There’s nothing like a powerplay binge to bust out of a three-game goal drought.

The Vernon Vipers connected on each of their three man advantages, in succession, on the way to a 6-2 win over the host Victoria Grizzlies in B.C. Hockey League action Friday night.

After traveling all day, the Snakes, second in the Interior Division at 31-15-1-2, didn’t arrive at The Q Centre until about 5:30 p.m. Head coach Mark Ferner thinks it may have helped as the short turnaround didn’t give goal-starved Vipers time to dwell on their past few outings.

“We had real good efforts from a lot of people,” said Ferner. “Schammy (netminder Jarrod Schamerhorn) was good, the dee were good and we didn’t turn over as many pucks.

“A few shifts we had them hemmed in there, and that can take the wind out of their sails if you follow it up with a few good shifts.”

Vernon forward Riley Brandt, named first star, opened the scoring in front of nearly 1,000 fans with his ninth of the season. The feisty Trail product collected a turnover in the high slot, then turned and fired past Michael Stiliadis, who had a cup of coffee with the Vipers last season.

The 22-17-1-10 Grizzlies stole the momentum with a goal eight seconds before the ice clean, and added another in the opening minute of the second frame. D-man Kevin Massey (7th goal) and sniper Brett Gruber (31st) handled the scoring.

Second star Brandon Egli (2nd), who was traded to Vernon along with fellow d-man Mitch Meek from Victoria in October, pulled the Vipers even with a point shot through traffic.

After that, Vernon’s powerplay went to work, starting with a Colton McCarthy wraparound for his seventh goal. Liam Coughlin (20th) deposited the rebound off a Luke Shiplo point blast, again with bodies in front of Stiliadis.

Anthony Latina (14th) capped the powerplay barrage in the final minute of the second frame, assisted by McCarthy and Egli.

“We shot the puck more with more traffic,” said Ferner. “And instead of going post-and-out, they’re going post-and-in. It was good for our group.”

Vernon rookie d-man Johnny Coughlin jumped up in the rush with Latina to complete the offence with his second of the year.

Schamerhorn recorded 22 saves for his 21st win. He was expected to get the start Saturday night when the Vipers visited the Cowichan Valley Capitals (18-28-2-2) Saturday at Island Savings Centre.

Danny Todosychuk will likely be in net today when Vernon wraps up a three-game road swing today (5 p.m.) against the Chilliwack Chiefs (28-16-1-3).

The Chiefs bowed 3-2 in OT to the BCHL-leading Penticton Vees Friday at Prospera Centre.

In other Interior Division play Friday, the host Salmon Arm Silverbacks iced the West Kelowna Warriors 4-1 at the Shaw Centre.

The win brought ‘Backs (22-19-3-5) to within two points of the Warriors (24-21-0-6) for the final Interior playoff spot.

The Merritt Centennials needed extra time to stop the Trail Smoke Eaters 5-4 at Cominco Arena.

John Teves recorded the OT winner for Merritt, while ex-Viper Dallas Calvin fired 2+2 for Trail.

SNAKE BITES: Vernon’s third-ranked powerplay (81.22 per cent) killed off each of Victoria’s four powerplays...Ferner credited forward Mackenzie Bauer with a solid effort after a two-week absence to injury.

You’ll have to look back through a few boxscores to find the last time a Vernon Viper scored a B.C. Hockey League goal.

The answer to that trivia question is Michael Roberts, a Vernon product and former Viper now with the KIJHL Revelstoke Grizzlies, who did the deed 185 minutes and 16 seconds ago in a Jan. 28 win over the Merritt Centennials.

Since then, the Vipers’ usually potent offence has taken a detour down Snakebite Alley as they fell 2-0 to the West Kelowna Warriors Tuesday at Royal LePage Place. Vernon has been shut out in three straight games.

“Kids played well, we just can’t score right now,” said Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner.

“We’re not initiating enough. We didn’t get enough second and third opportunities, and our forecheck’s not there because we’re not getting pucks deep. We’re trying to do everything off the rush.”

The Vipers (30-15-1-2), who are nine points ahead of the Warriors (24-20-0-6) for second place in the Interior Division, hurt their chances by sending West Kelowna on eight powerplays, including a trio of 5-on-3 advantages.

Liam Blackburn opened the scoring on the final 5-on-3, burying a rebound for his 21st of the season 7:10 into the third period.

