Blazers Name Former Vipers Head Coach-GM Mark Ferner New Associate Coach:

The WHL Kamloops Blazers have named
former Vernon Vipers Head Coach-GM Mark Ferner new Associate Coach.  Ferner spent four seasons with the Blazers (2002-2006) before joining the Vipers in 2007.  Ferner spent four seasons with the Vipers (2007-2011) before joining the Everett Silvertips. In four seasons with the Vipers Ferner went 165-68-7 guiding the Vipers to back to back Royal Bank Cup Championships in 2009 & 2010 before falling in the Royal Bank Cup Finals in 2011.  Ferner was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in Round 10, 194th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.  Ferner spent seven years in the NHL with Buffalo, Washington, Anaheim & Detroit.

BLAZERS NAME MARK FERNER ASSOCIATE COACH

Kamloops, BC – The Kamloops Blazers have added to their coaching staff with Mark Ferner joining the Blazers as the team’s new Associate Coach. Ferner comes to the Blazers after spending the past ten years coaching junior hockey as an Assistant and Head Coach in the BCHL and WHL. 

The native of Sedley, Saskatchewan brings a strong coaching pedigree to the Kamloops Blazers. Ferner’s coaching career started with the Vancouver Giants following his retirement from professional hockey in 2001. He was a member of the Kamloops Blazers coaching staff from 2002 until 2006 as an Assistant and Head Coach. Following his stint with the Blazers, he went on to coach the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL for four seasons. Under his guidance, Ferner posted a 165-51-24 record winning three consecutive BCHL Championships and two consecutive Royal Bank Cups as the Canadian Junior A Champions in 2009 and 2010. He spent the last two seasons as the Head Coach of the Everett Silvertips of the WHL.

“Mark has continued to evolve and improve as a coach over the past ten years,” commented General Manager Craig Bonner. “His hockey resume is very impressive. He has had tremendous success as a Head Coach in Junior A and we believe he will complement our coaching staff well.”

Ferner also brings a prominent playing and coaching background back to Kamloops. He played his entire junior hockey career with the Kamloops Jr. Oilers / Blazers franchise from 1982-85 before playing professional hockey for 16 seasons all over North American and in Europe. During his professional career, Ferner suited up for 91 NHL games split between the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Detroit Red Wings.

“We are excited to have Mark join our coaching staff,” commented Head Coach Dave Hunchak. “He is a great addition to what we already have in place.”
