Still having a hard time to understand why the BCHL left the Hockey Canada partnership. It's disappointing not seeing a representative from the BCHL playing in the Centennial Cup which starts this weekend.
They left because Hockey Canada refused to allow 15 and 16 year olds to transfer across provincial boundaries to play Junior A. But Hockey Canada allows those 15 and 16s to cross provincial boundaries to play Major Junior in the QMJHL, OHL, and WHL. Not many 15s do it, but a lot of 16s do. Those 3 Major Junior leagues control Hockey Canada and want the 16 year olds to forego a chance at an NCAA scholarship and play for them.
On top it all, many parents back east want their kids to be allowed to play out west where a lot more scholarships are granted. The other option is to go to the USHL. I guess the next step for the BCHL is to go totally rogue and leave Hockey Canada, but there are all kinds of insurance issues and getting referees if that happens.
Officially, the BCHL will say it was about timing of playoff dates but the 15 and especially 16 year old interprovincial movement was a big factor.
