VIPERS: Hit, Hole Heavyweight Tilt

Posted by HockeyTube on Jan 29th, 2017

During a BCHL game January 28th between the Vernon Vipers and the Nanaimo Clippers we saw a huge hit, a big hole and then a heavyweight tilt. Late in the game, Clippers defenceman Sean Buchanan tried almost successfully to put forward Jesse Lansdell thru the end boards. Following the hit, Viper blueliner #5 Shane Kelly came flying in to scrap Buchanan in what was easily a heavyweight tilt with both player tipping the scales at 205 plus pounds.

Former Viper Stevenson Right At Home With Warriors:

Here is an article on former Vernon Vipers forward Chase Stevenson.

Stevenson is in his first season with the West Kelowna Warriors, attended the Vipers training camp in August. Stevenson never played any exhibition games was injured during camp, before being placed on the injured reserve to start the regular season. Stevenson was released early into the regular season. The Warriors signed Stevenson November 9th 2016. In 22 games this season, Stevenson has (5-goals-7-assists-12-points).

Stevenson right at home with Warriors

by  Warren Henderson - Kelowna Capital News

Jan 4, 2017

Growing up in West Kelowna, Chase Stevenson remembers many a winter night cheering for his hometown Warriors at Royal LePage Place.

He even owns a stick autographed by the entire 2007-08 edition of the B.C. Hockey League team.

So when Stevenson got a call from West Kelowna assistant coach Shae Naka in late October asking him to join the Warriors, the 17-year-old forward didn’t need much time to arrive at an answer.

“I was extremely excited to get the call,” said Stevenson, who played much of his minor hockey in West Kelowna. “I was excited for the chance to play so close to home, and also for a team that was coming off a championship.

“I couldn’t have asked for a much better situation.”

Stevenson, who lives just five minutes from the Warriors’ home arena, was in his second season with the B.C. Major Midget League’s Okanagan Rockets at the time of the promotion.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward has since played in 15 games with the Warriors and has registered five assists.

While Stevenson is still waiting for his first BCHL goal, head coach and GM Rylan Ferster likes the array of abilities the young forward brings to the Warriors.

“I think his ceiling is really high,” Ferster said of Stevenson’s potential. “He does everything well. He’s a good checker, he sees the game well, and he’s good offensively.

“He’s been a bit snake-bitten since he joined us, but that should come. He’s a very complete, 200-foot player. We’re happy to have him.”

Stevenson had limited BCHL experience prior to joining the Warriors, having played three games last season with the Penticton Vees.

He started 2016-17 at the training camp of the Vernon Vipers before an injury prompted his return to the midget Rockets.

Now, after a brief adjustment period, Stevenson looks to have found a permanent home at the junior A level.

“At the start, the speed was a little hard to adjust to, but that was more of a mental thing,” he said. “For sure, I’m starting to feel more comfortable and I’m gaining confidence.

“I’ve had a million chances to score,” he added with a laugh, “and haven’t got one yet, but hopefully that’ll come soon.”

Down the road, Stevenson is hoping to land a scholarship to play at a U.S. college, ideally for the start of the 2018-19 season.

Vernon 5 Prince George 4 Double Overtime

I have had season tickets for the past 27 years and been following Junior hockey in Vernon for well over thirty years. Ive missed only three home games since 1998-99 season. For anyone who could not attend or watch today's Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from today’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw today’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at today's Vipers-Spruce Kings game as Vernon defeated Prince George 5-4 in double overtime in front of 1,609 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Ty Taylor
Prince George: Tavin Grant

