the teams record eighth National Championship.

The 2010 Royal Bank Cup was the Junior "A" 2010 ice hockey National Championship for the Canadian Junior Hockey League. The 2010 Royal Bank Cup marked the 40th consecutive year a national championship has been awarded to this skill level since the breakaway of Major Junior hockey in 1970.
The Royal Bank Cup was competed for by the winners of the Doyle Cup, Anavet Cup, Dudley Hewitt Cup, the Fred Page Cup and the host city, the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
The tournament was hosted by the Dauphin Kings and ran from May 1 to May 9 of 2010 with games played at the Credit Union Place in Dauphin, Manitoba.[1] Charlie Major will be appearing as a special guest the night before the opening game.[2]
In the end, the defending 2009 Royal Bank Cup champion Vernon Vipers were too much for the hometown Dauphin Kings, crushing them 8-1 in the final.[3] In another lopsided results, during the round robin, the Brockville Braves crushed the Oakville Blades 11-2 to tie two different tournament records (goal by a winning team in one game, one game spread).[4]

Walchuk Named Player Of The Week:

Vernon Vipers forward Dylan Walchuk has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 24, the league announced Monday.
Walchuk had points in each of the Vipers three road wins over the Spruce Grove Saints last week, helping the Snakes to their third consecutive Doyle Cup and another appearance in the RBC Cup national championships.
The McBride, B.C. product had three goals and an assist in four games including both regulation goals in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win where he was 1st Star. Walchuk was the top point-getter for Vernon in the Doyle Cup totalling four goals and two assists in seven games.
He now has 21 points in the 23 games the Vipers have played in the postseason which leads the team. Walchuk was also the team's leading scorer in the regular season with 24 goals and 32 assists.
This is the second time in the playoffs that Walchuk has earned Player of the Week. He also took the nod for the week ending March 27.
Honourable mentions this week include Vipers netminder Kirby Halcrow (four games, one 1st Star, 1.74 goals-against average, .928 save percentage) and defenceman Adam Thompson (four games, two goals).

SPRUCE GROVE — Throughout their season, the Spruce Grove Saints seemed like they always had a way to win. In the Doyle Cup, the Vernon Vipers gave them a taste of their own medicine.
The Vipers downed the Saints 4-2 on Sunday night, winning Game 7 of the series and earning a spot at next week’s Royal Bank Cup junior A national championship.
With the two teams deadlocked in a 2-2 tie in the third period, a peculiar sequence decided the Saints’ and the Vipers’ respective fates.
Spruce Grove defenceman Jesse Slobodian’s shot from the point clanged off of the post, allowing Vipers forward David Robinson to corral the loose puck. He gave it up to his linemates, skated up the ice and was at the net in time to finish off a three-on-two to net what would be the game winner, at 13:53.
“I saw the puck hit the post; close call there,” Robinson said. “And I got the puck and turned it over to (Bryce) Kakoske and just buried my head. Bryce shot it on net and it’s a game of bounces and the puck managed to land on my stick. It was a greasy goal, but in a game like that where it’s so tight, that’s the kind of goal that I imagined would win it.”
Adam Thompson added an empty-net goal for Vernon with 20 seconds to play to put a wrap on a roller-coaster of a series. After three games played in Vernon, Spruce Grove returned home with a 2-1 series lead. The Vipers answered back with Game 4 and 5 wins, going up 3-2. The Saints staved off elimination Saturday night, before succumbing to the Vipers on Sunday.
“We talked about it with our players before the playoffs even started; we built this team for a seven-game series,” Vipers head coach Mark Ferner said. “Some of those kids have played seven Game 7s (in the past three years).
“The difference wasn’t a whole bunch. You look at the scorers in all of the games and you look at the shots, it was two real good teams playing and we were just fortunate to come out ahead.”
The Vipers took control of the game early, jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead. Dane Muench and Dylan Walchuk both scored on what looked like innocent shot attempts on Saints netminder Vincenzo Marozzi (24 saves). The Saints regained their composure though, as Scott Allen netted a power-play goal late in the first to give his team some momentum.
The Saints’ special teams cashed in again in the second period. Centre Josh Keizer scooped up a puck from a stumbling Vernon defenceman and went in alone on Vipers goalie Kirby Halcrow (29 saves), roofing a short-handed goal at 6:34 of the second to tie the game.
From there, the Vipers poured the pressure on. It was here that Marozzi would redeem himself, making a series of outstanding saves in the final 10 minutes of play. With 1:25 left in the second period, Marozzi was on his stomach and managed to make a kick save on a bouncing puck.
“Vinny was outstanding as usual,” Saints head coach Jason McKee said of the 21-year-old. “He made some big saves, especially in the last 10 minutes of the second. He kept us in the tie.
“He’s obviously going to be a tough guy to replace next year. He’s been the backbone of our team all year.”
McKee said he’d keep his post-game discussion with his players inside the dressing room, noting that there wasn’t much to say after his team had made it so far this year.
“Those kids gave everything they had this year to put themselves in this position and to fall short by one goal ... it’s tough.”
The Vipers will advance to the Royal Bank Cup for the third time and look for their third consecutive national crown. The games get underway in Camrose on Sunday, May 1, and run through May 8.