With just over four minutes remaining, d-man Mac Ferner, the son of Mark Ferner, hammered home a point shot under the crossbar for his second of the year.

In just his third BCHL start, Stephen Heslop, a call-up from the KIJHL Princeton Posse, recorded 33 saves for his first career shutout.

“I didn’t know if I’d have an opportunity to play Junior A this year at all, so this one obviously means a lot to me,” said Heslop. “I’m so thankful to Bill (Posse coach Rotheisler) and Rylan (Warriors’ coach Ferster) for the opportunity to help out this team lately.”

Ferster was pleased with the Warriors’ compete level, as they were without starter Andy Desautels, d-man Kristian Blumenschein and forward Jordan Masters due to the flu.

“It was good for our guys to be in a game like tonight. They’re like playoff games now and this is what a playoff game would be like,” said Ferster, who also praised his team’s willingness to block shots. “It’s a huge part of the game and I think both teams committed to it tonight, which is what you’ll see more of down the stretch.”

Among his 24 saves, Vernon’s Danny Todosychuk recorded a pair of phenomenal right pad saves, robbing Jason Cotton in the first period and Tanner Campbell in the second period.

The Vipers leave for Vancouver Island this morning and will hope to break the goal drought when they visit the Victoria Grizzlies (22-16-1-9) tonight at The Q Centre.

Even with Vernon’s recent scoring troubles, they are tied with the Grizz for third-best offence (3.69 goals per game). Victoria has won three straight.

Until Vernon rediscovers its offensive mojo, Ferner can at least take solace in his team’s defence, which also ranks third overall (2.79 goals against).

“Defensively, we’re doing the job,” he said. “We’re limiting teams’ opportunities, but we’re not creating enough.

“We’re still in games, and that’s the positive. We’re still hanging around.”

The Vipers are in Duncan Saturday night to face the Cowichan Valley Capitals (18-28-2-2) before battling the Chilliwack Chiefs (28-26-1-1) Sunday afternoon.

West Kelowna visits the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (21-91-3-5) tonight at the Shaw Centre. The ‘Backs trail the Warriors by two points for the final Interior playoff spot.

SNAKE BITES: Vipers’ forward Luke Voltin was supposed to play Tuesday, but re-aggravated his ankle injury in the pre-game skate...Injured forward Mackenzie Bauer has been skating with the Vipers, but is questionable for weekend action.

No official press release but it was posted on a Stingrays Blog back in October.  Pimm attended the Washington Capitals Training camp in October before signing with the Capitals farm club Hershey Bears on August 15th 2014.  Pimm never played a single game with Hershey before joining the Stingrays has played in 37 games this season with South Carolina collecting (12-goals-10-assists-22-points).

Pimm finished his fourth and final season at Northeastern University last season before signing a amateur-tryout contract (ATO) with the American Hockey League (AHL) Milwaukee Admirals on March 27th 2014. Pimm was not rewarded with a new contract after going pointless in 9 games with Milwaukee. In 37 games last season with the Huskies Pimm recorded (20-goals-17-assists-37-points). Pimm went pointless in 9 games as a rookie with Milwaukee. Pimm played three years in Vernon (2007-2010) In 179 regular season games with the Vipers Pimm collected (64-goals-97-assists-161-points).

Bruins Recall Former Viper Forward Kane:

The American Hockey League (AHL) Providence Bruins have recalled former Vernon Vipers forward Kory Kane from the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) South Carolina Stingrays.

The transaction was posted on November 5th 2014 on the ECHL website-transactions page.  In 6 games with South Carolina Kane recorded (2-goals-2-assists-4-points).  Kane attended the Boston Bruins Training camp in October before being released-sent down to the AHL Providence Bruins before being assigned to the Stingrays in October.  In 32 games this year with the Bruins Kane has collected (2-goals-6-assists-8-points).

Kane finished four years at Ferris State University (2010-2014) before signing a PTO (player tryout) contract with the American Hockey League (AHL) Providence Bruins on April, 7th 2014. In 4 games last season with the Bruins Kane registered (0-goals-1-assist-1-point). Admirals Recall Former Vipers Defenceman Noonan From ECHL:

The American Hockey League (AHL) Milwaukee Admirals have recalled former Vernon Vipers defenceman Garrett Noonan from the East Coast Hockey Leagues (ECHL) Cincinnati Cyclones.  This was posted on the ECHL website-transactions page on January 3rd 2015.  The Admirals assigned Noonan to the ECHL on January 1st 2015.  Noonan went pointless in one game with the Cyclones.

