By George, he's back

By Greg Harder Wed, Dec 2 2009

The Regina Pats had a new player at practice today, but it’s a familiar face to local hockey fans.
Regina native Drew George is back in town to kick the tires on a potential reunion with the Pats, who listed him last year after a standout performance in training camp. The 18-year-old forward initially turned down an offer to play for the Pats this season so he could join the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers and pursue an NCAA scholarship.
His plans are now on hold after Vernon traded him to the Cowichan Capitals on Thursday. George is not inclined to join the last-place Capitals, especially since he went to B.C. specifically to play for the Vipers after they were aggressive in pursuing him last spring. With Vernon now out of the picture, George decided to return home to consider his options.
It seems the Pats are near the top of the list, although he hasn't given up on joining another junior A team and continuing to pursue his NCAA aspirations. He did accept an invitation to skate with the Pats, who are hoping he decides to stick around (George knows several players on the team, including Jordan Eberle and Jordan Weal, and is close friends with Garrett Mitchell).
George was heavily recruited last spring by the Pats and several other teams, including the Vipers, who have a stacked lineup this season and are looking to defend their Royal Bank Cup title. As a result, the team parted with George and young defenceman Nick Amies on Thursday to acquire star veteran blueliner Curtis Gedig, a seventh-round pick of the New Jersey Devils.
George was having a solid season in Vernon, posting 10 goals and 17 points in just 24 games despite playing a fourth-line role. George has good speed and skill. He could step into the Pats’ lineup immediately and perhaps work his way into a third-line role, with an excellent chance to move up the pecking order next season with the graduation of Jordan Eberle, Matt Strueby and Brett Leffler.
George, a nephew of former Pats coach Al Dumba, helped lead the Notre Dame Hounds to a Telus Cup national midget AAA title last season. He finished tied for second in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with 78 points, including 27 goals, in 43 games. He added five goals and five assists in eight playoff games, then was named the MVP of the Telus Cup prairie regional qualifying tournament after potting four goals and three helpers in four games. He added another three goals and 10 points in seven games at the national championship.

We'll have the full story, including comments from George, in Thursday's Leader-Post.
