VERNON, B.C. JANUARY 4th, 2017
The New Year has posed some challenges for the Vernon Vipers who will be missing a few players in the second half of the season. The team will be saying goodbye to #14 Christian Cakebread who made the difficult decision to accept an NCAA scholarship to Niagara University in New York. The Purple Eagles have been struggling with injuries and opted to offer the 19-year-old Gilbert, Arizona forward a full ride to attend the school.
Cakebread put up 20 points in 35 games including 9 goals and 11 assists in his second year with the Vipers. The Vipers would like to thank Christian for all of his hard work and dedication to the Viper program and wish him all the best in his college career.
Meanwhile the Vipers will also be without captain #12 Riley Brandt for the next 4 to 6 weeks after he suffered a broken thumb during a game against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on December 29th. The team has also lost #24 Luke Gingras for an undetermined amount of time after he suffered a fractured finger the following night in Salmon Arm.
The Vipers also released #17 Nicholas Rasovic at the end of the season. The Vipers would like to wish him all the best in his hockey endeavours.
The team will look to make some final moves before the January 10th trade deadline. Listen to Head Coach Mark Ferner’s comments below.

Congrats to Christian Cakebread on his scholarship! With the suspension-injury to Luke Gingras, releasing Nicholas Rasovic and injury to Riley Brandt, and now the departure of Cakebread this leaves the Vipers in a big hole. This is a bad time of year for Cakebread to get a scholeaship, putting the Vipers in a hole to try and find a replacement days before the BCHL Trade Deadline. Mark Ferner said in his interview the Vipers will get a card back for Cakebread. Rumors going around the internet a former Viper is returning to the Vipers. So far just those are just rumors. Before last weekend, I was wondering if the Vipers were going to make any moves at all before the Trade Deadline, now you gotta wonder who the Vipers will find-pick up to replace Rasovic & Cakebread.
GO for a dropoff with someone who is a whl player with experience such as the vees have done.
Mark Ferner said hes been busy making lots of phone calls, trying to add two players from either the USHL or WHL.
Question for DieHArd: If Cakebread had been offered his scholarship after the Jan.10 trade deadline.....would he'd have to stay with the Vipers?
It does seem like poor timing, and a shame the Vipers can't protect themselves in situations like this.
Any insight appreciated :)
Cakebread or any player is free to leave their team any time of year. I remember Dylan Walchuk left University returning to the Vipers in 2011 just before Christmas break, Walchuk then left the team on the trade deadline for the Spokane Chiefs.