1st Period: The Spruce Kings jumped on the Vipers early, had some good pressure-zone time off the opening faceoff before Austin Adamson just two minutes in responded with a great opportunity in front, couldn't beat Tavin Grant on a bit of a scramble in close. PG pushed back with another strong attack, the Spruce Kings didn't generate much for offence carried some of the early play. Prince George had a bit of a slight edge in play early. Six minutes into the 1st Brody Dale & Ryan Brushett both had quality chances in close were denied by Tavin Grant. Just before the halfway mark Brett Stapley and Niko Karamanis with some nice two way passing lead the two on one rush before Karamanis was stopped by Tavin Grant who come up with a huge pad save, keeping this game scoreless. On the following shift the Spruce Kings would get the games first powerplay. Just seconds into the man advantage former Penticton Vees forward Ben Brar beat Ty Taylor giving Prince George a 1-0 lead at 10:20 Drew Lennon and Tyler Anderson with the helpers. Shots were 11-3 in favor of Vernon at this point. In the second half the Vipers took over the edge in play, with several good looks Vernon couldn't beat Tavin Grant. Cooper Watson's shot from the point with five minutes remaining went off the goal stick of Grant who was keeping the Spruce Kings in the contest. Shortly after Steven Jandric on a wrap around couldn't beat Grant after coming across the blue paint to make another big stop with just over three minutes remaining in the 1st. On the following play-shift, Connor Russell with a hard shot from just inside the blueline forced Ty Taylor into making his biggest save of the period, making a huge pad save off Russell. PG rallied late slowly come on in the final minutes, were firing pucks to the net as the Snakes were stuck on sixteen shots for several minutes. It was 1-0 Prince George after 20 minutes of play. I thought the Spruce Kings had the early jump, had some good pressure but didn't generate much for chances in the first six to seven minutes. The Vipers didn't see a lot of puck possession-zone time before coming on as the period continued. Vernon carried the better of the play for most of the period, were outshooting PG 11-3 and 14-4 at points in the 1st. The Snakes with some good opportunities couldn't beat Tavin Grant who played very well in goal for the Spruce Kings. PG looked good the first five-six minutes and come on late in the final few minutes, were lucky to be up 1-0. Vernon outshot Prince George 16-13.

2nd Period: Prince George with a lot of jump come out hard to start the middle frame. About a minute into the 2nd period the puck was tangled up in Ty Taylors skates, causing a bit of a goal mouth scramble in the viper zone. Taylor fell couldn't find the puck laying in the crease with the Vipers desperately trying to clear the puck from the crease, eventually did before the Spruce Kings were able to poke away. Taylor had troubles getting back to his feet on a strange play to start the period. Two and a half minutes in Steven Jandric with a grade a opportunity at the side of the net was robbed by Spruce Kings starting goaltender Tavin Grant who come across with a huge pad save. Prince George responded with a strong push back shift. About five minutes in Vipers starting goaltender Ty Taylor had to be sharp, made a quick reaction pad save off a back hand from in close before stopping the Spruce Kings on a wrap around chance. PG with some good chances early to start the period. Just before the midway mark the Snakes with a ton of pressure, had several good minutes in the offensive zone, were pressing hard, had a flurry of great opportunities either just fired wide of the net or were denied by Tavin Grant. Just past the halfway mark Vernon would get their first look with the powerplay, but struggled as PG killed off the minor.  But with just under six minutes to go, Tyler Anderson's shot looked to be redirected in front by former West Kelowna Warrior Brett Mennear, giving Prince George a 2-0 lead at 14:15 Anderson & Chong Lee with the assists. On the following play the Vipers would get into penalty trouble giving Prince George back to back powerplay's who couldn't convert with the man advantage. It was 2-0 Prince George after 40 minutes of play. Just like the 1st period PG showed a lot of jump early to start the 2nd, had several good chances. The Vipers needed some time before got their game going and come on and once again carried most of the period. Vernon with a ton of flurries in and around the net, were having troubles getting pucks to the net as the Spruce Kings played very well defensively. Prince George with a strong forecheck, were keeping the Snakes to the outside, limiting their chances in the 2nd period. The Vipers unable to capitalize on their chances. Prince George outshot Vernon 10-8.

