Vernon 14 Cowichan Valley 0

Was at tonights BCHL game as Vernon defeated Cowichan Valley 14-0 in front of 1,802 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Blake Voth
Cowichan Valley: Laurent Brossoit

1st Period: Before tonights game the Vipers held a moment of scilence for former PA announcer Wayne Buck who passed away earlier this week at the age of 68. Cowichan Valley would get the first good scoring chance just over two minutes into the game after Mike Hammond went in behind the Vernon defence but was stopped by Blake Voth. Shortly after the Vipers would get the first powerplay of the night but couldnt take advantage. Vernon wouldnt look back after dominating the remainder of the period from here on in. Connor Jones out waited Laurent Brossoit before putting an unreal move on the Caps goaltender, before going high giving the Vipers the 1-0 lead at 6:56 Kellen Jones with the lone assist. Just over two minutes later with the Capitals on the powerplay Connor Jones would score his 2nd goal of the night shorthanded after Kellen Jones picked up his 2nd assist of the night. The Vipers had the better of the chances and this was while shorthanded, Cowichan Valley was up 2-0 in shots early but were now being outshot 8-3. Vernon would kill off the minor as the Vipers would explode for six goals in the next seven minutes. Rob Short & Cole Ikkala went in two on one, Ikkala beat Brossoit at 11:53 putting Vernon up 3-0, Short & Dylan Walchuk collected assists. This was the end of the night for Brossoit as he was pulled in favor of former Victoria Grizzly Alexandre Peck. Brossoit gave up three goals on just nine Vernon shots. Off the next faceoff Mike Collins would collect the puck, skate in over the Caps line and beat Peck at 11:42 putting the Vipers up 4-0. Braden Pimm collected the lone assist. Aaron McGill then gave Collins a shot to the head while celebrating his goal, Collins gave a crosscheck back to McGill as both players headed to the box. Cowichan Valley would call a timeout, and make a quick goaltenders change once again. Peck was now pulled after allowing one goal on one shot, as Brossoit headed back between the pipes for Cowichan. The Vipers didnt led up there, just seconds later Braden Pimm put Vernon up 5-0 and in full control scoring at 12:08 Mike Collins & Bryce Kakoske would pick up the assists. Just seconds after Pimms goal Sawyer Mick would beat Brossoit at 12:35 as the goals kept coming. Kellen Jones would get the lone assist. Cowichan Valley started hitting hard as the period went on, going after the Vipers with some decent checks. Just three minutes later Kellen Jones scored at 15:23 putting Vernon up 7-0 Sawyer Mick & Connor Jones collected assists. Vernon completely dominated the opening period having the puck on a string, as anything the the Vipers through on net, ended up going in. The Capitals would record just one shot in the final 10 minutes of the period. Connor Jones would get his third of the night in the final minute at 19:32 putting the Vipers up 8-0. Mike Collins & Nick Amies picked up the assists. The Vipers were up 8-0 after 20 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Cowichan Valley 17-4.

2nd Period: With the Vipers on a powerplay Cole Ikkala would defeat Brossoit at 1:43 as the Vipers jumped ahead 9-0. Garrett Noonan would collect the assist. The Vipers would take their foot off the gas as the play seemed to slow down a little, it looked more like a pond hockey game for most of the 2nd. Even with Vernon taking their foot of the gas the Vipers still dominated the edge in play. Vernon with many chances took the pass instead of going for the shot, in some areas the Vipers were forced to take the shot. Mark Ferner rested his top two lines for most of the period and the Vipers still carried most of the play. Cory Kane went in for the parcial breakaway but was stopped by Brossoit in close. Vernon with five powerplays could have blowen this game wide open. Cowichan Valley couldnt generate any offence, as the Caps were having troubles even getting control of the puck. This is what kind of night it was, Rob Short stepped over the blueline taking a shot towards the net, and somehow the puck went in as Shorts long shot beat Brossoits glove at 14:14 Dylan Walchuk with the assist. Just seconds later Connor Jones scored his fourth of the night at 14:56 as the Vipers went up 11-0. Kellen Jones & Jonathan Milhouse collected the assists. Just under a minute later Garrett Noonan walked in from the point, untouched Noonan found the back of the net at 15:44. This was Noonan's first career BCHL goal, Braden Pimm & Kevin Kraus with the assists. The Vipers were up 12-0 after 40 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Cowichan Valley 13-2.

3rd Period: Off the opening draw Eric Soderlund who made his Vipers debut tonight went for the big hit, wich forced a two on one. Joey Massingham fed Nick Anderson at the side of the net who missed the net on a great scoring chance. Cowichan would get a powerplay early to start the 3rd but it was Vernon who had the better scoring chances. Kellen Jones & Jonathan Milhouse went in two on one, Jones fed Milhouse who was stopped by Brossoit who made a nice pad save. The Caps couldnt get the puck out of their zone, as Milhouse stole the loose puck going in for the parcial breakaway but was stopped again by Brossoit. On the same penalty kill Cory Kane just about stole the puck from a Cowichan d-men wich would have sent Kane in for the breakaway. The Vipers penalty kill looked very strong, getting three or four real sild scoring chances. Vernon would kill off the minor after the Caps didnt record a single shot on the man advantage. Connor Jones would score his fifth goal of the night at 3:54 putting Vernon up 13-0. Kellen Jones & Sawyer Mick collected the assists. Vernon once again sat back for most of the period as the Capitals would get their best chances of the night. Blake Voth had to make his biggest save of the night after a scramble in front of the Vipers net with the puck bouncing around Voth made two nice saves in close to keep his shutout bid alive. Chapen LeBlond with a nice move around a Vernon d-man, cut wide and then got a quick shot off from the circle but was stopped by Voth. After recording just six shots in the first two periods the Capitals now had six shots already in the final frame. Sawyer Mick with some good hustle went in for the breakaway but was stopped by Brossoit who made some good saves in the 3rd after giving up 12 goals prior. The Vipers with some good quality chances could have had another two or three goals but Brossoit made some big saves. Cole Ikkala was stopped in front after coming close to scoring his third goal of the night. Cowichan would get five powerplays in the 3rd but couldnt capitalize. The Caps with a two man advantage still couldnt buy a goal after some strong penalty kill by the Vipers. Rob Short with a wicked shot from the circle beat Brossoit for his 2nd goal of the night put Vernon up 14-0 at 12:23. Shorts goal was unassisted. Brendon MacDonald with a quick shot from in close couldnt beat Voth after some pushing and shoving evolved after the whistle. Connor Jones with a great chance late was stopped by Brossoit after coming close to scoring his sixth goal of the game. The Vipers would hang on for the 14-0 victory improving to 10-1 as Blake Voth made 16 saves for his first career BCHL shutout. Shots were even 10 each.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Eric Soderlund made his Vipers debut tonight after having troubles getting his release from his former US Hockey team. Soderlund looked very solid, not missing a beat, especially for a kid who hasnt played since the pre season. Soderlund adds some much needed size to the Vernon blueline. I was very impressed and really liked this kid during training camp and the pre season & now tonight.