Noonan attended the Nashville Predators development camp in July, before being released from the Predators Training Camp in October. In 27 games this season with Milwaukee Noonan has collected (4-goals-4-assists-8-points).

Noonan finished his fourth and final season at Boston University last year, signed a Entry-Level Deal with the Nashville Predators on April 22nd 2014 also signed an amateur try-out contract (ATO) with the American Hockey League (AHL) Milwaukee Admirals in April. Noonan was drafted by Nashville in Round 4 #112 overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In 34 games last season Noonan collected (4-goals-16-assists-20-points). Noonan played one season in Vernon (2009-2010) in 58 regular season games with the Vipers Noonan collected (2-goals-16-assists-18-points).

Snakes face daunting schedule to close out BCHL season

If there’s one quality the Vernon Vipers have demonstrated this B.C. Hockey League season, it’s resiliency.

Until last weekend, the Snakes hadn’t lost back-to-back games since they endured a three-game slide in late September. To end their January schedule with a pair of shutout losses to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks certainly stings, but their ability to bounce back has helped them earn a comfortable hold of second place in the Interior Division at 30-14-1-2.

Mark Ferner’s crew was looking to avoid a second three-game tailspin as they played a rare Tuesday nighter against the West Kelowna Warriors (23-20-0-6) at Royal LePage Place.

The Snakes will be grateful for their cushion in the standings as they will be away for all but three of their remaining 10 games. They begin a three-game road swing Friday against the Victoria Grizzlies (21-16-1-9) at The Q Centre. They then visit the Cowichan Valley Capitals (18-28-2-2) Saturday at Island Savings Centre, ending with a Sunday matinee against the Chilliwack Chiefs (28-16-1-1).

“It’s a tough month for sure,” said Ferner, following the Vipers’ game-day skate Tuesday. “We’re still in a fight. We’ve got some real tough games ahead.”

Angus Redmond recorded 23 saves for his second straight shutout, and fifth of the season, as the ‘Backs completed a home-and-home sweep of the Vipers in front of 2,000 fans Saturday night at the Shaw Centre.

Third star defenceman Phil Middleton buried his own rebound past second star Danny Todosychuk at the side of net with 1:44 to go in period one. Thomas Plese and Taylor Maruya assisted on the Vail, Colo. product’s fifth goal of the season.

“We played a good game, we just didn’t score,” said Ferner. “That’s one thing that sometimes you can’t control – how well their goalie plays. That said, you can’t let one player beat you.

“It (offence) dries up sometimes but as long as we’re playing well on the other side of the puck, I’m OK with it. It happens at the highest levels.”

Ferner isn’t about to hit the panic button following the weekend dry spell.

“Were not in a funk or anything. To hold a team to 22 or 23 shots, you feel like you’re giving yourself a chance,” he said. “Give Salmon Arm credit – they’re a desperate hockey team and trying to make playoffs.”

“The first night (3-0 loss Friday) we didn’t deserve the victory, but the second we played a lot better.”

The Warriors, who snapped a five-game skid with a 2-1 win over the visiting Merritt Centennials Saturday, were just two points ahead of the Gorillas (21-19-3-5) for the final Interior playoff spot heading into Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the North Okanagan Knights were heavily outshot in a 6-0 KIJHL loss to the Kelowna Chiefs Sunday afternoon at Nor-Val Sports Centre.

Dakota Little, Braeden Cyra and Josh Baird each collected a goal and an assist for the 19-23-2-2 Chiefs, who outshot the 6-38-1-4 Knights 51-16. Kelowna got other singles from Austin Dorn and Carter Melnyk.

Chris Turner finished with 16 stops for his third shutout. North Okanagan, losers of six straight, got 45 saves from Josh Shank.

SNAKE BITES: Vernon forward Mackenzie Bauer missed his sixth straight game to injury Tuesday, but is probable for weekend action...Forward Luke Voltin, out for the last five games, was expected to return against the Warriors...Redmond, a Langley native committed to Michigan Tech, was named BCHL Player of the Week. He gave up just one goal (1-0 loss to Penticton last Wednesday) in three games...Former Viper Adam Tambellini recorded two goals and two assists as the host Calgary Hitmen slammed the Prince Albert Raiders 10-1 in WHL play Friday. Tambellini, a third-round pick of the New York Rangers, leads the Hitmen with 37-26-63 in 50 games.