3rd Period: The Vipers with a strong start would finally get on the board. Just 1:15 into the 3rd Simon Sagissor with a strong shift was able to spot Ryan Brushett going to the goal who undressed Tavin Grant in front, cutting the Prince George lead to 2-1 at 1:15 Sagissor & Austin Adamson collected the helpers. The Snakes pressing hard, were all over the Spruce Kings. Vernon with a ton of pressure couldn't buy a goal after getting several good looks in and around the net. PG playing a lot of the early minutes of the 3rd in their own end, would regain their two goal lead. Tanner Campbell gave Prince George a 3-1 lead at 5:24 after some nice two way passing. Ethan O'Rourke and Tyler Anderson picked up the assists. Vernon responded and once again had loads of pressure in the Spruce Kings end, had some quality chances in and around the net. The Vipers just couldn't catch a break. Just after the midway mark Keegan Ward put Prince George up 4-1 at 12:54 Brett Mennear with the assist. It seemed like the Spruce Kings would get one chance and in it went in a period where they were outplayed. The Vipers responded with a quick push back shift. Steven Jandric spotted Jimmy Lambert in front, cutting the Prince George lead to 4-2 at 13:36 Jandric and Brett Stapley with the helpers. About a minute later the Snakes would get their first of two back to back powerplay's. With good pressure and puck movement Steven Jandric spotted a wide open Cameron Trott who hit the open cage cutting the Prince George lead to 4-3 at 14:56 Jandric & Jimmy Lambert with the assists. Prince George getting into penalty trouble late, would give the Vipers another powerplay on the following shift. Cameron Trott would setup Steven Jandric who tied the game 4-4 at 17:35 sending Kal Tire Place into a frenzy. Trott and Jimmy Lambert collected the assists. The Spruce Kings were stunned, the PG bench was shocked. Vernon kept coming, pressed for the game winner but would run out of time. It was 4-4 after 60 minutes of play. The Vipers with a strong 3rd come out of the gates, scored just 1:15 into the frame to get within a goal, would eventually give up the next two goals to go down 4-1. This was a period where Vernon carried the play, couldn't buy a goal-catch a break were all over PG. The Spruce Kings who saw very little zone time, scored on two of their very few opportunities. The Snakes dominated the 3rd played most of the period in the offensive zone. The Vipers with a ton of opportunities, couldn't solve Tavin Grant who was solid. It wasn't until late when the wheels fell off for the Spruce Kings. PG got into penalty trouble late and it cost them, giving up two late powerplay goals, as Vernon tied the game after being down 4-1 with seven minutes to go. I thought the Spruce Kings defence played well-did a great job at keeping the Vipers to the outside early but late in the 3rd gave the Viper offence a little more room to create/generate plays. Vernon outshot Prince George 19-8.

Overtime: The Vipers got control of the puck off the opening faceoff, but struggled to generate/create any chances. Vernon looked very scary with and without the puck in overtime, almost turned over the puck on a few plays. PG would eventually carry most of the play in overtime but didn't generate any real threat with the puck. No scoring chances at either ends of the rink. It was tied 4-4 after 65 minutes of play. Shots were 1-1.

Double Overtime: The Vipers going with all three forwards for the second overtime, carried a lot of the play early. Ryan Brushett carried the play into the PG zone before using his upper body would knock off one defender before beating Tavin Grant on the wrap around giving Vernon the 5-4 double overtime victory at 3:29 as the Viper bench erupted onto the ice. Grant was just a little slow, didn't react quick enough to get over across the crease in time to stop Brushett. The PG bench was upset as several players were smashing their sticks heading off the ice. Vernon outshot Prince George 2-0.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Cameron Trott (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought really struggled this weekend, looked to be fighting the puck often. I didn't think he played very well in all three games this weekend but really stepped up late in the 3rd this afternoon to get the Vipers within a goal before setting up the game tying goal on the powerplay.

The line of Brett Stapley (1 assist), Steven Jandric (1 goal & 2 assists) & Jimmy Lambert (1 goal & 2 assists) was Vernon's best unit going today. The Viper #1 line was really flying, played with a lot of pace, moved the puck well, were very dangerous in the offensive zone, were clicking all night. Had several quality chances in and around the net. I thought Stapley was strong on the draw, good in and around the net, while Jandric was a force down the wing and also driving to the net a lot. I thought Lambert didn't stand out as much in the first two periods but come on strong to finish the game.

Ryan Brushett (2 goals) Scored the Snakes first and last goals of the game, played with a lot of jump, was skating hard. This kid can really move the puck up ice in a hurry. Has some soft hands, just needs to work on his finish in close. Scored a huge goal for the Vipers in the second overtime.

Connor Clouston I thought played with an edge, was in the face of several opponents this afternoon, was physical, played well on the backend.