The line of Connor Jones (5 goals & 1 assist), Kellen Jones (1 goal & 5 assists) & Cory Kane (2 assists) looked very dangerous up front. Connor & Kellen made it look so easy tonight, both kids looked like they had the puck on a string. It didnt matter what Connor through on net, somehow the puck ended up in the back of the net. Connor was one goal away from tying the Vipers goal of most goals in a game. Former Vipers Captain scored six goals in a Playoff game vs Cowichan Valley back in 1996 wich is a BCHL record.

Cole Ikkala (2 goals & 1 assist) Played a heck of a game. Ikkala who looked very strong last night played very well again tonight. Nice to see Cole do well in front of his father who was up for tonights game. Ikkala come close in the 3rd to recording his first career BCHL hattrick.

Rob Short (2 goals & 1 assist) Played his second straight strong game. Nice to see Short back in the Vipers lineup after missing the last eight games with a leg injury. Short adds alot to the team and it has showed in back to back games. Short is by far the Vipers best penalty killer and adds alot of jump and energy to the team.

Sawyer Mick (1 goal & 2 assists) Looked very good for Vernon tonight. Mick played well getting some good chances while Mark Ferner sat his top two lines in the 2nd period. Mick had a great chance to get his 2nd goal of the night, but was stopped on a breakaway in the 3rd.

Garrett Noonan (1 goal & 1 assist) Played very well on the backend. Noonan looked very good at both ends of the rink, nice to see him score his first career BCHL goal.

Top Players: (Cowichan Valley)

Brendon MacDonald showed lots of grit and hustle all night. No matter what the score was, this kid was skating hard, battling in the gray areas and didnt back down from the rough stuff. Was in the face of many Vipers, yapping back and forth with Vipers Captain Kevin Kraus and then got into a minor scrum in front of the Vernon net after being stopped by Blake Voth.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

Wow what a game! I would have never expected a game like this. The Vipers put on a clinic in the 1st period and most of the game. Vernon took its foot off the gas as this could have easily been a 20-0 final score. The Vipers had all the bounces and luck tonight, it didnt seem to matter what they through on net, the puck ended up in the back of the goal. Vernon was clicking all game, with some highlite real goals and plays. You have to wonder if the Vipers broke any BCHL records with some of the teams goals in the 1st period, their were a few that were seconds apart. Vernon looked like they had the puck on a string most of the game. Vernon had 11 players that had two or more points tonight. With the addition of Eric Soderlund, the Vipers now have a 24 man roster, whos the odd man out? Drew George sat out his 2nd game as a healthy scratch, you have to wonder of his days are numbered?

Game Thoughts: (Cowichan Valley)

Other then the Caps getting some chances in the 3rd after the Vipers sat back for most of the period, Cowichan dosnt have much of a team. This is one of the biggest blowouts I have seen in many many years, one of the biggest blowouts I can recall watching was back in 1996 when Trail first joined the league and the Vipers blew out the Smoke Eaters one night at home 17-2. The Capitals didnt have much going all night, having all kinds of trouble keeping the puck out of their own net and zone. Cowichan Valley couldnt stop the Vipers speed and skill up front, they allowed several Viper players to walk right in being out touched. The look on Scott Robinsons face said it all, Robsinson looked stunned each and everytime the Vipers found the back of the net, anyone know why he pulled Brossoit after giving up three goals, putting in Peck & then giving Peck the yank after giving up one goal on one shot and then leaving Brossoit in goal for the remainder of the night? Cowichan looked awfull and one of the worst performances I have seen in years.

Short Is Overtime Hero For Vipers:

Short is overtime hero for vipers

by Don Klepp Added 2009-10-10

Rob Short’s return from injury paid off for the Vipers as his goal at 2.30 in the first overtime led to a 2-1 win in Penticton. Short had not played since the first game of the season on September 10. He skated on a line with centre Dylan Walchuk and winger Cole Ikkala, which was arguably the best line for either team in a smoothly played, tightly contested affair. Leading to the winning goal, Dylan Walchuk won a battle at the Penticton blue line and fed Short who came in from the line. As Short deked a defenceman and prepared to shoot, Walchuk went hard to the net, drawing the other defenceman with him. Short’s hard wrist shot appeared to glace in off Walchuk, but after the game he confirmed that the shot caromed off the defenceman. The game was a scorekeeper’s dream with just the three goals and six penalties called by referee Matt Thurston. Both teams worked very hard on defence, and were careful to get caught in a minimum of odd-man situations. The strategy made sense, especially because the first two goals resulted from 2 on 1 rushes. After a scoreless first period, Mike Collins staked the Vipers to a 1-0 lead at 13.25 of the second period. Jonathon Milhouses’s headmanned pass sent Braden Pimm and Collins into the offensive zone at speed. A soft, precise Pimm backhand feed allowed Collins to one-time the puck over Sean Bonar’s shoulder. As the game progressed, Vernon’s five-man defence kept the Vees at bay until well into the third period. A soft Viper pass at centre was picked off by Joey Holka, who went into the Viper zone with Alex Szczechura against a single Viper defender. The two Vees crashed the crease and Szczechura slipped the puck under Graeme Gordon, who was bundled over on the play. So, with 4.49 remaining in the third, Graeme Gordon lost a shutout and set the stage for overtime. Penticton opened overtime with two defencemen and two forwards, while Mark Ferner sent out the Jones twins and Cory Kane together with D-man Dan Nycholat. Coach Ferner stuck with this strategy and it paid off as it had in the Vipers’ 4-3 OT win in Salmon Arm on September 11. It’s easy to see why these two teams are ranked first and second in Canadian Jr. A hockey; each squad oozed class in this game, with smooth breakouts, slick passing, high-speed plays, and clean hits. Clearly, the Vipers and Vees are evenly matched and quite willing to word hard. In the final analysis, the Vipers won the statistical battle as well as the game. They had 27 shots to Penticton’s 24; they out-chanced the Vees 14 to 8; the out hit their South Okanagan neighbours 22 to 12. Still, the Vees had ample opportunities to win this game in front of 2102 fans. When the likes of Denver Manderson and Ryan Viselli were able to get a good chance, Graeme Gordon was there to shut the door. His positional play, quick feet, and rebound control earned him a second star in this game. Unaccountably, Penticton’s Jake Johnson, a Minnesotan who has just joined the Vees, was named first star, and Penticton’s Alex Szczechura got the third star nod. Several Vees and Vipers played more prominent roles in this game.