WASHINGTON -- Nyjer Morgan's latest run-in with a Major League catcher cost him a chance to start against the team that cast him away last month.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke revealed Sunday morning that Morgan suffered a deep bruise to his right thigh in a collision with Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit on Wednesday. That's why Morgan was not in Milwaukee's starting lineup for either game of a Sunday doubleheader against the Nationals.
"I knew he was sore but I didn't realize [how sore]," Roenicke said. "He's available to pinch-hit, but that's all."
Minus the injury, Morgan might have started both games Sunday. He is 6-for-14 lifetime against Washington's Game 1 starter, Jason Marquis, and 5-for-10 against Game 2 starter Livan Hernandez. Morgan missed an opportunity to play against the team that took away his starting job in Spring Training -- Rick Ankiel is the Nationals' center fielder instead -- and traded him to the Brewers on March 27 for a fringe prospect, infielder Cutter Dykstra.
Asked whether Morgan would miss significant time, Roenicke said, "It better be day to day."

Captain David Robinson gave his team a third straight berth in the Royal Bank Cup Jr. “A” championships when he scored the winner at 13:53 of the third period in his team’s 4-2 win over the Spruce Grove Saints.
The goal settled a tense contest that had seen the Vipers jump to a 2-0 first period lead only to see the Saints battle back to tie the game.
Dane Muench stunned a packed Grant Fuhr Arena with a goal just 38 seconds into the match. After Dylan Walchuk won an offensive zone faceoff, Brett Corkey’s point shot hit someone and landed in front of Muench in the slot. His shot appeared to deflect off a defender and over Vincenzo Marozzi’s glove.
Dylan Walchuk doubled the lead at 14:05. According to Phil Patenaude, who joined the Viper radio team in the press box, “Bas dished some crisp sauce to Wally for a forehand-backhand five-cheese tuck.”
Here’s a translation of Patenaude’s analysis: “Marcus Basara saucered a pass over a defender’s stick and Walchuk collected the puck on his forehand before tucking a backhand between the goalie’s pads.”
The Saints got back in the game with a power play goal at 15:29. The Saints set up shop in the Viper end with some crisp passing. With all four Viper defenders collapsing toward the net, Scott Allen had room to fire a low shot that found the corner to Kirby Halcrow’s left.
The Saints followed that goal with some good pressure, but were unable to beat Halcrow, who made an especially fine save on a deflected Dustin Fostvelt shot late in the period.
The Vipers’ lone power play of the night resulted in a Josh Keizer short handed goal at 6:37 of the second period. Keizer blocked an Adam Thompson point shot and raced down the ice. His low wrist shot essentially overpowered Halcrow and the game was tied.
For the next four or five minutes the Saints were in full cry, attacking relentlessly. However, Halcrow’s goaltending and desperate Viper defending prevented further damage. A courageous David Robinson shot block characterized the Viper goal line stand.
Gradually, the Vipers regained composure and, inevitably, they began attacking the Saints with the degree of ferocity shown earlier by the Saints. Now Marozzi had to be brilliant in net, and he was.
The third period featured non-stop excitement as the teams exchanged scoring chances. The deciding goal came off a line rush that started in the Viper end.
Kyle Murphy made a nifty move as he crossed the Saint blue line and found Bryce Kakoske along the right boards. Trusting that David Robinson would be busting to the net from the left wing, Kakoske zipped a pass to the far side that Robinson directed past Marozzi at high speed just before going past the net.
After that goal at 13:53, the Vipers battened down the hatches. Even though the Saints fired a barrage of shots when Marozzi was pulled for an attacker, they were unable to mount a serious threat, except for deflection with four seconds remaining, a tip that Halcrow saved acrobatically.
In the interim, Adam Thompson had fired a 180-footer that found the empty Saint net at 19:40.
So, the Vipers defeated the Saints in game seven of the Doyle Cup for the second straight year. Unlike last year, when the Vipers salted away the victory with four first-period goals, this contest was a pulsating affair that had the 1293 fans on the edge of their seats for the full 60 minutes.
Viper Coach Mark Ferner summed up the series with praise for the Saints: “They wanted it as much as we did, and they worked their butts off. We just made some key plays at key times and I’m very proud of how our kids performed.”