Brody Dale Didn't see much ice time today, especially as the game went on. I thought looked-played very well in the 1st period, had lots of jump, was going to the net, had atleast two good chances in front, was generating some opportunities.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

In a game where the Vipers were by far the better team, it looked like they weren't going to pull out the win this afternoon. I thought the Snakes dominated a lot of the play for most of the game. Vernon carried a lot of the play, had a ton of opportunities, couldn't buy a goal-catch a break for the first two periods. The 1st period is where the Vipers really needed a goal to get rewarded for their chances. The Vipers were down a goal heading into the 2nd period could have easily been up four or five goals heading into the 2nd period. I don't think Vernon gave up much for opportunities, played most of the game in the offensive zone. Playing their fourth game in five days give the Vipers credit, I thought they played very well and really stepped up their play in the 3rd. It seemed like the Vipers would get a ton of pressure-quality chances but come up with no goal, before the Spruce Kings come down the ice and score on one opportunity. Give the boys credit, they didn't fold the tents after giving up the 4th goal, played hard, kept battling before forcing overtime. Unlike last night in a game where the Vipers were lucky to win, they deserved to win this afternoon after dominating the play for most of the day. This year's team has a lot of heart, character and veteran leadership, where no game is over. Today was a big character win, extending the Vipers unbeaten streak to four games and now move to within six points of 1st place Penticton.

Top Player's: (Prince George)

Tyler Anderson (3 assists) The former West Kelowna Warriors defenceman played a lot of minutes and was very solid for the Spruce Kings this afternoon. Picking up three helpers played very well on the blueline. A big kid that was hard to beat one on one, plays the body, sees-reads the ice well.

Brett Mennear (1 goal & 1 assist) The former West Kelowna Warriors forward had a strong afternoon in the loss. Was very dangerous through out the game, quick on his feet, can move the puck well, a good skater, has a quick release. Gave Vernon trouble all afternoon.

Ben Brar (1 goal) The former Penticton Vees forward I thought played well in the loss. Has some size, was going to the net, making life difficult for Vipers goaltender Ty Taylor. Played well along the wall, was hard to knock off the puck.

Connor Russell Played well on the PG blueline. Saw a lot of minutes, was hard to play against.

Tavin Grant (42 saves) Was the difference in the hockey game. Without Grant this game would have been over after the opening frame. The Vipers with several great chances in the 1st couldn't solve Grant. Grant made some big stops-kept his team in the contest, giving his club a chance to win. Covers a lot of the net, dosnt give up many if any second opportunities, plays his position well.

Game Thought's: (Prince George)

The Spruce Kings played well at times through out the game but not for very lengthy periods of time. I thought PG had a good start, carried a slight edge in play over Vernon early before having to defend against the Vipers who were took over the edge in play. Prince George come on late in the 1st were lucky to be up a goal heading into the 2nd period. I thought the Spruce Kings played better defensively in the middle frame, kept the Snakes to the outside, limited their chances, still played a lot of time in their own end. But give PG credit, they took a 2-0 lead to the 3rd before jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Spruce Kings gave up an early goal just over a minute into the 3rd but quickly responded minutes later with two goals. With seven minutes remaining up by three goals, you have to hold onto this lead-game. The coaching staff-players cant be happy with the final seven minutes. The Spruce Kings were outplayed for most of the afternoon, were dominated in the 3rd were lucky to get a point in the loss. The Spruce Kings didn't get nearly as many opportunities as Vernon but scored-capitalized on their chances. I thought Prince George relied on their goaltender to bail them out for most of the day but played very well defensively. PG with a strong forecheck, kept the Snakes to the outside a lot, made the Vipers make quick decesions with the puck in the offensive zone. PG has a big team with lots of zize, needs to play more consistent with the lead. The Spruce Kings have just two wins in their last ten road games.

Vipers Stop Vees 3-1

This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:

Vipers stop Vees 3-1

by  Kevin Mitchell - Vernon Morning Star

Jan 29, 2017

It was Faith Night Friday at Kal Tire Place with several churches putting their hands together for the Vernon Vipers.

The congregation of 2,225 witnessed the Vipers’ most complete game of the B.C. Hockey League: a 3-1 win over the powerful Penticton Vees. Fans stood and gave the Snakes an adoring ovation at the final buzzer, most believing Vernon has the moxy for a long playoff run.