Vernon 2 Penticton 1 (Overtime)

Was at tonights BCHL game as Vernon defeated Penticton 2-1 in Overtime in front of 2,102 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Graeme Gordon
Penticton: Sean Bonar

1st Period: A bit of a slow start as Penticton iced the puck on the first few plays before the Vees sustained some early pressure. Alex Szczechura with a wicked shot from the circle graized the post after having Grame Gordon beat. Penticton really looked strong breaking through the neutral zone, with some quality scoring plays. As the Vipers settled down both teams wernt giving alot of room, in a fairly tight checking period. The Vipers who were driving towards the net in the period got some good quality shots on Sean Bonar as Vernon was up in shots 7-2 at one point. Pentictons best scoring chance came when Logan Johnston and Captain Denver Manderson went in two on one, Johnston setup Manderson who missed the empty net firing wide. Vernons best scoring chance came after a point shot was tipped in front by Sawyer Mick before Bonar made the last minute save. Graeme Gordon looked a little shaky in the opening period, the Vees dumped the puck in from just inside the blueline, Gordon went down to grab the puck with his glove as the puck bounced over his glove and just missed the net. Gordon was caught looking behind him on several shots after having trouble fighting the puck. Gordons biggest save come after a huge pad save on Garrett Milan from in the slot. A fairly even period as both teams had some chances. It was scoreless after 20 minutes as the Vipers outshot the Vees 12-10.

2nd Period: The Vees looked strong in the first half of the period with some pressure in the Vipers zone but couldnt come up with any real solid scoring chances. Penticton would get the first powerplay of the night but it was Vernons penalty kill wich looked very strong killing off the minor. The Vees best scoring chance of the 2nd come when a Penticton player missed a wide open net at the side of the net with Gordon down and out. The Vipers couldnt generate much of an offensive attack in the first half of the period as the Vees did a great job at shutting down Vernons offence. The Vipers struggled with their passes most of the night, wich caused a few turn overs coming out from their own end. The Vipers line of Cole Ikkala, Rob Short & Dylan Walchuk got the Vipers going in the second half of the period with some good cycle down low, really sustaining pressure deep in the Vees zone, Penticton had troubles with this line as the Vipers moved the puck well down low, trying to generate some offence. This line seemed to give te Vipers some spark, shortly after Braden Pimm & Mike Collins broke in down the wing, Pimm setup Collins with a nice pass through a Penticton player, as Collins went high over Bonar at 13:25 putting Vernon up 1-0. Jonathan Milhouse & Braden Pimm collected the assists. This goal gave Vernon life as the Vipers kept up the strong forecheck and pressure down low, coming up with some good pressure in the Vees zone. Vernon with some good chances down low carried the better of the play in the second half and were up 1-0 after 40 minutes of play. Shots were even 7-7.

3rd Period: Braden Pimm in the opening minute was battling hard in front of the Vees net, couldnt get his stick on the loose puck wich was laying in the crease with a scrum going on, as the Vees cleared the zone after the Vipers come close to going up 2-0. Vernon would get its first powerplay just over two minutes into the 3rd but was unable to click on the man advantage. Just as the penalty was coming to an end, the Vipers were called for a penalty in the Penticton zone as the Vees went on their second man advantage of the night. Vernon would kill off the minor and then just four minutes later head back to the powerplay but struggled as the Vees killed off the minor. Vernons 2nd line of Braden Pimm, Jonathan Milhouse & Mike Collins started clicking getting some chances. Penticton was really trying hard, sending in the winger inbehind the Vernon defence, trying to catch the Vipers d-men napping. Garrett Milan with a shot from the circle was stopped by Gordon. The Vees seemed to get life late in the period moving the puck well down low, but couldnt get many quality chances. Penticton once again looked very strong breaking out of their own end, coming through the neutral zone. The Vipers couldnt clear the zone after coughing up the puck inside the blueline, turning over the puck late in the 3rd, as newcomer Jake Johnson skated over the blueline, and then cut towards the goal and wired his shot off the crossbar after beating Gordon. The Vees putting up good pressure late would tie the game just several minutes later. Cole Ikkala turned over the puck in the neutral zone, Joey Holka made a pass over to Alex Szczechura who cut wide going around the Vernon d-men, drove hard towards the goal and somehow lifted his shot over Graeme Gordon at 15:11 before crashing into Gordon and the net. The puck would cross the line before Gordon was knocked into the net. Joey Holka assisted on the goal. It was tied 1-1 after 60 minutes of play. Shots were even 7-7.

Overtime: A very tight checking period with both teams trying not to make the first mistake. Vernons first line of Connor Jones, Kellen Jones, Cory Kane & Dan Nycholat couldnt get off as the Vees couldnt take advantage of a tired Vipers line. The Vees one and only scoring chance came when Isaac MacLeod shot wide from in the slot, before the play turned over as Dylan Walchuk & Rob Short come back the other way, Walchuck made a nice pass across the blueline to Short who cut wide and then shot from the circle wich beat Bonar fivehole at 2:38 giving the Vipers the Overtime winner. Vernon outshot Penticton 1-0.

Top Players: (Vernon)

The line of Cole Ikkala, Rob Short (1 goal) & Dylan Walchuk (1 assist) was Vernons best line. This line really got things turned around for the Vipers, giving them some much need spark in the second half of the 2nd period. All three kids were very good down low with the cycle. Short returned to the lineup tonight after being out with a leg injury wich he suffered in the teams home opener. Short really adds alot to the Vipers lineup and it showed tonight.

The Vipers 2nd line of Braden Pimm (1 assist), Mike Collins (1 goal) and Jonathan Milhouse (1 assist) played very well. Pimm was solid on the draw winning most of his faceoffs, was very hard all night to knock off the puck, showed alot of hustle and determination down low. Collins scored a real nice goal in the 2nd period.

Kevin Kraus played a very solid defensive game on the Vipers blueline. Kraus really settled down the backend, making some heads up plays all night.