The Doyle Cup was donated by Penticton businessman Pete Doyle and his family in 1985 and is presented to the winner of the Best-of-7 series between the BCHL and AJHL playoff champions. Since the Cup was introduced the BCHL has won 16 of 25 championships. Vernon (BCHL) has won the most titles with SIX, followed by the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL) with four. Penticton and Surrey are the only other B.C. teams to have won multiple Doyle Cups.
From 1968 to 1984 there were 15 B.C./Alberta Championships as the event was not contested in 1970 or 1979. The BCHL won six titles, the AJHL captured eight championships and the Richmond Sockeyes of the PCJHL won in 1977. Penticton was the only B.C. team to win multiple BC/Alberta Championships.
The Winner of the Doyle Cup advances to the RBC Cup, Canada's National Junior A Hockey Championship, as the representative for the Pacific Region.

The Saints couldn’t have picked a better time to get their power play going as David Glen got the Alberta Junior Hockey League champions’ struggling special-teams unit untracked at 16:01 of the first period Saturday night, banging a rebound off the end boards past Vernon goaltender Kirby Halcrow.
Spruce Grove’s Scott Allen then made it 2-0 just 2:57 later and the Saints managed to stave off elimination, defeating the Vipers by that 2-0 score and forcing Game 7 on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.
Sunday’s winner will advance to the Royal Bank Cup, the national junior A championship, starting April 30 in Camrose. The Vipers have won the last two Canadian titles, having defeated the Saints 7-3 at home in the Doyle Cup clincher — between the B.C. and Alberta reps — last season.
This will be another fitting end between two solid organizations.
“I thought our goaltending was outstanding tonight and we capitalized on our opportunities,” said Saints head coach Jason McKee. “The big power-play goal to get us going, then scoring late in the period gave us some momentum.
“I don’t think anybody was picking a short series. I think we all knew it was going to be a long series and there’s not a lot to choose between the two teams, for sure.”
Having lost two straight at home, the Saints weren’t about to suffer a third. In fact, according to the organization, the club has never lost three consecutive home games since moving from St. Albert in the 2004-05 season.
McKee’s Saints took advantage of special teams to push the series to the limit. The Saints were just 1-for-9 with the man advantage in the two previous home games, losing both after grabbing a 2-1 series lead in Vernon. Saturday the power play was 1-for-4, but struck early, gaining momentum in the opening 20 minutes.
Glen and Allen provided the first-period scoring and the Saints then played a defensive brand of hockey, relying on netminder Vincenzo Marozzi as the hosts were outshot 25-22.
“We made a couple of mistakes that ended up in the back of our net, but for the most part we created a lot of opportunities,” said Vipers coach Mark Ferner. “It’s a tough thing to ask to come in here — and we understand that — to win three games in a row on the road against a good hockey team.
“Yeah, the guys are disappointed, but if we knew we had an opportunity to play a Game 7, especially after the first three, we would have taken it.”
Most of Vernon’s chances came in the first period as well. Dylan Walchuk, who scored twice in Thursday’s 3-2 overtime victory, slid a chance wide eight minutes in and Michael Zalewski was stoned twice by Marozzi on a 4-on-4 break. Marozzi also deflected a puck wide as he scrambled out of his net and was nearly caught in no man’s land.
“Shoot, we have an open-net short-handed. The goalie dives (to deflect it). We maybe could have made another decision on it for a tap-in. … A lot of pucks were in behind their goalie, we just never got there,” said Ferner. “Like I said, we’re disappointed, but I’m happy with our guys’ effort and I know they’ll be ready (Sunday).”
As will the Saints, who should get a bigger crowd than the roughly 1,100 on hand Saturday.
“I thought we really stuck to our team framework tonight,” said McKee. “Played real good defence and when we did break down Vince made some big saves.”