The Vees and Vipers evenly split their season series and are expected to meet in the Interior Division finals.

The Vipers came within 2:37 of pitching a shutout as Grant Cruikshank buried a wrister from the point past a screened Darion Hanson with 53 seconds left in Brett Stapley’s minor penalty for holding.

“It was a good game,” said first star Steven Jandric, who recorded his 20th and 21st goals of the year. “We played how we were supposed to do, hard on them. Last game, we were 3-0 up on them and they came back and tied it and that was a tough one. We let off the gas and here we stepped on the gas the whole time. (Head coach Ferner) Mark really emphasizes about playing a tougher game, just finishing our checks and winning all the stick battles and just putting in the extra effort to win the battles.”

Jandric, a second-year power winger out of Prince George, became the first Viper to reach the 20-goal plateau this season. He didn’t set any personal goals before Game 1.

‘I never really thought about it but it’s nice that it happened and it’s also nice playing with Stapes and (Lambert) Jimmy.”

Hanson, a Minnesota product who is 10-2 and drawing renewed interest from NHL scouts, made 31 saves. The Vipers kept the Vees to the perimeter for the most part, but Hanson made a big leg save off Owen Sillinger in the first 20 and stymied Turner Ripplinger on a wrap-around in the second session.

“Our guys put in a 60-minute effort out there, especially that third period.” said Hanson, who didn’t see Cruikshank’s shot go off the post. “It’s not easy to keep that team off the board. They got a late powerplay but that’s how it goes sometimes.

“Last game, we had a 3-0 lead and we blew it, so coming into this game, we learned from that, and we really beared down. Luckily, this time, we had the intermission to kind of gather ourselves and we went out and really put it all out there; I’m really proud of our group.”

Hanson, a Union University Dutchmen commit, relishes the thought of a Vernon-Penticton post-season dance, and likes the make-up of the Vipers.

“I think we have a really good group and that makes it a lot easier for everyone to be buying in. A lot of real good humans in that locker room, a lot of real mature kids, even the young guys, very mature. They all understand that team success brings personal success too. That’s really the basis for winning. Come playoff time, we’re ready to go.”

Jandric went hard to the net and converted a rebound after Lambert’s slapper from the right sidewall. Stapley drew the secondary assist with 56 seconds left in the first period.

Vernon went up 2-0 at 3:15 of the second stanza when Jandric tapped in a rebound after Cameron Trott’s point wrister was stopped by Robson. Stapley had the other helper.

Former Western Leaguer Austin Adamson produced his 10th snipe of the year late in the period with a shot along the ice after Luke Gingras’s shot bounced high in the air in the mid slot.

The Vipers improved to 24-15-4-4 with a smothering defence-first system, while the Interior Division-leading Vees dipped to 32-11-1-1, 10 points ahead of Vernon. Robson was stellar with 31 saves and is now 27-10.

Penticton captain Nic Jones, who has 92 career Junior A snipes in between one season with the NCAA Ohio State Buckeyes, gave props to the Vipers for being extremely tenacious on the puck.

“Obviously, it’s a tough loss,” said the Edmonton native. “It was basically a 3-0 game since we got that late goal at the end. They’re a good team; they work extremely hard and it’s always a challenge to win on the road. They played a good game.”

Jones realizes a Vees-Vipers playoff war is possible, but just because Penticton is hosting the Western Canada Cup won’t make the Vees complacent.

“We think they’re a great team and they’re second in the division for a reason and we could see them down the road, but right now we’re just worried about one game. We want to go right through the front door. We’re not worried about the Westerns, we’re about winning the BCHL championship, going to the Westerns and winning the RBC (in Couburg, Ont.).”

Penticton monster d-man Griffin Mendel, who joined Viper goalie Ty Taylor with Team West at the CJHL Prospects Game Wednesday night in Cornwall, said Vernon simply cashed in on their chances Friday night. He also favours a seven-game series come late March.

“Love playing Vernon,” said Mendel, of Kelowna. “Hopefully, we both get there; it’ll be a good series with two even teams. It just comes down to who comes to play that night.”

