Dauphin Kings 3 - Brockville Braves 2

KINGS ONLY UNBEATEN AFTER TIGHT WIN OVER BRAVES

DAUPHIN, Man. – Two down, four to go for the Dauphin Kings at the 2010 RBC Cup.

Shane Luke scored twice to lead the offence and Mitch Czibere had the eventual game-winner late in the second period as the Kings held on for a 3-2 victory over the Brockville Braves on Monday night in a battle of the last two unbeatens at the National Junior A Championship.

The win ensures the Kings (2-0) get to the halfway point of the round robin on top of the standings, while the Braves (1-1) drop into a three-way tie for second with Vernon and La Ronge after their first loss.

It took just 4:08 for Dauphin to ignite the capacity crowd of 2,170, as a shot from Ryan Dreger snuck through Braves netminder Justin Gilbert and Luke was there to poke home the loose puck for his first goal of the tournament.

But the vaunted Brockville power play went to work shortly after and Braves captain Shayne Thompson pulled the East Region champions even, blasting a shot through a screen and past Kings goaltender Joe Caligiuri for his team’s eighth power play goal in two games.

After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes of the second period the Kings started to take control, and were finally rewarded when Luke snapped a shot from the face-off dot over the glove of Gilbert to restore Dauphin’s one-goal lead at 2-1.

Czibere pushed the lead to two for the first time when his hard shot got through Gilbert and sent the Kings to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The Braves got back to within one quickly, with Shayne Stockton converting just 40 seconds into the third period, and pressured for the tying goal, outshooting Dauphin 13-7 in the final frame, but could not get the tying goal past Caliguiri, who made sure his team’s home-ice winning streak reached 16 games.

The Braves will have Tuesday off before facing Vernon in a marquee round-robin match-up on Wednesday afternoon (2 p.m. CT), while Dauphin faces their ANAVET Cup rivals, the La Ronge Ice Wolves, on Tuesday night (7 p.m. CT).