A strong defensive effort by the Spruce Grove Saints gave them a 2-0 win at home against the Vipers on Saturday. In the process, the Saints evened the Doyle Cup series at 3-3.
Vincenzo Marozzi was the hero in the first period when the Vipers came close to taking the lead on two occasions. The 20-year-old netminder stoned Mike Zalewski who opted for a high shot on a breakaway. Marozzi then stopped Zalewski’s rebound attempt.
Later, Marozzi made a bad pass that was picked off by Trevor Fitzgerald. Then he desperately dived across to parry Fitzgerald’s shot with the paddle of his stick.
The Saints got the all-important first goal on the power play at 16:01. With Ryan Renz in the penalty box for a post-whistle cross check, Felix Poulin fired a point shot off the lively back boards and David Glen bundled it home.
Then, at 18:58, a mental lapse by a Viper defenceman gave Josh Koper and Scott Allen an odd-man rush. Koper fed Allen for a one-timer for Allen’s fifth goal of the Doyle Cup.
That goal was critical because it allowed the Saints to play the shutdown game that has been their hallmark this season. They allowed the |Vipers just two scoring chances in the second period, both on the power play.
The Vipers did manage five scoring chances in the third period, but Marozzi continued his stellar play. The Vipers were also strong defensively, as they held the Saints to two legitimate chances.
As part of their defensive strategy, the Saints keyed on Dylan Walchuk, roughing him up at every opportunity. They were able to continue this strategy because referees Lance McKinnon and Ryan Thompson declined to call elbowing and roughing penalties on the Saints.
Finally, with the game essentially decided late in the third period, Walchuk retaliated and was penalized for roughing when he responded to one of his tormentors, Josh Koper.
So, in a repeat of last year’s Doyle Cup, the Vipers and will go to a game seven that will decide who gets to participate in the Royal Bank Cup national championship that begins April 30 in Camrose, Alberta.
Game time is 6 pm Pacific time on Sunday.

Vincenzo Marozzi was the hero in the first period when the Vipers came close to taking the lead on two occasions. The 20-year-old netminder stoned Mike Zalewski who opted for a high shot on a breakaway. Marozzi then stopped Zalewski’s rebound attempt.
Later, Marozzi made a bad pass that was picked off by Trevor Fitzgerald. Then he desperately dived across to parry Fitzgerald’s shot with the paddle of his stick.
The Saints got the all-important first goal on the power play at 16:01. With Ryan Renz in the penalty box for a post-whistle cross check, Felix Poulin fired a point shot off the lively back boards and David Glen bundled it home.
Then, at 18:58, a mental lapse by a Viper defenceman gave Josh Koper and Scott Allen an odd-man rush. Koper fed Allen for a one-timer for Allen’s fifth goal of the Doyle Cup.
That goal was critical because it allowed the Saints to play the shutdown game that has been their hallmark this season. They allowed the |Vipers just two scoring chances in the second period, both on the power play.
The Vipers did manage five scoring chances in the third period, but Marozzi continued his stellar play. The Vipers were also strong defensively, as they held the Saints to two legitimate chances.
As part of their defensive strategy, the Saints keyed on Dylan Walchuk, roughing him up at every opportunity. They were able to continue this strategy because referees Lance McKinnon and Ryan Thompson declined to call elbowing and roughing penalties on the Saints.
Finally, with the game essentially decided late in the third period, Walchuk retaliated and was penalized for roughing when he responded to one of his tormentors, Josh Koper.
So, in a repeat of last year’s Doyle Cup, the Vipers and will go to a game seven that will decide who gets to participate in the Royal Bank Cup national championship that begins April 30 in Camrose, Alberta.
Game time is 6 pm Pacific time on Sunday.