Mendel, a 6-foot-4, 217-pound University of Denver Pioneer commit being watched by Philly Flyer scout Jack McIlhargey and others Friday, wants a national ring.

“It always kind of feels cheap if you get the bye (to Royal Bank Cup) so we wanna earn our way to make it.”

There were a number of skirmishes all over the rink with things really heating up when Matt Gosiewski took Lambert into the sidewall near the Penticton bench, earning a boarding minor. Lambert was down for about 45 seconds. Jesse Lansdell tossed some heavy hits and took the Fortis Energy Player of the Game for Vernon.

Scratches for the Vipers were forwards Riley Brandt and Hunter Zandee. The Vees were without D Gabe Bast, D Greg Brydon, D James Miller and F Ryley Risling. Zandee suffered a serious knee injury when hit by the Vees’ Taylor Ward in the 3-3 double overtime tie Wednesday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Penticton - ranked 12th in the nation - visit the Trail Smoke Eaters tonight, while the Snakes entertain the Nanaimo Clippers.

Lucas Finner scored at 49 seconds of the first overtime as the Clippers trimmed the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 4-3 before 1,050 fans at the Shaw Centre.

Vernon 3 Nanaimo 0

I have had season tickets for the past 27 years and been following Junior hockey in Vernon for well over thirty years. Ive missed only three home games since 1998-99 season. For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Clippers game as Vernon defeated Nanaimo 3-0 in front of 1,765 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Darion Hanson
Nanaimo: Evan Debrouwer

1st Period: Two and a half minutes into the contest the Vipers dump the puck in, wich takes a funny bounce off the end wall, coming back out front through the crease-legs of Clippers starting goaltender Evan Debrouwer before Vernon rushes the crease on a goal mouth scramble. Debrouwer & the Shipmen were able to excape and cover the puck. Shortly after a slew of back to back to back penalties really slowed the game down with very little five on five play for most of the opening frame. The Vipers would get the games first powerplay. Steven Jandric tried jamming away the loose puck at the side of the goal, was unable to beat Evan Debrouwer down low who hugged the post. Ryan Brushett then walked in through the slot, looked to be in the clear ripped a backhand that just missed the far corner. Vernon with two quality chances couldn't capitalize as Nanaimo killed off the minor. The Clippers would get their first look with the powerplay just as their penalty expired. Marcus Joseph with a quick shot from the point, forced Darion Hanson into making a tough save. The Clippers with pressure only lasted thirty four seconds before taking a penalty of their own. Just before the halfway mark Jamie Collins with a good opportunity in front couldn't beat Darion Hanson. The Shipmen would get the first of three straight powerplays (one was a shortened two man advantage) couldn't capitalize with the man advantage. Nanaimo had some good looks, couldn't find the back of the net as Vernon killed off the minor. With just over three minutes remaining Darion Hanson made his biggest save off Jamie Collins alone in the slot, making a big pad save. The Vipers would get a late powerplay on the following play. Brett Stapley with two real solid chances couldn't solve Evan Debrouwer who made two big saves on the penalty kill, helping the Clippers kill off the minor. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. Both teams got off to a slow start, in a period that was filled with penalties. Not a lot of five on five play, saw specialty teams take over. Both teams couldn't take advantage with the powerplay. The Vipers didn't have their legs going, didn't have the same jump-intensity they showed-played with last night, were outworked-outplayed for most of the 1st. Vernon didn't generate-create much for chances were turning over the puck often. The Clippers carried the better of the play, also didn't create/generate many opportunities, were quick moving the puck, played with a strong forecheck and were getting pucks to the net. I thought the Shipmen were the better of the two teams in a very dull-non exciting period. Shots were 12-12.

