Vernon 11 Williams Lake 1

I was at tonights BCHL game as Vernon defeated Williams Lake 11-1 in front of 2,305 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Blake Voth
Williams Lake: Evan Dauenhauer

1st Period: Ryan Stanimir with a good chance early into the game was stopped by Blake Voth. Just 2:46 into the game Cole Ikkala tried setting up Sawyer Mick in front, the puck bounced over Mick and ended up on the stick of Patrick McGillis who beat Evan Dauenhauer putting Vernon up 1-0. Ikkala & Mick with the assists. On the next play McGillis setup Sawyer Mick in front but couldnt beat Dauenhauer. Shortly after that, David Robinson with a shot from the circle was stopped by Dauenhauer, the Timberwolves couldnt clear the zone, Rob Short with some hard work kept the puck in at the blueline, and then fed Robinson out front at 3:55 as the Vipers were up 2-0 early. Short & Connor Jones with the assists. Keenan Bailey with a chance at the side of the net was stopped by Voth. As the period went on Vernon slowly started to take over the edge in play. The Vipers moved the puck well in the Williams Lake zone getting some small flurries in close. Sawyer Mick was stopped in front. The T-Wolves didnt generate much offence but when they did, they come up with some decent chances. Riley Sweeney carried the puck and then with a shot from the slot was stopped by Voth. From here on in it was all Vipers. It looked like Vernon had the puck on a string at times, playing most of the remainder of the period in the T-Wolves zone. Curtis Gedig with a shot from the point hit the post. The Vipers with some good presure had chances but also tried being a little too fancy at times, coughing up the puck. David Robinson would score his 2nd goal of the night at 11:13 after Connor Jones setup the Vernon product. Vernon was by far the better of the two teams, having the better of the play. At the buzzer at the end of the 1st Stephan Virtanen went after Cory Kane, Virtanen was very emotional trying to get at the Vipers forward. The Vipers were up 3-0 after 20 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Williams Lake 14-7.

2nd Period: The Vipers would start the period on the games first powerplay, with no real chances the Vipers struggled as Williams Lake killed off the minor. Braden Pimm with a burst of speed come down the wing and rang his shot off the crossbar after having Evan Dauenhauer beat. Bryce Kakoske with a great chamce was robbed by the glove of Dauenhauer at the side of the net. Not much flow or action in the middle frame as both teams looked sloppy at times. Vernon would get another powerplay, after some good puck movement the Vipers would get just one good scoring chance after Dylan Walchuk hit the post as Williams Lake would kill off another minor. Just a few minutes later Vernon would go back on the man advantage and this time capitalise. Cory Kane would find the back of the net at 9:24 putting the Vipers up 4-0. Dylan Walchuk and Jonathan Milhouse collected the assists. The Timberwolves would finally get some offence going after just one shot on net in the first eight minutes the T-Wolves with a scramble in front of Voth come very close to sliding the puck past the Vernon goaltender. Off the the next draw the puck would come back to the point, Jason Diehl's shot hit two players before somehow beating Blake Voth at 11:40 getting Williams Lake on the board. Clayton McEwan would be credited with the goal, as Diehl & Ryan Stanimir would pick up the assists. A flurry of goals would all come at once just minutes apart. Vernon thought they had score their 5th goal of the night but it was waived off as the play kept going. On the next play Vernon would get their 5th goal of the night after Connor Jones beat Dauenhauer at 14:19 putting Vernon up 5-1. Rob Short & Garrett Noonan with the assists. Just three minutes later Curtis Gedig's point shot somehow floated high and over Evan Dauenhauer at 17:34 Patrick McGillis with the lone assist. As the period went on the Vipers dominated as Williams Lake couldnt get out of their own end. Vernon was up 6-1 after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers outshot the Timberwolves 17-4.