Graeme Gordon (24 saves) looked shaky in the opening period, really fighting the puck but seemed to settle down as the game went on. Didnt have many big saves to make, but did play well.

Top Players: (Penticton)Alex Szczechura (1 goal) Looked very good up front for the Vees. Had several good chances.

Logan Johnston played a strong game up front. Had some chances, played well at both ends of the rink.

Sean Bonar (25 saves) Almost went five straight periods of shutout hockey vs the Vipers. Bonar once again played well against Vernon. Made some key saves to keep the Vees in the game.

Garrett Milan was very dangerous most of the night. Milan had several good quality chances, was buzzing all night long. Played a fairly physical game, especially in the 3rd. Played with alot of energy.

Matt Paltridge played a solid defensive game on the Vees blueline.

Jake Johnson made his Penticton debut tonight after signing with the Vees the other day after playing in the USHL. Johnson is quick, can really skate and has a heck of a shot. This kid was dangerous with the puck all night. I was very impressed.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

The Vipers improved to 9-1 with the win and now are just three points back of the Vees for top spot in the Interior Division with three games in hand. Vernon played very well tonight, picking up a greasy road win. The Vipers managaed to get traffic in front of Bonar, driving towards the net alot tonight. Vernon did a great job at shutting down the Vees top point getters in Denver Manderson & Beau Bennett. I also was impressed with the Vipers defence, keeping the Vees to the outside, most of the Vees shots were from the outside. Vipers struggled with passing at times. Tonight was a big win, after losing to the Vees at home last weekend, the Vipers got some revenge and now have confidence knowing they can play with and beat the Vees.

Game Thoughts: (Penticton)

Tonights Overtime loss was the Vees first loss on home ice. A fairly entertaining hockey game and well worth the trip up to Penticton. Both teams couldnt capitalize on the powerplay. Penticton couldnt burry their chances and Vernon did, the Vees with some great scoring chances couldnt capitalize. The Vees really moved the puck well tonight, using their speed and skill up front Penticton looked very strong breaking out of their own end. Penticton tried catching the Vipers defence napping, trying for the long stretch passes up the middle and also tried sending the wingers inbehind the d-men. The Vees did a great job at shutting down the Vipers #1 line of Cory Kane, Connor Jones & Kellen Jones. The Jones Twins are knowen for man handling the Vees in years past, tonight they couldnt get much of anything going all night. Both teams are fairly even and matchup very well against one another.

Vernon has scored 34 goals and given up just 15 so far this season with the leagues best goals against. The Vipers are 3-0 on the road. In order for the Vipers to defeat the Vees tonight, Vernon is going to once again have to get lots of pucks and traffic towards Sean Bonar who played very well Saturday against the Vipers in the 2-0 win. Specialty teams will also be key and the Vipers need to get their powerplay clicking after going a dreadfull 1-15 in its last three games. The Vees have the leagues second best powerplay, so Vernon will have to try and stay out of the box. Vernon is really going to have to get more quality chances and shots on Bonar, and really have to keep their eyes on Denver Manderson & Beau Bennett who are very dangerous with the puck.

Players To Watch:

Mike Collins (7-7-14)
Braden Pimm (2-9-11)
Dylan Walchuk (3-7-10)
Jonathan Milhouse (5-5-10)
Cory Kane (5-2-7)
Dan Nycholat (0-7-7)
Connor Jones (1-6-7)
Kellen Jones (1-5-6)
Cole Ikkala (2-4-6)
Kevin Kraus (1-4-5)
Adam Thompson (1-4-5)
Graeme Gordon (7-1 Record-1 Shutout-1.75 GAA)

Let’s take a look at the Penticton Vees:

The Vees currently sit in top spot overall in the BCHL with a 10-2 record sitting four points ahead of the 2nd place Vernon Vipers (8-1) Penticton is coming off a big 6-1 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals Wednesday night at home. The Vees who are the first team to defeat the Vipers this year will be looking at giving the Vipers their second loss of the season. Penticton is loaded up front scoring a league high 61 goals, and giving up 31 goals. The Vees are 5-0 on home ice and 8-2 in their last 10 games. Penticton has four players in the leagues top 20 in scoring, (Denver Manderson, Beau Bennett, Garrett Milan, & Alex Szczechura) The Vees will want to get a lot of pucks and traffic on Graeme Gordon who is the leagues 2nd best goaltender. Penticton will have to watch Vernons speed and depth up front who can roll all four lines. The Vees will have their handsfull with the Vipers top line of Cory Kane and the Jones Twins who are always dangerous with the cycle down low. Tonights matchup has the makeup for a great playoff like game as both teams don’t like one another. Make sure and check out Ryan Pinder’s Penticton Vees blog, http://pentictonvees.podbean.com/ for all the latest info and stats on the Vees and the BCHL. Pinder gives a good insight with his game previews and interviews.

Players To Watch:

Denver Manderson (11-20-31)
Beau Bennett (9-16-25)
Garrett Milan (6-8-14)
Ryan Viselli (4-8-12)
Alex Szczechura (6-6-12)
Joey Laleggia (2-9-11)
Joey Holka (6-4-10)
Eric Filiou (4-4-8)
Sean Bonar (8-1 Record-2.26 GAA)

The Vees made one move since the last meeting between these two teams signing (89) born forward Jake Johnson from the Sioux City Musketeers (USHL).

Heres a look at the season series between these two teams:

October 3rd @ Vernon: Penticton wins 2-0

Vernon outshot Penticton 34-15 but lost their first game of the season 2-0 after Denver Manderson (shorthanded) & Joey Holka scored for the Vees. The Vipers had many chances but couldn’t beat Sean Bonar who played very well making 34 saves for the shutout. Graeme Gordon made 13 saves in the loss. Penticton ended Vernon’s 22 game winning streak (going back to Game six of last years BCHL Finals)

Heart Attack Claims Vipers’ Longtime PA Announcer:

This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:

Heart attack claims Vipers’ longtime PA announcer

Published: October 08, 2009

It will be with heavy hearts that the Vernon Vipers take to the ice in B.C. Hockey League play this weekend.
Vipers’ longtime public address announcer, Wayne (Bucky) Buck, died earlier this week of a suspected heart attack.
Buck, who had recently retired from a sales job at Kiss FM, had also turned his mic in to spend more time watching Vipers’ games in the stands with his wife Sharon, He still acted as host of the Vipers’ post game shows at Boston Pizza.
Buck, 68, was known for his energized “Let’s play hockey” before the opening faceoff at Vipers’ home games.
“He was one of the longtime voices of the B.C. Hockey League,” said Vipers’ play-by-play announcer Todd Miller. “He was always a great supporter of the Viper family, whether he was behind the mic or not.”
Vipers’ assistant coach Jason Williamson remembers Buck calling games when he played with the Vipers, starting in 1999.
“Even when I played, I remember seeing him on the road in places like Cowichan Valley. I think I even saw him up north one time. He was a true fan.
“He was always opinionated, but no matter what, he stood by the team. People might not always realize it, but he added to the atmosphere of our games. He became part of our tradition.”
Buck, who also loved curling and golf (he worked part-time at Hillview), was raised in Saskatchewan, and was a huge Roughrider fan. He also served several years with the Vernon Rotary Club.
The 8-1 Vipers will look for a little redemption when they visit the Interior Conference-leading Penticton Vees (10-2) tonight at the South Okanagan Events Centre. They bowed 2-0 to Penticton Saturday night.
“We’ve had all week to ramp up for this game and sometimes playing on the road can be easier. You just go out there and play,” said Williamson. “They’ve been jumping all week at practice, and now we’ve just got to capitalize on our chances. We’ve just got to get to those greasy areas, get to the net and bang them in.”
The Vipers entertain the 3-6-0-1 Cowichan Valley Capitals Saturday night at Wesbild Centre. Williamson watched the Caps bow 6-1 to the host Vees Wednesday night.
“They’ve got a big team and they’re going to play physical,” said Williamson. “We just have to be ready to play, or we could be losing out on two points. We want to be in first place as soon as we can get there.”
Vernon hosts the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (5-2-1) in a Sunday matinee (2 p.m.) at Wesbild.

Junk Food Remains On Arena Menu:

Junk food remains on arena menu

By Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star

Published: October 08, 2009

Onion rings are back on the roster at Vernon Vipers games.
On Wednesday, the North Okanagan Regional District board overturned a recommendation of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee that would have replaced some junk food with healthier items at Wesbild Centre and the recreation complex. Instead, the full menu will continue while healthier foods are added.
“People should be able to make their own choices,” said director Mike Gavinchuk.
Director Wayne Lippert was among those who supported the original recommendation at GVAC. But he changed his mind when he realized some food would no longer be available.
“I believe in choices. We shouldn’t take away items people like,” he said.
As part of the menu proposed by GVAC, onion rings would have made way for frozen Baja burritos while chicken strips would have been replaced by chicken fingers.
A low-sodium popcorn cooked in sunflower oil would have been introduced while apple chips, and not nachos, would have been sold.
Director Jack Gilroy is pleased that a compromise has been found.
“Healthy choices are good but if they (junk food) are already there, why take it out,” he said.
Questions were also raised about plans to promote some items over others.
“Fruit juice has as much sugar as pop does. Choice is what it’s all about and not big brother,” said director John Trainor.
Had GVAC’s recommendation proceeded, staff had anticipated that net revenue from the concession stands and vending machines during the first year could drop $15,000 to $20,000.
With the current food selection remaining and new healthier items being added, there is also the possibility it could increase.
“There will be people who wouldn’t normally buy there,” said Al McNiven, parks and recreation general manager, because they didn’t find the menu appealing before.
Presently, there is $98,000 in annual net revenue from the concession and vending machines at Wesbild Centre and the recreation complex.

The Grande Prairie Storm are pleased to announce the signing of General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vandekamp to a three-year extension.

“I’m very excited to be given the opportunity to continue to work with the Storm,” says Vandekamp. “It’s been a great fit for me so far and a great fit for my family.
"This is such a strong organization and I’ve been treated so well.”

“We feel very fortunate to have a coach of his calibre within our organization and we look forward to continued success in the future.”

R.I.P. Wayne Buck

Id like to take this time to send my thoughts and prayers to the Buck family after this sad and very terrible news regarding Wayne Buck. I met "Bucky" many years ago back in the good old days at a Vernon Vipers game in the old Civic Arena. It wasnt until about four years ago that I got to know Wayne and become very good friends, we always seemed to run into one another either at the rink, around town or at work. Bucky always had a smile on his face, wanting to talk hours on end about hockey and the Vernon Vipers. I ran into Bucky and his wife Sharon at the Royal Bank Cup in Victoria, and ended up either going for dinners or drinks after most of the Vipers games, a group of us Viper fans all got together with Wayne and Sharon for a bbq before one of the Viper games, I will never forget having a cold beverage with Bucky in the "tent" after the Vipers just finished winning the RBC Cup, Wayne was so thrilled the Vipers won the cup & was telling me some great stories from when the Vipers had last won the RBC Cup back in 1999! Bucky had just stopped by work Monday afternoon to drop off his hockey pool with me, and then I hear this news late last night, very very sad. One of the nicest guys around, Wayne will be missed! R.I.P. Bucky!!

It is with much sadness and regret that the Vernon Vipers announce the passing of long time friend Wayne Buck. "Bucky" was part of the Viper organization for over 15 years as the public address announcer at each and almost every home game. He retired his mic this past season in order to spend more time in the stands with his wife and life partner Sharon. Still feeling the itch to be part of the game, Wayne took over the mic at Boston Pizza as part of the Vipers post game show after every Friday and Saturday night game.

Wayne was not only a huge part of the Vernon Vipers, he was a big part of the City of Vernon. Bucky worked over 12 years at Kiss FM and volunteered his time at Silver Star Rotary Club for many years. Wayne also loved to golf and worked at Hillview Golf Course the past three years at the pro-shop and driving range.