2nd Period: The Clippers come out with a ton of jump, stormed the Viper net early. Just over a minute into the middle frame Nanaimo with a strong forecheck would get a flurry of chances in and around the Vernon goal, had some quality chances were denied by Vipers starting goaltender Darion Hanson. With the Vipers hemmed in their own end, Nanaimo pressed for the games first goal. Shortly after Steven Jandric with a quality chance in close beat Clippers starting goaltender Evan Debrouwer but rang his shot off the post. The Shipmen carried the play early were aggressive with the puck-forecheck were outshooting the Snakes 7-1 just four minutes into the 2nd. Nanaimo was the better team in the first half, carried most of the play, had several good looks but couldn't solve Darion Hanson. Just before the midway mark Ryan Brushett rang a shot off the post as Vernon come close to opening the scoring. The Vipers would get back to back powerplays, didn't capitalize on either powerplay but seemed to gain a little spark-momentum after the second powerplay. The Vipers seemed to slowly get their legs going, started picking up their energy just a bit late in the second half. Nanaimo went atleast six minutes without a shot on goal, while Vernon was coming on. The Vipers had some good looks in and around the net, couldn't beat Evan Debrouwer who made some key saves in the second half. It was 0-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Clippers with a strong start, jumped on the Snakes early and often, were all over Vernon in the first half. Darion Hanson had to be sharp, kept his team in the game. The Vipers seemed to get going late in the second half, come on in the final five-six minutes, played a little better, were finally able to generate/create some opportunities. For a second straight period Nanaimo with a strong forecheck, forced the Vipers into several turnovers. Nanaimo outshot Vernon 13-10.

3rd Period: Just two minutes into the final frame Austin Adamson with a dump in play, won the race for the puck was able to get off a quick backhand at the side of the goal with traffic in front, gave Vernon a 1-0 lead at 2:06 Adamson's goal was unassisted. This was just strictly hard work. Adamson did all the work, to open the scoring. The Vipers playing with a 1-0 lead were having all kinds of trouble getting out of their own end, turned over the puck several times, but Nanaimo was unable to capitalize were having troubles getting any real quality chances. Darion Hanson had to be sharp, played very well in the 3rd. The Snakes would get a little insurance after Jagger Williamson's shot went in and off Niko Karamanis in front giving Vernon a 2-0 lead at 7:12 Williamson & Connor Clouston with the helpers. The Clippers didn't quit, as Nanaimo kept pressing but again didn't generate any real grade A chances. A lot more pucks to the net, then anything that were smothered up-stopped by Darion Hanson. The Vipers playing a little better seemed to be playing with a little more energy, didn't see a lot of zone time. In the second half Ryan Brushett stole the puck on a Clipper turnover, lead the two on one rush waited for the Clipper d-man to make his move before setting up Austin Adamson who beat a sprawling Evan Debrouwer giving Vernon a 3-0 lead at 14:23 Brushett with the assist. This was a big goal after the Clippers were pressing to try and get within a goal. Shortly after Sean Buchanan hit Jesse Lansdell from behind behind the Nanaimo goal, with Lansdell lying on the ice, Shane Kelly raced over jumped Buchanan dropping the gloves in a spirited fight. The two went toe to toe before being tossed from the hockey game. Lansdell seemed to be ok, stayed in the game. Kelly was given a gross misconduct for the play-fight while the rink attendants had to repair the end boards after a chunk of the boards-advertisement was broken. With a small delay both teams finished the game four on four. Off the following faceoff Ben Solin with a rocket of a shot from the high slot forced Darion Hanson into making a huge pad save, keeping this a three goal game. Mike Vandekamp would eventually call a timeout getting Evan Debrouwer to the bench for the extra attacker with just over three minutes remaining. The Shipmen with good pressure, had some good looks, couldn't solve Darion Hanson. Jagger Williamson took a shot at the open cage couldn't beat David Eccles who made a big defensive play, to keep the puck out. The Clippers with a ton of pressure late couldn't catch a break. With just twenty seconds remaining, Marcus Joseph's point shot was redirected beat Darion Hanson but not the post as the Clippers come just inches away from getting on the board inside the final minute. Vernon would hang on for the 3-0 victory. Nanaimo carried the better of the play, once again were forcing the Vipers into turning over the puck, making poor passes-puck decisions, couldn't generate a lot of grade A chances. The Clippers were getting pucks to the net, but didn't get a lot of quality opportunities. The Vipers were lucky to capitalize-bury their chances didn't see a lot of zone time. Darion Hanson was the difference for the Vipers. I thought Nanaimo was the better of the two teams. Nanaimo outshot Vernon 14-8.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Austin Adamson (2 goals) Scored the game winner on a hard working play-shift. Adamson really stepped up his play late in the 2nd period and continued to play well in the 3rd. Two big goals in the 3rd helped Vernon hold onto the win. Adamson worked-battled hard in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Niko Karamanis (1 goal) Scored the Vipers second goal on a play where it looked like the puck went in and off Karamanis in front. Karamanis was one of if not the hardest working Viper tonight. Other then Adamson was really skating hard in all three periods, played with a lot of jump/energy, was showing a lot of hustle.

