I read through this announcement several times and wonder why the BCHL even bothers to have a season? We know the owners are not going to make any financial sacrifice; the players are now required to pay $1,500 per month for Sept-November for the exhibition season so I would assume the players would have to pay for the entire year. Then every time a team travels outside its cohort it is required to then quarantine for 14 days before it plays a different cohort??? Many of these players are in the BCHL to get a college commitment. The schools from the US are not going to travel across the border to watch and watching on Hockey TV is no replacement for watching games live. What is gained for the players to jump through all these hoops to play games and likely end up investing well over $10,000?
I'm super excited to hear we will get to see Junior hockey this season! The only question is, will we have to watch games through Hockey TV or will we get to watch games live in person? I didn't think we were going to see Junior hockey this fall. With the amount of cases climbing daily and all the government restrictions as well as travelling/border restrictions, I didn't think the BCHL would have a season this year. If fans are allowed back inside hockey arenas, it will be very interesting to see the new guidelines teams have formed and installed for us the fans. From the time I was a young child, I can remember the count down to training camp once August 1st hit the calender. When September 1st hit this year, it was a very weird and different feeling, with no training camps/or exhibition games. Now that teams have started training camps and exhibition games are suppose to take place at some point in September, things are slowly starting to feel a little normal again, in regards to the Junior hockey world.
The Penticton Vees annual Blue/White inter-squad game was on Hockey TV Friday night. I watched some of it as I have been craving to watch some kind of Junior hockey. It was very different with no fans in the rink, but great to see the kids back in action. I wish more teams including the Vipers would get more involved with not only Hockey TV but do more on social media, in regards to posting rosters, showing some clips from training camp etc. Especially since fans aren't allowed to attend and watch. Keep the fans interested and more involved in these different times.