SPRUCE GROVE – A trio of one-minute wonders Thursday night at Grant Fuhr Arena had the Vernon Vipers on the brink of a third-straight berth in the Royal Bank Cup national Junior A hockey championships.
Each of their goals – two from game MVP Dylan Walchuk and the overtime winner by Bryce Kakoske – all came near the first minute of a period as the Snakes outlasted the Spruce Grove Saints 3-2 in Game 5 of the Doyle Cup regional championships.
The BCHL champion Vipers led the best-of-seven series 3-2 heading into Saturday night's Game 6 where a win would allow them to defend their two-time national crown in Camrose, starting April 30.
After Vernon gained the Spruce Grove zone on its first overtime possession, defenceman Max Mowat fired from the point and the rebound went right to Kakoske who scored 35 seconds into the extra frame.
"Dave (Robinson) and Murph (Kyle Murphy) got after the puck right away and it squirted back to Mowat and the shot hit someone and I just happened to have a wide open net. It was like a nine iron, I just had a chop at it and it worked out well," said a thick-bearded Kakoske.
"That was a good way to finish it – right at the start of overtime. We didn't want to go too far into it. We've played the last two nights so it's good to get it over with quick."
Vernon needed just 66 seconds to hush 1,300 fans as Walchuk worked off the sidewall and, using a Saints' defender as a screen, beat Vince Marozzi five-hole with a quick snapshot.
Scott Allen, Spruce Grove's leading scorer, reignited the crowd 12 seconds later with his fourth goal of the series.
For perhaps the first time in the series, the two teams were able to match one another's intensity and spent the next 40 minutes in a tight-checking affair. And for the second game in a row, Saints' d-man Corey Chorneyko delivered a staggering hip check in the neutral zone, this time on Walchuk as he rushed up the right wing.
Spruce Grove had an opportunity to take the lead with a shortened 5-on-3 powerplay midway through the first period, but they were unable to penetrate Vernon's triangle coverage. Saints' head coach Jason Mckee felt a goal there would have been a game changer.
"I thought we battled really hard all night. We had our chances and it didn't go in," he said.
"If we're willing to play the same way I think we'll give ourselves a chance to win. We're in a tough situation, but I think we'll respond (in Game 6)."
Vernon forward Marcus Basara had a clear breakaway late in the first frame, but Marozzi (game MVP, 22 saves) came up with a well-timed stop.
Spruce Grove appeared to take a lead in the second period when Brett Switzer cut in from the right wing and fired on net. The goal light went on momentarily but the puck had hit the post and dropped in the crease behind Kirby Halcrow (21 saves) and stayed out.
Walchuk netted his second goal just 65 seconds into the third period on a powerplay. The Saints' penalty killers suffered a collective brain cramp and decided to change all at once, allowing Halcrow to fire a clear pass to David Robinson at the far blueline. Hitting the zone at speed, Walchuk took a touch pass to go in on a partial breakaway, beating Marozzi low glove side.
"It was a mental error on our part. We can't be doing that at this stage; they're a good team and they'll capitalize on opportunities like that," said Saints' winger David Glen, a Fort Saskatchewan product who forced OT midway through the third period.
Vernon had trouble clearing the zone, and after some slick passing and several quick shots on Halcrow, the hard-hitting forward buried the puck past the fallen Vernon keeper.
"Pretty complete effort but it was a tough one at the end. We left it too long, I guess," said the well-spoken Glen, a three-year Saints' veteran.
"This year we were really prepared to look past it (AJHL title) and we were really looking forward to this series. We were a lot more prepared to win this time and I think we will be ready to go hard here (in Game 6).
"We just have to remember we still have life here and that it's not over until it's over."
Robinson had a glorious chance to put the game away late in regulation, but Marozzi somehow slid cross-crease to deny the Vernon captain's one-timer on a pass from Malcolm Lyles at the sidewall.
Heading into the Doyle Cup, the Saints had just three home losses all season, including the AJHL playoffs where they went 12-1. With two road wins in a row, Vernon had all the momentum heading into Saturday, but head coach Mark Ferner was taking nothing for granted.
"This is a tough building to play in and they've proved it all year long. We just need to make sure we're focussed and disciplined in our systems," he said.
"You just got to stay on course. Both teams play a similar style and you don't want to give up a lot and you have to work for everything that you're going to get.
"(The difference between) winning and losing is very small. Just look at the game winner tonight. It was a shot that he couldn't control the rebound and it could have landed on their stick, but it landed on ours."
SNAKE BITES: The Vipers rolled with the same lineup as Game 4, with forwards Pat McGillis and Colton Sparrow and blueliner Phil Patenaude sitting out…There was no ice clean between regulation and overtime, just a short break and a 10-minute OT period. Had the game gone longer, the standard OT format would apply, with ice cleans and 20-minute sudden death periods…Ferner gave the Vipers a day off Saturday.