Bucky will be greatly missed by all the players, staff and fans of the Vernon Vipers and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Vipers Ice Express:

Vipers ice Express

Published: October 06, 2009

The Vernon Vipers earned a passing grade for their first three-game weekend of the B.C. Hockey League season.
The 8-1 Snakes recovered from their first loss of the season, a 2-0 shutout to the Interior Conference leading Penticton Vees Saturday night at Wesbild Centre, by stuffing the Burnaby Express 4-2 Sunday afternoon. They opened the weekend with a 4-3 win over the Westside Warriors Friday night.
Second star Jonathan Milhouse (5th goal), from Braden Pimm and Mike Collins, earned the winner against the Express. Collins (7th), on a shorthanded empty-netter, iced the game for Vernon.
“We had a chance to win all three, but playing three top teams is never easy,” said Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner, who was perhaps happier with Vernon’s effort in the loss to Penticton (9-2) than the win over Burnaby (5-2-0-2).
“We’re not really happy with the way we played (against the Express). We weren’t very good. It was three games in three nights, but that shouldn’t matter. It was the same for Burnaby.”
Burnaby’s Rich Manley (7th) opened the Sunday scoring early in the second period as he left the penalty box and got in behind the Vipers’ defence to go in alone on netminder Graeme Gordon.
Dylan Walchuk (3rd) replied for Vernon on the powerplay with nine seconds remaining in the second.
Collins, assisted by Milhouse, put Vernon in front early in the third frame. Shortly after, Adam Thompson wired a high, hard slap shot on a powerplay that shattered the glass behind Express netminder Harrison May (30 saves).
A long delay ensued (the glass had to be replaced twice), and both teams headed to their dressing rooms. Once play resumed, Luke Challier (3rd) equalized for the Express at 10:42.
Along with the points, Vernon can take some positives from the weekend. They averaged 40 shots per game while giving up fewer than 20. They boast a league-leading 1.70 goals against average.
“When you talk about defensive hockey, that’s everybody – not just the defencemen. We’ve got a pretty fast hockey team, which helps when you’re trying to clear the zone.
“We haven’t taken a lot of penalties, and that’s part of it, too.”
Regarding the shot count, Ferner says he wants to see more quality shots on net. Against the Vees, many of the Vipers’ 34 shots came from the outside, and netminder Sean Bonar easily picked them off. Vernon went 2-for-15 on the powerplay in the three games.
“We feel we’ve got some talented guys, but we’re playing like a perimeter team, and that goes for more than just the powerplay,” said Ferner.
“Scoring goals isn’t easy, you’ve got to go to those dirty areas. You just need guys that are willing to stand there.”
Penticton, who managed just 15 shots on Gordon, got goals by Denver Manderson (shorthanded) and Joey Holka Saturday night.
“There was quite a bit of feeling out on both sides. A couple of mistakes and it ended up in the back of the net,” said Ferner.
“I don’t think they generated that much themselves, it was more the chances we gave them, but they did what they needed to do to get a victory.”
Added Vees’ head coach Fred Harbinson: “We did a good job keeping shots to the outside and letting Sean see pucks. When there was a breakdown he was definitely there. In practice, he is working very hard, which is translating into game night.
“They (Vipers) are a great team, that’s why they are ranked No.1 in Canada. I thought mentally it was a big game for us.”
The Vipers visit the Vees Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre before hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals (3-5-0-1) Saturday at Wesbild. A much-improved Alberni Valley Bulldogs (5-2) squad visits Vernon for a Sunday matinee (2 p.m.).

Vipers Derail Express:

Vipers derail Express

by Don Klepp -Oct 4, 2009

Adam Thompson’s howitzers from the point highlighted a Sunday afternoon tilt at Vernon’s Wesbild Centre as the Vipers eventually prevailed against the Burnaby Express, 4-2. The first period was scoreless, although Burnaby’s well-traveled goaltender, Harrison May, stopped Connor Jones on the doorstep, and Adam Thompson’s slap shot hit the inside of the post and somehow stayed out. In the period, the Vipers out shot the visitors 11- 4. The Vipers continued to outplay the Express in the second period, but Burnaby’s super sized Rich Manley opened the scoring at 3:45 of the middle frame. As he exited the penalty box, Manley picked up a loose puck at centre ice and roared in on Graeme Gordon. The veteran Viper goalie stayed with Manley across the crease, but the 6”5”, 230 pound native of Buffalo slid the puck under the sprawling net minder. With nine seconds remaining in the period, Dylan Walchuk somehow got free of Jimmy Geerin’s clutches to redirect a Dan Nycholat pass in the paint. The power play marker was the first Viper goal in over five periods of hockey. According to Viper coach Jason Williamson, the Walchuk goal was doubly important to the Vipers: “It reminded us that not all goals have to be fancy. Walchuk got it started with a greasy goal at the doorstep and it went from there. The guys just kept on working and we got some more blue collar goals.” As has been the case all season, the Vipers out shot the opposition by a decided margin, especially in the first two periods. Ironically, in a third period where the shot totals were close, the Vipers outscored their visitors 3-1. Mike Collins, the game’s first star, got the ball rolling at 6:15. In the midst of concerted pressure in the offensive zone, Jonathon Milhouse and Braden Pimm went hard to the net. Express goaltender Harrison May was unable to corral a rebound and the puck lay in the crease for what seemed an eternity as Pimm and Milhouse were wrapped up by Express defencemen. Finally, Collins got free of his man and poked the puck in. Soon after the Collins goal, an Adam Thompson rocket deflected off a Burnaby stick and shattered the glass behind May. A lengthy delay ensued as the glass was repaired and the ice was flooded. When play resumed, the teams exchanged chances before a Luke Challier goal at 10:42 knotted the score. In an exchange of luck, Konrad Sander was unfortunate to have his slap shot ricochet off the post to Gordon’s right, but the rebound bounced off Challier and into the net. The Vipers quickly regained the lead. One minute after the Express goal, Jonathon Milhouse fired one off Harrison May’s back after Braden Pimm and Mike Collins had each beaten May only to see the puck trickle wide. Referee Kris Hartley assessed Braden Pimm a hooking penalty with 1:41 remaining in the game, but the Express were unable to capitalize and they surrendered a short handed goal at 19:35. Dylan Walchuk intercepted a D to D pass at the blue line and dished to Mike Collins, whose 150-footer found the vacated Burnaby net. Once again, the Viper penalty kill was perfect at home, where their PK percentage is running at 96.15 percent. The home power play is operating at only 15 percent, but the Vipers did score once in tries in this game. Burnaby, which had been rolling before its three-game trip to the Interior Conference, salvaged only one point in the three games the Smoke Eaters beat the Express in overtime, last night in Trail. Rich Manley was named the game’s third star, but WHL refugee Matt Ius was Burnaby’s best player in this contest, with several bone crunching body checks and dangerous rushes. The Pimm line led the way for the Vipers, with Milhouse getting the second star and Collins the first star nomination. The three line mates combined for seven points in the contest.