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Warriors game as West Kelowna defeated Vernon 2-0 in front of 946 fans at Royal Le Page Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

1st Period: The Vipers would get the games first chance of the night and early.  Colton McCarthy was able to get a quick back hand off from the slot with traffic in front but just missed the far corner.  Just over a minute later Warriors captain Andrew Johnson tried setting up Liam Blackburn on a two on one as Blackburn couldnt connect on the pass on a missed opportunity.  On the same shift and just seconds later Blackburn and Johnson would re-gain the puck on a Viper turnover inside their own end and get a second odd man rush, this time around Blackburn tried setting up Johnson who couldnt hit the net on two great chances for West Kelowna in the opening few minutes.  The Vipers then started getting their legs going and started to carry the play.  Vernon with pressure couldnt generate any real good quality chances as the Warriors defence was doing a good job at keeping the Vipers to the outside limiting their shots and chances. Just before the halfway mark West Kelowna would get the games first powerplay.  Just over a minute later the Warriors would get a five on three man advantage.  WK with good pressure didnt get alot of looks at the net as the Vipers penalty kill kept the Warriors to the outside.  Vernon would kill off the first PP just before Riley Brandt would go in alone from his own blueline for a shorthanded breakaway, Brandt being hooked on the play couldnt beat "AP" Stephen Heslop who made the save keeping this game scoreless.  Both teams would play a little four on four as West Kelowna was called for the hooking.  Vernon would get a late powerplay but unable to muster any real good chances as the Warriors killed off the remainder of the minor.  Just less then three minutes later West Kelowna would head back to the powerplay before getting a late five on three for a second time tonight.  For a second straight powerplay the Warriors with lots of pressure were moving the puck around before Jason Cotton was robbed by Danny Todosychuk who come across the blue paint to make a huge pad save off Cotton in the final minute.  Vernon with a good penalty kill got some timely saves from Todosychuk as the Vipers were able to kill off the first penalty were still down a man heading into the 2nd period.  It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play.  Each team would get a great opportunity in the opening few minutes but couldnt capitalize.  It was Vernon who got off to the good start carried the play early and often were the better team in the first half but didnt generate much offence.  The Warriors defence kept the Vipers to the outside limiting their chances.  Vernon would get into penalty trouble in the second half as the Warriors with two five on three's couldnt capitalize with the man advantage.  The Warriors had the better puck possession due to the two five on three powerplays.  The Vipers with some good penalty killing and goaltending were able to kill off the penalties.  Vernon outshot West Kelowna 14-10.

2nd Period:  The Warriors started the frame with the man advantage that was carried over from the end of the opening period.  Brayden Gelsinger was robbed by Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk who for a second time tonight had to come across the crease to make another huge pad save keeping this game scoreless.  The Vipers with another big penalty kill would kill off the remainder of the minor.  WK kept coming as the Warriors looked to have a slight edge in play.  The Warriors playing with alot of jump and energy to start the second period were buzzing early and often.  West Kelowna with lots of pressure early were moving the puck around had good looks at the net but couldnt beat Todosychuk.  Todosychuk had to be sharp made a tough save with the puck squeezed up against his pad and the post as the Warriors tried jamming the loose puck in.  West Kelowna may have had the better of the play but like the Vipers couldnt generate much offence early.  The Vipers would get their second powerplay of the night just before the halfway mark.  The Vipers with good puck possession couldnt get anything going as again the Warriors defence did a great job at boxing the Vipers out as West Kelowna would kill off the minor.  The Vipers turned things around in the second half picking up their game.  Vernon slowly started to come on turning the tides as now the Vipers were carrying the play and had a ton of pressure deep in the WK zone.  With seven and a half minutes remaining Anthony Latina setup Liam Finlay with the Vipers best opportunity of the frame just missed the far corner on a great chance from the high slot.  Vernon looking like they were on a PP were moving the puck around, unable to generate any real good looks.  On every second whistle or stopage in play lots of altercations after the whitsle as some pushing and shoving occurred.  It was still 0-0 after 40 minutes of play.  The Warriors with a strong start to the period come out with lots of jump and energy outplayed the Vipers early and often couldnt beat Danny Todosychuk on a few good quality chances.  The Vipers would turn the tables and come back in the second half with a strong finish to the period outplayed West Kelowna but with just one real good chance didnt generate much for offence.  Vernon outshot West Kelowna 14-10.