For the second time in the past eight years the Wellington Dukes are the Central Canadian Champions and move on to the Royal Bank Cup in Camrose, Alberta to play for the National Junior A Championship.
The Dukes defeated the host Huntsville Otters in the finals of the Dudley Hewitt Cup by a score of 5 to 3. Wellington led after the opening frame 2 to 1 and the teams were tied at 3 entering the final period. The Dukes dug down and found enough energy to pop in the final two goals to pick up their 58th win of the season.
Five different scorers for the Dukes as the Darcy Boys, Greenaway and Murphy along with Brian Bunnett, Joe Zarbo and Rusty Hafner each found the back of the Otters net. Curtis Leonard and Steve Evans each had a pair of assists with single helpers going to Brendan Barletta, Sean Rudy and Braden Kavaratzis. Jordan Ruby earned his 75th career win in just his second season with the Dukes and finished the tournament with a sparkling 1.67 GAA as well as a save % of .931.
The Huntsville Otters are to be congratulated for being gracious hosts of this years Dudley Hewitt Cup.
The Dukes will now prepare for their first game at the RBC on May 1st when they take on the host Camrose Kodiaks.

Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey's Jeremy Langlois Named Most Valuable Player At Annual Banquet

HAMDEN, Conn. - At the Annual Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Awards Banquet, sophomore Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) was named the team's Most Valuable Player after leading the Bobcats with 18 goals this season. Freshman Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) was named the program's Rookie of the Year while Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was awarded the team's 7th Player Award. Senior's Pat McGann (Evergreen, Ill.) and Sean Coughlin (Winthrop, Mass.) were honored with the Coaches' Award while Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Quebec) received the Academic Award after posting a team-high 3.88 grade-point average.
Langlois, last season's Rookie of the Year, had a break-out season as he led the program with 18 goals. Langlois added five assists for the year for 23 points, good for third in the line-up. Langlois led the team in multiple-goal games this season, scoring twice against Rensselaer, Clarkson and Canisius. Last season, Langlois scored eight goals and assisted on 12 more to run his two-year totals to 26 goals and 17 assists for 43 career points.
Jones also had an immediate impact in the Bobcats' line-up as he led all Quinnipiac freshman in goals (9), assists (15) and points (24), while ranking second on the team in points scored. Jones, who ranked in the top 50 in the nation in first-year player points per game, had his first career point in the Bobcats' opening-season win against Ohio State on Oct. 8. Jones' first career goal came against Bentley two games later in a 3-2 victory.
Hartzell earned the 7th Player Award, given to an individual who has shown the most growth as a member of the men's ice hockey team in his time at Quinnipiac. Hartzell had a break-out year, earning MLX Skates/ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week honors twice. The sophomore netminder finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage (.927) and 15th in goals-against average (2.22), while his .600 win percentage (12-7-6) ranked 18th in the nation. Hartzell also posted three shutouts for the year, the 10th most in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.
McGann and Coughlin are this season's recipients of the Coaches Award, which is given to the student-athlete who exemplifies everything that Quinnipiac men's hockey embodies. Both individuals are four-year members of the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team who have served in various capacities within the program. Both have been recognized for hard work and determination and have also been regarded as outstanding leaders within the Bobcats locker room.
Bouharevich will receive his second Academic Award of his career after earning top honors last season as well. Bouharevich carries a 3.88 grade-point average while majoring in health sciences. This season, the junior center totaled eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points, good for fifth among all Quinnipiac skaters. For his career, Bouharevich now has 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 career points.

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage head hockey coach Dave Shyiak announced Thursday his four captains for the 2011-12 slate.
Shyiak, who will be entering his seventh year with UAA, has selected seniors Brad Gorham and Jade Portwood and juniors Chris Crowell and Scott Warner to assume the Seawolves’ leadership positions come September.
“I think this leadership group should provide us the same qualities and direction we had with our program this year,” said Shyiak, “All four have performed well in the classroom and have gained respect in the locker room by their peers."
UAA begins the season Sept. 30 with an exhibition game against Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Wasilla, then open the regular season against Clarkson and St. Cloud State in the annual Kendall Hockey Classic, Oct. 7-8 at Sullivan Arena.