Collins clutch against Warriors

Published: October 04, 2009

Can’t really blame Vernon Vipers’ forward Mike Collins for sleeping in Saturday morning. He and the Snakes drained the tank Friday night, peppering Westside Warriors netminder Kevin Jebson with 52 shots in a 4-3 B.C. Hockey League thriller.
Collins, 19, pocketed the winner with two seconds left on a sweet backhand deke before 1,156 fans.
“I caught the d-man sleeping and went to the net as hard as I could. Milly (Jonathan Milhouse) made a perfect pass, and I caught the goalie sliding,” said Collins, who leads Vernon with 5-6-11 in seven games.
“You can’t ask for anything more. Our play in the first and second period wore them down for the third. In the third period, we really beared down and capitalized.”
Added Vipers’ assistant coach Jason Williamson: “It was a back breaker for them, but we had been coming hard all night. It’s the best team game we’ve played – we haven’t been tested like that this year.”
Jebson (48 saves) earned first star, while Graeme Gordon made 16 stops for the win.
The Vipers entertained the Interior-leading Penticton Vees Saturday night. They host Coastal Conference powerhouse Burnaby Express today in a 2 p.m. matinee.
“This weekend is a big test. Games against first- and second-place teams – it will show what kind of character we have,” said Collins.
University of New Hampshire scout Scott Borek paid the Vernon Vipers a unique compliment following Friday’s win.
“He told me the problem with Vernon is they are one of the most skilled teams in the league, but they work like fourth liners,” smiled Williamson.
“They (Warriors) capitalized on their opportunities, but our guys weren’t going to be denied.”
Braden Pimm (2nd) opened the scoring late in the first period as he charged the net to redirect Dan Nycholat’s shot.
Goals by Winfield’s Trevor Bailey (5th) and Cam Reid (4th and 5th) put Westside back in front, but Stevie Weinstein (2nd) equalized as he converted a crafty back-door pass from Kellen Jones on a second-period powerplay. Second star Connor Jones earned the other assist.
“Connor and Kellen are our team’s two hardest working guys, and it’s rubbing off on everyone,” said Williamson.
“When your best players are your hardest working players, it sends a message to everyone on the bench.”
Reid (third star) restored Westside’s lead 30 seconds into the final frame on a 5-on-3. Later in the third, Kellen completed a gorgeous tic-tac-toe with Conner and Cory Kane for his first of the season.

Kraus's hockey journey has led to a leading role in Vernon

A California surfer and roller hockey player before he tried ice hockey, Kevin Kraus fast-tracked his career in just six years.
As a young teen, he was playing defence for the Western Hockey League Kamloops Blazers, and later the Tri-City Americans. Today, at 20, he’s the captain and marquee defenceman with the defending Royal Bank Cup champion Vernon Vipers.
He manned the phones in the Viper office over the summer, pretty much coached his team in the Blue & White game, and based on his experience and devotion to the sport, was a near unanimous choice by his teammates as Snakes’ captain.
Viper head coach/GM Mark Ferner, a captain a few times in his long pro career, believes Kraus is a worthy replacement for graduating Chris Crowell.
“As a player, you worry about yourself,” said Ferner. “As a coach, and probably as a captain as well, you’ve gotta worry about 23 guys, making sure they’re ready. Some guys can wear it, some guys can’t. Even though it’s just a letter, there’s some extra onus put on that, making sure the group is heading in the right direction. We feel Kevin is mature enough to handle that. It could have been one of a lot of players.”
Kraus grew up in Garden Grove, Calif. loving the Mighty Ducks, causing friction in a home where everybody else backed the Kings. His older brother Tim played four years in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants and Regina Pats before earning 15 goals and 48 points with the ECHL Ontario Reign last year. Kevin was raised by his mom and dad, and later a step-dad, all of whom have supported his career.
A big fan of Washington Capitals’ puck-moving d-man Mike Green, Kraus is confident, somewhat cocky, fearless and plays with a swagger. His assistant captains are Braden Pimm and twins Connor and Kellen Jones.
“The thing is you pretty much have to hold all 23 guys accountable, make sure everyone’s working, no one’s hiding behind someone,” said Kraus. “We’ve got a pretty vocal room. All the vets are pretty vocal which is nice and makes my job easier.”
He said Ferner and assistant Jason Williamson told him to avoid letting the ‘C’ become a burden, to play his game and be the same person. As for his biggest strength as the captain, Kraus said: “That I can call anyone out. I can still have friends on the team and still be able to call guys out and yell at ‘em a bit. I think that helps a lot.”
Ferner says Kraus – believed to be the first American-born captain in Vernon franchise history – has the moxy to fill the role.
“We’ve had great leaders here in the past and that stuff has to be filtered down. The culture’s not going to change here. Now, it’s just a matter of this group making sure we’re staying on the right path and doing the right things.”
Kraus, who was a catcher and first baseman in his youth baseball days, has felt welcome in the Vipers’ den since leaving major junior. He doesn’t regret signing with Vernon.
“I could have went back (WHL), but this is my home now. I love the whole atmosphere of our room and our coaches and everything. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
Kraus, who is known for his shot-blocking, hip checking and offensive skills, has learned plenty of tricks from Ferner, a former d-man. He is high on the Vipers’ blueline brigade.
“We don’t have the size or the experience we had last year, but we certainly have the skill. Once the guys get gelling with their partners, it’ll be even better. It’s going to be tough for the guys that are sitting out to get into (games) as well, so there’s going to be a lot of battling in practice which is good to have for our team.”

Vernon 4 Burnaby 2

Was at todays BCHL game as Vernon defeated Burnaby 4-2 in front of 1,616 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Graeme Gordon
Burnaby: Harrison May

1st Period: For the second straight night Vernon carried the early edge in play but once again very few good scoring chances. Todays 1st period reminded me alot like last nights 1st period vs Penticton. The Vipers had some good early pressure buzzing in the Burnaby zone, Braden Pimm setup Jonathan Milhouse in the slot who was stopped by Harrison May. For the second straight game the Vipers were getting alot of shots from the outside, where Harrison May was seeing all of them, with very little traffic in front. Vernon was firing everything towards May getting out to an early 6-0 lead in shots. Both teams playing their third game in three days showed at times through out todays game, as the Express looked like they had the bus legs going in the 1st period after a long trip up from Trail last night. Vernon would get the first powerplay of the afternoon but couldnt take advantage as the Vipers powerplay has been struggling so far this young season. Burnaby didnt have much jump as the team was outplayed for most of the period. The Express would get a late powerplay wich would carry over into the 2nd period. Vernon with some good pressure but no real solid scoring chances. It was scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play. The Vipers outshot the Express 11-4.