3rd Period: With the Vipers still on the powerplay wich was carried over from the end of the 2nd period, Vernon not be able to capitalise as Williams Lake killed off the remainder of the minor. Just over two and a half minutes into the 3rd Clayton McEwan jumped Braden Pimm taking him to the ice, McEwan would start pounding away on Pimm before Mike Collins jumped in as did the rest of the players on the ice. McEwan was pounding on Pimm while he was laying on the ice, Mike Collins then dropped the mits with Bradey Fuller as everyone else was doing alot of pushing and shoving. In the end, McEwan, Collins and Fuller would all get tossed from tonights game and the Vipers would wind up on a seven minute powerplay. Just seconds into the man advantage Cory Kane put Vernon up 7-1 at 2:59 with Steve Weinstein getting the lone assist. For the next seven minutes the Vipers moved the puck around the perimiter looking for the perfect setup in the slot. Captain Kevin Krause with a tap in would give Vernon the 8-1 lead at 6:01 Jonathan Milhouse & Dylan Walchuk with the assists. Rob Short at 8:27 gave the Vipers a 9-1 lead, Connor Jones & Dan Nycholat with the assists. Ryan Stanimir with two big block shots played very well on the penalty kill. It was all Vipers as the Timberwolves struggled offensively all night. Williams Lake would finally get a powerplay but wouldnt even record a shot on net as Vernon would kill off the minor. The Vipers with several good chances were peppering Evan Dauenhauer with shot after shot. David Robinson with a chance in tight was stopped by Dauenhauer. Williams Lake then got into more penalty trouble in the final six minutes. Braden Pimm would put Vernon up 10-1 scoring on the powerplay at 17:32 Curtis Gedig with the lone assist. Just over a minute later Dylan Walchuk on the powerplay put the Vipers up 11-1 Sawyer Mick & Kevin Kraus picked up the helpers. Blake Voth had a pretty easy last two periods having very little shots. Vernon would win its third straight with a huge 11-1 win over Williams Lake. The Vipers outshot the T-Wolves 17-4.

Top Players: (Vernon)

David Robinson (2 goals) Played very good up front for the Vipers. Robinson had a few good chances to pick up his first hat trick as a Viper. Robinson adds alot of energy, physical play and grittyness to the Vipers lineup. For the second straight night Robinson laid out some big hits, played very physical down low and in front of the net.

Connor Jones (1 goal & 3 assists) Played very well. Jones was really skating hard, made some nice heads up plays all night.

Dan Nycholat (1 assist) I thought looked very solid on the Vipers backend. Played very well.

The line of Patrick McGillis (1 goal & 1 assist), Sawyer Mick (2 assists), & Cole Ikkala (1 assist) played very well. McGillis and Mick both looked good up front, both had some good chances. Both played physical at times.

Rob Short (1 goal & 2 assists) Played his second straight good game. Short once again worked hard, skated hard and battled down low and in front of the net.

Kevin Kraus (1 goal & 1 assist) Played very well on the blueline. Kraus jumped up into the play on some chances, was very good defensively.

Braden Pimm (1 goal) Played very physical, had a few big checks.

Dylan Walchuk (1 goal & 2 assists) played very well again for the third straight night.

Top Players: (Williams Lake)

Ryan Stanimir (1 assist) Was by far Williams Lake's best player. This kid battled hard, didnt quit, was always skating hard, had some chances. Saw alot of time on the penalty kill, made two big blocked shots.

Trent Murdoch played well up front with Ryan Stanimir. Didnt get really many good chances but moved the puck well, was involved in the play when the T-Wolves had the puck.

Evan Dauenhauer (37 saves) Give this kid some credit, the Vernon product faced 48 shots making some key saves at times. The kid stuck it out and played the whole game, has a real nice glove hand, made a few nice glove saves.

Game Thoughts: (Vernon)

This wasnt much of a game. Right from the start the game was almost over, Vernon dominated Williams Lake in all area's of tonights game. The Vipers are just too strong, have way too many weapons that can kill you when given the chance. I thought the Vipers played very well for facing the last place T-Wolves. Vernon took their foot off the gas as the game went along but at times still looked like they were playing at full speed. Nice to see the powerplay get going after really struggling latley. Tonight was the final home game before the Vipers big Coastal road trip and All-Star game next week-weekend. With the BCHL's trade deadline tomorrow night, you have to wonder if Mark Ferner will pull off any trades?

Game Thoughts: (Williams Lake)

This was my first look at the T-Wolves this season as Williams Lake lost the season series to the Vipers 4-0. Williams Lake other then a few kids really dosnt have much, this team was having all kinds of troubles facing a much stronger Vernon team. Give Williams Lake credit they sure are fiesty and dont back down from the rough stuff.