3rd Period: The Warriors got off to a quick start and come out strong.  West Kelowna jumped on the Vipers early who were back on their heels.  The Warriors with a few good chances in the opening minutes were on the attack.  WK looked like they were on the powerplay.  Moving the puck around spotted Tanner Campbell in the slot who couldnt beat Todosychuk who made a big save.  Just a few shifts later Todosychuk somehow made a huge save off Tyler Kunz's point shot that was re-directed on its way to the net.  On their heels early Vernon would get forced into taking an early penalty giving the Warriors another powerplay.  Less then fourty seconds later West Kelowna would get their third two man advantage of the game and make the Vipers pay.  With lots of open ice the Warriors moved the puck around before Tanner Campbell spotted a wide open Liam Blackburn who had two cracks at the puck before beating a diving Todosychuk giving West Kelowna a 1-0 lead at 7:10 Campbell with the assist.  WK still on the man advantage went back to work but a strong finish to the penalty kill and the Vipers would kill off the minor.  West Kelowna all over Vernon as the Vipers with just three shots in the first half of the period.  Just minutes after killing off the penalty Vernon would get thier third powerplay.  The Vipers struggled with the man advantage as West Kelowna would kill off the minor.  Vernon would get a great chance in the second half Thomas Aldworth tried setting up Liam Coughlin on a Viper two on one but a Warriors defenceman (didnt see who it was) come up with a huge defensive play to break up Aldworth's pass. Just over a minute later the Vipers would get a late powerplay that lasted just seconds after Vernon would get a penalty as both teams played some four on four.  While four on four Mac Ferner would give the Warriors a two goal lead after a blast from the point beat Danny Todosychuk who looked to be screened on the play giving West Kelowna a 2-0 lead at 15:59 Andrew Johnson with the helper.  Still four on four the Vipers with some late pressure had all kinds of troubles getting pucks to the net as time was winding down the Vipers would eventually get Todosychuk to the bench for the extra attacker with 1:25 remaining.  A late Vernon timeout and the Vipers pushed for a goal.  Missing the net on several occasions the Vipers just couldnt generate much for offence.  Liam Blackburn and Andrew Johnson both missed long shots at the open cage before the Warriors would eventually tie the puck and Vipers up in their own end to kill off the remaining seconds to come away with the 2-0 victory.  This period was basically all Warriors as West Kelowna come out with a strong third period.  The Warriors with lots of jump were all over Vernon early and often pouring on the pressure getting some good chances early.  The Vipers would get into penalty trouble and it cost them as WK scored the first goal of the night wich was huge at this point in the hockey game.  The Vipers back on their heels just couldnt get anything going most of the period.  Down two goals the Vipers come on late with some pressure but again no real good chances.  West Kelowna with a solid final twenty minutes picked up a huge win.  Vernon outshot West Kelowna 10-9.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Kenny Citron I thought was the Vipers most physical player, layed the body, was strong on the backend played very well for the Vipers tonight.

Mitch Meek was another defenceman that I thought looked and played good through out the game.  Jumped up into the play carried the puck from time to time played with confidence.

Liam Finlay was flying most of the night, went down in the 2nd period and was slow to get up went awkwardly to the Viper bench before being looked at.  Was ok and stayed in the game.  Was one of if not the lone Viper that played with a ton of intensity.  Really buzzing, moving in and out of bodies trying to create or generate some kind of offence for the Vipers.

Danny Todosychuk (31 saves) How good has the Vipers goaltender been the last three games?  Todosychuk has played very very well the last three games making some huge saves, keeping his team in most of the three games.  Tonight the Vernon native was the more busier of the two goaltenders having to make the more difficult saves.  Todosychuk made two huge pad saves late in the 1st and early in the 2nd period keeping this game scoreless.  Was very good on the penalty kill made some timely saves through out the game.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