Jesse Lansdell was another forward who I thought played well, had some jump in his game. Made some big defensive plays on a few occasions.

Darion Hanson (39 saves-Shutout) Picked up his second shutout of the season, was the difference, keeping Vernon in the game at times, bailed out his team on several occasions. Other then a few saves I don't think was really forced to make that huge save, instead was out to challenge, was smothering pucks-making the key saves when called apon. Looked calm-played with a lot of confidence, was seeing the puck, wich helped, was very good in the win.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

After a big emotional win over the Division leading Penticton Vees last night, the Vipers looked like a different team this evening. Vernon didn't have the same amount of jump/energy they showed/played with Friday. I thought the Vipers looked a step behind the Clippers, didn't have their legs going, were slow-tired looking through out the night. Struggled at both ends of the rink, I didn't think had many great quality chances, were turning over pucks all night. Had troubles in their own end, were hemmed in their own end often, made some poor decisions with and without the puck, looked sloppy at times, made some poor passes. I thought the Vipers didn't get enough zone time, were having troubles breaking through the neutral zone. I thought the Snakes picked up their game, got going towards the final five-six minutes of the second half of the 2nd period, played-looked a little better. I also thought they had some good shifts in the 3rd, obviously they did all the scoring in the final frame, but overall I thought the Clippers were the better team. I don't agree with the call on Shane Kelly. This play-fight does not reward a gross misconduct. Kelly was sticking up for his team mate who had his head driven through the end boards. The Vipers need to re-group, get a good night's rest before having to play Prince George tomorrow afternoon. Vernon needs to step up their play, play with more energy/jump and make better decisions with and without the puck. The Vipers were lucky to come away with the win. The Snakes are now unbeaten in three games. The Vipers win the season series with Nanaimo going 3-0 vs the Clippers this season. The Vipers were wearing their new special Canadian Mental Health Jerseys just for tonight only. Green white and gold (CMHA colours) that were going to be auctioned off after tonight's game. Former Vernon Lakers stick boy and Vernon Vipers trainer Trevor McEachnie was in attendance.

Top Player's: (Nanaimo)

Marcus Joseph I thought was one of if not the Shipmen's better defenceman. Not the biggest kid, but can skate-move the puck, gets pucks to the net, was generating a lot of offence from the blueline. Really sees-reads the ice well.

Jamie Collins Was one of if not Nanaimo's better forwards. Not one of the bigger skaters but goes to the net, works hard, created/generated a few opportunities tonight in the loss. I thought played very well.

Evan Debrouwer (27 saves) A bigger kid, covers a lot of the net. I don't think was tested often but made some key saves at times in the game. Was good down low, covers a lot of the bottom half of the net, didn't give up a lot of rebounds.

Game Thought's: (Nanaimo)

I thought the Clippers were the better of the two teams. Nanaimo carried a lot of the play, had more time with the puck, had lots of zone time, didn't get a lot of grade A chances. I thought the Clippers did a good job at getting pucks to the net, but didn't generate/create a lot of great opportunities. The Shipmen move the puck in a hurry, are hard on the forecheck, really forced Vernon into making a ton of mistakes-turnovers with and without the puck. The Shipmen work hard, won a lot of the races, were stronger on the puck and better at both ends of the rink. The Clippers couldn't capitalize-bury their chances, didn't catch a lot of breaks-bounces in and around the Viper goal. After watching last night's exciting Vipers win over Penticton, tonight's game was much different. Not a lot of action-flow to the game, lots of penalties-whistles, slowed the game down. No real emotion between the two teams, made for a pretty dull hockey game. It was one of those games, where whoever opened the scoring, may come away with the win. Nanaimo should have won tonight, controlled a lot of the play. Nanaimo has just three wins in their last sixteen road games.
