From the BCHL website "Under the current Hockey Canada regulations, if a player participates in an independent league like the BCHL, they are not permitted to join a Hockey Canada-sanctioned league during the same season, after Sept. 30th". Also states "the league has strengthened it's commitment to BC born and raised players".

When were these two players released? Did it happen prior to Sept 30th and just gets reported now? For their sake I sure hope so. If released after Sept 30th here are two young BC players, 17 + 18 years old, who are no longer eligible to play on any team covered by Hockey Canada. Where do they go to continue their hockey career? Let's see where they play now. This is exactly where the BCHL's credibility takes a big hit and future recruiting gets impacted.

Neither of these players played a game after September 30. Gelbard, in fact, never played a single game due to an injury. Payne played 3 games, all in September. I would think that they could go to any Hockey Canada league and play this season.