The Vipers have now lost three straight games for the first time this season and have been shutout in all three games.  On the drive home from Salmon Arm Saturday I was thinking to myself wondering if any team has been shutout back to back games? I was trying to think back if a Vernon team has ever been shutout in back to back games and I couldnt recall such a thing.  Now its three straight games without a goal.  This has to be some kind of BCHL record?  Does anyone know?  The Vipers offence has dried up and are now 0-2 on this six game road trip.  I thought the Vipers had a good start to the game carried the better of the play atleast in the first half before getting into penalty trouble.  I thought Vernon was the better of the two teams in the 2nd period but again got into penalty trouble.  The Vipers may have been the better of the two teams for most of the 1st and 2nd periods but didnt generate much scoring chances.  Most of Vernon's shots were from well outside, no traffic in front or bodies going to the net.  Give some credit to the Warriors defence who did box the Vipers out and limit their shots and chances but the Vipers still have to bare down and dig deep in games like this.  The Vipers were back on their heels early to start the 3rd and couldnt recover were outplayed most of the frame and again got into penalty trouble.  The Vipers with way too many penalties.  Graham Turnbull said it best on the post game show, the Vipers were fighting the referee all night.  Give credit to Vernon's penalty kill wich was busy and did a pretty good job.  When the Vipers did manage to get some pressure late in the game, again no real good chances or else missed the net.  I didnt think Vernon played with the same compete level as they did in the 1-0 loss in Salmon Arm Saturday.  The Vipers needed to get more bodies and traffic going to the net, especially with an "AP" goaltender between the pipes.  Make his night miserable, do whatever it takes to try and get him off his game.  Get lots of pucks to the net and go to the net for the rebounds-second opportunities.  The Vipers didnt make Heslop work for the shutout, Vernon didnt make Heslop have to make any spectacular saves.  Since the home and home series vs Coquitlam the Vipers have been incosistant and in all but one game yet to play a full sixty minutes.  I also noticed the Vipers are not going to the net like they use to, staying to the outside, not jumping on rebounds and dont seem to be playing with that same intensity.  Game three of this six game road trip goes Friday in Victoria.  This is a good time for the boys to get out of town, get away from the normal routines through out the day and spend time quality time away on the bus, in the hotels, on the road together for some team bonding.  The one good thing about this little rough patch the Vipers are in right now is atleast they have a decent lead in the standings where a few losses wont hurt them.  Imagine if they were in a dog fight for the final playoff spot right now, these games could be the season.  This was the final regular season meeting between these two teams as the Vipers win the season series 4-3. 

Top Players: (West Kelowna)

Jason Cotton I thought was good for most parts of the game, was dangerous when down low.  Was robbed late in the opening frame after getting stopped by Danny Todosychuk who made a huge pad save keeping the game scoreless.  Cotton who seems to play well vs the Vipers was skating hard tonight.

Tanner Campbell (1 assist) I thought was really flying most of the night, made a nice pass to setup Liam Blackburn for the Warriors first goal of the game.  Played with lots of jump and energy didnt quit skating all night.

Tyler Kunz I thought played a heck of a game on the West Kelowna blueline.  Was very solid all night.

Nick Rutigliano was another d-man that played well on the backend.

Liam Blackburn (1 goal) Had a great opportunity early in the 1st couldnt connect on a two on one pass from Andrew Johnson then returned the favor by setting up Johnson on the same shift who couldnt capitalize on a second two on one.  Blackburn was skating well, played well through out the game.  Didnt get alot of scoring opportunities was involved in the play.

Stephen Heslop (33 saves) Playing in just his third game of the season, picked up his first career win and first career BCHL shutout making 33 saves.  Playing in two games last season with Cowichan Heslop was called up as an "AP with starting goaltender Andy Desautels out of the Warriors lineup.  Heslop who kicked out a few rebounds wasnt forced into making any real big saves saw most of Vernon's 33 shots, made the saves when needed played well in replace of Andy Desautels.

Game Thought's: (West Kelowna)

After snapping a five game losing streak Saturday with a huge 2-1 win over the Merritt Centennials the Warriors pickup another huge win over Vernon tonight to climb into 3rd place two points up on Merritt and four points up on Salmon Arm who the Warriors will face Friday.  Tonight was just their six win in their last seventeen games pick up a huge win.  I thought Vernon was the better of the two teams for most of the 1st and 2nd periods had the better of the play.  West Kelowna had the better of the scoring chances and more powerplays but couldnt beat Danny Todosychuk.  Whatever was said between periods worked as the Warriors responded with a strong start to the 3rd and never let up as West Kelowna outplayed the Vipers most of the final frame.  WK had Vernon back on their heels early and often forcing the Vipers into penalties.  The Warriors could have put this game away earlier if they would have connected on a few PP goals.  West Kelowna with a huge goal on the two man advantage would open the scoring and basically never look back.  Give credit to the Warriors defence who played very well, kept the Vipers to the outside most of the night, limited their shots and chances.  Hanging on to the final playoff spot needed a huge game and a huge win in order to stay ahead of the Silverbacks.  The Warriors are basically in playoff mode now needing wins on almost every night will travel to Salmon Arm Friday for a huge matchup with the Silverbacks.  The Penticton Vees coaching staff was in attendance tonight.

