I watched the Vipers/Vees game online on BCHL TV.
Well from the game I watched, the score was much more closer then the actual game. Both teams didn't create or generate a lot of chances or get many shots on goal but I thought the Vees were the better team and had the Vipers on their heels at different times of the game. Penticton may have not had a whole lot of opportunities but had the puck on their sticks more and a lot more zone time, compared to the Snakes. Vernon didn't get many scoring chances or have the puck in the offensive zone for long periods and turned over the puck a lot this evening. I don't know why Hunter Donohoe was still playing after the 1st period. For a veteran 20 yr old, he must have coughed up the puck at least ten times, including on the Vees second goal. Out of all the games this pre-season, the Snakes turned over the puck in their own end more times tonight then they did the entire Okanagan Cup Tournament. Give credit to a strong Vees forecheck that were swarming Vernon's defence. The Vipers PK was good but struggled with the man advantage. I thought the Vipers were lucky to be in this game after the 2nd period. Vernon hung on and managed to force overtime late. The Vipers couldn't keep pace with Penticton and were lucky the Vees weren't getting more opportunities/scoring chances where they would have put this game away sooner.
I noticed when the Vees were taking the team photo after the game with the Okanagan Cup trophy the Vees coaching staff removed their masks and some players were hugging other players with no helmets.
After starting the Okanagan Cup Tournament 0-4 I didn't see this Viper team coming anywhere near the Final. I thought the team made some changes/roster moves and improved after the first four games. Sure they still made mistakes, weren't winning games and so on but the team got better as the Tournament went along and if it wasn't for blowing a few 2-0 leads, they may have pushed for 2nd place. Give the Vipers some credit for knocking off West Kelowna Friday a team that went 4-0 vs Vernon in the Round Robin and then pushing the Vees to overtime in the Championship final. Even though I thought the Vees were the better team tonight, it's still a tough and dissapointing loss at the end of the pre-season, when knowing you were one goal away from winning.
Josh Prokop, Kjell Kjemhus, Trey Taylor, Ryan Shostak, Zack Tonelli and Koen MacInnes played well and looked good for Vernon.
Ben Wozney, Connor Bouchard, Liam Malmquist, Ethan Martini, Matteo Costantini, Jacob Quillan and Yaniv Perets looked good and played well for Penticton.
A big pat on the back and congratulations to the BC Hockey League for pulling off the Okanagan Cup/pre-season in these difficult times when fans were wondering if we were going to see any kind of hockey this fall. The big question now is, will we see a regular season? With the amount of cases going up daily, if we do see a regular season, I don't think will see fans inside hockey arenas this winter.
I said it numerous times before but a few Anonymous posters defended him, Yes Donohoe is brutal, first shift of the game was a giveaway. And what a waste of valuable playing experience by putting MacInnes in net tonight. Sure the Vipers got lucky getting into the finals but Grant or Clarke would have benefited greatly with the opportunity to play in an important game. Overall poor development and decision making on the part of Jason Mckee
He's BACK...Negative Bob is alive..Didn't hear from him lately, as the Vipers have been on the improve. The shutout in WK, definitely kept the negative comments in check. However due to the OT loss against the Vee's, he had to find a Negative,even tho MacInnes had a shutout the night before. Many other teams are either shut down,or not playing,we should feel the positivity of just being able to watch the Vipers,who knows if that is the last game of the year, or not ? I certainly hope there is some sort of abbreviated season of some sort...otherwise who else will Negative Bob Troll ??
Just being realistic Anonymous, and I'm sorry that the truth has ruffled your feathers. I love watching and supporting the Vipers but you can't tell me that bringing in a temporary player to play valuable minutes will do anything for the team is ridiculous. As for Donohoe I think VDHF said it all.
Donohoe, reminds of a player we had years ago with the last name RENZ, who incidentally cost us a three peat RBC CUP. Whenever RENZ had the puck and had to make a quick decision as to what to do with it he would think O.M.G. what do I do next????? Most times he would cough up the puck to the other team or just create work for his team because of his panic mode whenever he received the puck. I have to tell you sometimes I just don't understand coaches when they can plainly see that all the training in the world with some players is just not going to change them ,old habits die hard. I would say with Donohue that we should cut our losses and trade him to another team who perhaps need a player with size and needs a change in there line up.
Anyway, GO, VIPER, GO.
We have watched all the "pre-season" games on hockey tv and this is our take. After game one we really did not care if we saw another game. The team played a horrible game. They deserved to lose based on their inability to pass the puck, defend their end or create any offensive moves. Reluctantly watched game #2 and saw a different team. Still playing relatively poorly but much better than the previous night. As the series unfolded we saw a team begin to come together and actually play as a team. Sometimes they were rewarded. Sometimes they were not. Even though they played consistently better through the series, we honestly never expected them to beat West Kelowna this past Friday night. They played a very good game and triumped in the end. We will say though West Kelowna showed very digusting sportsmanship in their loss. All things considered, they played well against Penticton and held their own. Overtime can go either way. Penticton got the lucky break. We are pleased with how far they have come in such a short time. Regarding the WHLer's. Some may stay, some may go.... much like a regular season where players come and go. Our hope is the if they go, those that remain will have learned so plays from them. if that occurs, then it was not a loss but a gain. We are looking forward to the strange 2020-2021 season and realize that we could very well be watching it all on HockeyTV. That is okay too.. this has been a strange year. Our hope is that the boys continue to learn and improve. Bring on the new season!
They should have name it The Freddie Cup, he just organized it to toot his own horn and feed his ego! Was anybody surprised at the out come done deal! Penticton went 11-1 it wasn't even close!
Hey Bingo, has it occurred to you that maybe Donohoe is trying really hard to do what McGoo wants him to do and not play the way he can and knows how to play? Remember Brendan Kim? He refused to do what McGoo ordered him to do and asked for a trade. McGoo wouldn't trade him so he went back home. The amount of power and control management has over these kids is disturbing. Perhaps a new coach or change of scenery would be better for the young man. Ask some of last years players who left what they think...
The first year Donohue played here and his example of play this year has not changed. Again, old habits die hard not matter how hard you try. I still say be fair to the kid and trade him because what is happening for this kid isn't working and yes perhaps a change in coaching style might benefit Donohue . We have to think of the player first and foremost.
