The Vipers have a second chance at winning their record 7th Doyle Cup after falling 3-1 to Spruce Grove Thursday in Game 5. The Vipers are looking to win back to back Doyle Cups for the first time since the 1991-1992 Vernon Lakers. A win tonight and Vernon heads back to the Royal Bank Cup for the second straight year. After out playing and out chancing the Saints in Game 5, it was Vince Marozzi that stole the show making 37 saves giving his team a chance to force a Game 6 and keep their season alive. Vernon would open the scoring in the 2nd period but couldn’t hold off the Saints attack as Spruce Grove scored three straight goals in the 2nd to take the 3-1 lead. The Vipers with several good chances in the 3rd, missed on some very good quality opportunities & didn’t get the bounces most of the night snapping their three game winning streak.

-Tonight could be the final & last home game of the season for the Vernon Vipers. A win and the Vipers head to Manitoba for the Royal Bank Cup. So this will be your last chance to see several veteran Vipers that will be moving on next season. Let’s take a look at the Vipers that wont be returning next season and how long they have played in a Vipers jersey.

Spruce Grove is 4-14 on the powerplay vs Vernon.

Spruce Grove is coming off a huge 3-1 victory in Game 5 and once again have their season on the line tonight in Game 6. Can the Saints force a Game 7? Through all the stats out the window. Spruce Grove who has been outplayed for most of this series has managed to hang around and stay in the series. The Saints with a better effort in Game 5 still were out chanced and out played but scored on their chances, took advantage of some turnovers and played a solid defensive game, clogging up the front of the net, tying up the Jones Twins and not giving Vernon any time or space. Can the Saints do the same again tonight?

-Vince Marozzi is going to be called apon again tonight to be the Saints hero and make the big saves when needed.

-Spruce Grove will be playing with desperation for the second straight game, as the Saints season is on the line.

-The Saints need to get lots of pucks and traffic towards Graeme Gordon.

-Spruce Grove needs to find a way to contain or slow down the Vipers speed and skill. As well as try and stop Vernon’s cycle and forecheck that has been so good for them in this series.

Specialty teams will once again be key tonight. Spruce Grove needs to stay out of the penalty box and watch the Vipers penalty kill who can be very dangerous.

-The Saints who are the bigger team need to play physical and lay the body on Vernon.

-Both teams need to get off to a good start, scoring the game’s first goal of the game will be key.

-Spruce Grove needs to play a little more consistant hockey, the Saints cant seem to put together a full 60 minutes.

-The Saints need to shut down the Jones Twins who have been very dangerous with the puck all series.