2nd Period: Vernon would kill off the remainder of the penalty wich was carried over from the end of the 1st period and then get their second powerplay of the afternoon early to start the period. The Express would kill off the minor, just as the penalty expired Rich Manley jumped out of the box catching the Vipers d-men off gaurd going in for the breakaway putting a nice move on Graeme Gordon putting the Express up 1-0 at 2:44 the goal was unassisted. Burnaby looked much better in the middle frame, finding their legs and using their size and physical presence to their advantage. Burnaby played a very physical period laying out some huge checks. The Express also come up with some chances in the first half of the period, Brad Reid was stoned by Gordon at the side of the net. With Gordon down and out, the puck come to Reid at the side of the net, Reid went high as Gordon kicked up his leg at the last second making a highlight real toe save. The Express had their most offensive attack early into the period. At times both teams looked tired as the play went back and forth with very little action. The Vipers come close to tying the game after ringing a shot off the crossbar. Vernon couldnt seem to generate much offence or pressure. Late in the period the Vipers got a bit of a scare after Jonathan Milhouse took a knee on knee from Tod Fletcher. Fletcher was called for kneeing as Milhouse had troubles getting off the ice, as he was helped down to the Vipers dressing room but did manage to return to the bench to start the 3rd and finished the game. With Vernon on the man advantage the Vipers moved the puck well, creating chances. Mike Collins setup Dylan Walchuk at the side of the net who beat May with just 8.7 seconds remaing on the clock. Collins & Dan Nycholat picked up the assists. It was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Burnaby 13-8.

3rd Period: Vernons #1 line of Cory Kane and the Jones Twins got the puck moving down low, with some good cycle this line was buzzing in and around the net. Kane with a wrap around come very close to sliding the puck past May. The Vipers with some good pressure deep in the Burnaby zone had some chances early having the better of the play. The Vipers would take their first lead of the game after Mike Collins beat May at 6:15 putting Vernon up 2-1. Jonathan Milhouse collected the lone assist. The Vipers would then get another powerplay, Adam Thompson would wire a shot from the point wich smashed the end glass inbehind Harrison May wich forced both teams to head to the dressing rooms. A long delay after the rink staff had troubles putting in the new glass, after installing the new glass both teams headed back onto the ice as the refs went over to check out the glass, both teams were then ordered back to the dressing rooms as the rink crew come back out to take out the new peice of glass and replace it with another new peice of glass. The original glass was too short and not thick enough, forcing the arena staff to replace it with the matching glass thats already in place. The ice was then re-flooded, after a long delay both teams returned to the ice and the game contiued. Vernon did get a few good chances on the PP but couldnt find the back of the net. The long delay seemed to energize both teams as I thought the second half of the 3rd was the best and most entertaining hockey of the game. Both teams had chances at either ends of the rink. Just before the midway mark Konrad Sander beat Gordon but hit the post, the puck come back out to Luke Challier who then fired the rebound past Gordon to tie the game at 10:42. Sander picked up the lone assist. Just over a minute later the Vipers battled back with a good solid shift, Braden Pimm setup Jonathan Milhouse who beat May at 11:43 to re-give Vernon the lead. Pimm & Mike Collins collected the assists. Burnaby would get just their second powerplay of the afternoon but couldnt get by the Vipers strong penalty kill. Rich Manley was stopped by Gordon on a good save. Gordon then stopped Jon Puskar after a solid scoring chance. With under two minutes remaining the Express would get a late powerplay, but couldnt manage to get things organized as the Vipers strong forecheck kept the Express pinned in their own end, finally Burnaby would clear the zone getting Harrison May to the bench for the extra attacker, but it didnt take long before Mike Collins would fire his long shot into the empty net scoring shorthanded at 19:35 with Dylan Walchuck getting the lone assist. The Vipers would defeat the Express 4-2 improving to 8-1 and moving back to within two points of the Interior Division leading Penticton Vees. Vernon outshot Burnaby 10-8.

Top Players: (Vernon)

The line of Connor-Kellen Jones & Cory Kane played fairly well. Kane had a few chances, while Kellen and Connor looked good down low.

Mike Collins (2 goals & 2 assists) Looked very good up front for the Vipers. Collins battled hard, was very dangerous in the offensive zone.

Adam Thompson played another good game on the backend. Looks very cool and calm out their on most nights.

Graeme Gordon played very well, making many key saves. Made an unreal toe save on Brad Reid at the side of the net.

Top Players: (Burnaby)

Harrison May (31 saves) The Vipers have now faced three very solid goaltenders this weekend, all who played very well giving their teams a chance to win and it was no different this afternoon. May who looked good saw most of the shots with very little traffic in front.

Rich Manley (1 goal) A bigger kid that plays physical and can score. Had some good chances tonight, was dangerous with the puck most of the afternoon.

Matt Ius is another big kid on this Burnaby Express roster. Can skate and handle, another player who looked strong with the puck.

Konrad Sander (1 assist) Played well this afternoon. Rang a shot off the post after coming close to scoring.

Jon Puskar took a pounding by the Vipers, was hit once in the neutral zone in the 1st period and then hit hard in along the side wall and was down for a few minutes before getting back up again, and playing on the next shift. Took a high stick early in the 1st, this kid is tough, very rugged player.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

Todays game had alot of similar similarities like last nights game. Like last night the Vipers carried the better of the play during the 1st period but had very few real good scoring chances. The Vipers got alot of shots on goal but like last night, most of the shots were from the perimiter with no traffic in front. Vernon does need to work on the powerplay, after going 2-16 over the weekend. Im very impressed with keeping the shots against down in all three games. The Vipers d-men were getting beat on several occasions as the Express entered the Vipers zone. The Vipers for the second straight night lacked that jump and energy we are all use to seeing, well I heard from a few fans tonight, rumor is a handfull of players are sick-have the flu. Nice to see the boys never quit and gutted one out in the 3rd for the win. Lets hope they can rest up this week and get ready for a big rematch with Penticton Friday night. I thought the Vipers played well for the most parts of todays game.

Game Thoughts: (Burnaby)

A very big team with strong goaltending. The Express looked a little tired to start todays game but seemed to get going as the game went on. Both teams looked tired at times especially in the 2nd period. Give the Express credit they didnt give the Vipers much room to create or setup chances. I dont think the Express will be happy with this road trip, going home 0-3 Burnaby also didnt quit and could have easily tied todays game. For being a big team they sure dont use their size and physical presence all game, the Express really stepped up the physical play in the 2nd period but didnt do much hitting in the 1st and 3rd periods.