2014 Okanagan Sports Hall Of Fame Odie Lowe Tribute Video:

Here is a tribute video on former Vernon Canadians forward & Head Coach Odie Lowe.  Lowe was recently inducted into the Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame in November 2014.

Lowe played four games with the New York Rangers in 1949-50 then spent a couple years in the minors before spending the last nine years of his career in the senior Okanagan league, playing with the Vernon Canadians.  Lowes best season was a league high 61 goals and 114 points in 1956-57. Before retiring in 1961 Lowe finished his last three seasons with 30 goals in each of the final three years. Lowe led Vernon to the 1956 Allan Cup and three BC titles in a decade.  Lowe put together Vernon's first Junior A team in 1961, and coached the franchise to a pair of BCJHL championships.  After retirement Lowe coached the Vernon Canadians in 1961-62 & then coached the Vernon Essos from 1967-1973.

For the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, playoff mode began before the B.C. Hockey League’s Christmas break.

The ‘Backs looked like a team already in a playoff game instead of battling for their playoff lives Friday night, as they shut out the Vernon Vipers 3-0 in front of 2,408 fans at Kal Tire Place.

The loss snapped Vernon’s nine-game home ice winning streak.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Salmon Arm native Shane Danyluk, a fortmer Prince Albert Raider who had 1+1 and was named third star. “We’re in the middle of a playoff push right now and it’s nice to get a W here in Vernon.

“I think we’ve been in the playoff mind set since a week before Christmas. Every day we come in and it’s like a do-or-die mentality. It’s nice to get two points after a tough couple of losses.”

The two teams played the back end of the weekend home-and-home series Saturday night at the Shaw Centre.

The win snapped a three-game losing slide for the Silverbacks (20-18-3-5), and ended Vernon’s modest two-game winning streak. Each team has 12 regular season games remaining.

Salmon Arm moved to within two points of the West Kelowna Warriors for the fourth and final Interior Division playoff spot. The Warriors lost 7-3 Friday in Merritt, the Centennials moving into sole possession of third place, two points ahead of West Kelowna and 11 back of the second-place Snakes.

Vernon (30-13-1-2) fell 14 points behind the division-leading Penticton Vees, 4-3 winners Friday before 2,043 fans at home over the last-place Trail Smoke Eaters.

After a scoreless opening frame, second period deflections off point shots – after the Vipers failed to clear their zone – by forwards Danyluk (ninth goal) and Thomas Plese (sixth) gave Salmon Arm a 2-0 cushion heading into the third.

Danyluk’s deflection through the legs of Vipers goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn was Salmon Arm’s first goal in nearly 89 minutes over its last three games.

Forward Taylor Maruya (third) scored on a wraparound with less than three minutes left to round out the scoring.

Goalie Angus Redmond made 31 saves to register his fourth shutout of the season, as Vernon outshot the Gorillas 31-22, including 11-3 in the third period.

Redmond was named the game’s first star, though he was quick to spread the credit to his team, and especially his defence who threw up a wall against the Vipers’ snipers.

“The guys really stepped it up today and blocked a ton of shots in front of me, and our offence capitalized on our opportunities,” said Redmond. “It’s nice to get the two points.”

Redmond’s best saves came in the first period, stopping Colton McCarthy on a breakaway after McCarthy was sent in alone on a beautiful pass from Johnny Coughlin. Redmond made the save with his catching glove, but lost the puck.

“I shook out my pad in the dressing room in between periods and it was in there,” laughed Redmond. “I have no idea what it got hung up on.”

In the third, Vernon defenceman Brandon Egli was allowed to walk in from the point but he wired a shot right into Redmond’s mid-section.

Vernon Fortis Energy player of the game Riley Brandt missed a glorious chance in the middle frame when he walked in alone on Redmond, deked him, but slid the puck wide of the open net.

“You have to credit them a little bit, they’re playing well right now, but I don’t think the effort was there for us tonight,” said Viper alternate captain, defenceman Kenny Citron.

The game Saturday in Salmon Arm marked the start of six straight road contests for the Vipers. Vernon’s next home game is Friday, Feb. 13 against the Silverbacks.
